Defrag of SSD?

I've upgraded to Windows Vista recently and I was seriously disappointed by the defragmentation tool.   I can't understand from the interface of the tool is the behavior expected if I plan on my second magnetic disk defragmentation.  Unfortunately, the simplest interpretation of the interface is that it would also schedule defragmentation of my primary SSD drive, that would be a Bad Thing (tm).  It is also possible that the Defragmenter could may issue instructions trim rather than defragmentation move instructions, but how could I possibly believe that without knowing what is happening?  I am also frustrated by the fact that the fact that there is no feedback either on the fragmented way a disc was in first place and if it is something that has helped.

Is the approach recommended here to turn this option off and look for a third-party tool?

Hi jeff687,

Defragmentation cannot be provided for readers in the solid state (SSD), as well as certain types of virtual hard disks (VHD).

SSDS are based on flash memory, aging hard drives based on the set of standard rotation very differently. Each sector has a limited number of write cycles, so readers integrates wear leveling features that allow the reader to last more long by essentially fragmenting the reader on purpose.

Playback times are not greatly improved defragmenting as they are in standard drives, so there is no real gain Defrag, but in doing so, you increase the number of disk write, thus reducing the life expectancy of player.

In Windows Vista, there are a lot of improvements in the defrag engine and handling of fragmentation. By default, Windows Vista uses Task Scheduler to automatically keep the defragmented hard drive. The task that runs the defrag engine runs as a low-priority task.

You can now use Task Scheduler to schedule defragmentation. Therefore, you don't have to manually start defragmentation. By default, a task is created and is set to run at 01:00 on Wednesdays. If the computer is off or if the task does not run at the scheduled time, the task will run the next time that the computer is idle.

Defragmenting a SSD should never take place. If I am not deceived Samsung offer also software adapted to ensure that the SSDS works at optimal performance with user input. If defragmentation is schedualed on your machine win7 and SSD is your primary drive, know where your OS to turn off. I believe that win7 is smart enough to realize that an SSD is installed but I'm not sure regarding the win8.1, that this is done automatically.

  • Windows 8 was willing to defragment my SSD

I recently did a clean hit ("custom") installation of Windows 8 Pro x 64 on an SSD. Through the Control Panel, I was surprised to see that Windows 8 planned my SSD for weekly defragmentation. On the same SSD, Windows 7 turns off on its own defragmentation. I had to do it manually in Windows 8. How is it?

There is no defragmentation in Windows, it optimization. See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/optimize-hard-drive

With Windows 8, there is an option to 'optimize' a car. It looks like the option defragment in previous versions of Windows. However, Windows 8 recognizes that the disc is an SSD, still says he needs of optimization.

In Windows 7, WinSAT tool disables the defragmentation on SSD. For reference, see this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2727880/en-us

    Hi there @lion66

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support! It's a good place to find the help you need, so many other users, the HP experts and other members of the support staff.

In response to your question on optimization (defragmentation) you drive SSD:

You should not defragment a SSD.  It will not improve performance, as it will be on a mechanical hard drive (where an effective mechanism of data will improve disk reads).  With all the readings and the necessary paperwork, as the optimization process moves the data around, the SSD drive life is probably affected. Not really a good idea.

I hope this helps to clarify the issue for you.

  • Access Disk Defragmenter

In Windows 7, I can get the Disk Defragmenter icon, but when I click it nothing happens. Any ideas on how to actually access?

    See if this helps: http://www.petri.co.il/defragmenting-partitions-in-windows-7.htm

There is at least 2 ways to launch; He already knows you, the other is the Run/Search box, enter: dfrgui, then press the Enter key.

If you still cannot run it, then check out the list of services, which should be: "Disk Defragmenter" and the service must be on "Automatic" or "manual".

For SSD unit Defragmenter should be disabled, as it is unnecessary to defragment a SSD.

    Cheng,

It is not necessary to defragment windows 8. Former boards of defrag does not apply to windows 8. Win 8 deals with the defragmentation. Do not use all of these utilities.

The DSS that the need is even less if you defrag too will lead to the premature death of your player.

  • Should I defragment HARD drive front of cloning of SSD?

    Hello everyone.

    I just bought a Pro Series Q SSD 256 GB 2.5.

Now I want to clone my old HDD together at a new SSD using NTI Echo 3 to Toshiba.

Should I defragment my HARD old disc before the cloning process (in this case, I wonder just about the best SSD performance and life expectancy, I dislike about the time of cloning).

Disk defragmentation HARD impact positively on SSD performance in this scenario, or it will be irrelevant?
    I'd appreciate advice.

    Kind regards

In my opinion, it is not necessary, but of course, it also will not affect the performance of the SSD...

  • I have two SSD mounted on my computer, but I'm still allowed to defragment the

I thought that Microsoft did not defragment you a SSD. I may be wrong that this information has been passed to me by a friend. Anyone who could clarify for me please.

    Hi Barry,.

Defragmentation is the process to physically organize the contents of a hard drive or partition so that sectors of data of each file will be stored closer to reduce load and search times. SSDS can access any location on the disk at the same time. It is one of the main advantages on hard drives. It also means that it is unnecessary to defragment a Solid State Drive ever. So, no need for defragmentation is another advantage of Solid State Drives.

Schedule Disk Defragmenter will not be disabled by default, but it should have the SSD unselected rather under the settings Choose disks to prevent the SSD to be defragmented when the program runs.

    For the parameters of defragmentation:

  • Windows 8 Defrag lists raided SSD as HARD drive

    I have a 3rd gen core i7 with a card mother z77 (Asus P8Z77-V Pro) running Windows 8.

I have 4 SSD RAID 0 would be in 2 groups and all 4 disks are plugged into the Intel SATA plugs.  I also have a 1 than to plugged catch NO Intel SATA HARD drive.

A group is my boot (C) drive that is 2 x ADATA SX900 256 GB, and others, I have for storage (D) which is 2 x SanDisk Extreme 240 GB.

I installed the latest Intel RST drivers.

Under the Windows Defragmenter, my C drive is listed as SSD but my D drive is listed as a HARD drive.

I want my D drive will be listed as SSD so that the FILLING can be passed to it.  My C drive when I click on optimize correctly trimmed output %, while the D drive outputs % consolidated.

I have all 4 disks and two exactly the same RAID configurations in the BIOS and drivers of the RST with the exception of a difference.  Drive C is using 64 k band and D drive is using 128 KB Strip.  I can't imagine it is what makes Windows think that the D drive is a HARD drive because of the size of distribution?

Is there something I can do in the registry to recognize my D as an SSD drive?

I would rather not reformat my D drive to 64 KB stripe just to see if that solves it if there is something I can do with the registry, config, or otherwise in the software.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  • Re: Portégé R700 - how to install Windows 7 on new SSD?

    Hello!

I want to change my HDD in Toshiba Portege R700 to SSD. How to install Windows 7 on this new SSD? I don't have any Windows installation disc.

Or that it will be possible to move the partition of the old HDD to new SSD (using Acronis, I could move the partition on the new HARD drive)?

I've heard of partition offset and this SSD block should be the same as FAT cluster (the same alignment).

All advice? (I know should I defragment my HARD drive before moving :))

    Hey Buddy,

    > I do not have any Windows installation disc.
Create the Toshiba recovery disc as mentioned in the manual of the user before you exchange the disc, then you have a Setup disk. The Toshiba recovery disc will restore parameters of the box with all the drivers and tools. It can be used on each disc and how many times you want.

After this change the drive and start the Toshiba recovery disc. Follow the instructions on the screen and everything will be installed.

    Check this box!
