Configuration of TCP Intercept

We currently have a set of routers Cisco 2900 (2911, I think) who manages our primary traffic. We have suffered some attacks, but have worked to get a resolution on the side of the UDP. We are also currently looking into an alternative IPS that should give us greater protection against the UDP and TCP protocols based attacks. In the meantime, I am considering options that would limit our vulnerability to TCP based attacks - TCP Intercept is one of these options.

From what I've read so far, I should be able to configure this on my 2900's. My question is: is there a risk associated with this configuration on these routers because they used for a primary connection in one of our data centers? In the past, we have experienced attacks > 10 GB against this tunnel of 1 GB. I suppose that if we are struck with anything that significant TCP interception probably will not help as much as the CPU of the router is likely to ankle (unless I'm wrong about this)? Again, this only would be an option in the short term so that the establishment of a better solution.

If you get hit with 10 GB/s of traffic and you have a 1 GB/s pipe anything you can do on your end will make a difference.  You would need help on the side of the service provider of the pipeline to solve.

I don't believe that a 2911 enough CPU punch to treat intercepts TCP 1 Gb/s - or even get a little close.  So yes, I think that the CPU will be well and truly peg.

So in short, I agree with all of your thoughts.

I would seek a beam power of fire Cisco ASA 5516, with some licenses of firepower.  In fact, maybe you should just jump on firepower 5555 beam to have a lot of spare horses to deal with these attacks.  The 5516 would be indexed, if he broke with that much traffic attack.

    The 'alternative' configuration settings tab, if you select "IP address private auto" (APIPA) or "specified user" is only used IF "obtain an IP address automatically" is set on the tab 'General' (http://tinyurl.com/8p9hn) AND the adapter cannot get an IP from a DHCP server.

    Most cable networks use a DHCP server to automatically assign IP addresses.  In this case, just plug your Ethernet cable and you're automatically configured and connected.

    If the problem is that your network requires a static IP address (that is, they use a DHCP server to automatically assign IP addresses), you will need a third-party network settings manager.  If you have an IBM (Lenovo) ThinkPad, you can use "Dial-up connections."     According to the doc, when TCP intercept's intercept mode "software continues to intercept and transmit packets for the duration of the connection."

    Is this really the case? I expect the software to out the company of proxy when connections (client-side and server-side) are put in place and "knitting".

    If you think about it, it is impossible for the router to leave the connection:

    When running in mode "intercept" the following occurs:

    (1) client sends SYN to the server

    (2) this is intercepted by the router and the router answers as if it were the server with a SYN/ACK

    (3) the Client sends an acknowledgement of receipt to the router (and most often grafted on a real demand).

    Now, what happened is that the router has not yet opened a session on the server, because he was waiting to check the clients session was for real (it takes three steps of the latter). It also means that the router doesn't have a clue about all the settings/options that the server would try to negotiate...

    All of these packages also comes with a TCP sequence number that the client/server (router) uses to follow the path she traveled in the session.

    The router now opens the session to the server with the same sequence of events (SYN, SYN/ACK-ACK) but this time serving the customer.

    What you have is two TCP sessions that has its own set of sequence numbers. The TCP intercept feature will now packets from the client are set to the server with the options and sequence numbers correct it is safe. (so-called transparent knitting)... :)

  • TCP Intercept feature

    If I understand the documentation, I need an embryonic limit on my static commands to enable syn attack, it blocks my pix. However, I am not clear on what constitutes a reasonable limit embryonic. We have several servers open to various ports including www, ftp, smtp, and some oracle application ports. Most is light use, nothing real heavy.

    Any suggestions on what I should be affecting my embryonic connection limits?

    Also, do I need to set a maximum limit of connections as well?

    Well, the answer to your question is "it depends." Each server operating system has an embryonic connection limit built in. In other words, the amount of embryonic connections max that can manage the operating system itself. We recommend generally, limit the embryo on the PIX for a number which is a little lower than what the operating system can handle as the idea is to protect the server behind the PIX against a DOS attack. For example, most Windows boxes have a limit of 128. In such cases, setting the connection limit embryonic on the PIX of 120 or 115 would be sufficient. Maximum number of connections do not need to be defined jointly with the econn parameter, but you can set certainly as well if you wish. Again, this number should be set according to the number max of & that your server can handle. I hope this helps.

    The static route that you configured for Internet access needs to be corrected:

    route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.48 1

    The next hop address must be the IP address of your ISP gateway and not the ASA outside IP of the interface. Currently, both are set to 192.168.1.48.

