Consolidate files vmdk (lack of snapshots)

I made the mistake of trying to free up space by deleting all snapshots, and then decide the ESX Server was insensitive and rebooted. I got the chance to still have virtual machines of work later. I now 17 files vmdk disk of the virtual machine, but given that the snapshots have been deleted, I can't delete just them. Is there an easy way to consolidate in the vmdk to parent?

Hello

To consolidate all snapshots, you need to make sure that all the file descriptor and the discs are in the same directory, I would advice if you can make a copy of the entire folder first if you have enough space. Now for consolidation, you need to make sure that the first you cross all the descriptor files and make sure you have the correct mapping of PID and CID. PID: Disk Parent, CID: the child disk.

Lets say you start from the base.vmdk, it will not all PID as the parent root it will be 00001.vmdk CID, of same will PID as the basis and CID 00002.vmdk 00001.vmdk you must ensure that this channel is maintained by the last disk.

Once this is done then you can run vmkfstools-i on the latest snapshot of disk and create a new destination disk that will be the new combined disk that will have all of the snapshots are committed on the basic disk.

Out of curiosity. Are two snapshots created even when you create the snapshot manually?

With backup applications, this behavior is not uncommon. The first snapshot is created for the virtual machine write them changed data, while the current is/instant backup, and the second snapshot is created by the backup software to attach the virtual disk basic to the host/proxy backup as "independent - not persistent. Once the virtual disk is disconnected from the proxy the second snapshot will be discarded and then the first snapshot will be validated for the basic disk.

CBT information should not be reset somehow, but updated as changed during the backup data.

  • Too many files VMDK

    Hi all

I have a server with a strange problem that I need help with.  This is a security camera server that keeps locked up due to a hard drive problem.  We have a data reader assigned as drive F, and from time to time, it goes to a point that the server crashes.  When troubleshooting, I found that the drive F is not available.  The quick fix is for me to just delete this player and add another.  Problem now is that there is a flat file and 4 or trust of the delta files on a drive that is no longer there. I put the new disk in another data store. There is also a file VMDK has a curious name... camera - ctk.vmdk.  There is no hard drive with this name.   They are eliminated without any problem or is there a specific way to go about getting rid of them?

If the flat file and delta is no longer needed, you can certainly delete. However, if you are not 100% sure, it might be a good idea to move the files to a temporary/new directory to see if everything continues to work as expected and then - remove them at a later date. The -ctk.vmdk file is the file that is used for the modified block (CBT), follow-up. One of these files exist for each virtual disk where CBT is activated. You can remove this file if the associated virtual disk no longer exists.

  • Error running VDR: Trouble reading files, error-3942 (delete Snapshot failed)

    Hello

I currently have a problem with my VDR backups. as indicated in the title, the error I get is "error running VDR: Trouble reading files, error-3942 (delete Snapshot failed)".

    Background

We are currently running VMware Vsphere version 4.0.0 on VDR version 1.1.0.707. We have a task of backup running in Vsphere that takes a snapshot of every night of the VM. It is then wrapped on tape for the archive.

    Question

All of the virtual machine is backup successfully except one. I get the error message is as above: "error running VDR: Trouble reading files, error-3942 (delete Snapshot failed)".

The backup task completed successfully, and the virtual machine can be restored from a backup. However, the virtual machine always has a snapshot and in addition, the virtual disk to the virtual machine is still attached to the host.

The current will of this issue that we use is:

    (1) stop the VDR Server

    (2) remove the attached hard disk

    (3) to take a snapshot of the virtual machine

    (4) delete all snapshots.

I would like to find a solution to the underlying cause, as the current will is tedious and time consuming.

Another note, the logic unit number that the virtual machine is currently has a block size of 2 MB while all other virtual machines have a block size of 1 MB...

If you need any additional info, feel free to ask.

    See you soon,.

  • Recover a file VMDK Snapshoted / consolidate a snapshot

    Hello

I have a very big problem and I don't know how to deal with in the right way, I had a few old server that was set up with the weekly snapshots.

and we have some hardware problem with the server that cause some files to capture instant adeleted the data store ccidentally.

We can recover some of the vmdk files.

image attached with files you can find on the server.

We tried a few steps in order to recover the machine (change on vm vmdk configure / create a new snapshot, and delete everything in the Snapshot Manager)-I was able to turn it on with the flat vmdk, but the data is less 6 months ago.

I found a few articles on consolidate an instant snapshot and difficulty of string but I did not really understand how to go about it.

What should I do? Is it possible to merge these files or extract files from them?

    Capture.PNGunnamed.png

Okay, so what I found in the files and file sizes I rebuilt an instant string possible.

