Cold /Conversion cloning

Will there be a .iso boot to do a p2v offline for vsphere cold.  I installed vcenter server and the standalone converter, but I do not see a .iso to burn to a cd.  Please provide specific information on where to find this .iso.  I've seen many references to these for previous versions, but I could not download the .iso.

  • Cold conversion steps

    Dear team,

I intend to do a p2v for a server that I planned to do a cold conversion of my. Need your help how to convert cold to sucessfully p2v.

    concerning

    Mr. VMware

The term P2V is physical to virtual conversion or powered on virtual machine one.

The term V2V means conversion of slots machines virtual power off the power at the other place.

The term cold conversion means conversion with the help of CD converter based, unfortunately it is outdated for a long time.

    If your real question what?

  • Question: With the new stand-alone converter how do you do a cold P2V? (booting from CD)

With the new stand-alone converter how do you do a cold P2V? (booting from CD)

Well, I see that cold Conversions are more supported.

  • Conversion to Active Directory.

    Hello

We run 3 x VMWare ESX4, vCentre Server hosts and the converter.

We also have 2 Active Directory domain controller currently as physical servers outside the virtual machine environment.

I'm looking forward to use guided codification tool to convert the a DC to a virtual machine - and then let the other like a physical machine.

Anyone know if I am having trouble with going to the DC out of sync or any terrible things happen if I should try it?  Is there best practice procedures that this kind of thing - or things to aovid?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Steve

Recommended method is to build a new domain controller instead of doing a P2V.

But if you do a P2V to the existing one, be sure to use cold conversion (using the ISO Converter).

  • Windows 2003 fails to start after the conversion from a virtual hard disk with vSphere Standalone Converter 4.0.1

    Hello

I've recently updated my host to vSphere 4. I've also upgraded to vSphere Converter 4.0.1. However, when I convert a Microsoft Windows 2003 virtual hard drive in vSphere, the resulting virtual machine does not start. He gets just after the BIOS screen, then turns black with only a white line in the upper left corner of the console.

I tried the hot and cold conversions. I tried changing the different settings of default conversion. I tried to remove the source machine and recreate.

It worked well under ESX3.5, so I wonder what I'm doing wrong on vSphere.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you.

In v4 disk are in SCSI format only.

Probably also the source was in the SCSI format... so v7 to the IDE format give you not configured in the bootloader of the disks.

  • VMware Converter standalone OR... I'M CONFUSSED!  Help, please

    Hello

I have the vmware converter plugin installed.  What is this for?  I can't find any documentation.  The only documentation I can find is for the stand-alone version.  Work together or what?  Then the documentation still says to install the converter on the source machine and I understand not what converter, they're talking about. I want to do a cold cloning on my SQL servers.  It's the standalone "VMware-converter - 4.0.1 - 161434.exe" and it's the VMware converter ' VMware - Converter.exe "I use the standalone version for a test of my Vista machine as a clone of good hot and has worked.  But I do not understand the cold cloning process.  Can someone point me to the documentation.

My environment is PE2950, ESXi 4.0 embedded, vCenter Server vSphere 4.0.  I am cloning all standard W2K8 servers.  Some SQL, domain controllers and servers of rest files.  A Server Application.

    Help!

    Thank you

    GEOBrasil

    GEOBrasil,

I understand the confusion around the different products of converter.  I hope that I can help you better understand which version is right for you.  The reason for the different versions is based on what type of conversion you want to do, which are based on physical operating systems (Source) and your virtual environment (Target) is going to be.

Couple of warning or best practices:

-VMware recommends NO conversion P2V from DC.  It is better to build NEW virtual machines for this.

-Hang your applications (SQL, WEb, etc.) before making a hot-clone (plug-in or standalone Enterprise)

First, for each platform VI3.x, VI4.x there are TWO business (plugin) version and a standalone version (Windows & Linux applications)

-VMware comparison chart gives an overview of the differences (http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/get.html)

    Non-exhaustive summary below:

    Enterprise Edition:

Pros: vCenter integration and automation, supports

Cons: you have to pay for it (you already have it if not the factor in your assessment.  No 'multi-stage' conversion (i.e. 1 snapshot converter, deltas on a machine running are lost or migrated manually).  No Linux support. Can't stand VI as a platform to target.  Includes the CD "cold-clone".

