Catalog on moose, updated DNG on local and external hard drive. Why?

I am running OS 10.5, I installed Lightroom, connected my external hard drive and began importing older images I can get everything organized.  I created the catalog on the external hard drive with images.  Suddenly, I noticed my local filling in car and then found in the Directory/Users/username/Pictures a complete directory of 2005 and 2006 the DNGs being created by lightroom, why aren't these saved on my external hard drive?

When importing (and import with conversion to DNG) double check where will be stored in the dialog box import your files.

Click CHOOSE it... button to change the target location.

In the classroom (8.1 windows computers) import us images that .dng files on an external hard drive using Lightroom.

After the Lightroom, insert us the memory card containing photos and attach an external hard drive. (formatted to ntfs)

We create a new catalog on the external hard drive and then create a folder as the destination for the images on the external drive as well.

After passing to the newly formed catalog in Lightroom, we import the photos from the memory card to the external hard drive.

Photos are present in the folder 'import' on the external hard drive after the end of the import, so checking with windows Explorer.

After the closure of LR and disconnect the external hard drive of the computer, it appears that the newly created files and imported files have disappeared.

We tested with an external hard drive in exfat. The same problem.

There is no problem when you copy directly in Explorer windows of memory card files to the external drive.

If you said that the photo files are on the external hard drive when you checked using Windows Explorer during the class? Is this correct? YES
Then you go home and the files are not on the external hard drive? YES

Well, it is a mystery, but there is no way that Lightroom can be the culprit.

Is it the same for the catalog file, in class, he was present on the hard disk according to the Windows Explorer, and when you get home, is no longer on the drive? YES

Same conclusions, it is not Lightroom.

  • Install lr on and external hard drive or on the local drive?

    Hi again.

Someone at - it thoughts on installing the LR2 program on an external hard drive to store all the pictures and projects about it too so.  If you do this you just plug the external hard drive into any pc or laptop and have your program and photos with you, even when you're traveling?  If I had to do this where would be the best place to put a back up of all my work to?  the local drive or dvd?   Ive not heard of people doing this, so I wonder if this isn't a good way to do.  Most often, I hear of just using the external dirve for one rear device.

    Thanks for any ideas

    Randy

Yes, in the application of the LR of the internal (boot-generally that it is starting, which is) is the way to go. There is little difference in safety if your images and your catalogs are on an internal or external: you must have a backup of the image and the .lrcat files. It is much easier on the hard drives on removable media.

  • Potential new user - several work stations and external hard drive

    Hello

I am considering the purchase of Lightroom, but wanted to run my script by the group to see if it works for me.

I have a desktop at home and at work, in addition to a laptop that I use when the place. The laptop is only used to unload the memory cards and do organize basic, not image processing.

At home, I have a database of image (XnView) that I use to organize my files, and then go to the bridge to convert my RAW TIF files. When I did work on my images, I use Beyond Compare to synchronize my internal image with an external drive. Outside we're going with me both as a backup, but that allows me to do more editing on my schedule for dinner. Any changes to the work is then synchronized to the internal drive to the House.

At home, the internal drive is designated as H (I use Windows) while the outside is the G drive. At work, when I plug the external hard drive, I put to come as the H drive. In this way, the files of database for XnView, residing on both internal and external, discs are loaded and XnView is none the wiser. OK, so that was a long introduction to my questions...

First of all, if I use Lightroom, can I use it on multiple computers as long as I use it never simultaneously on more than one?

Second, if I save the catalog on the internal H drive home, and then synchronize on the external drive, Lightroom to work just start and play these files of database unconscious because it is now an external hard drive?

Third, Lightroom has a built-in synchronization feature to do this, or I would continue using Beyond Compare to synchronize the two disks until I run Lightroom?

    Thank you!

Just to add. I use LR on two machines (sometimes three), there is no problem with the license, there is no activation and LR is designed for the Pro who obviously needs to be mobile. The images in the catalogue are on an external drive. These are also saved on my studio machine. The catalogue is also on the disk external and also duplicated on both computers. and saved on separate hard drives.

