Configuration network ESX 3.5 and Appspeed

I have 3 vswitches and a few groups of ports for different VLANS. If I want to install AppSpeed on esx 3.5 do I need create another vSwitch, port group and put in mode promiscuity with all the natachasery so I can monitor other vswitches and port groups? Or it walk straight on the box without these configurations and probe handles the network part? Need help please, I want to test so I can buy it and if someone has the best practices or configuration, feel free to share.

AppSpeed creates groups of new promiscuity port dedicated for the selected vSwitches. Please note that in all cases, it does NOT change the configuration of the physical network adapters or any other port groups existing settings.

  • Best practices for configuring network ESX

Suppose I have a small resource ESX server with only two physical network cards to work only a few virtual machines.  There are only two physical network adapters cannot be added.  Still, best practice would dictate that this service console would be on its own dedicated physical NIC?  In this scenario puts service console and all the VMs on a pair of network cards grouped better because if a NETWORK card fails both the service console and all virtual machines are still available?  In this case the bandwidth is very low and contention for the network bandwidth is not a problem. Hello.

  • ESX 3.5 and I seem to have lost all the networks.

DL580 G4 with ESX3.5. I've migrated all clients to another ESX Server, but it went a bit strange to say the least.

After the migration, all the guests off I went forward and add more ram and restarted. Server come OK, tells me the IP address to connect to (static) but that's all.

I can ping 127.0.0.1, but not static host ip address, I get an error "connect: could not connect to the network.

If I check the following localions I get zero information in files

    / etc/hosts

    etc/network-scripts/ifcfg-vswif0

    etc/VMware/ESX.conf

If I try the list of network adapters that I get no NICs in the list, if I have the material list network get hardware type and mac address.

    I see no switch to vmware if I try esxcfg-vswitch - l

I tried to restart the network and a few other services that I found on Google, now claim.

If I start using ERD Commander and enable networking I can not use the 2 onboard NICs but can use 2 additional network cards / 4 ports and can ping / map of external drives.

    Hello

I think it would be a case of corrupted file esx.conf. After the upgrade of the host by adding more ram or anything else, you may need to update the initrd image that you don't have and this translates into the corruption of your esx.conf file. Until that time, that it's the only imagination, I can take.

Now, there are simple process of recovery of the original esx.conf file. Please see the procedure below.

    #

Connect to the ESX host with a SSH client, or connect directly to the ESX with KVM console.

    #

Back up the corrupted file esx.conf using the command:

    CP esx.conf /tmp/esx.bad

    #

Copy the image into a temporary directory using a command similar to:

    CP /boot/initrd-2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix.img/tmp

Note: The version of the initrd image is different from the ESX 3.x. If the version in the command / tmp /boot/initrd-2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix.img cp is different, cd to the directory/boot and run the ls command to see your version.

    #

Decompress the image file using the command:

    CD/tmp

    gunzip - dc initrd - 2.4.21 - 47.0.1.ELvmnix.img > initrd.unziped

    #

Create a directory and mount the uncompressed image using the commands:

    mkdir initrd

    Mount-o loop initrd initrd.unziped

    #

Copy the file esx.conf to the directory mounted at/etc/vmware/en using the commands:

    CD/tmp/initrd/etc/vmware

    CP esx.conf/etc/vmware.

    #

Remove the directory mounted in step 5 by using the commands:

    CD/tmp

    umount/tmp/initrd

    #

Restart management agents for the changes to take effect.

Now other solutions could be looking to recreate the Console of the ESX Service and see if that can help you. Procedure is as below:

On your system, the vswif, vmnic, numbers of vSwitch and network settings are different.

    1.

Run the following command to list the name of the map of vswif:

    esxcfg-vswif - l

    2.

Run the following command to remove the adapter vswif:

    esxcfg-vswif - del vswif0

    3.

Run the following command to list the name of the vSwitch:

    esxcfg-vswitch - l

    4.

Run the following command to remove the vSwitch:

    esxcfg-vswitch vSwitch0 d

    5.

Run the following command to create the vSwitch:

    -an esxcfg-vswitch vSwitch0

    6.

Run the following commands to create ports for vSwitch default groups:

    esxcfg-vswitch - a 'network of the VM' vSwitch0

    esxcfg-vswitch - a "Service Console" vSwitch0

    7.

