Data networking BlackBerry (especially WiFi)

A confused spirit is a spirit of work!

Here's what I discovered recently on Blackberry and not a very pleasant discovery, I have to add.

When not having not a dataplan BB, you can use the WiFi from your application.

It seems that RIM has been generous enough to give the users of data plan BB possibility to reduce their costs on their data plan, expenses by allowing them the use of WiFi.

WiFi is used only as an opportunity for "privileged" users

If you not have data plan, you will not be able to use (this that forge otherwise be normal) WiFi connectivity.

I tried several scenarios with or without the BB data plan and came to this conclusion. Among other things, the best tool used was the famous "Network Diagnostics" tool

Anyone had success using WiFi (pragmatic, of course) on a device of non-activated data plan?

In conclusion: the white WiFi icon is indifferent on that gray

As mentioned, I do not use these flags, nor tried to determine where they can be defined.

The following how I think it works, I don't have any entry of RIM and I'm not really good on these kinds of things.  So maybe I'm completely wrong!

However my experience with the ServiceBooks leads me to think that the WiFi has two States

(1) the unit can connect using WiFi

(2) the device found "home port" and therefore will be directing traffic through WiFi.

For BIS users, I suspect that these two would never happen, because I think that home port is that RIM provided server that is public, so can be found on any WiFi network.  For BES users, the device have found the BES via Wifi to get to State 2, which means that there really be VPNed in or on the WiFi of company.

I think the flag you are testing is looking for State 2.

If you don't have a SIM card or SIM card with a data plan, you will never get to State 2.

My understanding and experience is that as long as you have State 1, you can use WiFi by coding '; = wifi interface.

I tested that I can use WiFi in this way on the following devices: 8820, 8320, Bold, Curve 8900.

    Hello

In general, BBs "prefer" WiFi network of business for services BIS data. You can always check inside the connection management > State of Services, which BIS route is average.

But you should also check inside the apps... many 3rd party applications have configuration items, inside the application, allowing you to order the application to use a data compared to another channel. What I always do is run my apps use BIS... in this way, they will follow along as BIS shifts between WiFi and my network of business data. But, if (for example) you configure an application to use only your corporate data network, while the app can avoid past well after BIS BIS to WiFi, and this app may well continue to consume data out of your network connection data carrier, even if BIS moved to WiFi.

With older OS levels, you had no choice, but to leave the "Data Services" set on "on" any channel to use, which often caused the situation described above (BIS on WiFi, but some consumption of carrier data app)... disabling the Services of data, these levels of older OS, BIS-level data for all channels off including WiFi. With the later levels of the operating system (somewhere in the OS7 range, I remember well), you can actually turn off the parameter Data Services and wireless leash... that allows BIS to still work on WiFi, but prevents any application using the data carrier network regardless of how the application is configured.

But... I'm curious... you may have about the features that only work on SmartPhones BB, yet your profile on this site says you have only a PlayBook, in which case none of this applies since the PB has no radio has WiFi and mobile only. But, you posted this in the "BOLD" of this site section, so you could guess assumes that you have a "BOLD" in addition to your PB...

    Good luck!

  • BlackBerry smartphones, I am able to update the Date and time on WiFi?

    With a 9800 smartphone (3g, WiFi) 6.0 Bundle 278 (v6.0.0.141, platform 6.4.0.64)

I'm running a few tests with my camera and I took out my Sim Card. I would like to know if I can update the Date and time on WiFi only?

Note, I am able to navigate successfully.

No, you can't do a simple navigation with wifi only

Update on time is made by the carrier or by the RIM servers. No SIM means no access to these data.

  • BlackBerry smartphone Wifi use roaming free

    Hello

I have a private BIS connection back home and I'm currently traveling abroad. My question is if I am charged for the use of data when the following settings apply:

    Mobile network = OFF

    WIFI = WE

    Data services = WE

    Data roaming OFF = services

Account these parameters of my BIS says service status = Wifi.

Does that mean I will cause NOT fresh?

    Thanks in advance

As stated in the previous update, if you don't use a mobile network, so you will not be charged.

If you use Wi - fi netwrok & keepin' mobile netwrok off the power, then no need to worry. your carrier will not charge you.

    Thank you.. !

  • BlackBerry Z30 wifi or cellular data

    Hello

How to know if my phone is using data from my package data or WiFi. I have an at & t microcell at home. The phone shows that it is connected to the cell of mico and WiFi, but how can I tell which one is in use. Is there a setting somewhere that you can choose to always use WiFi if possible?

    Thank you

    BlackBerry newbie

What I learned from a tech support BB, is that the phone has the priority for WiFi. If there is this WiFi Phone will display the WiFi symbol at the top if the WiFi is enabled.