    Stand-alone Edition:

Benefits: support Linux.  Supports the VMware Desktop products (workstation, Fusion, etc.) as target platforms. "Several steps" cloning, intial snapshot conversion as deltas.  Source and target of service and the power of command for Windows.

Cons: Billable per-incident support.  No automation, scheduling.

    Cold-conversion

Benefits: no changes can occur on the source server.  preserves the logical partitions.  No service application comes into conflict with the local area.  No installation on the source area

Disadvantages: Requires downtime for the source server.  Requires the driver support for all devices on a physical to be present in BootCD (WinPE) Server

    Hope this helps

  • vCenter Server 5 install in a virtual machine or not?

    Hi all.

We have a health care environment small assisted living with a dozen sites/servers

A server has 3 VMw4 vms on it.

We received two new servers ESXi installed 5. They will host several virtual machines of Windows Server for most of the migration of the current VMw4.

I want to install vCenter Server 5 to manage.

My book of VMware by Lowe, he mentions that install the vCenter server in a virtual machine has limits.

It mentions cold migration, cloning and editing material are not available.

He also mentions the considerations with the help of a distributed virtual switch.

Ufortunately that he won't go into details.

But there seems to be benefits such as the backup server and fast food when you use a virtual machine.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

It is one of the common design decision. now VMware recommended is to use a virtual machine.

some of the benefits you can get are: -.

The vCenter Server system can be revived in a cluster of high availability of vSphere

VM resources CPU and memory can be easily resized. The vCenter Server system also benefits from vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) cluster workload balancing.

You can easily save or create a virtual machine as needed.

him as a physical Machine will be some disadvantages such as:-

To ensure availability, you must purchase and use additional software such as vCenter Server Heartbeat or a third-party clustering solution.

You must properly size the physical machine's resources.

You must have a separate system and use imaging software to take a snapshot of a physical machine.

  • migrate virtual machines to esxi 3.5 free vsphere 4.1 without vcenter

    Hi all

I have vms on 2 hosts esxi 3.5 with direct (without san)-attached storage that I want to migrate to a new server esxi under license of 4.1 vsphere essentials. I intend using the stand-alone converter to migrate virtual machines from 3.5 to 4.1 and then upgrade the other two hosts to 4.1 and then moving some virtual machines using the converter.

I have Web servers that I don't want to bring down more than 10 to 20 minutes (not the 1 to 2 hours that should be a cold conversion with converter) so I try to use the feature p2v on the virtual machine running Web servers.

Has anyone done this with no san and no vcenter? If so how did you do?

is it possible to migrate without losing configurations of network adapter in the virtual machine?

I can just do something like taking a snapshot of the system of runnying, then copy files to new host, then add to the inventory, upgrade tools, hardware upgrade?

    Thank you!

is it possible to migrate without losing configurations of network adapter in the virtual machine?

After you copy the files and re - add to inventory new virtual machine, you must take care on the issue of handgun that you see in the market.

Choose I_moved the files to keep the VM UUID and the same virtual MAC address.

  • Physical to virtual clustering on vmware

    Hi all

We plan to convert one of our (AD) domain controller in Virtual box, then must make grouping with another physical box (DHCP).

Can someone help me on this...

    First need to know

1 can we do clustering on physical Virtaul-bix in a windows environment. ?

    2. Keeeping (ADC) box of vmware domain controller is recommended... a... ? If so can we Virtaul virtual or physical to virtual clustering.

Note: The controller (ADC) of area intended only DHCP enabled no specified ROLE on this.

    Thanks in advance

    Concerning

    Konate

    What do P2V ADC?

    This is a wrong approach

AD is a database structure that could not be stopped on a running system.

So the only way to make a coherent P2V, it is use a cold conversion (but you need the Enterprise Converter) or try to do it in Restore Mode Active Directory.