    The string is: 5-> 4-> 1->->->-> db1.vmdk 6 2 14

I had to modify two files hard (see attachment). The first fix was on no. 14 that indicated a snapshot does not exist n13. The (next) one parent that makes sense here is no. 2, so I went no. 14, no. 2. The second challenge was to change the parrentCID No. 6 to match the basic disk CID. The reason for this shift is more likely, because you have turned on on the virtual machine with db1. vmdk used as virtual virtual machine disk.

What I recommend you do now, is to replace the two .. the VMDK (12 and 6) files with those that I have attached to this post and then clone the virtual disk from the command line by running vmkfstools-i db1 - 000005.vmdk db1 - clone.vmdk

The next step is to attach the newly created clone as an additional virtual disk with a help of VM, or - if you want to see if the VM is able to start - fix it db1 - clone.vmdk directly on the virtual machine from db1. In the second case, please create a new snapshot before you turn the virtual machine with the cloned virtual disk. In this way that the db1 - clone.vmdk will not be changed.

In no case be prepared there could be corruption in the file system of the client!

  • Question to consolidate 4.1.0_b345043 ESXi Snapshots

    vmware_snapshot_q.png

    Hi all

We had a case of shock with one of our servers and the admin backup takes a snapshot of the system as it was, then restored it to an earlier snapshot (FRONT HAND 6_12_13).

Us have managed since then to correct problems with the server and are satisfied with the way things are as it is. However, before doing what I believe, that's the way, I wanted to make sure:

*) So I hit the button 'Clear all': does that mean it will delete all THE snapshots on the server and flatten the image down to STATE it is RUNNING CURRENT with no snapshots? That's what I would like at this point (as I call it, flattening/solidification/consolidate the image of the server to a master State)

*) Because it is a Production server, I need to program a downtime (as it's a box of ESXi) is there a way to capture off the coast of the snapshot 'before the crash of hard disk"to a vmdk separate from its own, so I can be installed off-site subsequently to make an investigation on my own time? (it is more a wish at this point)

    DRM for all the answers!

I just saw the former post. where same problem has been solved... I hope this will help you.

The consolidation option can be used for instant orphans-

    > At the launch of Delete or DeleteAll snapshots, the details of the snapshot are deleted from the Snapshot Manager, then the snapshot files are consolidated and merged into another snapshot or disk file parent virtual machine. If consolidation fails, there are no snapshots in the Snapshot Manager, but the snapshot files were still used on the data store. This can cause the data store to run out of space.

    > In vSphere 5.0, you are now notified when a virtual machine snapshot consolidation fails. Administrators can now launch a peacebuilding operation from the Client vSphere, rather than through the ESX command line. The vSphere client now displays a warning of Configuration problem in the Summary tab when a machine virtual snapshot consolidation fails.
Note: The ESXi host has been registered on the virtual machine must be a 5.0 ESXi host.

  • Why have I not [VM name] _1.vmdk, _2.vmdk with no snapshots?

    Hello

I'm trying to consolidate my VMs to a small size file, so I can transfer them to a new server. I had a number of snapshots for a long time already. I deleted all the snapshots for virtual machine is flat. Then I looked at the files in the data store for the virtual machine. I see the big following files:

. [The virtual computer name] VMDK

    [VM name] _1.vmdk

    [VM name] _2.vmdk

All three have the same size, and all three are the size of the hard disk of the virtual computer. The virtual machine uses [VM name] _2.vmdk as the player.

Why are there three that seem to be three copies of the file hard drive? Is there a way to merge them so I have only a transfer?

no doubt alone is uptodate - the other two may have been replaced in the history of the virtual machine

use a temporary virtual machine with a Linux LiveCD and inspect what is in the 2 disks not used - then you will know if the disks are in the garbage or valuable

  • Copying files vmdk, checksums do not match

I'm under esxi 4 currently, and I'm going to migrate my vitrual servers into an esxi box 5. I added a stand alone SATA Server esxi 4. I stop the virtual server and copy the files from the old data store (a raid 5 array) on stand alone drive (data store). The virtual server has several readers and I so 4 vmdk files to copy. Initially, I copied the vmdk files using the data store Navigator. Once the copy is complete, I used the md5sum command to verify the integrity of the copy from the original and the checksums do not match. I then attempted to use the CLI and issued the-i vmkfs command to copy the files individually (one at a time). Yet once checksums do not match. The size of the blocks on the two data stores is the same (4 MB), so I'm not sure why my checksums do not match after copying. Is this normal? The server has no snapshots etc.

I used this link for the correct procedure-

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 900

It might be possible that there is bit errors that occur during the copy.  I've seen this happen even with high end RAID controllers usually get fixed with firmware updates.  You can check if there are updates for your controller.

