Configuration Windows to compress files or folders

According to windows help, to compress a file or folder, I just need to make a right click on it and point to sent to and it will come with an option to compress the file or folder.  When I point to Envoy, I do not get an option to compress.  How can I fix it?

  • Unable to find files and folders using Windows Search

Original title: Windows search returns no results, but only for a single user - another user works very well - Windows 7

All of a sudden windows search of files and folders (from windows Explorer) do not return results - even if I'm looking for in a folder with a file name that I know is in there.  However, it works for the other user on this system.

The things that I tried or looked at who did not work:

    • Configuration of the default folder options.
    • reconstruction of the index
    • sfc/scannow - said "windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to solve some of them.  I have the CBS. If necessary log file.
    • research done that windows has been archived 'Tour of the windows features turn on or off.
    • Ran the registry of Windows Search - he said that he fixed two things (cannot tell you what they were now), but still, it does not solve the problem. When I run it says once again that there are no errors.
    • I checked this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced\\\ and key Start_SearchFiles - which was set to 2, the default
    • Under Customize Start Menu - search with public folders is selected under search for other files and libraries.

It still does not work.  The search box in the start menu seems to work, but not for anything I get.

    Frustrated!

  • To access the files and folders from the hard drive Windows 7 on Windows XP, access denied error message.

Original title: portable destroyed - need for car access

I don't know if this is the right forum - please advice if it is not.

My friend's laptop computer was destroyed in a car accident. I pulled the drive and placed it in my desktop XP system and the drive appear in good health. However, I received permission issues trying to access records on the disk and thought that it was because of me using Win XP and the laptop was Win7x64. My questions below are based on the assumption that I'm not able to access these files on my Win XP system. If this assumption is incorrect, so please let me know.

I have a laptop that I don't use and put the disk in it. I was hoping it would be plug and play all the new material, but after reading a little online, I know that this is not the best thing to do and will probably not work as did the earlier versions of Windows.

In the end, I care retrieves the contents of the disc, although it would be great if I could lend my laptop for a few weeks with "its files" until it sorts how to replace the laptop.

Can I get the player Win7x64 working on the laptop computer of replacement by reinstalling Win7x64 on this laptop? I'm not "means a clean install/reformat, but have rather the Setup program detects an existing installation, and do its magic to get the operating system runs on new hardware?"

I know that this raises questions of MS licenses. If the installation process could get his old system running on the laptop replacement, if I have a small window of time completely to access his files before being forced to re-register the OS? I'm hoping so.

I'm looking for only a short-term solution - I do not recommend that he hopes that drive long term because the laptop got quite truncated of the accident, and once he gets a new laptop it will have everything he needs on this subject (OS, licenses, etc.). If I have a small window of time where I can simply copy their important files, or to lend him my laptop with its player and him can bring to its domestic network and the print out of all the things that are important, that it's going to be all together to move them to a new laptop when it is available.

    Thank you

    Hello

You experience this problem because of the permissions applied to these s folder.  To resolve this problem, you will need to take ownership of these files and folders.

Method 1: You can follow the steps mentioned in the link below to take possession of the records

Troubleshoot "access denied" when opening files or folders

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/troubleshoot-access-denied-when-opening-files-or-folders

(Article above applies to Windows Vista, not valid for Windows XP)

Also check out the article below

How to capture a file or a folder in Windows XP
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308421

Method 2:  You can try a custom installation (not a format\clean facility).

See the link below for custom installation
using the install option custom without formatting the hard drive

Note: In custom installation only data would be transferred in Windows. Drivers, applications and the old folder will need to be reinstalled.

  • Certain files and folders are not detected by Windows Explorer (XP).

I created 15 files in a folder on a shared network drive, associated with another computer. My computer is running XP x 64 v. 2003 SP2, and the computer server (the one with the shared drive) has v.2002 XP Pro (32-bit) SP3.  When I open the folder in Windows Explorer I see only 12 folders. When I tried to rename one of the 12 visible files to match the name of one of the 3 missing files I get an error (file exists!). What is all too weird, when I select all and delete 12 deleted records and previously missing 3 appears.

Has also had a similar problem with entire folders. The Explorer does not see the folder but when I create a shortcut by typing the path of the folder manually and click on the shortcut, the name of the file appears in Solution Explorer!

All files and folders are visible when I connect on the 32-bit computer. There is no difference between the files/folders regarding the permissions or security settings are concerned. Other users have experienced the similar problem. I tested this on 2 other computers on the same network. On a 32-bit computer, everything works fine, but on another 64-bit computer, I get the same question of file disappears.  It seems to suggest some incompatibility between Windows XP 32-bit and 64-bit XP systems.  Any suggestions how to fix it? It's really frustruting...

