Configuration of frames

When the implementation of frames must be end to end I've heard mixed in this area results.

Hi Mark,

Yes, when you set up frames what must be the same value. So if your UCS Manager is 1500, your switch upstream must be 1500 and your operating system must be 1500. A lot of people don't do it and that causes problems.

You had another post in which I've linked a guide that discusses the frames, I refer to this material during installation.

  • ADM centralized Configuration Manager

I wonder what these two menu that appears currently to be disabled under Management Appliance > Service Central > Web > centralized Configuration Manager reports & centralized.   I have two SMA using scheduled backup to reproduce the spam quarantine and 3 SEC in a clustered environment.

  • Port-groups, vSphere 5 and Jumbo (iSCSI) frames

We will implement a UCS system with EMC iSCSI storage. Since this is my first time, I'm a little insecure in design, although I have acquired a lot of knowledge to read in this forum and meanders.

    We will use the 1000V.

    1. is it allowed to use only a GROUP of ports uplink with the following exchanges: mgmt, vmotion, iscsi, vm network, external network?

My confusion here is what jumboframes? Should we not separate for this connection? In this design all executives are using jumboframes (or are this set by portgroup?)

I read something about the use of the class of frames extended Service. Maybe it's the idea here.

    2. I read in a thread do not include mgmt and VMotion in the 1000V and put it on a vs. Is this correct?

In this case, the design of uplink would be:

    1: Mgmt + vMotion (2 vNIC, VSS)

    2: iSCSi (2 vNIC, 1000v)

3 data VM, external traffic (2 vNIC, 1000v)

    I have 2 follow-up questions:

    1. What is the reason I cannot use a 1000V uplink profile for the vMotion and management? Is it just for simplicity people do it that way? Or can I do it if I want? What do you do?

[Robert] There is no reason.  Many customers run all their virtual networking on the 1000v.  This way they don't need vmware admins to manage virtual switches - keeps it all in the hands of the networking team where it belongs.  Management Port profiles should be set as "system vlans" to ensure access to manage your hosts is always forwarding.  With the 1000v you can also leverage CBWFQ which can auto-classify traffic types such as "Management", "Vmotion", "1000v Control", "IP Storage" etc.

    2. Shouldn't I use MTU size 9216?

[Robert] UCS supports up to 9000 then assumed overhead.  Depending on the switch you'll want to set it at either 9000 or 9216 (whichever it supports).

    3. How do I do this step: "

Ensure the switch north of the UCS Interconnects are marking the iSCSI target return traffic with the same CoS marking as UCS has configured for jumbo MTU.  You can use one of the other available classes on UCS for this - Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum."

Does the Cisco switch also use the same terms "Bronze", Silver", "Gold" or "Platimum" for the classes? Should I configure the trunk with the same CoSes?

[Robert] The Plat, Gold, Silver, Bronze are user friendly words used in UCS Classes of Service to represent a defineable CoS value between 0 to 7 (where 0 is the lowest value and 6 is  highest value). COS 7 is reserved for internal traffic. COS value "any"  equals to best effort.  Weight values range from 1 to 10. The bandwidth percentage can be  determined by adding the channel weights for all channels then divide  the channel weight you wish to calculate the percentage for by the sum  of all weights.

Example.  You have UCS and an upstream N5K with your iSCSI target directly connected to an N5K interface. If your vNICs were assigne a QoS policy using "Silver" (which has a default CoS 2 value), then you would want to do the same upstream by a) configuring the N5K system MTU of 9216 and tag all traffic from the iSCSI Array target's interface with a CoS 2.  The specifics for configuring the switch are specific to the model and SW version.  N5K is different than N7K and different than IOS.  Configuring Jumbo frames and CoS marking is pretty well documented all over.

Once UCS receives the traffic with the appropriate CoS marking it will honor the QoS and dump the traffic back into the Silver queue. This is the "best" way to configure it but I find most people just end up changing the "Best Effort" class to 9000 MTU for simplicity sake - which doesn't require any upstream tinkering with CoS marking.  Just have to enable Jumbo MTU support upstream.

    4. Concerning Nk1: Jason Nash has said to include vMotion in the System VLANs. You do not recommend this in previous threads. Why?