I work from the catalog on disk external when working on the top of the Tower in the studio, or as appropriate on machines borrowed in the field. Some would say that a catalog runs slower on an external drive. While the construction of previews, recording of the xmp data (or in my case direct to DNG) and import are a little slower with the help of an external drive, there is not slowing the work of real treatment.

It means that I have a general catalogue of all my images which is always up to date. It works very well without any problems.

  • Implementation of new iMac in late 2006 iMac and external hard drive

I have a late 2006 iMac 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo with 2.5 GB which I Lion 10.7.5.  I don't think I can improve operating systems, or more if they are not compatible.  I have an external hard drive that stores my photos, music etc I just ran out of space on iMac.  I decided to upgrade to the new iMac.  I thought that I would be able to plug in my external hard drive which has also my Time Machine backup and all the news would move to the new iMac.  However, the external hard drive is Firewire 800.  I connect it to the old iMac with adapter on the Firewire 400 port.  The new iMac has USB3.

    1. How can I connect external drive to the new iMac?  You can get a Firewire 800 cable USB3 (online research I don't think)

2 read online it seems to say that you need to update your software on your old iMac to match the new iMac otherwise the time Machine can not read information correctly.  It is not possible on the old iMac, what should I do?

I'm looking at my beautiful new iMac and the have not yet enabled.

The cable would probably be Thunderbolt to FireWire, check the available adapters

to see what should be the part. You would not upgraded an outdated old

Mac for a last OS X when he cannot go. Use the Migration Wizard or

migrate after installation. Some of these older applications or documents created

can be updated easily; Some may require conversion. Depending on your files.

The manual method is sometimes preferred. A new computer may balk

a lot of stuff which is reduced to an antique.

  • Since the update of Vista on my external hard drive problems

I have a problem with my external hard drive. A week ago I reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium on my PC. Everything worked very well, my external hard drive, too. But after installing all the new updates and SP2 my external hard drive has problems. If I copy something from her, or just listen to the music is recorded on it, so overall if I work with her, after 1 to 3 minutes it stops working. I have to sign in to get access to it again. But before installing SP2 updates after SP2 everything worked out very well. So I think that there is a problem with SP2 or the following updates. My Pc is a Dell Dimension 9200 and the external hard drive is a Verbatim 1 TB external hard drive and USB 2.0

I tried to bbot with Ubuntu and delete the Autorun.inf. Now everything works fine again.

  • E3000 and external hard drive (USB and Ethernet

I learned my first lesson the hard way.  'Assume' that you buy a new router that it will work with other new technology equipment.  Cisco needs to print somewhere in the product descriptions, their record of router there are size limits on external hard drives.  I got burned after buying a 3 to WD USB 3.0 hard drive that I can't use it on my current E3000 or their last E4200.  At least support knew this answer fast enough.  My bad for not taking the time to reflect, I search this site to find the list of external USB drives that will work with the E3000.

All I wanted to do was store multimedia files on a shared network drive.  I'm cheating the system now and using a shared drive on the main PC.  The whole point of my project is not not to have the main PC running to share media.

Before this old router of 60 day of scrap, has anyone had experiences on the use of WDs My Life 2 to external HD connection ETHERNET?

Someone actually one of these drives installed on an E3000 using win xp pro?  I search high and low here, but couldn't find a list of acceptable external Ethernet disks or the size limitations.

Burned once, lesson learned, don't get burned again.

    Thank you

If your external drive supports Ethernet, then you will be able to use it with your router.

Wired the external drive to your router using an Ethernet cable, then connect the router configuration page and click on the status tab and below click on the "Local area network" sub-tab and click on "DHCP Client" in the table of client DHCP list you will find the IP address for the external drive. Using this IP address, you can map the drive on your computer.