To find out if you have bit errors, try the following:

Make a copy of the chart on the single disc and check the md5 on the single disc.  He notes down.  Make a second copy (probably the same) of the table on the single disc and check the md5 second on the single disc.  If the two s md5 on the match single disc, then there is something in the copy mechanism that is edit the files slightly and causing a different md5 of the original on the table.  If they do not match, then it is likely you have found errors of bit of the controller.

  • RDM vs. big files vmdk

I saw this topic many times during the research on this topic and I did some tests in my environment to see how things are run.  I've seen conflicting information, and some of them may relate to different versions of vSphere, so I thought I would ask again using the observations I have.

I try to implement the virtual file servers and would like to have them with 1 TB of space on their.  I am using vSphere 4 and my back-end storage is a collection of Equallogic iSCSI networks.

    Comments:

    1. the RDM or maximum VMFS datastore that I create is 2047 GB (No 2048 or 2 TB).  I have seen this documented in other threads and it seems to be true.

    2. the block size to put in shape, of the data store VMFS creates high vmdk and RDM file size limit.  1 MB / 2MB, 256GB / 512 GB, 4 MB/1 TB and 8 MB/2 TB.  I've read a few threads that says THAT RDM were not confined to vmdk file size constraints. I found an article that explained that the RDM, even if a pointer or link, is still limited to the top file limit based on the size of block formatting.

    3. If your data warehouses are formatted differently with regard to the size of the blocks, it should / could have some problems when you try to migrate their (hot or cold).  This makes sense because the target data store must be formatted with a block size that accommodates the RDM or vmdk.

    My questions:

    1. What is the impact of using different block sizes?  This is the performance, or is it purely allowing large files?  With a larger block size, I guess he could have lost there more space, but are they practical interest for VMFS or RDM?  Any guestimates about the actual % waste?  Any suggestions on the most convenient to use?  I suppose also that a VMFS partition cannot be changed after formatting the block size?

    2. If the RDM and vmdk are limited to the same maximum size based on the VMFS data store, what is the real difference between them.  I am particularly interested in virtual mode, because I want to use Veeam to save things and I need support for snapshots.

    3. assuming that I can accomplish in objective 1 TB using vmdk or RDM, why should I choose one over the other?  It seems that based on reading, the RDM method can seem like the cleaner solution with regard to the Organization of my SAN, but other messages say you must use vmdk when possible.

Sorry for the long post.  All your comments and discussion would be really useful.

    Thank you.

    Chuck.

    To clarify your comments:

    > 1.  The RDM or maximum VMFS datastore that I create is 2047 GB (2048 no or 2 TB).  I have seen this documented in other threads and it seems to be true.

The maximum size of any SCSI logic unit number ESX4 unique can handle is 2 TB-512 byte (even presented via iSCSI, FC, local no matter).

As a ROW corresponds to a single LUN, he is inherently limited to 2 TB-512 bytes as well. However, a VMFS volume can span multiple LUNS with up to 32 degrees, so you can build a 64 to VMFS volume too. A single file on a VMFS will always be limited to 2 TB maximum depending on the size of block VMFS.

It is also important to mention that NFS data warehouses do not have this limit of 2 TB.

    > 2.  The block size for setting in the form, of the data store VMFS creates high vmdk and RDM file size limit.  1 MB / 2MB, 256GB / 512 GB, 4 MB/1 TB and 8 MB/2 TB.  I've read a few threads that says THAT RDM were not confined to vmdk file size constraints. RDM in virtual compatibility mode are subject to the limitaitons of blocksize VMFS are the same way VMDK files. RDM physical mode are only limited by the limit of unit number logic SCSI explained above, since there is no VMFS on a physical LUN mode. See also http://virtualkenneth.com/2009/11/10/vmfs-and-block-size-is-important-for-virtual-rdms/

    > 3.  If your data warehouses are formatted differently with regard to the size of the blocks, it should / could have some problems when you try to migrate their (hot or cold).  This makes sense because the target data store must be formatted with a block size that accommodates the RDM or vmdk.

There is no problem with VM migration hot or cold between VMFS volumes formatted with different blocksizes, but generally, it takes more time and has a greater impact on performance, VAAI does not work in either block sizes. I advise to use a common block of 8MB on all your VMFS volumes. There is no problem using 8 MB even though your VMS would install all in 1 MB.

    To answer your questions:

    > 1. What is the impact of using different block sizes? This is the performance, or is it purely allowing large files?

There is no this is really purely to allow large files. Small files use small subblocks anyway and you usually don't have a lot of files on a VMFS too, so the unused space is of no interest. You cannot change the block size later. You must delete and re-create the data store. Again, I would just go for 8 MB everywhere.