If you go to networks and connections and WiFi is enabled, it will tell you not 'connected' or 'connected '. That you will see next to the WiFi symbol. If the phone is connected to the WiFi service it will not use the provider's data plan.

  • BlackBerry 10 wifi vs data plan

    Hello
    Here's the problem:
At home, I use Wi-Fi with my z10, when I leave the House, my logic says that the unit should switch to the data connection / service plan provided by the companies I have active.
What happens is that im without any connection and I have to turn off the wifi and restart the device. Can someone help me pls for this problem?
    Thank you

I communicate with your wireless service provider and make sure that your data plan is configured correctly. If this does not fix it they have to escalate your case to BlackBerry.

  • BlackBerry smartphone Wifi connection not - could not associate with network

Just upgraded to a Pearl to curve and al suddenly feel this seemingly common problem.

Sorry if this is a new topic on an old topic but I'm at the end of my home trying to find a solution.

To this day, I have tried

    Manual installation

    Static IP address

    Restoration of phone

    Removing the battery

    Remove the SIM card

    Restoration of router

So, today and only for purposes of research went to McDonald's for lunch and I tried their WiFi (had a quarter of a book with cheese with sprite for those interested) and just like back home, connects first time then drops then "impossible to associate with the network.

I'm on Orange with unlimited internet Blackberry to add on and everything worked fine with my Pearl.

Tried tech Orange, but good... .the less said the better there.

If anyone can confirm here that you can not use wifi if no data plan?

How do they say that I use my data service if my sim card is not in the phone

You do not use the data service IF even the SIM card is removed.

For example, I have a Bold 9000 sitting here with me with no SIM in there either. If I turn off data services, WiFi browser does not work. If turn ON data services, WiFi, browser will work. This "BOLD" PIN is saved with ANY carrier. No data of the carrier service is used.

  • BlackBerry smartphone WiFi automatic switching network with OS 5.0.0.46 1?

There was an earlier version of the OS 5 (I don't remember which) that I was using with the 8900 which seems to connect to WiFi networks automatically known to me. For example, once I have connected to my home and work wireless networks (at least once), it could automatically connects with these networks when I'm in the neighborhood. I didn't change anything on the BB or manually switch networks.

However, since using 5.0.0.46 1, the 8900 is no longer connects to the known WiFi signals automatically. Someone said that this has something to do with the setting of the 'unique scan profile' option in the WiFi configuration options screen. But I tried to turn this option on AND outside, and it seems to make no difference. Indeed, if this option is disabled, the 8900 does not connect to ANY WiFi network. If this option is enabled, it only connects to the network I need to manually choose.

Can someone tell me what their experience with automatic connection with WiFi networks known? Y at - it a setting or option that I'm not aware. It's a pain to always have to manually switch networks when I go back home to work and vice versa.

    Thank you.

It seems that the problem I mentioned in the opening post is related to 5.0.0.46 1.  Yesterday, I saw that there was a 'leaked' to the 8900 OS. This is OS 5.0.0.50 9.  I download and installed this new OS and my problem went away. Now the 8900 will connect to known WiFi networks automatically when I "Enable single profile analysis" option unchecked.

  • An other 'Wifi without data plan"blackBerry smartphones Question - Rogers Canada

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and blackberries in general... Please bear with me.

I am a student. Currently, I have a voice plan base on a LG Xenon with Rogers in the Canada. It includes minutes and unlimited texting. Enough for me.

I am looking to buy a Blackberry Curve 3 G/9300 off someone. I just want to throw my SIM in there so I can use my normal plan with the phone. My understanding is that I can phone Rogers and tell them to block all data, if I get no charge on my Bill. Fine. However, I also understand that the 9300 is a wi - fi phone.

Let's say that I get the 9300, contact Rogers and tell them to block all data on my plan.
Can I still use my browser in a Wi - Fi hotspot? How should I do? (I know that I read somewhere that you need to configure to be about to access and not talkspot... If someone could help me with this that would be great).

Also, I read that, so that I am still able to use a wi - fi connection, I need to have data 'on' in the phone. If the data is 'on' in the phone, but I've blocked data with Rogers, can I still use a wi - fi connection? This would prevent the costs of data on my Bill?

In addition, I understand that I will not be able to receive multimedia messages without a data plan. Once again, if I'm in a wi - fi hotspot... Can I receive these messages from photos?

I'm sure it's a question very well known and well hated to you all and I'm really sorry to ask, but I just need some clarification. I don't want to be stuck with a big Bill with I ever intend on paying data charges. If someone could help me with this, I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you very much!