[Robert] You have to understand what a system vlan is first.  I've tirelessly explained this on vaiours posts .  System VLANs allow an interface to always be forwarding.  You can't shut down a system vlan interface.  Also, when a VEM is reboot, a system vlan interface will be FWDing before the VEM attaches to the VSM to securely retrieve it's programming.  Think of the Chicken & Egg scenario.  You have to be able to FWD some traffic in order to reach the VSM in the first place - so we allow a very small subnet of interfaces to FWD before the VSM send the VEM's programming - Management, IP Storage and Control/Packet only.  All other non-system VLANs are rightfully BLKing until the VSM passes the VEM its policy.  This secures interfaces from sending traffic in the event any port profiles or policies have changed since last reboot or module insertion.  Now keeping all this in mind, can you tell me the instance where you've just reboot your ESX and need the VMotion interface fowarding traffic BEFORE communicating with the VSM?  If the VSM was not reachable (or both VSMs down) the VMs virtual interface would not even be able to be created on the receiving VEM.  Any virtual ports moved or created require VSM & VEM communication.  So no, the vMotion interface vlans do NOT need to be set as system VLANs.  There's also a max of 16 port profiles that can have system vlans defined, so why chew up one unnecessarily?

    5. Do I have to set spanning-tree commands and to enable global BPDU Filter/Guard on both the 1000V side and the uplink switch?

[Robert] The VSM doesn't participate in STP so it will never send BPDU's.  However, since VMs can act like bridges & routers these days, we advise to add two commands to your upstream VEM uplinks - PortFast and BPDUFilter.  PortFast so the interface is FWD faster (since there's no STP on the VSM anyway) and BPDUFilter to ignore any received BPDU's from VMs.  I prefer to ignore them then using BPDU Gaurd - which will shutdown the interface if BPDU's are received.

    Thanks,

    Atle, Norway

    Edit:

Do you have some recommendations on the weigting of the CoS?

[Robert] I don't personally.  Others customer can chime in on their suggestions, but each environement is different.  VMotion is very bursty so I wouldn't set that too high.  IP storage is critical so I would bump that up a bit.  The rest is up to you.  See how it works, check your QoS & CoS verification commands to monitor and adjust your settings as required.

    E.g:

    IP storage: 35

    Vmotion: 35

    Vmdata: 30

and I can then assign management VM-kernels to the Vmdata Cos.

  • Frames from end to end

If only the source and destination supports jumbo frame and middle networking devices are not. When that will happen? Destination can receive the data or not?

If the indicator "-non-fragment" is set on the package it will be simply dropped by the network device that is not configured for frames.

If the flag is not set, it will fragment package (split into smaller packages) and send them to the next hop.

So to answer your question, the more likely the package will arrive, but the payload is fragmented into several smaller packages.

  • ESXi 5 and Jumbo frames

What is the proper way to configure some jumbo frames for an ESXi cluster used shared storage NetApp?  Configure extended frames to the bottom of the VM Guest NETWORK card or I stop at the dvSwitch?  I already configure jumbo images throughout the storage on the physical hardware.  It's just the virtual machine where I'm not sure and if I do not set up the virtual machine, will there be problems?

    Thank you!!

Then, you don't need to do anything for the virtual machines.

  • Test frames

I am setting up the frames for the first time on this network and want to make sure that they are working from end to end.  I did in the past with windows by running 'ping < storage_proc_IP > f-l 9000', so I thought that the same type of thing could work in mode not supported for ESXi 4.1.

After you have configured the frames extended on the vmknics, vSwitch, physical switches and storage system, I SSH into my box of ESXi 4.1 and ran 'vmkping < storage_proc_IP > s 9000' and get this answer "9008 bytes of < storage_proc_IP >: icmp_seq = 0 ttl = 255 time = 0.648 ms."  So you it seems that it worked right?

    Well well... being the ever skeptical person I am I then ran this command "vmkping < storage_proc_IP > s 65000" and get this answer "65008 bytes of < storage_proc_IP >: icmp_seq = 0 ttl = 255 time = 1.782 ms."

So, naturally, I searched a fragment anti pass as windows a - f, but I couldn't find one.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to how I should test with ESXi jumbo frames?

  • VMware ESXi4.1 with Jumbo Frames on iSCSI (how to install?)

    Hello

I've read various articles relating to ESXi 4.1 and frames. They all pretty much say the same thing. I'm having some trouble understanding step 3 in the section "Creating a Jumbo Frames - enabled VMkernel interface" in the link below. Could break you the order for me?

