Current recommendation for a hosting partner?

I found a good convo here 2013 which resulted in a recommendation and a few stay away froms. But it was two years ago. Much can change! Who would you recommend for a good partner hosting today?

My husband's small businesses are besieged by what is probably a problem routing or peering at Cogent. Nevertheless, our host, Newtek (previously Crystaltech), nor our service provider are ready to help - isn't that these situations can be resolved, from what I've heard of professional networks and others on the ' net to complain of similar problems. (And help, I mean to have someone in their network operations group call someone down the line in hopes of getting the necessary attention to solve the problem.)

We have no choice in providers due to its location. So, it looks like my best result by solving the problem is going to be switching hosts. I don't want to - we've been with them for 15 years, no joke! But... this problem went from something that pops up briefly once or twice in the morning at a more often that not, we can't get to our services and routes trace die MOST of the time.

Vivio Technologies (viviotech.net) has given the green light in the last thread. Additional recommendations? Alternatively, to avoid nightmares?

Thank you!

For some sites that I host on the side, I use Hostek and I can't say enough good things about them. Uptime has been great. Help on some questions, I got was even better.

Avoid Intermedia .net - their support of the CF is CF8 (May 9) and I don't get any indication that they intend to upgrade. I would also avoid HostMySite.com if your site requires safe - specifically juggling tasks of the o/s.

  • Recommendations for "Standby" host / creation of an additional data store / system partition

My ESXI host 5.0, as well as several virtual machines in the data store, resides on a drive of 500 GB of aging.

I have a disc of 2 TB to spare I would partition to as a standby host and an another data store containing the virtual machine, whose thinking is that when the 500 GB drive goes down, I can boot from the 2 TB drive and the new.

I'm looking for suggestions for the best option to implement.  Thoughts include:

    1. A new installation of ESXI on 2 TB drive and restore the configuration from a backup "vicfg-cfgbackup" of the host of 500 GB
      1. have two partitions VFMS, one, a "backup" of the current data store containing the VM on the 500 GB drive and the second is a "general" datastore ~1.5TB that I can use for a volume of FreeNAS; or,
      2. have a bigger VMFS partition
    2. Partition my drive from 2 TB to allow later installation of ESXI; and two partitions VFMS (one of the same size as on the 500 GB drive and the second using the remaining space available), or a single VMFS partition

Proceed to option (1) would result in two disks with ESXI hosts on a machine, but probably, because they are not clones, the UUID must be different so there is no problems with the discs being active.  I just need to set the BIOS to boot from the correct disk.  I understood this correctly, and if so, are there other potential problems with this approach?  The process of installing ESXI allows multiple VMFS created on the a drive, or this work manually through the command line interface, or the vSphere client

The second approach is possible, and would I partition the same drive the 500 GB (IE several partitions of LinuxNative, a systemPartition, a vmkDiagnostic and a vmfs partition), with an additional partition VFMS (or a large VMFS partition)?  Or is it not possible to install ESXI on a disk with partitions that must be kept.  From what I've seen, it seems that if the Setup program detects that the drive has [a] [s] of data store, then the option is provided for the upgrade, so maybe it's possible to install ESXI on a disc with pone or warehouses of VMFS more data on the disk...

Or maybe there is a third option that would be best.

    Any advice?

    Hi Ray,

If you have just a 500 GB drive in your host 5.0 store the ESXi and your VMX/VMDK virtual machines then why not just do the following.

    1. Remove the 500 GB drive
    2. Insert the 2 TB drive
    3. Install ESXi 5.5U2 (or 5.0, if you still need a compatibility it provides) and partition your drive from 2 TB to choose from including data storage you want.
    4. Turn off and add the 500 GB drive (or place it in a networked PC or in a basket usb)
    5. Power and copy the vmx/vmdk files of the 500 GB to your new store of data and add virtual machines to the inventory
    6. Now periodically instant and take backups of your virtual machines to your 500 GB drive (by placing it in a USB port or network caddy/PC)

    What's an option 3?

