iSCSI storage problem ESXi 5 u1

Hello

We have six ESXi 5 u1 servers connected to the storage unit Dell EqualLogic 65xx series. On ESXi systems we use the iSCSI Software and PSP is set to RoundRobin. We investigated a question where randomly throughout the day that we receive the following warning:

VCenter:

Failed to write command to write-suspended partition naa.6090a08890b27eeab8cee499fb01a0f6:1

VMKernel:

WARNING: ScsiDeviceIO: 3075: order of writing-suspended bulkhead 6090a08890b27eeab8cee499fb01a0f6:1 write failure

Capability3: 13359: Max (10) attempts exceeded for appellant Fil3_FileIO (status "IO has been abandoned by VMFS via virt-reset of the unit")

BC: 1858: cannot write (couriers) object '. iormstats.SF': level core exceeded Maximum attempts

Also, we see a lot of messages indicating a loss of connectivity, iSCSI volumes:

Lost access to the volume (LUN_NAME) 4f58ac5f-ef525322-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX because of connectivity issues. Recovery attempt is underway and the result will be
reported in no time.

This event is generated by all six guests at random time intervals and LUN iSCSI target different. At the same time, we notice a very high spike in CPU usage of 100% on the host that generates the message

One thing we found through tests of vmkping is that ESXi hosts are configured for extended frames (9000 MTU vmk, vswitch and adapters), but the storage network, does not allow frames.

This could be an indication of serious IP fragmentation on iSCSI? How we measure this?

Do you know if the side SAN is configured for frames? If not, then it should probably not be a problem, given that the TCP connection will take care of the other so-called MSS sizes and your guests should get off by default the images of sizes.

The worst situation would be if both the ESXi and the SAN supports jumbo frames, but not the switches between the two. Because the switches are 'invisible' problems don't happen, until you actually start sending larger images and those will arrive in silence by switches, i.e. no IP fragmentation.

Have you also checked with vmkping what kind of end-to-end connectivity, you have? Options-d and s are very important get right: http://rickardnobel.se/archives/992

  • iSCSI network problem

I have simply attach an iscsi storage to ESXI and then allocate space on the storage to a virtual machine. In the virtual machine I copy a large file (about 4G) to this disc, in the process, it's always happened that adaptation procedure does not.

I tried iStorage server and Starwind. iStorage server is a little better than Starwind in performance.

Without details about your configuration, it is difficult to say what the problem is. Please provide as much detail as possible about your test environment, the versions that you are using and the configuration of the network (especially the iSCSI configuration).

Best bet is usually to use the vendor's documentation best practices. On the site of Starwind you find these resources, Kernsafe site is not easy to find documentation and what I've found, it's a little outdated (configurations for ESX 4.0), but maybe I missed something. However, given that you work for Kernsafe I am sure that you have access to the documentation.

  • Debian Wheezy 7 - iSCSI / LIO problem with ESXi 5.0

    Hi all

I had a Debian Wheezy on a HP ML310e server. This server should be used as an iSCSI - storage server.

Unfortunately I am not able to connect my 5.0 with LIO iSCSI target ESX servers.

I used the implementation of LIO (targetcli) for iSCSI and I used the official installation manual Linux target SCSI - ISCSI.

I know that the discovery of the Portal works, because when I enter the IP Address of storage in the dynamic discovery, the two portals of storage can be found. BUT any new features.

I disabled the CHAP authentication, because I thought that it might have to do with it, but still no go.

My Windows 2003 R2 64 bit backup server can connect without a problem.

I have a feeling it's something small, but unfortunately I can't find any debugging or a newspaper for the login process.

    Hi all

    Sorry for the late reply.

    I found a problem with MTU 9000.

One of the switches does not 9000 MTU packet transport.

After changing the MTU to 1500, everything works like a charm.

  • Problem when adding 2nd host in Iscsi storage shared

    Hello people.

I'll try to explain exactly my problem even if it is a little difficult liitle!

First of all, we are talking about a test environment that is installed in my house just for learning purposes.

I am facing a strange my iscsi storage behavior when trying to join a second host to storage vmotion purposes. I was using an Esx host (3.5) for a while and I had no problem with the iscsi storage (I use an old pc with freenas on it). I must say that I got lucky, also, local sata controllers have been recognized so I could test the Storage Vmotion between two storages (Commons and iscsi) with success in this host.

To continue to learn, I decided to also buy another pc to test Ha cluster, Vmotion, DRS. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the same material and who as well as sata controllers do not to be recognized, so I used a disk ata for OS and my intention was to use for the volume vmfs3 iscsi storage.

In the first host esx I used, you can see 3 storage adapters: vmhba32 vmhba33& gt; Controllers local sata,34vmhba& gt; initiator iscsi software

In the second esx host, you can see only the vmhba32- & gt; the iSCSI Software initiator.