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1007654

Step 3 says: to create a VMkernel connection with Jumbo Frame support, run the command:

    esxcfg-vmknic - a-i

My stacked switches cisco 3750G are configured for frames.

Thank you all. This is my first post.

    Mike

Assuming you want to create a vSwitch separated with NIC dedicated to iSCSI traffic, you should do this:

    1.) create a new virtual switch, i.e.

    esxcfg-vswitch - an iscsi switch

2.) enable Jumbo on this virtual switch, i.e.

    esxcfg-vswitch - m 9000 iscsi switch

3.) create a port for the VMkernel module group

    esxcfg-vswitch - a GRPE-iscsi iscsi-switch ports

4.) create VMkernel. You must specify an IP address for use with the VMkernel, and a network mask and the MTU size, i.e.

    esxcfg-vmknic - a-i 192.168.100.1 - n 255.255.255.0 m 9000 iscsi-portgroup

5.) associate a physical NETWORK card with the new switch, i.e.

    esxcfg-vswitch - L VMNIC5 iscsi switch

You must run the command-line jumbos steps since there is no GUI Option - at least none that I'm aware off the coast.

same cable is used for internet, navigation, ftp etc as this is the file sharing now

is it possible to use a cross over cable in the empty slots of ethernet between 2 macs to separate the internet traffic from file-sharing?

I would probably need to manually set the IP to the newly used slot

What should I use for a speech of "router" for the new ports?

    and

both need to see the internet as it is

    Michael kulyk

Your current connection (through the router) is fine.

    (1) be sure the router can move to Gigabit Ethernet speeds, and

    (2) that all of THE cables have all eight drivers present, and

    (3) manually to configure Jumbo frames (9000), full duplex, flow control

There is no acceleration of direct wiring computer-to-computer, because it's already happening - that the 'Switch' of the router part is involved, and the data is transferred directly between the two computers.

To 'see each and other files' enable file sharing in the sharing on both computers Panel.

  • Cisco Small Business Equipment VLAN security issue

Hi, I have a RV220W router and a switch SG200-18. I'm trying to set up my network to be as secure as possible...

The RV220W has the configuration of VLAN next:

Port 1: Manage, DMZ, Business, Test, Diag, home and anywhere (not identified)

Port 2-4: not used (unidentified) and people with DISABILITIES

All ports were excluded from the default VLAN

SG200-18 has the configuration of VLAN next:

Port 1 (trunk): manage, DMZ, Business, Test, Diag, home and anywhere (not identified)

Port 2-17 (access): not used (unidentified) and people with DISABILITIES

Port 18 (access): manage (unlabeled) * used to configure and manage the switching and routing of a pc

All ports were excluded from the default VLAN

I installed this according to the instructions in the Cisco security best practices: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/si/casi/ca6000/prodlit/vlnwp_wp.pdf

My questions regarding my network of quenching of Double-Encapsulated 802. 1 q / attack of VLAN nested. The white paper suggests to disable the VLAN native/unidentified all trunk ports... Unfortunately the RV220W seems to require a VLAN without label on each port (won't allow me to only have the tag VLAN)... Can someone suggest a more secure configuration given that I work with?

    Thank you!

P.S. the switch allows me to configure a port mode 'General' where I can configure the frame Type to "Admit tag only" to allow only traffic labeled... I don't know if this would increase security?

In what concerns the vlan tag/UNTAG Yes. You must take into account the limitation of the router.

  • iSCSI storage problem ESXi 5 u1

    Hello

We have six ESXi 5 u1 servers connected to the storage unit Dell EqualLogic 65xx series. On ESXi systems we use the iSCSI Software and PSP is set to RoundRobin. We investigated a question where randomly throughout the day that we receive the following warning:

    VCenter:

Failed to write command to write-suspended partition naa.6090a08890b27eeab8cee499fb01a0f6:1

BC: 1858: cannot write (couriers) object '. iormstats.SF': level core exceeded Maximum attempts

Also, we see a lot of messages indicating a loss of connectivity, iSCSI volumes:

Lost access to the volume (LUN_NAME) 4f58ac5f-ef525322-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX because of connectivity issues. Recovery attempt is underway and the result will be
    reported in no time.

This event is generated by all six guests at random time intervals and LUN iSCSI target different. At the same time, we notice a very high spike in CPU usage of 100% on the host that generates the message

One thing we found through tests of vmkping is that ESXi hosts are configured for extended frames (9000 MTU vmk, vswitch and adapters), but the storage network, does not allow frames.