  • ESX host with local storage recommended for the host partition table?

    Hi all

I know that the best practical partition table should look like this:

However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions?  I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.

Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs.  If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-

Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines

  • What is the current screen resolution recommended for projects/records?

My team uses a variety of screen resolutions to their workstations, so we try to decide on a standard for the Captivate projects and recordings.  Our projects must be consulted by users of laptops and desktops, with a great diversity in age and the location of the eye. What is the current recommendation for the size of the Captivate project?

We had settled on 800 x 600, but since we use a Table of contents on projects, this means that people using 1024 x 768 on their office do scroll to the right to see the entire slide.  If we use 720 x 540, everything seems to be fine.

On some web pages, I've seen 1024 x 768 recommended as the minimum resolution to develop for, but that seems to be a little dated now that more people are getting wide screens. What minimum aim for you (especially if you add a Table of contents)?

    Thank you!

In my company, we use 980 x 560 px because it fits perfectly into our LMS framework and corresponds to a screen of 1024 x 768. We do not use the table of contents so the 980px wide is the actual content area.

Most of our users run 1280 x 1024 resolutions, but we have some more using the old trust 1024 x 768 while we always aim the smallest resolution as scrollbars ongoing e-Learning will kill your course.

  • Recommendations for entry level FC SAN

Currently have a NFS datastore.  Looking to add a FC SAN as primary storage and use the NAS for backups and secondary storage.

The installer includes 3 x servers HP DL380 hosts.  Recommendations for an entry-level SAN FC?  Want a unit that enables the direct connection of the 3 hosts through 8 GB FC.  Require only 12 max motorization and would use only 8 disks to start.  Budget will be 20 k $ or less for cables, discs, 3 FC HBAS and SAN.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you

Messages like these generally attract a series of 'recommendations' of suppliers, so be wary.

  • What is a VPN solution that is more stable than IPSEC VPN? What is the latest version of VPN client recommended for Windows 7 & 8 users?

    Hello

I would like to ask a few details & concerns on our existing VPN configuration.

    1. What is the Cisco VPN client recommended for users of Windows 7 and 8? Is there an official documentation for this Cisco? We currently use customer VPN Ciso 5.0.7.

    2. we are running IPSEC VPN with only 1 gateway & only local authentication (No ACS) for our client. Recently, we have some concerns that they are the VPN connection is down. Whereas if I'm the one connected to the VPN, my connection is stable. Is there any point that we must consider up in the network. Is there a better configuration or solution that we could recommend to the customer as SSL VPN?

    3. If you want to use SSL VPN anyconnect secure mobility & we want to implement redundancy on the FW, how will the license work?

    Thank you!

An AnyConnect-based VPN is the replacement recommended for remote IPsec VPN access. (source)

AnyConnect can use SSL or IPsec (IKEv2) for transport.

For an ASA redundant firewalls (running 8.3 (1) or later) any permit required AnyConnect are shared between them. that is, you just buy licenses for a member of the HA pair. (source)

  • PDF output for each host

I would like to create a PDF report in Foglight for each host showing the memory and the CPU. Is it possible that Foglight run the report so that each host will be created in a single PDF? Currently all the output is contained in a single PDF file when the report is run.

It is certainly technically possible. Many reports out-of-the-box take a list of hosts as input.

There is no reason that you can specify a list of a single host as the entry in the report.

If you drag and drop a host on a Reportal, you can select a number of views which include memory and CPU usage. You can configure and schedule a number of these reports, one for each host.

But I have to wonder about the use case. Do you want to generate a large number of PDF files, each of which contains only three pieces of information: host name, memory usage and CPU usage?

    Kind regards

  • Need recommendation for installation recovery site

    Hi all

    1. What are the basic things that we must analyze it before we recommend the company to go to oracle Dataguard for DR configuration?

    2. do you know any technology that will replicate the schema of a data center [data one] to another data center [secondary database or replication]?