  • Where to find image Converter Boot CD

Anyone know where I can get this? I found an older post that had a URL, but this page is now for the product standalone freebee. I have of deliverance for the Enterprize converter and have the plugin installed, but have never had to make a clone of cold. Thank you in advance,

    Chris

    Sorry Chris,

I don't know what I was on earlier when I answered it!

From the manual of the 4 converter - you need to download a previous version (for example, Enterprise 3.x) to get the CD ColdClone

    Prepare for cold cloning

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0 can't stand the cold of cloning, you must use an older version

Converter edition boot CD. Features supported on the boot CD depend on the version of the product you choose.

VMware Converter 3.0.x Enterprise edition is not a free software product.

    Procedure

1 to get a bootable CD, go to the download of the VMware Web site and download Converter 3.0.x Enterprise

    installation.

2 extract the .iso CD boot from the installation package.

3 burn the .iso of the CD boot to a CD.

    My apologies for misleading you.

    If you go here-> http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/

Straight down, select VMware vCenter Converter 3.0.3 (Standalone Enterprise Edition) and you can download it from there. Hope it clears everything for you

  • Exchange 2007, P2V or migrate the mailboxes?

We have our Exchange 2007 running on two servers environment. A server is to access to the client and one for the letters/hub transport boxes. Months ago we did a P2V on the client access server and there work very well since. Next week we want to virtualize our box at the letters/hub transport server. I got two options:

    1. perform a P2V with VMWare Converter making a cold conversion

2 set up a new server instance of the letters/hub Exchange 2007 under VMWare boxes and then migrate the mailboxes. It would involve a new installation of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (64-bit) and a new installation of Exchange 2007 under VMWare and then using Microsoft tools to migrate the mailboxes.

Any thoughts on how we should go?

We run what ESX 3.5 fully patched. Our current box the letters/hub Exchange Server works on a blade in my IBM BladeCenter. We present this server with two LUNS of my Netapp FAS3020, one for the mail store and one for the log files. The disks we use currently in the Netapp are SATA. Monday we're going to bring online a new tray of fiber channel disk, and this will be where the data for our virtualized Exchange servers store will reside. In the end, it would be easier if the virtualized Exchange Server had the same IP address and the host name, otherwise I have some additional work to do with my ISP and my Barracuda Spam firewall. If we move to the second track, I don't know if this part will be delicate.

We have about 600 mailboxes and our database of mailboxes is about 90 GB in size

Migrate the mailboxes - fully phased in with little or no risk and roll back is a snap.

  • Cold Clone W2k3 no boot.ini after conversion file

    Hello world

I tried to make a cold clone of W2K3 Server on IBM x 346 8840 with new enterprise Converter 4.0.3 and cloning ends successfully ab. But the boot of the destination VMS on ESX 3.5 U3 Cluster fails with a BSOD and an error message like "corrupt boot.ini". OK, let's go I have connected the new hard Boot Partition file to another virtual machine and looked at the necessary boot files. No file boot.ini in there. I copied a boot.ini file from another virtual machine with the same geometry of disc and the Buslogic controller, but it does not help.

Is there anyone who knows why this happens, and what can I do to prevent this? I spend a lot of x 346 and it woul'nt be funny if I have the same problem on all machines.

    Thanks for the help,

    joergimo

    joergimo,

Welcome to the VMware Community Forums.

Is there anyone who knows why this happens, and what can I do to prevent this?

I never saw a cold clone remove or damage a Boot.ini file.  The worst I've seen, it's that the boot.ini file is an unsupported ARC path.  But which results in a BSOD 0x0000007B (inaccessible boot device).  Also, if filled with 100% conversion, it means this converter Treaty the boot.ini in the phase of reconfiguration.  If we go to the root cause on the side of converter, then newspapers.  The problem with this... newspapers are stored in RAM to the physical reception and are deleted after the system is restarted.  Is it has not been stored, then they are lost forever.

The real question is: where to go from here.

Given that the virtual machine can be started, you could start on a Windows 2003 Server ISO, in this way, you can perform a /rebuild bootcfg to recreate the boot.ini file.  Essentially, it will treat the virtual machine as if it was physical and the steps are exactly the same.  XE has already posted articles, so I won't repeat that here.

    See you soon,.
