Recommendations for "Standby" host / creation of an additional data store / system partition

My ESXI host 5.0, as well as several virtual machines in the data store, resides on a drive of 500 GB of aging.

I have a disc of 2 TB to spare I would partition to as a standby host and an another data store containing the virtual machine, whose thinking is that when the 500 GB drive goes down, I can boot from the 2 TB drive and the new.

I'm looking for suggestions for the best option to implement.  Thoughts include:

  1. A new installation of ESXI on 2 TB drive and restore the configuration from a backup "vicfg-cfgbackup" of the host of 500 GB
    1. have two partitions VFMS, one, a "backup" of the current data store containing the VM on the 500 GB drive and the second is a "general" datastore ~1.5TB that I can use for a volume of FreeNAS; or,
    2. have a bigger VMFS partition
  2. Partition my drive from 2 TB to allow later installation of ESXI; and two partitions VFMS (one of the same size as on the 500 GB drive and the second using the remaining space available), or a single VMFS partition

Proceed to option (1) would result in two disks with ESXI hosts on a machine, but probably, because they are not clones, the UUID must be different so there is no problems with the discs being active.  I just need to set the BIOS to boot from the correct disk.  I understood this correctly, and if so, are there other potential problems with this approach?  The process of installing ESXI allows multiple VMFS created on the a drive, or this work manually through the command line interface, or the vSphere client

The second approach is possible, and would I partition the same drive the 500 GB (IE several partitions of LinuxNative, a systemPartition, a vmkDiagnostic and a vmfs partition), with an additional partition VFMS (or a large VMFS partition)?  Or is it not possible to install ESXI on a disk with partitions that must be kept.  From what I've seen, it seems that if the Setup program detects that the drive has [a] [s] of data store, then the option is provided for the upgrade, so maybe it's possible to install ESXI on a disc with pone or warehouses of VMFS more data on the disk...

Or maybe there is a third option that would be best.

Any advice?

Hi Ray,

If you have just a 500 GB drive in your host 5.0 store the ESXi and your VMX/VMDK virtual machines then why not just do the following.

  1. Remove the 500 GB drive
  2. Insert the 2 TB drive
  3. Install ESXi 5.5U2 (or 5.0, if you still need a compatibility it provides) and partition your drive from 2 TB to choose from including data storage you want.
  4. Turn off and add the 500 GB drive (or place it in a networked PC or in a basket usb)
  5. Power and copy the vmx/vmdk files of the 500 GB to your new store of data and add virtual machines to the inventory
  6. Now periodically instant and take backups of your virtual machines to your 500 GB drive (by placing it in a USB port or network caddy/PC)

What's an option 3?

Concerning

  • Add the host Cluster in the Cluster data store

How can I add host/HostCluster in the Cluster data store after the cluster data store is created. I know that we can add at this time, when you create the cluster data store, but how can we add it as soon as it is created?

I think that as long as the new host has access to all the LUNS that comprise data warehouses in the cluster data store, then no further action is necessary.

Make sure just that if using CF then zoning is configured correctly and the LUNS are not hidden from the new host.

Also, make sure you restart the analysis for new data warehouses on your new host so that it can detect data warehouses

  • Current recommendation for a hosting partner?

I found a good convo here 2013 which resulted in a recommendation and a few stay away froms. But it was two years ago. Much can change! Who would you recommend for a good partner hosting today?

My husband's small businesses are besieged by what is probably a problem routing or peering at Cogent. Nevertheless, our host, Newtek (previously Crystaltech), nor our service provider are ready to help - isn't that these situations can be resolved, from what I've heard of professional networks and others on the ' net to complain of similar problems. (And help, I mean to have someone in their network operations group call someone down the line in hopes of getting the necessary attention to solve the problem.)

We have no choice in providers due to its location. So, it looks like my best result by solving the problem is going to be switching hosts. I don't want to - we've been with them for 15 years, no joke! But... this problem went from something that pops up briefly once or twice in the morning at a more often that not, we can't get to our services and routes trace die MOST of the time.

Vivio Technologies (viviotech.net) has given the green light in the last thread. Additional recommendations? Alternatively, to avoid nightmares?

    Thank you!

