Cannot read data CDs, shows white

Kept backup copies of tax returns on a CD since 2001.  For the past 11 years, I have copies and pasted the file saved from tax on the same CD.  The PC that I use is the same burner DVD I used to open and save returns the last 4 years.  I use the same tax software... so the tax return on the all saved files have the same extension.

I inserted the CD in my PC this year and it shows blank disc?  This can't be, I had it opened last year, has seen all the prior tax return files saved and writes the file data of 2010.

But now the CD appears as blank...

My PC sees the burner DVD that is not a factor. I uninstall the drive Manager usining device and rebooted the PC is re-new the drive in windows... that made no difference, CD Rom can not yet be read.

Someone has any suggestions how I might have access to these data?

EASEUS has some data recovery tools, some free, that you can try.  I've never had need of them, but I have used both products Easeus and can say that these guys have really got their act together.

Be aware that CDs and DVDs last forever.  I read that the average expected lifespan is 5 years even though I have a little more than 10 years that work very well.  I think that hard drives are more reliable than CDs and DVDs, but they wear out too and flash drives are going kaput after so many read/write cycles.  They do not survive through both washing machines either!  :-)  Personally, I save my tax returns on my hard drive and back up an external hard drive.

Good luck.

Hi Banhien, the cause is known. I have seen other comments on the HP forum and concluded that the reader needs more power than is available through the USB connector of. I added a hub that can provide power to its connectors USB, HP X 2, by car and the problem has been resolved! It was noted that the mini USB is also more powerful and with the type of adapter USB USB C it might also work, but I did not test this, because I do not have such an adapter. It's odd that such a mini can provide more power. It is surprising that the HP Pavilion X 2 does not have a powerful USB. But the problem is solved. Thanks for your response! Best regards, wiely

    Hello Joe

I saw in some your previous assignments that you use external DVD drive too.

I use my Tecra with Replicator port and a multi LG external DL disk attached to the port replicator (due to the fast data transfer firewire connection). Everything works fine and I wonder how you can have all of these problems.

If your device is set up correctly, including all the original drivers, tools and utilities that you can find on Toshiba download page should not have any problem. I hope that you have installed the unit without port replicator and you don t forget Mobile extension tool. As much as I know there is no driver for Replicator port and all the signals are loop just to the ports of the replicaror port.

  • D:\ is not a valid win32 application. CD/DVD drive reads music CDs, but no installation CD

I recently reinstalled my Thinkpad T42.  After installing XP and install all updates, I tried to install Microsoft Office Pro 2003 by CD-ROM.  My CD/DVD is not able to read the CD and gives the following error D:\ is not a valid win32 application.  The drive can read music CDs and works correctly.  The Office 2003 installation cd is clean and works on other computers.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

    Yes, you are right logically.

Now I see two sceenarios for the solution to analyze your clues:

Number 1: Technically on the media (e.g - CD/DVD) in what place (at level nm) is the setup.exe, which might be a little corrupted or overburn.

To read the corrupted or overburn data recording Media(e.g-CD/DVD), lens optical drive must be precisely align / optimized. But your workout goal isn't in this top performance more. So that it can read only where another player can read that.

Actually lose everything in a music or movie playback by laser beam data a bit do not count a lot (maybe a drop of a sound level of a few nanoseconds which is missed by our ear) but to read a file .exe must be exact to change a little vital file execution make the whole file unreadable garbage before System. But such laser weakened to run well on music & movies.

To resolve the installation of MS Office thet you just copy all the content of the disc to your HARD drive & then try to install. If the problem persists copy the .exe to install a USB key, the other car that can be read. Then replace the HARD disk by the corrupt.

Number 2: (Associated virus infection) Your system might be infected severely by code viral insertion of viruses. While any execution of .exe file is impossible on the system, CD/DVD and HARD disk USB storage etc & they won't take their appropriate icons. Basically, he attacks the windows installer component & ban the user to install/play no matter what .exe file that require the help of Win Setup. So in this case change media with a new will not solve the problem. Except for the removal of the virus or system shape. So, you can use free Malwarebytes to scan.

You can use eset online scanner , scan side by side with

Microsoft® Windows® malicious software removal tool.

On the last day of your Windows install 4.5 at the bottom of the link that might help too:

Windows install 4.5 for 32-bit Windows XP

Also will help restore registry associated with .exe.

Conclusion: I'm going to, I said that the title of the thread is not quite right, as you cannot read data from a particular MS Office installation media. But this is not the case with any medium of data disc or installation. At least until your DVD drive so were unable to read all files on the disc, then it might be a pure hardware problem. But as you can see all the files except the .exe files, then there is an uncertain probability of hardware problem.

Now, you do the analysis & tell me is happening with any media/.exe to install file. Who here has solved your problem

Ask for additional assistance if necessary.

  • CD DVD player: can not read data DVD discs that burned same machine

Laptop with Windows Vista cannot read data DVD discs that burned same machine.  The discs work on another computer.  My laptop will read CD disks, he did, and it will play DVD movies. What's wrong?

    Hello

You have disk problems as the CD/DVD is actually 4 discs in 1 case (CD &)
Burn DVDs and CDs and read DVDs). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 parts to no function
while others are doing so correctly.

Burning at low speed, or by using the master could help. A CD/DVD cleaner
    could help.

Brand of the CD or DVD drive can also be the problem. Low quality (cheap brands) are always
    issue.

CD/DVDs have a tolerance + - and your can read/write on the outside edge
tolerances of the disks. They may be delivered, but it is usually cheaper to replace
    the reader.

You can probably find more info here and maybe even the exact registry for your CD/DVD settings
drive from someone with the same model.

Use DevManView to locate the CD/DVD in the registry (be careful and do a prior Restore Point)
nothing change) - find the DevManView device and then make a right click on it free in RegEdit.

DevManView - free - an alternative to the standard Windows Device Manager, which displays all the
devices and their properties in flat table, instead of the tree viewer