I have a wireless home network. When I got Windows 7 Home premium 32-bit on my desk - my XP laptop was able to share files and folders.

Today, I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Now - my Windows 7 Desktop can access files on my XP laptop - BUT - I was no longer able to access to any shared files and folders on the Windows 7 desktop. I checked that matches the name of working group. And on the XP - when I go to the Add Assistant preferred network and make a Browse. When I select Microsoft Windows network and task force - I see my office listed. But when I try to select - the OK button remains grayed out.
I would appreciate your help on this.

Thanks for your help - but I just found out the problem. In the advanced sharing settings, I forgot to select Enable turn off password protected sharing. The second I chose no-all the files and folders that I set to share on the Windows 7 system became available.

  • In Windows 7, signed as an administrator but get access denied to certain files and folders

I just started my new computer, set up my user profile and installed Quicken. He would not open the Ouicken backup file I had brought my old computer so I started looking for a solution and found that a number of files and folders have been marked read-only. Then, I started to change the file attributes to allow free access everywhere where I found them marked read-only. In some cases, there was an error message saying that the file could not be changed, so I ignored these files. In fact, my question is, why am I like the only user of this computer, being denied access to any file or folder? I gave myself (duh) administrator-level privileges, but Windows 7 does not recognize me as an administrator. Is there something that I missed when you set up Windows for the first time? Just a mess by changing the file attributes? Thank you.

In fact, my question is, why am I like the only user of this computer, being denied access to any file or folder? attributes? Thank you.

There are at least two issues here. First, Windows 7 uses a structure of different folders for pre-Vista versions and while there are files and folders whose names are the same as those used in XP, they are NOT records in the true sense of the word - they are JUNCTION points to which any user has not access - there is no point. Documents and Settings is one of these junction points - this is to allow existing applications that use the old pre to win 7 folder structure to run in Windows 7. See here for more information about junction points:

    http://www.Svrops.com/Svrops/articles/jpoints.htm

Secondly, I think you will see that the records that you have thought we have read-are not only in fact. A folder with the read-only BLUE box is NOT dead, and it's the standard attribute for folders in Windows 7. A read-only file or folder has a CHECKMARK in the read-only box, not a blued outlet box.

  • Workgroup Windows 7 - can see the folders, but not files in the shared directory

I have three windows on the same workgroup machines (2 machines Windows 7 [A, B] and [C] XP machine). I have a shared folder on the [A], with many subfolders. When I created first the part, [B] has been able to see all files and folders in the shared directory on [A]. Next, I added several subfolders on [A]. Now, [B] can see new subfolders but not the files in the breast. Why is that happening and how can I solve this problem?

[A] and [B] are capable of full access to the shared folders on [C]. The permissions on the shared folder on [A] are set to "Everyone" + read/write. I tried several reboots of each machine. Hit "Refresh" on [B] does not make the files appear. It is not password-protected. It turns out that [C] has exactly the same problem as [B], that makes me think there is something to do with the share on [A], but I can't understand it.

    On [A].

Under sharing advanced > caching, I chose only "the files and programs that specify users are available in offline mode."

Under [advanced sharing] > permissions, "Everyone" is given full control, change, and read them.

Under [advanced sharing] > permissions > Add > locations, machine [A] is visible, but are not machines [B, C].

    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Thanks for the reply and keeping the status updated.

There are options of shares with different depending on whether your PC is connected to a network and what type of network is.

To share the points with a particular person, choose the account of this person.

To share with all members of your home group, choose one of the options Group of the House .

To select libraries to share with all the members of your home group, swept from the right edge of the screen, tap settingsand then tap Change PC settings. (If you use a mouse, point to the upper right of the screen, move the pointer of the mouse down, click settingsand then click change PC settings). And then tap or click home group.

To prevent a file or a folder shared with anyone, press or click the share tab and then press or click stop sharing.

To change the level of access to a file or folder, press or click on the sharing tab, and then select Home group (view) or collective (view and edit) home.

If you need to share a location such as a disk or system file, use the Advanced sharing option.

Change the settings for network, file sharing discovery, sharing public folders, sharing protected by password, home group of connections and file sharing connections.

To turn on network discovery, file and sharing printers, and public folder sharing in Windows 7

Control Panel > network and sharing Center > change advanced sharing settings > public folder sharing.

-Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files.
