    DEFRAG
You should be able to defragment the drive of the computer from the Windows XP operating system. It is not something that Firefox will do for you.

I have Win XP sp3 and the page files are fragmented.   I use Defraggler and make to defragment files page with it.   Is this OK to defragment files page?

    Thank you.

Sure.  Defragment the pagefile is fine.  It's just a little difficult to defragment a file that is currently in use.   Microsoft provides even a utility called "PageDefrag" who will do this as well.

The program that I use is called Defraggler, it was created by piriform LTD and it is a simplified version of windows Disk Defragmenter. It is not defragment my disk correctly. It is said that it has completed the defrag but it's still 23% defragmented files defragmentation. I pressed defrag again and again but he still took no action and said always full defragmentation when clearly there is no. I myself had a look at the options and settings and it should properly according to them. Any help will be kind of you. Thank you.

  • If I create a preinstallation of Windows 7 environment and run Windows Defrag with the switch/w, be it defragment files XP defragmentation analysis shows that "good behaviour"?

I'm trying to defragment all the last possible file on my hard drive.  I was quite the journey of optimization, learning of virtual disks, ReadyBoost, command line and optimization of registry TCP, swap file optimization (investment strategy) and now for anti-virus and defragmentation preinstallation environments.

I find it very difficult to get a defragmentation program to try to defragment files, he thinks that he can not touch.

I learned today how to create a 64 - bit Windows 7 PE with inclusion of work from the command line defragmentation file and wonder if it will cooperate with me or not.

And Yes, I know that some people balk at the idea of a no failure or PE defrag mode, but I insist.  There are too many files cannot be modified running in a normal Windows environment, as well as in a safe-mode start environment.

I learned the true benefits of defragmentation via the use of hard disks in very low yield (that is another story) and want to optimize my installation in my hobby of tinkering with the software.

What is the problem with that?

    Thank you very much.

Personally, I'm not interested in the file of the page, I have more than enough ram, nore the mft. And any increase in the theoretical performance will have no impact on this system

There are third-party defrag programs with more options than the buit in defrag.

Like I said it was just an observation

  • Why do I defragemented files after I defraged

After I defrag I still have fragmented files later

There are several reasons that files can remain fragmented.  One is that there is no contiguous space on the drive that is large enough to hold the entire file.  Another is that the file can be used at the same time you are defragmenting.  There of nothing wrong with a sparse file, but if you want to pin a file or two that you want to really be defragmented, try using the command line utility free "contig" on the microsoft website:

    HI Tina,

How are you trying to access Defrag?

You can try to click on start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> Disk Defrag.

    or

Open my computer-> right click on your local drive C-> properties-> tools->-> Defrag defrag now.

    or

You can try click Start-> run, type &-> compmgmt.msc-> navigate to storage-> Disk Defrag-> select your disk and Defrag.

    I hope this helps.

I ran Chkdsk it says nfsd. file, reading - in only. He starts to run, and then says error. cannot continue to operate in reading - in only. I need to know what to do a d how to please!

First of all, tell me if you have used the /r switch when you run the disk check. If this is not the case, do. Then, you can review the log file and see if bad sectors have been marked as faulty. If this isn't the case, it is probably not necessary to run the hard drive diagnostics test.

  • Defrag some files cano't be

Defragmenting drive C not completed. I get a message that says: some files may not be defragment?

Some files?  What is 'some files?

That could be, but if you want to know what's happening, you must provide additional information.

Some Windows files that are 'used' cannot be defragmented after that XP starts (as the hiberfil.sys pagefile.sys, file registry, etc), so you must defragment these files before XP ends to load up.

Get PageDefrag and other tools, videos, and comments by Mark Russinovich, the master of Windows troubleshooting here:

    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/Sysinternals/bb545021

Page Defrag will add an entry to the registry to run Defragmenter page during the next reboot.  The registry entry is automatically deleted after the system restarts.

These files and other system will be defragmented at the next reboot.

The defragmentation report lists files that cannot be defragmented - is that what you are talking about and what are the names of the files?

You can save the report to your desktop as a text file and then copy / paste the contents here.

If you run low the Windows Defragmenter disk space may have difficulty defragmenting your hard drive.  XP needs of 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive to run properly (you will get an information message if you do not have enough space).

The XP Defragmenter cannot defragment the files that are in use (such as the registry, newspapers, events, pagefile.sys files, etc.), so they can appear as fragmented in the defragmentation report files.  These files need to be defragmented before XP load completely and starts to use these files.

