Corrupted with Persona user profiles

Hi all

I'm currently trying to keep track of intermittent problems with user profiles corrupted when you use management persona on view desktops. That we had hardware problems lately, so virtual machines of the user have been declining while to which they are connected. We had some corrupt profiles happens a lot recently, and I think they are related. While I'm not surprised that user profiles get corrupted if a virtual machine if the host it is running on crashes, I wonder what the expected behavior is supposed to be in the following cases:

(1) Persona VM connected, the user gets reset via the administrator view

(2) host goes down or datastore comes off while the user is connected to the virtual machine with active management of persona.

I have noticed a hidden directory on the share of persona and lock the files called "{08C31585-259A-4341-9982-78E42EAF6106}\computername.0.lck". VMware support engineer told me that the management of the Persona does not create this folder and file. However, when I go to delete it, it tells me that the file is currently open by "VMWare Horizon view Persona Management". I'm guessing that the support engineer was wrong and that's how Persona management maintains the profile to be used by one user at a time.

Can someone explain to me how this is supposed to work? Corruption of the profiles of the is an expected result a VM to a user connected being reset, or is this considered to be a bug? If the lock file is not cleaned properly, what is the expected behavior?

Thank you

Cameron

Hey Cameron,

For the purposes of this explanation, power failure, reset, and crash are the same.

I don't know if you have persistent or floating desktop computers, but it is important because it affects how it works all.  Computers floating desktop create interesting challenges in scenarios of failure of power with respect to the loss of data.  On the persistent desktops of the local profile is on the bureau and if the machine blocks data can be retrieved on the next logon (assuming that the data has been written successfully to the disk until the power went out).  This is not the case with floating desktop computers, unless the user is lucky enough to get reassigned to the same desktop on the next logon, which should not.

That being said, here are some details of how works the replication engine.  Every ten minutes (the default) or whatever you have configured, the changes made during this interval are downloaded to a temporary directory hidden at the root of the roaming profile.  This folder name is a guid that starts with {d2...}.  Once this step is complete, the data is merged in the roaming profile itself.  If something like an accident or a reset occurs before or during loading in the temp directory, the upload is considered invalid and thrown.  Anything else would result in a corrupted profile (i.e. a part delivery would result in a profile that is not in a consistent state to the crash).  Thus, if a user changes a file and only the machine breaks down until all data since the delta is downloaded, the changes would disappear on a floating office scenario.  The replication engine is designed to ensure a crash-consistent state in the roaming profile in all cases where it is possible for us to do that.

Therefore, if the virtual machine to a user connected gets reset or crashes, it is very likely the user may lose data for the reasons I explained above.

If the host goes down, I think that it is a similar scenario as the roar of the VM.  If the accommodation office data store goes down, I think it's still a scenario for the accident.  If the connection to the central profile store is lost during the user session, Persona will hide changes locally and reproduce them once that the connection is restored.  Still, things get complicated if the user disconnects when the CPS is disconnected on a floating desktop or refresh on logoff is enabled.

You're right, '08C31585-259A-4341-9982-78E42EAF6106}\computername.0.lck}' is created by Persona and is how to ensure that only a single session replica for the roaming profile.  I regret that the person has told you that this is not created by Persona.  They were certainly wrong.  Unfortunately, if the bureau lost power as Persona is holder of this lock, sometimes the file server will not receive the signal to release the lock.  Not really a bug Persona as much as it is a catch-22 in the file system.  Imagine you and I were on the phone and I pulled the plug on my end, but you kept hearing my voice.  You can't hang up because I kept talking and didn't say goodbye.  Basically, the file server is not hearing 'goodbye' and the lock is not released.  The file server must release the lock when the Persona service process stops (even if the character is a not explicitly close), but it happens not cleanly in a this kind of situation, so it does not receive the message "Goodbye".  I don't know if cela a bug in Windows, NTFS, etc. it is a design problem that Microsoft cannot work around.