    3. What are the different option to configure the disaster recovery plan at the schema level?

    Thank you

    Hello again;

I use Oracle Streams, but it is certainly an option:

    http://www.Oracle.com/technetwork/database/information-management/streams-FOV-11g-134280.PDF

It also has its own forum (you probably know that)

    Water courses

Oracle Streams comes with more than 7000 data dictionary views, and DBMS built-ins so my main concern is the complexity and moving parts. Flow also includes guard data items, for example to capture downstream. If I had to choose between streams
and Data Guard, I'd go with Data Guard, as his most popular (view) and thus better supported.

The last time I checked GoldenGate needed a license. If you need money. I also believe that the options for the host operating systems are less than the other two options.

My understanding is that you have to learn a new language with a boatload of new keywords. That said, Yes, it could be an option. It has a forum here somewhere. But I don't use it either.

In any case, it looks like you ask all the right questions. Good luck with your project.

  • Recommendation for installation of small business

I have a small remote site that is running two physical servers.  No server is too active and both were installed in 2002 and need to be retired.  I'll migrate physical servers and put them on VMware.  I think it makes sense to have two servers low range and replcation backward them.  I'm looking for recommendations for setting this up as economically as possible.

On another similar site, here's what I did: have two servers, both with a quad core processor each and both with

internal readers 10 SATA RAID. Both running ESX 3.5 Foundation. I have

Veeam Backup and replication to replicate back between the

two servers. That is, four total VM = will execute two on each server and

replicate back. If a server fails, the other server will be

Run all four VMs.  I did all of this for about $9 k.

Is there another approach in this ball park which makes more sense?  Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Hello

I set up an office in a box and use one of the tools of Veeam backup, vRanger connection, PhD virtual and remote to the local office backup desktop every night. This way if there is a problem all that send you them is a new box with all their data restored. Or restore you it if necessary. For only 2 virtual machines, replication between two hosts at the remote office looks like a bit more to kill.

If the host dies you have them replicated to the local office and people can use a VPN to access the data in an emergency. 1 host with a NAS for local backup also sounds pretty good.

It's more a problem of backup/DR/business continuity and you can watch from the perspective of these tools.

  • CGI scripts are recommended for form2email?

My site is on register.com. I am using a form2email.net script that was recommended by this host. The shape of Dreamweaver code seems to me. The script (written in Perl) runs, goes to a page of thank_you, sends an email to correct from, to and subject. But the body of the email has no data except for the value of the submit button and the script info adds to any email that it sends. I modified the script to my application using Notepad ++, changing the fields only specified by the user who had to be changed. I have thoughts about what could be bad, or a recommendation for a script form2email that works well with Dreamweaver.

Register.com says they cannot help with "coding problems," but they recommended the script, and I couldn't find help for my problem on the developer site.

Why do you have 2 tags form on your HTML file?

The reason why you get just ' Submit: [send] "in your e-mail is because you are your effective form of closure before the button 'Submit' and from another form just for the"Submit"button."

Your interpreter formmail script the only value is your "[send]", and he analyzes just as an email for you.

  • Integration of OM for task inventory vCenter fails for a host

    Hello.

I've updated my plugin for integration of OM to 1.7 2.0. I have three hosts 5.5 ESXi and vCenter 5.5 device.

The analysis of the inventory on one of these three hosts fails. I did the changes on the hosts and the inventory, used to work for guests when I used the plugin version 1.7. During testing of connection profile I get not all errors and information iDRAC identification and credentials to the host with green checkmarks on all hosts, including the one who gets the failure of the inventory scanning.

When you look at the newspapers I see a lot of security-messages and then "cannot get an IP iDRAC for host {0}" and "failure of the inventory for host 1 of 3".

    Any suggestions?

Because we support 5.5 with 1.7 install it must have been new for the hosts and vCenter.    OMSA can sometimes get messed up during upgrades. Please verify that this host is consistent in the compliance Wizard in the full desktop client. In addition, you can verify that you are a build 61? If you are on build 59 try to switch to the current 2.0 version. Change the path of update to linux.dell.com/.../latest

    • Run the update
    • This update, you will have to build 2.0.0.1262