The first time everything worked ok, which means that I have attached iscsi storage in host the2nd by rescaning the vmhba and I was able to browse the datstore and see the contents of it, but it lasted only 10 minutes. Then suddenly I lost the connection to common storage to both hosts, I could see in the section maps of storage, but when I pressed update in the storage section, nothing happened and even when I tried to add it using the add storage I received the message usual "cannot read the partition table information. After being a little more careful I noticed that in the section storage cards, I could see the same vmhba34 in the two hosts with the same alias to the host of the first, and here's the strangest part, the situation I described above has been changing from time to time, which means that a few times I have seen the vmhba32 in both hosts and after some time vmhba34 in both hosts! (crazy)

I took the big decision after playing with the partition table, without effect to use the ' vmkfstool - C vmfs3 s ' _free "_ / vmfs/devices/disks/vmhba32: 0:0:1" command

in the second host, of course, I lost all data, but now with a simple refresh in this host, I was able to see the storage.

    Unfortunately, I still couldn't ' 1 host storage access and I published the same command "vmkfstool - C vmfs3 s"free"" / vmfs/devices/disks/vmhba34: 0:0:1 ""

with only the change you see in bold. Accordingly, it was to see the storage after a refresh with free (1) name.

Now he is currently working for 2 days with this way not recommended and what I would be really grateful if could help me clarify what exactly is happening.

My main problem is that I am in front of a very unstable environment that might as well have the same unexpected problem in the future and I can't reformat always storage and loss of all virtual machines

I tried to describe the best I could to this strange situation!

Thank you for your time and any help or advice would be most welcome!

I was looking for a similar solution. Seems to be the only iSCSI host is possible on freeNas. See here: http://apps.sourceforge.net/phpbb/freenas/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=403&sid=f4881e6e25e752e6ee8c6b0eae5887d3

The only solution for learning seems to be to install the server ESX or ESXi in a virtual machine and then use iSCSI. Vm Instructions to complete the installation here (you must all PDFs 6) http://knowledge.xtravirt.com/white-papers/esx-3x.html or you can replace the opnefiler by the SUN's VM iSCSI. http://www.sun.com/storage/disk_systems/unified_storage/resources.jsp , you must use the vmware converter to convert the SUN's virtual to be used in ESX machine found this in a forum... but can not find more URL. I have not tried myself but, looking for just because you want to get a similar setup.

  • Migration of ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4 (ISCSI storage)

    Hey everybody!

I want to migrate to ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4. But there is a question that I can't answer by myself.

I use ISCSI storage, what is put in shape with "VMFS 3.31".

Is it Possible to use this storage simultaneous ISCSI of the two systems, also an ESXI 3.5 and a 4 Hostsystem ESXI?

Does anyone have experience in this context?

Greeting of the Germany and thank you,.

    Kay

Welcome to the forums - Yes you can - the migration of high level plan is updated vceneter (it can manage ESX 4 hosts both ESX 3.5)-> upgrade ESX hosts (they can coexist in the same groups and data centers)-> then upgrade the virtual hardware to virtual machines and VMware tools.

  • Creation of the NSX for IP (iSCSI) storage

    Hi all

I considered just the implications of VMware NSX on storage over IP (iSCSI) Design.

If we create three groups: Edge, Mgmt and Compute, each in its own grid:

    • Each cluster/rack is associated with (2) sheet of 10 GB switches
    • There are 2 two 10 GB backbone switches for the installation
    • Each sheet is connected to each switch of the spine (sheet ports 47 to the spinal #1 switch) and leaves 48 to the #2 of the spine switch
    • 10Gb iSCSI without are configured in the cluster of MGMT/rack and connected to the 10 GB sheet past in the cluster/rack of Mgmt.

Then, how facilitate us the IP storage for ESXi hosts who are not in the same basket as the SAN?

Suppose we define VLAN 99 for IP storage (by Figure 4 - NSX v2.1 Design Guide) and follow the recommendations 'trunking VLAN on the link between the sheet and the spine is not allowed' (p. 65 - NSX v2.1 Design Guide), then the inescapable conclusion is that the SAN are not available since the Compute cluster/rack or edge.

How to set an exception that will allow us to the trunk VLAN 99 (no gateway, without calculation, not able rout) of the spine, so IP storage is accessible from all ESXi hosts?

    THX in ADV!

Here, you will need to use the IP routing for communication inter rack configured at the ESXi host level.