The profile will not work properly again until the lock is cleaned.  For now, the only way that I know currently to clean orphaned files locks is to restart the file server.

So, Yes, we can expect the data loss occurs if the office returns suddenly and that data has not yet been reproduced in some cases.  Sounds like it may be what you are experiencing.  Corruption of the profiles is a term that is often misused.  In your case, I think you see the loss of data due to breakdowns, no corruption of the profiles.  I expect your roaming profile to be in a consistent state of failure, but lack the last series of changes to the user.  What do you see?

I hope this helps to answer your questions.  If this isn't the case, please do not hesitate to ask for more.

Thank you

Erik

  • Possible corruption of the user profile

A strange, short situation, I have a work station that they cannot print files adobe, adobe just when a certain user logs on to this workstation. I took the following measures:

    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the latest print drivers.
    2. Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Acrobat XI
    3. Made sure its permissions from the local user were good (as far as I could tell).
    4. Check the file associations to ensure that the right program was used

Still does not, now, here's the kicker, if I him connect to another workstation, all is well-no problems. Also, if I connect to his work station with my references I can print correctly.

This leads me to think I have a user profile corrupted for her on this workstation, but I never fixed one or these or successor, how I would proceed?

  • lost my win 7 with her user profile has my FF favourites, can I get them back somehow?

Somehow, I lost my user profile in Windows 7 64. He did not come when I try to change user and I can't log off the current user account as it is the only one on the pc now. But, when I go into the users folder in the c drive, I can see my old profile and all its folders and files and programs, but I can't find a way to get you to connect on it. Then... I just took all the files and put them on my new profile... no problems except that now... when I clicked on FF to see if the pc to connect to the internet, it was as if I had just downloaded for the first time and all my bookmarks disappeared. Could all be still hidden somewhere on my PC? as in the programs on the c drive folder? or are they just disappeared, erased somehow? I don't remember what I did but I was in safe mode, and I think I clicked on create a group or a working group and the pc look like it was downloading something. now my old profile is locked up and this news is in its place, everything is identical with the exception of Fire Fox and my favorites.
    Also Note *.
I'm on my new job here at work PC, the pc in question is my old pc work at home at my house.
    Thank you!

In fact, I fixed it myself last night. I found all my old files Fire Fox and my favorites were there so I was able to import my new profile.

I used a small Windows search tool I downloaded awhile there is its called 'Search all' and I typed in "Mozilla" and it pulled up all Mozilla on my pc, I clicked then through files until I found this one with the backup book marks in it. I copy and pasted the path to the file in the import screen of Fire Fox book marks and click ok and then boom, they were there. Then I made a copy of this info and place it in a folder on my desk top in case never happens again I will not have my wife calls me at work at 7:30 asking where his bookmarks are lol!

    Connect to a user profile.

You do not have an established user profile, you do not get to use the computer.

You do not sign, you don't get to use the computer.

More than likely that you does not backup the files before delete you the corrupted profile.

  • Were there an update recently that could trigger my computer load his new user profile instead of my own profile at startup?

I get the grey Dell Inspiron screen at startup instead of my profile, and all my display settings and startup programs disappeared. This corrects sometimes when I restart and sometimes I get the grey screen again. This morning (after downloading some updates last night), I got a blue screen Uni with my own icons, but all my parameters display including my image of the office had been reset. I did a system restore once before and that fixes the problem, but the problem started again with the gray Inspiron screen yesterday.

We have not seen messages indicating that the recent updates are causing problems to user profile, rarely if ever I heard of updates causing corruption of the user profiles.

Common causes of corruption of the repeated profiles:

    1. bad or, failing hard drive, no spare parts no sectors left.  Run chkdsk on the drive.  Get a diagnostic utility of disk from the web site of the manufacturer of the disc and check the disc.

2 - bad RAM, run a memory diagnostic test.

3 - viruses and other such parasites.

    4 applications - bad or ill-conceived.

