• Update Server VC and 5.5 ESXi hosts to update 3 b (Build 3248547)

  I'm in vCenter Server 5.5 and 5.5 ESXi hosts.  Both are updated 3A, patched to version 201510001, which is the build 3116895.  I plan the upgrade of update 3 b (Build 3248547) and I'm a little confused on the question of SSLv3.

  I wonder if this point below ESXi55 U3b & VC 55U3b Known Issues applies to my config:

  ESXi does not automatically added to the inventory of the vCenter servers
  If you install an earlier version of vCenter Server and vSphere Update Manager for ESXi 5.5 updated 3B, then after the task of sanitation, ESXi does not automatically added to the VC inventory. Remediation process never gets done and ESXi State of connection in the VC inventory is presented as disconnected. Solution: When you restart ESXi after reorganization process is started, enable SSLv3 on ESXi (which is disabled by default). This will ensure that ESXi is added to the VC inventory automatically in minutes and sanitation as completed.

  If I'm reading things correctly, upgrade to vCenter Server to 3 b first and then upgrade the ESXi hosts, will avoid lost communication problems.  Can anyone confirm?

  It should be good if you update vCenter first.

  The problem is that pre - U3b vCenter 5.5 forces an SSLv3 connection when connecting to an ESXi host on port 443 (not the reverse). It does this, even if the host ESXi and vCenter SSL/TLS libraries actually support TLS 1.0 + since at least vSphere 4.0.

  So when you update one host to 5.5 U3b, the oldest vCenter again will try to force a connection SSLv3 that will fail, since SSLv3 has been disabled to the host. If you're updating vCenter, first of all, it will initiate a good TLS 1.0 + connection to more similar and updated hosts.

• VM in DMZ and LAN on the same ESXi Server VM

  It is advisable to run two virtual machines on a physical ESXi Server considering only

  a VM THAT is connected to the DMZ (demilitarized zone) and another VM is connected to the local network.

  For example, a virtual machine can be a gateway mail server in the DMZ and

  another VM can be located in LAN mail server.

  ESXi box has multiple network cards, so a single card could be connected to the DMZ and others to the local network.

  Is it dangerous from the point of view of security?

  It becomes really dangerous if you have a virtual machine that is connected to two networks at the same time if not online, there is no way known to cross borders. Other that that, you should be good to go

• ESXi Server and the DMZ security

  Hello world

  I currently have around 5 physical web servers sitting in a demilitarized zone. My plan is to convert all these web servers to virtual machines and host them on an ESXi server.

  I would like to host the ESXi Server actually in the demilitarized zone, all the VMs on the ESXi box would be public facing anyway. Does anyone know of a good reason not to do from a security point of view.

  I guess my main concern would be the area of ESXi being threaten. Of course, I would limit the traffic through the firewall rules.

  I would like to know your opinion on this and if someone has done this before?

• Budget ESXi Server installation?

  Hello!

  I know this question has been asked many times but not recently.  I'm looking to use material of desktop/workstation class for a budget ESXi server.  We are looking to run virtual machines that need 4 GB of ram each, and pretty decent CPU speed.  Ideally be able to run 3 simultaneously.

  Preconfigured servers are too expensive for what we want, considering that we can in place something ourselves for 2/3 of the price.

  What I'm really wondering is what CPU / mobo combination people recommend.  I know that people swear by Intel, but you get a lot more hearts of AMD these days that seems to be more important.  I also prefer to have incorporated net and especially SATA/raid who works with ESXi, but we can add - it if necessary.

  The official hardware support list practically only covers server-class hardware, but I know a lot of people run on class office equipment.  I looked on the Ultimate White Box guide and see a large number of options here - but most seem to be more than 1 year old.  So what people indicate?

  The Asus M4A78 seemed to be a popular series, but you can't buy it new is more - the series of M4A88 or M4A89 just as good?

  For example, the Phenom II X 6 seem to be pretty cheap ($200) and a variety of motherboards to $100.  Addition of 16 GB of ram and a few hard disks with a raid card network card and intel, and we should have a powerful system for well under $ 1,000.

• Hereditary ESXi Server - needs more storage. Where to start?

  I inherited a Dell PowerEdge R710, 2 x Intel Xeon 2.13GHz16 GB memory 2 x 1 TB SATA (7200 RPM) drives in RAID 1.

  The server is full with existing images, so I ordered 4 x 1 TB drives that just arrived. The server will be 3 TB RAID1 after I installed new readers

  Now my question is:

  How to reconfigure with new storage?

  If you do not already have a backup I place, it's time to think

  In your case, I just plug the new players and create 2 other sets RAID1 with 2 hard drives. You'd have to divide the size anyway because of the limit of records ~ 2 TB of ESX (i). Once you have created the new RAID1 sets, introduce them as 1 TB logical volumes to the OS (ESXi) and create VMFS data warehouses. That way you will end up with 3 stores of data on which you can place virtual machines, which IMO is a better approach than the construction of 1 large data store.

  If you create additional data warehouses there no need for migration. If you want to distribute the existing VM.

• Advice on the ESXi server conversion

  Hi all - I have a project, I work on the weekend and hoped comments before you start. I have a HP Xeon bicoeur recently purchased Windows Server 2003 running server is installed directly on the hardware (no virtualization yet). I want to convert the VMWare ESXi 4.0 running server and run the same operating system on this material. Here's the tricky part. I want to run ESXi on the same computer, Windows Server running on right now. I understand that VMWare converter exists for this, and it would be no problem I got a 2nd ESXi Server I could use as the destination for the new virtual machine running. But I have only 1 server. And the converter interface looks like it requires a host ESXi to connect to, when converting from one physical machine to a virtual machine. (please, correct me if I'm wrong)

  My plan to achieve this is:

  1. temporarily install ESXi on another computer

  2. use VMWare workstation to converter to convert the physical operating system to a virtual machine running on the ESXi host temp

  3. carefully test the new virtual machine!

  4. download files of the virtual machine to the host temp to converter with vSphere client workstation

  5. clean the hard disks on HP Server, install ESXi

  6. download VM files on HP Server with vSphere client

  7. I hope that new start VM brilliant without problem

  8 go back home and get some sleep!

  If anyone has any input on this point, known pitfalls to avoid, or how to go faster, please let me know!

  To make it a little easier (you save setting up ESXi twice) just to use VMware workstation and VMware converter (even just an eval version will do). Then...

  1. install VMware workstation and VMware converter on a decent existing computer (that has enough cpu/ram to support the windows server).

  2. use the windows VMware converter for P2V server in VMware workstation.

  3. test the virtual windows server 2003 works correctly

  4 install ESXi on HP Server and configure it.

  5 use the converter once more to shoot on the virtual machine in the front of the workstation in an ESXi virtual machine format hardware version 7.