Run the following command to create the adapter vswif:

    esxcfg-vswif - add-- ip = nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn-"Service Console" portgroup mask = 255.255.255.0 subnet vswif0

    8.

Run the following command to verify that the settings in the network file are correct:

    sysconfig cat

    Networking = yes

    GATEWAYDEV = vswif0

    HOSTNAME = Host.domain.com

    Gateway = nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

    9.

Run the following commands to list all network cards and associate a vmnic which has a status of site link:

    esxcfg-NICS - l

    esxcfg-vswitch - L vmnic1 vSwitch0

    10.

Run the following command to verify that the vmnic is associated with the vSwitch:

    esxcfg-vswitch - l

    11.

IP address ping to verify network connectivity. If the ping fails remove the previous vmnic from the vSwitch and try another adapter that has a

State of the link towards the top.

    esxcfg-vswitch - U vmnic1 vSwitch0

    esxcfg-vswitch - L vmnic2 vSwitch0

    12.

Run the following command to change the ID vlan a vSwitch

    # esxcfg - vswitch - p "VM network 1" - v 10 vSwitch0

    13.

If you make manual changes to sysconfig, run the following command to restart the network service:

    service network restart

  • NIC teaming on ESX 5.1 and NGC failover

    Hi all

A quick question. I know I read it before, but I can't find the reference again once. What is the recommended setting between allow vNic activate failover on cisco UCS and strategy setting on ESX 5.1 of the network?

I know that I had read somewhere when the grouping of network cards is configured on ESX failover authorized UCS, ESX goes haywire if a path is lost the UCS.

Our installation program running on UCS 2.04 Manager has with a mixture of blades M2 and M3 with M81kr and 1240/1280 cards respectively.

Never use a fabric with a hypervisor vswitch failover. Let the failover of the vSwitch handle network failure mechanism.

For ESX once you have two NICs attached to the vSwitch or a DVS it will automatically load balance and failover. You don't want you combine this with the UCS fabric failover.

  • Configuring network DMZ, internal using Nexus 1000v

Hello peoples, this is my first post in the forums.

    I am trying to build a profile for my customer with the following configuration;

    4 x ESXi hosts on the DL380 G7 each with 12 GB of RAM, CPU Core X 5650 of 2 x 6, 8 x 1 GB NIC

    2 x left iSCSI SAN.

    The hardware components and several design features, on that I have no control, they were decided and I can't change, or I can't add additional equipment. Here's my constraints;

    (1) the solution will use the shared for internal, external traffic and iSCSI Cisco network switches.

    (2) the solution uses a single cluster with each of the four hosts within that group.

    (3) I install and configure a Nexus 1000v in the environment (something I'm not want simply because I have never done it before). The customer was sold on the concept of a solution of cheap hardware and shared because they were told that using a N1Kv would solve all the problems of security.

Before I learned that I would have to use a N1Kv my solution looked like the following attached JPG. The solution used four distributed virtual switches and examples of how they were going to be configured is attached. Details and IP addresses are examples.

    My questions are:

    (1) what procedure should I use to set up the environment, should I build the dvSwtiches as described and then export it to the N1Kv?

    (2) how should I document place this solution? In general in my description I will have a section explaining each switch, how it is configured, vital details, port groups etc. But all of this is removed and replaced with uplink ports or something is it not?

    (3) should I be aiming to use a different switch by dvSwitch, or I can stem the heap and create groups of different ports, is it safe, is there a standard? Yes, I read the white papers on the DMZ and the Nexus 1000v.

    (4) is my configuration safe and effective? Are there ways to improve it?

All other comments and suggestions are welcome.

Hello and welcome to the forums,

    (1) what procedure should I use to set up the environment, should I build the dvSwtiches as described and then export it to the N1Kv?

N1KV replace dvSwitch, but there isn't that a N1KV ONLY where there are many dvSwitches N1KV would use the same rising in the world.

    (2) how should I document place this solution? In general in my description I will have a section explaining each switch, how it is configured, vital details, port groups etc. But all of this is removed and replaced with uplink ports or something is it not?

If you use N1KV you rising the pSwitch to the N1KV.

If you use dvSwitch/vSwitch you uplink to the pSwitches to the individual dvSwitch/vSwitch in use.

