Cannot open encrypted on Time Machine disk image

I have an encrypted file protected by password in my Macbook Pro.  The folder name is "Enc.dmg" and is kept in the main Applications folder. If I remove the Time Machine backup before a dmg file, it seems theoretically to save.  But when I later enter Time Machine go to Applications and click on the Enc.dmg file, it opens; It is not mount the disk image and invite me to enter the password.  Instead, a non-functional information is displayed.  The box contains unnecessary information. He tells me it's a dmg file.

If ever, my computer crashes or is lost or stolen and I can't access my file encrypted on Time Machine, I'll be in big trouble.  Is it possible to actually make a dmg properly function in mode Time Machine?

You restore the file before trying to open it? It should not open in Time Machine.

  • Cannot switch between multiple Time Machine backups

I generally save my 2010 Macbook Pro to a 2012 Time Capsule, which is attached to my router via an ethernet cable (most recent) wireless. On a trip, I make the additional backups on an external hard drive. However, when I go home and try to return to the TC, my internal HD is now on the time Machine "Exclude" list and cannot be removed (greyed out). When I try to save, I get a message saying "no disks are available to back up."

What has happened a few times, and the only solution I could find was to delete my original Time Machine backup and put a new (which took forever).

Any ideas why my HD internal is added to the exclusion list after using Time Machine with an external hard drive?

Time Machine backups on a network drive or a disc attached locally stored in different formats. Switching between them was not in the overall theme of the design of this service of OS X.

I suggest that you set up Time Machine to use multiple disks.

FWIW, in my case, I backup destinations, Time Machine on a Time Capsule and an external hard drive of 2 bolt of lightning. When both are available, the time goes 'take turns' Machine backup on each drive.

If a disk is not available, it backs up to that which is, and which ignores the backup of the other. When the two are connected again, backups continue on both.

  • If I use FileVault, do I need to encrypt backups Time Machine?

My main hard drive on my MBP is encrypted with Filevault - that said, is it still necessary to encrypt backups in Time Machine preferences?  The option of my Time Capsule is actually grayed, so I guess I have to format the Time Capsule disk... but that is still necessary?  I guess I'm good with just FileVault enabled, on the Mac?

No, there is no need to encrypt TM back ups when your Mac has active FileVault.

Encryption of TM is separate and is kind of FileVaulting like the back of TM ups. If you feel you want your back ups as safe from prying eyes, as you did with your MBP, you can activate the encryption. I do the network back ups to a Mini Mac OS X Server running and have never encrypted them. I can, I elected just don't do it.

  • adding the 2nd Time Machine disk backup capability

I have a Mac pro OS X 10.11.5 with two discs devoted to the backup. When I wanted the first filled to the top, then add the second to continue archiving backup files.

I don't want to lose my older archived data in backups on disk 1.

What happens when I add a second drive to add capacity to the Time Machine backups?  Once the first drive is hard full TM then will use the second drive until it is full?

When you add the second drive, I get a warning that the TM will take turns using the disc 1 and disc 2. But 1 disk is full. TM will not delete old information on Drive 1 to make room? If Yes is not good because I want to keep the old data. I just want to keep incremental backups to Drive 2.

    Please specify the feature.

Yes, TM will continue to save on disk 1 and delete older backups and take turns with disk 2. If you want to keep 1 as it is by car, then you must remove it from the list of backup. Start a new backup on disk 2, and continue. In both cases, the disc 2 will make a new full backup of your computer.

  • Time machine disk disappeared launching parallels

    Hello
When I run the word on Windows 10 on 11 Parallels on my iMac, my Time Machine drive icon disappeared from my office. The time machine software stops the backup of my HD since the drive has disappeared.
It reappears when parallels is closed and the smoking cessation.
    Why?
What should I do in order to make parallel and time machine living peacefully side by side. Thanks and greetings

Personally never used Parallels and there is not much for support information on their Web site.  Based on my experience with VirtualBox, surface-mounted disk in the virtual machine, it takes control of the host OS.  This is perhaps what is happening.

This seems to be a relevant article in the Parallels knowledge base.

  • Network drive cannot be selected in Time Machine, but works in the Finder

    Hello

I have a NetGear wndr4500v2 router in which I now have my 1 TB HD plugged (HFS formatted). I've always used this drive for backups TM via the USB in my MBP, but decided it would be good to have all it wireless. Unfortunately I was not able to select the player in Time Machine.

-I cannot connect / to connect/change player/server and all of its files in the Finder, no problem

-Already played a bit with SMB and AFP sharing settings

-Tried with router via an ethernet cable connection

-NetGear Vaucluse to Time Machine support

    -Of course restarted devices

-I run El Capitan on a 13 "MacBook Pro 2012

All this with no result. I have not yet tried to do the old-fashioned way (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VwHGSHSnDk) as I was hoping for an easy solution and beside that, I'm not sure that this guide still works on OSX 11 all thoughts about it, guys? Let me know!

