Cloning a virtual machine, is it possible?

Hello

Before this question, I tried to find the answer and to clear me on this issue, the fact is that it is is not clear to me yet.

I would like to know if it is technically possible to clone a virtual machine running and what are the disadvantages - if there is - with a running virtual machine. Perhaps it is preferable or necessary to stop the mv to be cloned.

I have 5 Vcenter. I don't know about cloning function it is differences between versions of vmware and have been improved accordingly.

I give thanks for your help.

Best regards

John

Yes you can clone the virtual machine running, you have vcenter to do.

If you clone with virtual machine off, ends faster than running.

  • Cloning of virtual machines with snapshots

Is it possible to take a virtual machine with snapshots, and then copy the individual vmdk files that make up a set of 5 shots manually and create a new virtual machine, so that all of the snapshots is all kept - and if it works what are the possible caviats / traps?  When you use just the cloning tool, it includes all snapshots.

    Hi TheVMinator,

As mentioned in the kb, it is not recommended. But if you stop your virtual machine, copy the complete folder and then save the new VMX, it should work.

The only problem that you have is a corruption of the sequence of disk. In this case, you can try to fix it or make another copy of the original VM. But you will not damage your original machine.

    Good luck.

  • Live cloning of virtual machines to ESXi ESXi

    Hello!

We received a request for a project of construction of a recovery after disaster for their ESXi host. They have a robust with local disks server and another identical that they want to use for this purpose.

So what they want is direct cloning VMs from Server A to Server B, so if the server goes down, virtual machines can be started from Server B and times of work.

They do not have a SAN/NAS solution that we could use to share images.

So does anyone know if it is possible to create a vcli script or a direct clone virtual machines from the hard drive of the server A to Server B's hard drive so that they would work from Server B.

    Best regards, city

    Salvation city,

    Welcome to the forums.

If your hosts are connected to a vCenter, you can script or plan an operation clone from one host to another. Without vCenter, it's more complicated... You can try the script of a VMware Converter operation or the export of the FVO. There is also the old backup / restore solution.

    Good luck.

  • Cloning a virtual machine running Live - destination of the is an exact match to the source at the beginning or end of the cloning process?

    Hello

I'm not a VMware Expert, so please forgive my noob question.

I was invited to migrate files from Windows Server 2003 to 2012 servers, and I intend to use cloning as a way of copying the VMDK with data from the file to the new server of 2012.

I created a script with vSphere PowerCli, which made a clone of the source and, once the cloning is complete, it stops and disables the Server service on the Windows of the source virtual machine operating system to avoid changes in the source of this point in time.

But I noticed, I have start by making a snapshot.

    Question:

Changes made to the source VM when creating the clone will then be synchronized at the end of the cloning process, so that the destination virtual machine will be an exact copy of the source, at the end of the cloning process?

Or destination VM will correspond only to the source of the VM at the time of the opening of the cloning process, and all the files that have been updated on the source VM when creating the clone will be lost on the destination?

Thank you for helping me to get a clear understanding of the present!

    Best regards

Changes made to the source VM when creating the clone will then be synchronized at the end of the cloning process, so that the destination virtual machine will be an exact copy of the source, at the end of the cloning process?

    Laughing out loud

Or destination VM will correspond only to the source of the VM at the time of the opening of the cloning process, and all the files that have been updated on the source VM when creating the clone will be lost on the destination?

Yes, the destination will be the data from the time you start to create the clone, because a snapshot will be created on the beginning of the process and the basic of this hat of the VM disk will be copied, all changes made on the source VM will be writing about the delta file and these data will not be copied.

  • Deletes a virtual machine of vCenter possible?

    Hi all.

We used to be a Horizon view manual pool composed of virtual machines
from vCenter server. In a single operation for removal of VM in view, we

wrong selected pool and confirmed the deletion. The

operation put merrily and when we realized the error, we

find vsphere client that all VMs funds (a lot of them

were running) in the manual pool view both were removed from the inventory

and from the disc in vCenter server.

This offends and confuses us. It is commonly accepted that it is
Cannot delete a virtual machine running of vCenter: vSphere client no
won't give you a possibility to do so, and doing so in a CROWD ends by default.
But the view above disaster might suggest otherwise.

    I have two questions:
    1. is it possible to delete a virtual machine running of vCenter?
    2. If so, how to prevent in vCenter?
    3. (somewhat off topic) is it possible to come up with any hacking or

This makes it impossible to remove vm disk Office while being

able to manipulate the view of the pool? We prefer to rather in vCenter.

    =====================================
The mistake that we made to remove all the Horizon view desktop VMs:
    1. login to VMware view Horizon administrator.
    2. based on the inventory, select the pool.
    3. in the view of the pool, select the tab "inventory."
    4. Select and right click on a desktop PC, select 'delete pool... '. »
    5. confirm the deletion.

    Software used:
    vCenter Server: 5.5.0, 1945274

    Hello Sun Nathalie,

Finally, I was able to create your question on my test bench, but as I said earlier, it is not possible to remove a power on the virtual machine, which was true. When I deleted the pool which consists of power on VM, I saw in the VC that VM were power off first and delete.