  • ASA 5505 Split Tunneling configured but still all traffic Tunneling

    I installed an ASA 5505 running 8.3.2 and Cisco AnyConnect Client 2.5.2017.

    There are the DefaultRAGroup and a newly configured Group called SplitTunnelNets.

    I have 1 internal subnet (192.168.223.0/24) which has a matching ACL/AS configured on the DefaultRAGroup and the custom group policy called SSLClientPolicy.

    When I start the VPN with the ASA, I can indeed reach internal resources, but when I look at the routing table, I see a new default gateway route 0.0.0.0 / 0-> 192.168.25.2 (that is in the IP pool) with a metric of 2.  The default route before the start of the session AnyConnect now has a higher metric, so the 192.168.25.2 next hop is a priority.

    I don't see the routes in the routing table for 192.168.223.0/24 as I expect to see.  In the diagnosis of AnyConnect, I see that 0.0.0.0/0 is the policy applied to the client.

    Here's my setup.  Please tell me if you see something that I'm missing.

    The split tunnel access list must be standard access-list, not extended access list.

    You must change the following:
    FROM: SplitTunnelNets access-list extended ip to allow all 192.168.223.0 255.255.255.0
    To: SplitTunnelNets standard access list allows 192.168.223.0 255.255.255.0

    You should be able to reconnect again and will be able to access the Internet after you set up the standard access-list split tunnel.

  • Another problem with the configuration of Cisco VPN Client access VPN Site2site

    We have a Cisco ASA 5505 at our CORP. branch I configured the VPN Site2Site to our COLO with a Juniper SRX220h, to another site works well, but when users access the home Cisco VPN client, they cannot ping or SSH through the Site2Site.  JTACS contacted and they said it is not on their end, so I tried to contact Cisco TAC, no support.  So here I am today, after for the 3 days (including Friday of last week) of searching the Internet for more than 6 hours per day and try different examples of other users. NO LUCK. The VPN client shows the route secure 10.1.0.0

    Sorry to post this, but I'm frustrated and boss breathing down my neck to complete it.

    If possible, I'd like to see that a TCP connection attempt (e.g. http://www.google.com) in the ASDM logging of the VPN Client when you set up the dynamic NAT for the VPN Pool also.

    I'll try also the command "packet - trace" on the SAA, while the VPN Client is connected to the ASA.

    I'm trying to configure Anyconnect for the 1st time through the graphical interface, even if I'm comfortable with the command line if necessary.  I am familiar with IOS and PIX before 8.3 so this is my 1st time with newer versions.     I am setting up this asa for connect users at home to my network using vpn clients from microsoft to the native address with windows xp on the internet.

    This asa have, on the outside interface an ip public Internet and inside Board have set up in the network of 192.168.0.x and I want to access this network of internet users using native vpn clients.

    I tested with a pc connected directly to the external interface and works well, but when I connect this interface to the internet and tried to connect to the vpn user I can see it in the newspapers and unable to connect with error 800.

  • Help please - configuration VPN AnyConnect crossed

    Hi there, forgive me if I missed all the protocols forum because this is my first post.

    I am trying to configure an AnyConnect VPN and I think it's nearly there, but not enough yet. When I connect from an outside network, it gives me the following error '... No address is available for an SVC connection. I checked the pools of addresses and what I see, they are assigned to the profile. I'm doing it also crossed, I all VPN traffic through this router... traffic LAN and remote Internet sometimes when I'm on the unfamiliar wifi hotspots. I tried to get this to work for more than 1 week with a lot of different forums to scouring. I have included my config running for anyone to help me with. I appreciate a lot of the answers to get me on the right track. Thank you.

    Update 15 minutes later: I posted my SSLVPN IP pool to the DefaultWebVPNGroup and it connected but I was unable to browse the web or ping network resources. I would like to disable the "DefaultWebVPNGroup" without any consequences for the installation program. What I still have to disable?

I configured the tcp/ip connection and test it with the vision builder ethernet Terminal, this part works fine, but I can´t do this with Labview where I show images of smart cameras via shared variables.

    I tried to contact LeCroy Waverunner 64Xi via ethernet. I read the other posts on how to set up the connection and I thin it is not working properly as it responds well when tested through the Measurement & Automation Explorer.

    The name of source VISA looks like this.

    The question that is on all Labview codes, if I get an error:
    "Error 85 has occurred to the channel Scan (arg 1) in lcwave wait to purchase Complete.vi-> lcwave single Waveform.vi of reading.