    Also see this article:

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/vmfs_rdm_perf.PDF

    > 2.  If the RDM and vmdk are limited to the same maximum size based on the VMFS data store, what is the real difference between them.  I am particularly interested in virtual mode, because I want to use Veeam to save things and I need support for snapshots.

It should be more clear with my previous explanations. The differences are also explained more in-depth in the PDF document linked above and can be found in the regular documentation as well.

    > 3.  Assuming that I can accomplish in objective 1 TB using vmdk or RDM, why should I choose one over the other?

You can easily make a 1 TB drive for a virtual machine with the two methods. I'd still go for a VMDK in your case, because it is easier to handle and not really disadvantages on a ROW. Personally, I see no real reason to use a RDM in virtual compatibility mode. Physical compatibility mode can make sense for stuff like inside a guest SAN management software or if you want to share the file system of the LUN between other hosts (physical).

BTW. Another option with iSCSI storage is to use only an iSCSI initiator inside the host on the network virtual, totally independent of the hypervisor, which raises the limit of 2 TB too.

    Also I have recommended reading:

  • Files VMDK ending with a "t".

I have several drives on a virtual machine, but I notice they are almost duplicated in size.

For example, I have a drive thick 150 GB provisioned and is the sixth disk. When I browse the data store, I see:

    VMNAME_5.VMDK 157,284,400 KB

    VMNAME_5 - ctk.vmdk 4 800 KB

    VMNAMEt_5.vmdk 157,284,400 KB

    VMNAMEt_5 - ctk.vmdk 4 800 KB

In addition, the dates on the files with "t" at the end are recent. Those without is very old.

This seems to imply that my 150 GB drive takes really 300 GB of space.

There is no snapshot on the system. It is a system of ESXi 4.0 with all updates.

When you do a clone the existing vmdk will still exist. and when you just to remove the VMDK there are two options one is to remove the link and the other to permanent, delete. I guess that you have chosen the first option. a way is trying to see if it is safe to move is to ensure that the virtual machine is power up and then remove the vmdk directly. If we then use file locking prevent if ongoing deletion.

  • Copy it to a VMDk after a snapshot

    Hi all

My apologies if some has already asked this, I did some research but couldn't find anything obvious. I have 2 x 3.5 esxi servers but both are using local storage. Unfortunately its going to take awhile before I can get a shared storage in place so I was wondering if there was a quick way to take a copy of these machines without turn off the power. Copies will not be turned on, it's just so I have a copy of the virtual machine. No VC so cloning is not available.

If you take a snapshot of a virtual computer you're able to take a copy of the original vmdk and then instant would be engaged after a successful copy?

I was also on the use of vmware converter to make a copy but did not know how she had to leave the original machine?

    Hope it makes sense.

    Thank you all...

Sorry... I didn't see the 'custom' close to power off.

If you want to make a copy of a virtual computer running?

In this case I suggest (to have a true copy) to break (when you can), copy all files exempt vmdk files, take a snap, turn on the virtual machine and then copy only the hard and - flat.vmdk (and not the delta files).

This way, you have a complete copy.

Another solution is to install the converter inside the virtual machine and run a conversion, but in this case you consisten VSS copy of your virtual machine.

  • Files VMDK, simple question...

I just build an image for installation of ACE. The machine came with a set of VMDK files (I think) and now I finished installing the tools I want there seems to be two sets... cl5 - s001.vmdk seems to have been that with... cl5-000001 - s001.vmdk etc.

Is this normal, with WS6.5 I have never seen before. The guy who did the original is a 'snapshot' or something?  Want just a brief explanation as to what I really can they be merged back?

  • About to consolidate files

I have a folder of media GB 736 iTunes on an external hard drive. I want to consolidate all the media files that may be outside of the folder.

After that I have group files, delete all the media which remains outside the iTunes folder?

Consolidating will copy all the files which have entries in the iTunes library in the media folder.  You can remove the files outside the media folder but if you have tracks that are not entered in iTunes, that those who are not copied, and remove them would leave you without a copy.  Make a backup first.  I know I I haven't added to iTunes media files and removing everything outside the media folder leaves me without a copy of those.  If you want to play it safe you can do drag media files out of the folder to the folder automatically add to iTunes. Elements placed here will be moved to support appropriate and added to iTunes folder.  I think that if she already has an entry, it will be moved but no second entry created.

    Hello

I have HDD with ESXi install is not bootable, I would simply copy the VMDK files off these external HARD disk drives. What is the best way to do it? I imagined something like boot system from USB and then copy files to it, but I have no idea what ESXi FS help and what USB boot image I want to use.

    Thank you

Live CD + install Java + install the driver Open VMFS to mount the partition looks for a solution - see comments in above link.