5-bad or incomplete discharge of the user, ususally caused by #4 hive.  Something is trying to write to the user hive or maintain the registry handles open when the computer is currently stopped.  Install the Microsoft user profile Hive Cleanup service

  • Could not connect to the service user profile Service.

I have a little disconcerting problem.  Every day or two, I can not connect to Windows correctly.  When I start, select my account (which is also the unique administrator account) and enter my password, it spends an abnormally long time in the 'Starting Windows' screen, then I get the following message pop up in the notification area:

"Unable to connect to a windows service.
Windows could not connect to the service user profile Service.
This problem prevents limited users to logon to the system.
As an administrator, you can review... »

Shortly after this message, I get a windows error message saying:

    "Location is not available.
    C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible.
    Access is denied. »

This seems just a desktop computer black with only the Recycle bin icon on it, and the old Windows Start button in the taskbar.

While trying to understand what is happening, I looked into the application of 'Problem reports and solution' in the control panel and found that every time this happens, I also have a corresponding event of "Stopped working" "Routing and remote access.

I then restart using F8 at startup and choose the one that says something to the effect of "using the last good configuration known."

I'm not sure what that means at all, but I hope that one of you people can help.

    Thank you!

    Hello any Leafs fan,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

Looks like you're running only because of using a system restore to get back when your system is running. Now, you want to know what caused it.

Usually, when the above error occurs, it is due to a corrupt user profile.
The best way to fix this is to remove the user profile.

    • Go to the Start button
    • Right click on computer
    • Go to the properties
    • Go to Advanced System Properties on the left pane
    • Select the Advanced tab
    • Go to the user profile Section and click on the settings button
    • Find the profile for the that you want to remove and click Remove.  (It's the best way to remove the local profile in Windows Vista).
    • Connection again and you will get a new profile.
    • To get your Favorites return, go to the old profile in C:\users and copy the data manually.

The only way to identify what caused the error with the user profile is to try to reproduce it.

If you have not installed the update of Windows, then you can go to Windows updates and see what are the updates must be installed and manually download them and install them one at a time. Between the installation of the system, make sure you have a restore point that you can go back to if necessary. Once an update is installed, then close and open a session back (or reboot if required by the software update) and see if you get the error user profile. If the error occurs, then go to Services and see if the user profile service is running and set to automatic.

If you are not able to do anything when the problem occurs, then try to start in safe mode using the F8 key and see if the problem occurs in safe mode.

You can also look in the event viewer to see if there is no dealing with event profile user or Windows Update errors.
To get to the event viewer, you can type in eventvwr.msc in the box start the search. This will bring up the event viewer and you can view the summary logs and see what kind of errors you encounter.

Please post with your results and if you need further assistance.

  • Lost files after that the user profile service has no problem

In order to correct a problem with the user profile Service failed, I followed the instructions at support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 to remove the corrupted profile and create a new.  Profile corrupt (probably) was my usual login and my login of admin privileges (I didn't know there was no reason to separate them).  I created the new profile of admin privilege and connected successfully with that.  However, my original admin profile is not deleted and I can now log on that as well.  So now I have two profiles admin and a guest profile.  The problem is that I can't access my data files using these profiles.  This includes my documents Word and Adobe and other applications in which I entered the data.  The applications are there, but they appear as having no data in them.  My screen came back on the screen by default, and almost all of my desktop shortcuts have been removed.

How can I access my data?

I have a restore point on January 22.  I deleted the corrupted profile on 30 January.

    You can try this:

    1. Download, install and run the Restore of System Explorer.
    2. Select a date that precedes the January 30.

This will give you a virtual drive letter that shows the C: drive as it was to the selected date. Using Windows Explorer, you should now be able to copy files and missing files to the place where normally keep you them.

This could be a good time to review your backup strategy. The rule is: a file that is not saved is a lost file. It's only a matter of time. Regular (e.g. weekly) backups on an external (usually a hard drive in a USB enclosure) are common.