    (3) should I be aiming to use a different switch by dvSwitch, or I can stem the heap and create groups of different ports, is it safe, is there a standard? Yes, I read the white papers on the DMZ and the Nexus 1000v.

No standard and Yes in many cases, it can be considered secure. If your existing physical network relies on VLANs and approves the Layer2 pSwitches, then you can do the exact same thing in the virtual environment and be as safe as your physical environment.

However, if you need separation to the layer of pSwitch then you must maintain various vSwitches for this same separation. Take a look at this post http://www.virtualizationpractice.com/blog/?p=4284 on the subject.

    (4) is my configuration safe and effective? Are there ways to improve it?

Always ways to improve. I would like to start looking into the defense-in-depth the vNIC and layers of edge within your vNetwork.

  • MD3000i configuration with ESX 4

I configured the ESX 4 server, I configured the IP for storage MD3000i (management 2 port & iSCSI 4 port), port all attached to a giga bit switch & I have installed "drive modular storage management client" on my laptop rolled in the same IP subnet & attached to the same switch.

Now when I try to detect the host (host ESX) of modular machine, it is not able to find any host, I wanted to do it because until unless I get a host machine I can't map a virtual drive to the ESX host...

Please help me on this issue...

Note: Side ESX, I configured everythging, like vmkernel, etc...

First of all, you need to work on your ESX: create the vmkernel for iSCSI (one for each network) interfaces, enable iSCSI on ESX firewall, turn it on and get into the target.

At this point, you can create the configuration of the host and the virtual disk link.

  • Difference between Esx v 2 and 3 and ESX 2.5 and 3.5

    Hello

I want to know the differences between ESX V.2 and 3 and ESX 2.5 and 3.5. can someone help me on respect.

    Karthik.

    Hello

The biggest difference between ESX 2.x and 3.x is how the virtualization of the boots as well as configurations of network virtual host.

In ESX 2.x booted Linux then VMware took control.

In ESX 3.x VMware started then place the unit of management within a virtual machine started.

ESXi boots the vmkernel then starts a Posix environment in the vmkernel.

The book of VMware ESX Server in the enterprise passes over these differences in a bit of detail, if you are interested.

  • Configuration network LaserJet P1606dn

    Hello world

I have a problem with establishing a new LaserJet P1606dn on our network. The installation software provided with the printer assumes the environment uses a DHCP server to obtain an initial IP address and then you can evaluate the printer through the web interface and change it. My problem, we do not have DHCP on our network and I need to set up an IP address on this printer. My question, is there any other utility that can be used to find the printer, and then set the printer with a static IP address.

Thank you in advanced for assistance.

    Steven

Too bad. I found another way to access the printer. It seems to have assigned the printer an IP 169.254.x.x wherein I changed my desktop to the same subnet and then access the printers web interface to configure networking for the correct IP subnet.

  • Network printer with XP and Vista

I initially installed my printer (Canon i850) on the XP computer, then I disconnected the USB cable and plugged into the Vista computer.  Vista has found a driver and it worked.  Then I put in network computers via ethernet and a router.  Now, I try to add the printer as a network printer on the XP computer, but he can't find a driver.  Computer that needs a new driver and what type?
Is not the XP computer generate a print file using a XP compatible driver, send the file to the Vista machine, and it sends the file to the printer?  If that's true, he should be able to use the driver that is already on the XP machine.

    Extremely misleading terminology

When you use the Add Printer Wizard you must select: "Local printer attached to this computer" even if the printer is connected to another computer.
Only after that I tried this option has noticed the "(i) ' who says: to configure a network printer that is not attached to a print server, use the»»
local printer option.  Indeed, he tells you to do two things in the face.

I think that the Assistant must have been modified to only three choices: (1) Local printer, network (2) printer connected to another computer, (3) network printer attached to a print server.
The underlying confusion is due to the double meaning of the term "network printer".

My problem is now solved, but not through Microsoft or you guys.

You must run ' vmware - config.pl ' to configure virtual networking. Then you choose eth2 as your adapter to fill. That's it for the side host. The customer must have a vNIC, type "bridged" and their own IP configuration valid IP range of the physical network subnet where eth2 is attached to.

That answer your question, or have I missed something?