For some sites that I host on the side, I use Hostek and I can't say enough good things about them. Uptime has been great. Help on some questions, I got was even better.

Avoid Intermedia .net - their support of the CF is CF8 (May 9) and I don't get any indication that they intend to upgrade. I would also avoid HostMySite.com if your site requires safe - specifically juggling tasks of the o/s.

  • ESX host with local storage recommended for the host partition table?

    Hi all

I know that the best practical partition table should look like this:

    Mount Point

    Partition

    Size

    Description

    / dev/sda (primary)

    / Boot

    ext3

    250 MB

Change of extra space for upgrades

    N/A

    SWAP

    1 600 MB

Change the maximum size of Exchange service console

    /

    ext3

    5120 MB

Change of extra space in the root

    / dev/sda (Extended)

    / var

    ext3

    4096 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with log files

    / tmp

    ext3

    1024 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with temporary files

    / opt

    ext3

    2048 MB

Create partition to avoid overfilling root with the log files of VMware HA

    / Home

    ext3

    1024 MB

Create partition to avoid an overflow of root with agent / user files

    vmkcore

    100 MB

    Pre-configured

However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions?  I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.

Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs.  If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-

Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines

  • Cannot add host to vCenter server as data store is shared with an existing host to vCenter

Recently, I removed a physical host to a virtual appliance of vCenter Server and am not able to add it to vCenter Server because I get an error message on the existing data store.  I run a simple server vCenter environment with two physical hosts and shared storage.  I've only been administering vCenter for a few months, so I'm relatively new on the technology and processes.  I searched the Internet for a few days now, but have not found documentation everyone has the same problem I have (which I find strange considering the simplicity my problem and configuration), so I tried to get help from the community of VMware.

I received an error message a day this vCenter Server cannot connect to either of the two hosts so I removed the host (rather than disconnect and plug as I should have done).  Now, I am not able to connect to the host to vCenter server because the shared storage data store comes into conflict with the same data store used by the host in vCenter Server.  I get the error message is ' "Datastore"datastore_name"is in conflict with a store of data that exists in the data center which has the same URL (ds: / / / vmfs/volumes/UUID /), but is supported by different physical storage." "  I try to remove the host data store, but get the following error message: "resource" data store name: datastore_name VMFS uuid: UUID' is in use. ".  The error stack said: "'HostStorageSystem.UnmountVmfsVolume' call failed for object 'storage system' on ESXi"IP address"."  Cannot unmount volume ' data store name: datastore_name VMFS uuid: 'UUID' because the file system is busy. Correct the problem and retry the operation. "I tried to delete all virtual machines of the inventory, put the hosts in maintenance mode, restart physical hosts, but none of my troubleshooting contributes.

I don't know what steps to take to get this data store driving with the host so that I can add it in vCenter Server.  You can provide me with any help is appreciated.

Good thing you already moved the VMs on.  For what is 'disconnect', 'remove' or 'delete' might work anyway.  You should maybe put the host in maintenance mode or even reboot the host before you can remove data warehouses.  In an extreme case, I even had to remove the host and the hypervisor installed completely rebuild on the spot.  It is not that difficult or does not take long to reinstall, so be not afraid on this subject.  A clean reinstall could still save time compared to the deletion of data warehouses.

  • Swapping hard drives for change/increase the size of the data store

    Hello:

I have an ESXi host 4.1 with 2x146GB RAID1 array (datastore1), 4x300GB RAID5 array (datastore2).  I need more space so I intend to replace 2x146GB by 2x2TB.  I'll first move virtual machines from datastore1 to datastore2, then stop the machine, Exchange records and build the new table.

    • What I need to remove ESXi cfg datastore1. before you physically remove the drives, or will start ESXi gracefully and allow me to remove the data store?
    • I'll be able to add the new data store (2x2TB) to ESXi, ago, i.e. ESXi should see table once initialized on the machine?
    • Existing data warehouses have 1 MB block size max vmdk is 256GB.  I want the new data store to have the block size of 8MB so I can have more VMDK.  I think I can fix the block size of data store when it was created, are, i.e. the ESXi installation can have warehouses of data with different block sizes, are?

Thanks a lot for the ideas you have!

    Bob

1.) why not just delete the GUI data store before you remove the discs?