A device third-party network attached storage (NAS) or a router is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know that's not what you want to hear. I know that the manufacturer declares that the unit will work with Time Machine.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification. They all use the application of Netatalk incomplete, obsolete Apple Filing Protocol.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

Otherwise, use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to save, although none of them are nowhere near as effective or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

If you are determined to continue to use the device with Time Machine, your only remedy for any resulting problem is the manufacturer (who will blame Apple, neither you nor anyone else but herself.)

  • New MacBook Pro - photos cannot 'fix' library of Time Machine

Hello.  I recently got a new Macbook Pro.  I have "" everything from my old macbook pro using my TimeMachine upward.  Everything seems to go well except...  When I opened the Photos I get a message that the library should be "repaired".   When the repair process is 95%, I get another message indicating that the library is not repairable.     I always have backups Time Machine and tried to restore the photo library, but it does the same thing.  I don't have access to the old computer.

Any suggestions are appreciated.  I have pictures in iCloud, but download here sounds a lot of time.

    Thank you!

I have pictures in iCloud, but download here sounds a lot of time.

So, you might start with an empty photo library and let the pictures to download from iCloud. If you restore the library of Photos of Time Machine, Photos will be anyway download the complete library restored to iCloud and sync and compare. It will take the same time to synchronize again restored library.  The difference is, that the restored library will have all your projects - books, calendars, cards and all thumbnails of faces. If you download the library from iCloud, projects will be missing and thumbnails of faces. You will only have keywords searchable faces.

I always have backups Time Machine and tried to restore the photo library, but it does the same thing.

Where did you have restored the library? For an external drive or the pictures folder?

  • Cannot access my backup time machine on external hard drive once I changed my hard drive

Since I changed my hard drive on my mac pro book I can't access the time machine back up on my external hard drive. All the shows when I connect the hard drive, but I can't access it.  Any ideas?

I use El Captain MacBook Pro (15-inch mid-2012),

By changing the hard drive, you have also lost all preferences, including those for Time Machine. You can have success by cloning back from the old system to the new drive to get back them.

Or, simply erase the backup drive, reconfigure Time Machine preferences, then let time Machine do a new backup.

  • Cannot open encrypted after you remove files from the account which them encrypted.

I have some encrypted files a few days back... Then I had to remove this user account and now I do not remember that I have...-encrypted files now my new account (type administrator) I can't access those files. So, how can I open these files? They are very important. I use widows xp service pack 3.

I also tried to start windows Safe Mode, then changing the security options to allow me full control... but it still does not work
I know that the function itself has been developed for the safety of the files, but there must be a means of decryption by another administrator account.

Please tell me a way out as soon as possible.
    Thank you!

I'm assuming that you encrypted these files using the available XP Pro Encrypting File System (EFS).  Unless you've backed up your encryption certificates or have a backup of the image-style where you can completely restore your system to exactly how it was, you will have great difficulty to recover these files.  Required for the use of EFS is the short article.  Particularly in the paragraph titled "why you should back up your certificates.

"Best practices for EFS file system.

It is possible that the remains of your old user still exist on your disk.  If so, there a program designed specifically for people in your situation that may be able to retrieve the certificate.  No guarantee, however, but it might be worth trying:

  • Cannot open encrypted files moved from PC to Mac

I am running Acrobat Pro XI on a PC (Windows version 8.1) and have Acrobat Pro XI (Mac version) on a new MacBook Pro retina 13 ".  I am able to "transfer" files from the PC to the Mac via Dropbox.  However, only unencrypted files will be open on the Mac.

As soon as I use a password to encrypt the file on the PC (i.e., password to open the .pdf file), then trf via Dropbox for Mac, it (CMA) returns the message...  "The password is incorrect.  Please make sure that the caps lock is not accidentally suite and try again. » ...  I tried several times, verification of the Caps Lock and password etc.  The password is correct and works fine on the PC.  I even tried to re - install Acrobat on the Mac, but it made no difference.

    Help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Bernd.  I used a special character (dash) so I am about to change that and see if that makes a difference

There is no image "attached".  You cannot display a picture if you have access to the forum by e-mail.  Everything will disappear from any file attached to an e-mail in cyberspace, without anyone ever seeing.

To embed an image in a post, use the camera icon in the editor of response in the forum web interface using your web browser.

  • Cannot open encrypted files

I had a resettled victory and there are files and folders that are encrypted and now they do not open. I tried to change their owner and open, but to no avail... He says that you don't have the permission of S-1-5-21 etc... Please give me a solution

If you their encrypted by using bitlocker and re-installed windows you will have n0t be able to open them.  Only the original "owner" can UN-encrypt-the.  It's yet another reason not to use bitlocker.
