Centralization of data - MacBook Air, iPhone 3, PC and laptop

I have a MacBook Air (250 GB), PC (500 GB + 2 to), portable and 3 iPhones to deal with. My music, movies and family photos/videos are all spread on all devices.  I like my MacBook, but it was a gift from my wife and she got just the 250 GB model. Trying to consolidate and backup so I don't lose anything, especially the family photos/videos.  I thought to do what follows, but don't really know too much about all this. Don't really understand the difference between a backup of file straight and a Time Machine backup. Very open to suggestions, but I don't want any paid Cloud (DropBox, disk, etc.) because of the long-term costs of storing large amounts of data.  I probably ~ 1 TB of data (and growing).  I don't plan on getting to 2 TB in the next 2 years.  The terminology can be switched off, I'm not an expert, so apologies in advance.

1 stop the PC and laptops, making it the only computer MacBook that we will use.  The only reason why I use the laptop and PC now is that SOME media and docs are on them.

2. move all the media on all computers to a drive QNAP TS-231 with 2 x 2 TB NAS and use RAID 1 to keep all backed up in case of a disk failure.  Finally I should probably spend 2 x 4 tb, but for now I don't have that much space I don't think.

3. move all non-media from the PC and laptop to the MacBook (I guess it's less than 10 GB of documents) and backup with Time Machine on the NAS.  Is it better to segment ~ 200 GB on the NAS drives specifically for Time Machine?

4. take the 2 TB drive access the computer and buy a cheap kit to an external drive.  Wipe once that everything is on the NAS.  A few times a year (perhaps monthly), copy the NAS drive to the external drive and keep this disc in our safe, so all my stuff is not sitting inside a box.

Are there holes in this plan? Do you have any suggestions?  I'd appreciate very much any help that you could give me.

Thank you
JPP

I don't have the expertise to comment on most of your plan, but one thing you may want to consider is point 4. Many so-called fireproof safes are not rated for computer media (or have a very limited side) or for the (flood) water damage.

  • MacBook Air keeps stopping itself and gives a report of Panic CPU. Repair warranty or fixable?

My MacBook Air keeps stopping itself, when he is asleep, or even using active? Some big long panic report arrives and I have no idea what all this means, what's wrong with it? She did this 4 or 5 times a week for 2 months now. I read here similar questions but do not understand the answers. It is almost always plugged in power, my 2 year warranty is updated until August 2016, 6 months ago, the motherboard has been replaced and told me that it looks like new. So what's happening? I need a repair under warranty again? I tried to copy and paste the report but I get a message saying that my question has invalid characters?

  • iCloud mail makes MacBook Air running very hot and very fast battery drain

Given that the upgrade to El Capitan and running the latest updates of my MacBook Air has worked very (almost too hot to the touch in some places) hot and the fan that has happened all the time. The battery is also in very quickly - I can sit and look at the percentage count.

If I disable my iCloud in Mail preferences the computer messaging service cools, the fan stops and the battery stabilizes. So it must be a problem with iCloud mail. Anyone who has ideas or fixes for this?

  • Mavericks will install on MacBook Air 2008

    Hi all

I bought a MacBook Air, which seems to me to be a 2008 model.

Its installed with Leopard 10.5 which seems to be old and things like iTunes and QuickTime are old and obsolete because Leopard is too old for me to install the latest version.

I found some USB drives bootable on eBay loaded with the Mavericks , but I noticed in the description that the supported devices are MacBook Air late 2008.

I don't know whether mine is end of 2008.

Surely, I can spend Leopard to unlock more features with the software up to date.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

 > about this Mac > system report > search for the model identifier in the presentation of the material.

Based on MacTracker and the tecniques of El Capitan, the ' MacBookAir2, 1 "MacBook Air (late 2008) model and later version can run software current of El Capitan - if there is enough disk space and memory available.  See the tech for the minimum requirements.

If you have 10.5, you buy OS X 10.6 Apple and upgrade to it and from there you can move towards more current OS X software.

  • Space mgmt on Macbook Air 13 "

I own a macbook air to 120 GB and save all the files, photos, videos and music on an external hard drive of 1 TB.  I'm surprised that I have only 7 GB of space on my mac.  What could be taken from so much space and how to fix it?