2.) If your controller has the disks properly there should be no problem with their detection.

3.) Yes, each data store may have a different block size. The block size can be selected when creating the data store on disk/LUN.

  • Local disk? The host being backed up, the host accommodation VDR, or any data store managed by VCenter?

In January I will be installing 3 proliants DL380G7 running ESXi 4.1 essential Plus. We do not have a SAN. We would like to use recovery data backup host #1 on Host #2 (which would be a VDR and VCenter) and restaurant to host 3 to Dr. host 2 purposes would also go our tape backup tasks.

This scenario seems plausible? Can select backup directly from host #1 in a data store that is located on the host No. 3 using VDR?

    Thank you

Unless you add 2 without you won't have no more redundancy. As I said you can do whatever you want to do, but you will need to do a shared storage to have a visible data store on the other hosts. You can do it with the virtual appliances or physical shared iSCSI or NFS storage. If you make virtual appliances, you will need to have one on each host with virtual machines that you want to protect. The virtual machine will have storage of the local host and for other guests. You will need a camera vDR on each host with virtual machines that you want to protect. You also need enough available to restore the virtual machines in case you have a problem of storage local storage.

If the web client help go to the storage, right-click the data store tab, go to all actions of vcenter and choose Add host.

  • an additional data when writing in binary

    Hello

I modified the example "HAVE Multi-multifunction-Ctr Retrigg Pulse Train generation of sample clock" for taste and store data in the binary file.

The enclosed code may work. But when I open the file, I found for each 1000 correct samples, there is a very small vualue, as'

-2.12e - 311 "in front of them and obviously an error value. There should be only 1000 samples for each iteration. Whence these additional data?

Moreover, the acquisition of data in the application is SMU-6358.

    Thank you!

Your binary data write wrote nothing at the entrance to add Array or the size of the string, which means that it is true by default.  These extra bytes that you see are those that define the size of your table.

  • Connect the ESX host and data store on another ESX host

    Hello

    assuming for this scenario:

    Host ESX 1: esx1

    Host ESX 2: esx2

It is possible to mount esx2 datastore in esx1? (For example: via NFS). Of course, it is possible use a NAS/SAN intermediary, but I wonder if it is possible to achieve a direct mount.

    Thank you

    Eddie

Well, to allow another host to share the local data store, the host must be able to act as an NFS server. The problem is, there is no service in one of the ESX version which able to serve that. So, as said what a.p., no, is not possible.

  • I must be stupid - how can I add 2 additional 2 TB SATA as data store drive?

I feel that I must be missing something super clear here.

I assembled just a new PC, and after that discover ESXi 5.0 did not like the built-in NETWORK interface, I tracked down a compatible Realtek that seems to work. The PC has (2) 2 TB SATA drives. I was hoping their band via RAID initially, but still less discovered the RAID config 2 separate disks were ultimately presented to ESXi 5.0 installer (both drives were listed for me to choose where I wanted to install ESXi). Since I couldn't take advantage of RAID, I removed the RAID configuration and disabled in the BIOS, so the two disks were completely independent one from the other. Then I launched the installer ESXi got 2 discs to choose once again and installed on the first disc.

Now I have ESXi 5.0 to the top and running and can properly control it from another PC with vSphere and get a virtual machine. The thing I can't for the life of understand me is, it lists only a 2 TB disk in data warehouses (I guess it's the drive I installed ESXi, but maybe I'm wrong and this is the other), and I can't understand how to add in the second disk as an additional data store. Should she just automatically appear under the section of the data store, or is there something special I need to do on the drive for what he stand? Out of curiosity, I put a 8 GB USB stick, just to see if it showed as a data store and the same thing... nothing listed. This makes me think there is a formatting or its initialization or whatever method to do a disk to use as a data store.

I was hunting around trying to find an ESXi 5.0 user guide that may have a 'data warehouses 101' section, but I am unable to find a guide 5.0.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Do not hesitate to make fun of me, if it comes to ESXi 101 stuff - I don't have a ton of experience with the product... ;-)

Just in case you missed it. Go to the configuration tab in the vSphere Client. Choose the storage and to add and then disk/LUN you should now be able to choose the second disc.