I also talk to the team from the horizon and they said that this device is designed this way to support several other features. To save accidental deletion of the s VM that they introduced the warning message.

    Sorry for your loss.

    Thank you

  • Butterfly e/s on a virtual machine - is this possible?

    Hello

vSphere is perfectly capable to limit the movement of CPU, memory and network, but I can't find any options / documentation on how to limit a VM disk IO. We use NFS as the back-end storage, so I can't set up actions. In addition, configuration of actions is also not exactly what I want; I want to be able to limit a VM for example to have a maximum of 500 per second I/o operations, not more.

I'm asking this is because we have many virtual machines on some data stores NFS; There are a few virtual machines that generate so much IO other VMS are delays etc.

Is it possible somehow? Perhaps by distorting the vSCSI adapter?

    Thank you

    Niels

Hello and welcome to the forums.

For the moment, it is impossible to Accelerator IOPS / s on the drive the way you describe.  No doubt ask the obvious here, but have you identified the source of the IO in virtual machines to ensure that he cannot be stopped?  AV scans, defrags, bulk copies, etc. could be taken into account.

    Good luck!

  • Cloning a Virtual Machine, including ITS SNAPSHOTS

I have a virtual machine with 2 photos and I want to this clone to another disk, such as snapshots are available in the clone. I am currently using VMWare Workstation 10.0. I read a few threads on this topic, but I'm not clear if this can be done or not. I can close the virtual machine and only care about downtime.

    Hello

    1. stop the virtual machine,

    2. close VMware Workstation.

    3. a complete copy of the virtual machine file to a new folder.

    4. Launch VMware Workstation

5 file open-> Select copied VM

    6. choose 'move' on the question, "did you copy or move...» "If you want new hardware, select"Copy"If you want the virtual machine to have new material.

    Basically, that's all.

Note that the new material will trigger things like windows activation to require a new license.

Also note that if you do not receive new material that you can have your machine clone in the same network as the original (among others)

  • Cloning a virtual machine that contains a system of operating under existing Windows license

I have a Dell VRTX with three blades and five VM.  All five VM have Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit as the operating system.

In the near future, I will create at least two new virtual machines that are also having Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit as the operating system.  To make things easy for me, I would like to just clone among the five existing VM to make the new virtual machine.  This should be easier to make a virtual machine from scratch.

However, I'm concerned by the existing Windows license manager.  Ideally, I would like to clone an existing virtual machine, remove (format?) the Windows Server 2012 R2 64 bit installation of VM newly created and then perform a new installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit, install VMware Tools, etc. in the new virtual machine.

    1. what happens in the short time that in double Windows licenses are active?  I fear that the window one or two facilities will become disabled, as well.

    2. is there a better/more way to reach my goal of creating the new virtual machine?

    3. are there additional tips, comments or questions?

    Thanks in advance.

Members of your VM of a domain? If you blow the OS disk, then just make sure that the first time it starts (if you need to start), you disable the network adapters for. Personally, I would create from scratch, especially if they are members of the domain.

  • Cloning of virtual machines

    Hello

I have been asked to clone a virtual machine to test in our environment 4.1 and run sys prep on the new virtual machine to create a new SID etc.

By reading the guide in PDF for what's new (page 180 to be precise) he actually mentions that create new SID is part of the optional steps in creating a clone.  Is this correct and is that enough or should I use sys prep for questions related non - SID?

    All advice would be welcome

    Thank you

    Sam

If you clone a virtual machine, use the customization plug, there is an option to create a new SID.  You must have all appropriate sysprep loaded into the appropriate on your vCenter server folders.

  • Cloning a virtual machine with 2 hard drives!

    Hi all!

I ran into a very annoying problem. I'm trying to Migrate/convert virtual machines to a host in the CR. Each virtual machine has 2 hard drives which are located on 2 different data stores. When I try to migrate or to clone virtual machines from the host on my Cluster I get an 'error of operation period.

After scratching my head for a while, I discovered why. The virtual machine have 2 hard drives on 2 different data stores. Both flat.vmdk files are called eponymous because they are on different data warehouses (TTDC001.vmdk). I created a VM test on the cluster with 2 hard drives and flat.vmdk flies are named TTDC001.vmdk and TTDC001_1.vmdk.

So my conclusion as to why I get "Opération Timeout Error" is that VC trying Migrate/Clone to the virtual machine but is mistake because his attempts to migrate/Clone 2 hard files with the same name!

Can someone give me some pointers as to how I can get around this? I am currently copy the file hard 2nd to my deskop from the data store and rename it then copy him on the new cluster data store to see if it works as you cannot rename the file hard in the data store. It just seems long way round to migrate virtual machines with 2 hard drives, and I don't even know if it works!

    Andy Hughes

    Andy of the evening,

I do it well. Thank you for asking.

So if I'm reading correctly it seems that you are trying to clone a virtual machine from a stand-alone host to a host that is part of a VMware Cluster. When you do this you get a network midway through the copy error. Is this correct?

Can you confirm how fast is connected to the Service Console between the two servers? For this kind of work I would recommend making them run at 1000/full, assuming you're not already. Could you also post the entire message that you get when the clone fails.

    Kind regards