For example on the grid 1 VMKernel Interface for storage is 10.77.1.10 in Vlan 77.

switch sheet of TOR, we terminate that VLAN as IVR with IP address of 10.77.1.1

To Inter Communication IP Rack storage, let's add command to host ESXi on racks 1 hosts next-level:

    esxcli ip network route ipv4 add - n 10.77.0.0/16 g 10.77.1.1

(Note VMkernel Interface for different media guests will be in different subnets. So in rack 2 VMKernel Interface for storage will be 10.77.2.10)

  • Best way to disconnect the iSCSI storage

    Hello

I have a server cluster, connected to the Equallogic iSCSI storage. I want to delete and re-create a volume storage, but in a fairly safe way.
Ideally, I would be able to take the volume out of action for a few days, but there are avaiable to reconnect if necessary. Normally, I would do this to simply put the volume offline. It can then be seen by the hosts, but I put it online as appropriate.
East - meaning the best, though? It does not seem to cause some problems that are to do with map software iSCSI being unable to find the device, until a new analysis/reset of the host is according to me.
Can anyone suggest a better way to do this?

    Hello.

The procedure is described in http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015084

    Good luck!

  • Deliver the addition of iSCSI storage visible via vSphere (direct host or vCenter)

    Hi all

I'm having a strange problem when I try and add a second drive to my host ESX 4.1. The storage is visible, but when I go to add it via the add storage wizard I get the following error message:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryVmfsDatastoreCreateOptions" of object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESX '172.16.10.221' failed.

    As shown below:

The error is the same weather, I try to add via vSphere connected to vCenter or ESX 4.1 host directly.

The funny thing is that I have a small iSCSI target on the same iSCSI storage that works very well.

    Here is my config network:

And here is my config to storage adapter:

I have also attached my vmkiscsid.log of the esx host file.

I think what's happeneing, is that the ESX host tries to enter and format the storage via the console port of service instead of the iSCSI port I created but I could be wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you.

    Pell Manny.

Size of the disk (including the iSCSI LUN) is still limited to 2 TB minues 512 b... Try to drop the size of the iSCSI LUN down that maximum and try again... I would bet that the 'small' target that you have not had any problems with less than this limit is...

  • Can't see iscsi storage

I have set up a virtual machine with two vmxnet eth adpt 3. a tip to the network and the other to point to my storage.  Having a problem to see my iscsi storage. I see only an address in the ip observed range and sound of my Vcenter server that has an ip of my config suggestions SAN management.

You must create a portgroup VM for iSCSI network on the vSwitch where physical right iSCSI network is connected.

Use the same network address, then try to do some testing with ping (for example).

  • Connection iSCSI SAN to ESXi servers

    Hi all

I am trying to work through the iSCSI SAN Config Guide and get our three ESXi servers connected to our iSCSI SAN, but I'm confused about a few points.

Background - Our production network is 172.16.10.x, our management network is 172.16.64.x and the SAN is on the 10.1.1.x network.

The Guide says that the service console and VMkernel need to access the iSCSI storage - but in ESXi, there is no service console. Our network administrator (who has used 2 ESX) said just put in place two vSwitches and configuring each of them to VMkernel access, one on network 10 and the other on the management network. Every time I try this, I lose connectivity to the management console. It seems VMkernel wants a default gateway set and when I put it for 172.16.64.1, the SAN does not connect, but when I put it to 10.1.1.1, vCenter loses the connection. Our network administrator says he won't let the 172.16.64.x network traffice to the 10.1.1.x network, but I think that we have to set up in this way.

Is there something I'm missing. There actually seems to be three issues. (1) when the Guide says of console, VMkernel and service is possible to distinguish between the two in ESXi? (2) if we set VMkernel network 172.16.64.x, can we create a second VMkernel on the 10.1.1.x network? and (3) should just bite the bullet and set up routing between the VMkernel and the San?

Thank you. I know it was long and complicated, but that reflects my confusion! Any help would be appreciated.

The answer to the first question is no, there is no distinction between console and vmkernel port in ESXi, like network service management of walks on the portgroup vmkernel.

You should be able to create a vmkernel 2nd interface, and you do not change the default gateway.  As you have noticed, you can have a default gateway, that is why the default part.  That alone, and you should have two exchanges vmkernel, one on the network management and the other on the storage network.  The vmkernel being on the same segment as the storage, traffic goes out through it and not the default gateway, so no routing must take place.

Hello, I have storage problems with my iPhone 6. I have the 16 GB model and it seems to be showing me that I used more storage than I actually have. However when I add up the use of the storage for each application he ads only up to about 2.5 GB. In addition, on iTunes on my MacBook, it shows that I have 6.65 GB free. I tired delete apps and optimize Photos stroage and elimination of most local music from the phone. It was me that more sotrage space however when I checked later return that he had exhausted more storage without having downloaded me all the apps, photos, or music.

iTunes and iOS do not display the use of storage the same way. The best way to ensure that the iPhone is deleted unnecessary files, including video streaming, old app data, etc., is to perform a restore. Make sure that the backup you make in iTunes is encrypted, so all of your critical data is kept. Import all your photos, music, too.
