Compromised security fixing Macbook Air running Lion.

My mother got scammed and some people have taken complete control of his computer remotely.  While she didn't give them his information of the Bank, they had total control and therefore no matter what on the computer that could be compromised should be supposed to be compromised.  I plan to wipe the drive and reinstall the software.  I was wondering two things...

Is the recovery partition that put on the computer somewhere safe to reinstall it from Apple?

She's not all backups.  She has some JPEG files she wants.  What is the best way to transfer?  I was thinking a USB key I need to scan with Symantec antivirus.  But I've heard that usbs are dangerous?

She has a Macbook Air.  She was running Lion (10.7).  I don't know until I get my hands on it tomorrow...

Any advice would be great.  Thanks in advance.

Nothing on this box is entirely safe to be safe - even the backups can be suspect.

See re - install or try surgery? for a recent discussion of the present.

Your own USB drives are very likely very well.  Yes, there are ways that USB drives you pick up in a parking lot or in trade shows can cause problems, but this isn't the case here.  Buy the disc, erase and format it in HFS + on your Mac and allows to transfer what is important.

I would probably do a full backup of the entire system on an external drive, on the off chance that there is something else that may be necessary.

FWIW, anti-virus and anti-malware tools are not known to be particularly robust or reliable products, are not intended to detect backdoors, some have a history of having backdoors and security bugs in packages and are not designed to defend against what is happening in a growing number of people; against scams and phishing attacks, as has happened here.

    Hi jpjones2,

It worked before? If so, I suggest restarting the base station AirPort, Mac and the Photosmart. Then test it again. Ensure that the Photosmart works well autonomous - try printing a copy on the device.

Is only the failing printing and analysis very well? Or you are not able to install the device on your Mac at all?

  • iCloud mail makes MacBook Air running very hot and very fast battery drain

Given that the upgrade to El Capitan and running the latest updates of my MacBook Air has worked very (almost too hot to the touch in some places) hot and the fan that has happened all the time. The battery is also in very quickly - I can sit and look at the percentage count.

If I disable my iCloud in Mail preferences the computer messaging service cools, the fan stops and the battery stabilizes. So it must be a problem with iCloud mail. Anyone who has ideas or fixes for this?

  • Fan runs almost always since the installation of Sierra and MacBook Air running Mac OS.

    Hello

Since upgrading to Mac OS Sierra last night on my MacBook Air (2013, i7, 8gbRAM), fans work almost always, even when I use Safari.  Previously, the fans would go only when I was playing a game, or video edition.  The basis of my Macbook Air is also much more hot he was under El Capitan - once again, just when you use Safari.  As a result, my battery life is horrible - dropped from 100% to 23% in a little over an hour.  Once again, under El Capitan, if I was just using internet, use of an hour would see the maximum of 10 to 15% of decline in battery.

I turned off my Macbook Air and it turned on again after fifteen minutes, but in 10-15 minutes, fans revived upward and the base (and the top of the keyboard) heated again.  No uncomfortable levels, but certainly noticeable levels.

Just to remind - I use Safari only when this happens.  Moreover, since the beginning of this question five minutes ago, the % of battery has dropped from 29 percent to 22 percent and the fans are still whirring like the dickens.

No idea why this is happening?

  • MacBook Air run on electricity

The light on the power supply cable is red.

I got my MacBook Air for about a week.  I kept plugged in most of the time, while I use it.  Even today, the plug light goes from green to red.  The computer is running on battery only.  I moved the cord to several different electrical outlets.  When I plug it in, the green light goes on for 3-4 seconds and then turns red.  This happens repeatedly.

    What is the problem?

    How should I do?

Red means load. Medium green fully charged.

  • 2012 the MacBook Air running hot and slow

After about 20 minutes using my 2012 MacBook Air gets very hot and the cooling fan starts to operate at full speed. At the same time, it slows down considerably. Is this a sign that the battery must be replaced (anyone know the approximate cost to do this?)? However, I have no problem to recharge the battery and it seems to work for a reasonable period between charges.

  • MacBook Air (old 2009) the Lion OS upgrade

I have an old Macbook Air 2009 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5.  I also have a Macbook Pro, who ran the Mavericks when buying, but I've updated free in Yosemite.

I would like to know if I can rank up to my old Macbook air Lion to the Mavericks.  If not, I have a Snow Leopard drive, should I switch to that instead or it would be wiser to stick to Lion?

If you are satisfied with the MacBook Air running 10.7 performance upgrade 10.8 ( Mt Lion) are at the Apple Web site. I have provided the link. Mavericks (10.9) has a lot of memory more 10.7 and 10.8 were probably not be a good idea to upgrade to. Snow Leopard was 10.6 so would be going backwards. If your computer is too slow with 10.7 then back to 10.6, which is even less destitute of resources that 10.7 is would be a good choice. The thing to remember is that Apple is no longer provides updates for older versions of the operating system which make the computer more vulnerable to security problems.

  • MacBook Air restarts all sleep/hibernation

I have an early 2015 Macbook Air running Yosemite 10.10.5 with all updates.  In the last month, I noticed that when I'm back to using my Macbook Air after staying asleep/hibernation I see the login screen.  My Macbook Air has probably restarted on its own.  No error message.  When I look at my system log, I don't see a panic crash.  But I have a number of Macbook Air.crash log records but I'm not sure if they are related.  When I look at all the records show a crash of the process of galileod of all kinds.  Wire 0.  These are not related to the software.  Any ideas on how I can diagnose what is happening here?  Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Cannot open the contacts on MacBook air

I can't open the contacts on MacBook air (OS X Yosemite 10.10.5)

    Any solution?

    Good afternoon maorts,.

I understand that you are not able to open the Contacts application on your MacBook Air running OS X Yosemite.   When this issue is produced?  Will there be any changes made to your computer?

The first thing I would say is to restart your computer.  This system reset is often all that is needed.   If the initial restart does not resolve the problem, try to start your computer in safe mode.

OS X Yosemite: start in safe mode

If the problem still persists, if you use iCloud, check that your contacts are at www.icloud.com.

Try to create a new user account.  Getting the Contacts app?  You can add a contact to it?  This will isolate the question to your user account or to a question of scale.

OS X Yosemite: set up users on your Mac.

If the problem turns out to be systemwide, then you should make a backup of your computer using Time Machine.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Then you can reinstall OS X Yosemite or update your software if your MacBook Air is compatible.

    How to reinstall OS X

OS X can be installed on the same version or an earlier version of Mac OS X, without deleting your data. You don't need to remove or disable the existing system first.

    1. Start of OS X Recovery now command-r immediately after start-up or that you restart your Mac. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo. Start-up is finished when you see the OS X Utilities window.
    2. Choose to reinstall OS X OS X Utilities window, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
    3. This installs the latest version of Mac OS X, which has already been installed on your Mac.

maorts, please take a look at the resources offered here, try these initial troubleshooting steps and responds with the results in this regard.

    Take care.