If you download and install OmniDiskSweeper, it will show you the files and folders that use the most space on your Mac.

The first step you need to do before you start any project to clean up disk space is a full backup of everything.

  • MacBook Air 13 inch screen keyboard brands

I just bought a macbook air for the College and as anyone who has already purchased an expensive product, I want to take good care of it, then it will last me a good amount of time (at least until I've finished law school). After some research on the web, it has come to my attention that the keyboard can scratch the screen when the laptop is a full backpack (quite a typical scenario in the lives of students). Should I put a cloth Microfiber between the keyboard and the screen when I close the laptop or should I invest in a screen protector or is my stupid just afraid with no. anchor in reality? Thank you in advance!

Do not use Palm or Cap covers on a MacBook Pro with Retina - Apple Support display here, is what Apple thinks about it actually, I guess that the cloth would increase the pressure and it can cause more damage, especially if it's the MacBook Air. And I also think that a cheap and quality product should not damaged so easily. Worry is not about this, your MacBook is self-sufficient

  • Is it worth to spend on the Apple Care for repair on my Macbook Air?

My macbook air rcently got a problem in marketing and it is bound to be replaced by a new logic board. I am a student and I find that the replacement cost is quite expensive for my budget. So I'm wondering if I buy an apple care, this will help covering the cost of this? I have run out of warranty because I bought my macbook air 2 years ago and it is a technical mistake completely since I have never had any accident with my macbook air.

Apple Care cannot be purchased so that your Mac is still under the one year warranty. It's too late to try to buy it now. http://www.Apple.com/support/products/Mac.html

You can go to the Microsoft website and check with their support team.

  • can I use Macbook air as a server

in my next computer I would install OS X Server 5 and I was wondering if a MacBook Air with 516 GB and 1.6 GHz processor would be appropriate for this.

Sari can run the server application, you will not be able to do the cache or Netboot services, but you can run DNS and file sharing/Time Machine backups (will be slow)

  • MacBook Air screen stuck on the circle with bar oblique?

I bought a MacBook Air on Friday last and just received in the mail today. I started up and followed all the prompts that he gave me. He then went to a screen that says "set up your Mac", and it was on this screen for hours then I looked at how to fix it. I found an article that said hold down the CTRL + SHIFT + option, press the power button, then release all buttons. I did this and then restarted my laptop. It made the normal chime, then shows the apple with a loading bar logo under it (as when you update software), then it goes to a screen with a circle that has a slash through it. The cursor does not appear and it does nothing. I don't know what I've done for her, but no matter who else has experienced this problem and found a resolution?

  • Firefox is my downfall of the MacBook Air?

Twice in just twenty-four hours, the screen of my MacBook Air is suddenly flashed and then again dark. So, I have to restart the computer to make it back.

Both times it happened I was just using Firefox, quietly reading online news stories.

Since then, I've switched back to Safari, and my computer seems to work normally. But I don't like the idea that it could close at any time.

Is probably the Firefox problem, or is it probably something wrong with my laptop?

I bought this MacBook Air in the spring of 2014, about two years ago.

  • 2012 the MacBook Air running hot and slow

After about 20 minutes using my 2012 MacBook Air gets very hot and the cooling fan starts to operate at full speed. At the same time, it slows down considerably. Is this a sign that the battery must be replaced (anyone know the approximate cost to do this?)? However, I have no problem to recharge the battery and it seems to work for a reasonable period between charges.

  • MacBook Air overheating all using Skype

When I use Skype, for some reason my macbook air gets very hot and the fan is non-stop. So I checked the activity monitor, and it seems that Skype uses 70% more than my CPU, which is not normal. I ran a virus and malware scan, everything is clean.

Here is a picture, any help would be appreciated.

What you are experiencing is not unusual and quite normal when using Skype.  It is an intensive application of resources very will therefore insist on the CPU/GPU of you MBA and create a lot of heat.  If you turn off your Skype, you will be witness to a dramatic fall in temperatures generated and the use of the central unit.
