  Try Firefox Safe mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most of the modules.

It gives an error message "there was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.   We are experiencing this same problem on my place of work.

  The issue occurs intermittently, and whenever it happens, it is determined that the corrupt PDF attachment was sent from an iPhone (seems to be linked to iOS 9.3.x)