To map the drive on your computer, click on start - RUN - type "\\External address IP Drive", and click ok... When you are prompted for the type of user name and password for the user name and password click OK, now you should be able to see the folders that you created, right-click on it and select map network drive and click Finish.

  • How to export pictures from a sd card to lightroom and and external hard drive at the same time

    Hello

Is it possible that I can export my photos from my lightroom cameras sd card and an external hard drive at the same time so I have pictures original/master in both places

    Thanks in advance

    Tracey

    Hi Robert!

Looks like you want to make a backup during import. If this is the case, you can designate a different location for a second copy when importing.

    1. Check the mark a second copy of box in the management of the files Panel and choose your external drive in the menu drop-down
    2. Then you set regular destination of Lightroom in the Destination panel.

However, if you mean that you want in the foreground images in Lightroom, but have them physically located on an external drive, then all you need to do is choose this drive in the Destination panel. Lightroom Catalog can be on a different drive.

I find it useful, however, to use the automatic backup in file management Panel in case.

  • LR 4 and external hard drive

    Hello

I'm new to photoshop and ambient light.  I'll be spend all the photos of my Masters of opening, then using a 2 TB external drive to store my photos.  I have a mac i a House and operate a macbook air on the road.  I should create a catalog on the external hard drive or should I put a catalog on each computer and then sync them back?

    Thank you

    Joe

Joe, I would recoomend that you keep a catalog and have it on the external hard drive. Suggest you check "Store Presets with catalog" in the preferences > Presets as well, then they areavailable in both computers.

  • Windows 7 and external hard drives

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate edition.  I used to be able to connect an external hard drive and back up files.

Without warning, my computer won't recognize the external hard drive, as in don't even know not its here.  For a brief moment, I would get an error message, but now nothing.

By browsing the internet, I see this is a very common problem and nothing I have tried seems to work to correct the problem.  Site Microsoft Web is no help at all.

    Is there a solution?

    Hello

    1. Do you have an error message when you connect the external hard drive to the computer?
    2. Have you tried to plug the hard drive into another USB port or another computer?
    3. Is the computer recognizing other USB devices to connect to the computer?
    4. Did you recent hardware or changes to the software to the computer before the show?

I suggest you try the following steps if the hard drive works fine with one computer to another, and none of the USB devices are not getting recognized by the computer. You could deal with this problem for several reasons such as external hard drive defective, obsolete or damaged USB drivers does not assign a drive letter for your key USB etc.

You can refer to the suggestion of Shekhar S in the following link and check if it helps.

  • It seems my time machine and external hard drive are wiped clean this morning I started my computer. Is there a way I can know for sure if anything is salvageable?

I started my iMac this morning find a message that I didn't stop my Seagate external hard drive properly. I always just shut down my computer, I do not close the hard drive first. Now the computer says disc is not readable by this computer. Looks like it's a goner but maybe not, I don't know. I can't tell if it's the same thing to my Lacie Time Machine. There are no backups on it. How will I know what to do? Nothing is salvageable?

Try to run a disk utility to repair your disk of TM. It seems that there are 757 GB of backup data it me.

  • How can I prevent Windows Update to write data to my external HARD drive

I have Windows XP running on a controller NI PXI-8106. On this same controller, I have two mapped drives.
1 C drive where Windows is installed
2-external SATA drive mounted in RAID0 used to save sensitive data in our application.

We discovered that Windows update has written files to disk external DRIVE instead of the local drive as we would expected. What could I do to prevent this. It is very important for us, given that the RAID0 data should not be upset by any means. We cannot update Windows to write outside of the C: drive.

I look on various forums and it seems that I'm not the only one in this situation where Windows Update writes data to an external HARD drive, but I have not seen anywhere a solution to avoid this, in addition to unmaping the drive.

During the installation of updates, Windows Update downloads the installers (only) for updates to the drive with free space available. You can either disconnect the external drive when you need and/or free up space on, for example, your boot drive.