This could be an indication of serious IP fragmentation on iSCSI? How we measure this?

Do you know if the side SAN is configured for frames? If not, then it should probably not be a problem, given that the TCP connection will take care of the other so-called MSS sizes and your guests should get off by default the images of sizes.

The worst situation would be if both the ESXi and the SAN supports jumbo frames, but not the switches between the two. Because the switches are 'invisible' problems don't happen, until you actually start sending larger images and those will arrive in silence by switches, i.e. no IP fragmentation.

Have you also checked with vmkping what kind of end-to-end connectivity, you have? Options-d and s are very important get right: http://rickardnobel.se/archives/992

I have 3 physical blades that have 2 NIC in them and connect to our SAN via iSCSI, each blade aura 3-5 virtual computers on it. Order for vMotion and HA to work what is the best way to configure my management ports, VMkernels (iscsi, vmotion) as not to kill my network when I need to use vMotion? How can I split everything that upward through the NETWORK interface card? My vMotion iSCSI must be on a subnet on its own network card with all the traffic server and management makes on the other network adapter? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    John

Well, you won't pretend to CPU\Memory... but I would suggest that you remove the CPU limit, so that every care receives full 2.66 mhz frequency.  To improve throughput of ISCSI, you need to configure jumbo frames.

    On the vmnic...

Initially, I had the same problem but only because I changed my name default data mover "server_2" to "vsa01-server_2.

The problem disappeared after changing the name to server_2.

I searched EMC powerlink and found that a problem with the old version SRA about interconect name cannot contain "_".

Your newspaper, the interconnect name is 'dr_to_pr '.

You might want to try to change it to "dr to pr'.»

I read the guides to good practice and familiarize themselves with VAAI vStorage API allowing integration of table, but remained little clear on the two designs I am currently working on. Can someone provide suggestions for the following configurations? Thanks,-Jeff

    CONFIG HAS

    ESX 3.5

Two network ports available for iSCIS traffic on physical servers

two controllers Server - NetApp 2040 - iSCSI - each controller can only see the LUNS on this controller

The controller has two network cards configured in a high HEAT

Ports switch Cisco 24 in the interval configured for frames and the VLAN native

Question - should separate vSwitches two be created on networks separated for failover, or network cards must be involved?

If the network adapters are associated are active, reserve active?

    B CONFIG

    ESX 4.1

Up to six network ports available for iSCIS traffic on physical servers

iSCSI - 480 EMC server, two controllers, level of talent to support VAAI

Each controller can see all LUNS

Each contreller will have four network adapters configured in two ALIVE

Cisco 48 ports between the two switch configured for frames and VLAN native

No idea what this config shoud be to support high availability and multi-pathing (is multi-pathing support in this config?)

    CONFIG HAS

Question - should separate vSwitches two be created on networks separated for failover, or network cards must be involved?

If the network adapters are associated are active, reserve active?

Grouping of NETWORK cards would probably be a better bet, here, with assets.  In fact, you won't see a lot of load balancing between the two network cards, but a little does not hurt.  If you configure your political grouping based on the destination IP address and you have your storage ports are numbered sequentially, you'll have the best of the use cases of these two ports.

    B CONFIG

    ESX 4.1

Using iSCSI multipathing.  Here is a good blog on how better to use with a Clariion system.  FLARE 30 should be out soon and take care of this limitation, so you can use iSCSI multipathing as described in the Guide of Config of iSCSI SAN.

  • VCenter hosts can be allowed and not allowed at will?

    Hi all

I'm about to test vCenter which will have 2 Guest ESXi connection to an equallogic SAN for storage. Currently, they are all running ESXi 4 Free edition, but I have 3 host license. I need to use one to do some tests of e/s in different conditions (number of network cards, etc.). ESXi free edition appears to be limited in what he can do (for example, you cannot configure jumbo frames) compared to what can be a licensed version.  I have only 1 host printers ESXi to use for this, but at the end of the tests, it must be formatted and used for another project.

Thus, it is possible to use one of the licenses 3 host for this test host, to allow access to some features of ESX during the tests... and at the end of the tests remove this license, reformat the host and can be reused on a production host (once you get bought in the future)?

Yes, this shouldn't be a problem.  But in the end when go you to the free license you can not manage their in vCenter under a free license, as you know, does not come with a vCenter agent license.
