  It could be a hardware problem, but it is always interesting to try a Hard Reset as follows.

  Shut down the laptop, unplug the AC adapter and then remove the battery.  Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.  Reinsert the battery, connect the power adapter and start Notepad.