On a healthy system, it is certainly possible to have zero files fragmented (according the XP report) using PageDefrag.  This does not always mean that you will suddenly see more free space on your HARD drive, so don't let your expectations go beyond the reality when you get to zero the defragmented files and have still not run out of space.

You can read and download PageDefrag download here:
    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/Sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

Here is an example of such a report (VolumeC.txt) showing zero fragmented files that I just ran on my system:

    Defrag results

    Volume (c)
    Volume size = 932 GB
    Cluster size = 4 KB
    Used space = 55,90 GB
    Space free = 876 GB

Fragmentation of files = 0 percent
Fragmentation of free space = 0%

    Fragmentation of files

    Total fragmented files = 0
    Total excess fragments = 0
Way of fragments per file = 0.00

    Pagefile fragmentation

The pagefile size = 5.22 GB
    Total fragments = 0

    File fragmentation

    Total records = 3 918
    Fragmented folders = 0
    Excess folder fragments = 0

The Table of master files (MFT) fragmentation
    MFT size = 294 MB
    Number of records MFT = 174 130
    Percentage used MFT = 12%
Total of fragments in the MFT = 0

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments of files in file size that cannot be defragmented
    None

There are many free third-party defragmenters that you can download from the Internet.    People like other tools better than casting in the XP Defragmenter, even if you can see in the report that precedes, the XP Defragmenter is certainly capable of a result of zero of fragmented files.

  • Defrag results found 110 GB of files fragmented 149 GB of capacity - if I delete these files?

About a month after an automatic download, my XP system was out of memory.  I couldn't run defrag because there was not enough free space. I moved well enough to defragment files & this resulted in 110 GB of fragmented files.  112,768,540 KB are Yahoo crash logs files.  I can't just delete these files?

    Hi Cathyhahn,

Accident of newspapers is generally used by programmers to find out why the program crashed.

Their default location may be different depending on the operating system you are using.

Yahoo crash logs is usually generated by the e-mail application that can be found on:

The documents and Settings\user\application data\yahoo\companion\crash newspapers

You can delete these files without doing any damage to your system however do not delete the folder itself.

  • Files reading TDMS problem in Labview 2010, created in 2009, error-2503

I did my measurements on my laptop with Labview 2009 installed.

The file format has been TDMS v1.0

I can read these files with the TDMS files viewer and I am able to do analysis on my laptop.

On my desk I have Labview 2010.

If I run the vi in Labview 2010 analysis, I get the following-2503 error: specified file does not have the PDM file format standards.

    What's wrong?

I can open the file in Excel with the add-in.

I've included a tdms file created on my laptop in Labview 2009

For this problem, it's a bug in LabVIEW 2010 (not in previous versions of LabVIEW), sorry for the inconvenience. While the side R & D to fix this problem, we also a workaround solution, but perhaps a little more complicated:

    (1) Please use older version of LabVIEW (like 2009 or 8.6) for defragement file by using the node TDMS defragment, if it works fine, you can then open it défragmentée TDMS in LabVIEW 2010.

    (2) if the PDM defragment returns an error, then you can always find your defragmened files in the temp directory of Windows, but under a different filename (randomly generated), you can type "%Temp%" Run windows to open your temporary file.

  • My drive Local (c) cannot be defrag. Help, please!

My drive Local (c) cannot be defrag, because there is that 1% unused space. The defragmentation tool requires at least 15% to be effective. I have removed all unnecessary programs in Control Panel and use the disk clean up several times, but there are so defragmented files it will not improve the disk space. Help, please!

You have two choices.   Buy a bigger HD and transfer data through or delete things until you get to 15%.  It's a large amount od deletion so I would opt for the drive.

  • Defrag d: when boot

Sorry for my bad English. I pagedfrg.exe.It to defrag the c: drive every boot but I will not defragment the d drive too at every start. What can I do?

PageDefrag only defragments files select system that cannot be defragmented when Windows is up and running, (hives of the registry and the swap file), it does not defragment the entire disks.  PageDefrag is a Native NT application that can be run before Windows starts to defragment files that may otherwise not be defragmented when Windows is running.  Other than this kind of file system, the drives can be defragmented when Windows is in place and so it is not necessary to use these applications type of natives to defragment your disks.

If you want to defragment your drive when you start your computer, you can use the built-in utility Defrag.exe and set a scheduled task to run when your computer starts.

How to automate disk defragmenter using Task Scheduler tool in Windows XP

Please note that there is no need to defrag every boot!
