Dell Inspiron 17 - start plus-forts clicks with an interval of 2 seconds

My Dell Inspiron 17 laptop computer does not start at the top.  When I press the power button the power light and drive LED turns on - then the drive LED turns off and then there is a strong continuous click with an interval of 2 seconds.   I then press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds until the power goes off--and I try again - sometimes 8 to 10 times before it starts.  When he finally starts everything works fine (all my Apps and my email and my Internet access - all).  I ran the Dell, hardware diagnostics and they all passed successfully (ePSA Diagnostics & Support Assist Tests etc.).

I thought that my hard drive is perhaps go wrong, so I bought a new replacement WDC WD5000LPVX-75V0TT0 of Western Digital and then I cloned it.   After cloning over - I tried to boot the laptop - but when even having the same problem (will start no-strong clicks with an interval of 2 seconds).  Once it arrives - everything works beautifully.

Nobody knows what will fix this problem?

HI Fayedc,

You can start the BIOS (F2)? If the system has passed all the diagnostics, I don't know why you bought another hard drive.

Furthermore, you have Windows 7?

  • A Dell Inspiron 531 computer will be compatible with Windows 7? Conflicting information between sources.

    I looked on these contradictory information, and here's what I found... I'm still not sure about that.
    I found information about this Dell Inspiron 531 computergoing to be compatible with Windows 7 on the site of Microsoft and in the control panel of that computer system information.

    But then I found more information on the Dell website that indicates otherwise.

    Please follow me closely here, it took some time to compile this info.

    Allows first eliminate what would be the simplest solution I already tried, that would be the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor" located at this address: http://Windows.Microsoft.com/UpgradeAdvisor

    On this Web page, there is a small program to download and install that is supposed to tell me if this computer is compatible with Windows 7 in processor speed, RAM, graphics card, etc. and devices, automatically... Unfortunately, it does not work... I installed it and it stopped with the message: "Windows 7 advisor stopped working" so that program and this option is unnecessary.

    It is the "Windows 7 system requirements" list of information... it shows that I need at least a 1 GHZ processor or faster, 32-bit... This Inspiron 531 has a 2 GHZ processor and is 32-bit. This page is says I need 1 GB of RAM... it has 1 GB of RAM. It says I need 16 GB of available disk space, it has a C 138 GB primary hard drive which will be deleted when Windows 7 is ready to be installed. And he said that I need a"Graphics card DirectX 9 (with WDDM1.0 or higher driver)" ... the last part in parentheses is the only part that I'm not sure, but my system via the control panel information shows most of this information as being adequate.

    Go to this URL: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd531/en/OM/appendix.htm#wp1149549 to see the Dell Inspiron 531 annex page online and click on the link above titled, 'Specifications' or just scroll to see... there in the category 4th down titled 'Video', it shows the "video integrated Nvidia (DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.9 Graphics Processing Unit) '. This seems to correspond to the above listed"DirectX 9" info page "Windows 7 system requirements".

    But then there are 2 pages Web of Dell, which indicate that this Dell Inspiron 531 is only supported by Windows Vista and Windows XP... see this URL for this Web page... http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/osmatrix/index?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs& ~ ck = mn

    It shows, once you scroll down just a bit, a list of the current Dell computers that can support Windows 7... the Inspiron 531 is not on this list.
    This list excludes the Inspiron 531, but it then says' does not have a computer on these lists? Click here to shop for a new Dell! » .. .bad grammar side, this line that I'm pointing out may just be trying to sell me a new Dell computer, if I actually need or not Dell
    !

    And finally my info the computer from the control panel shows aprocessor 2 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM or 958 MB anyway and the 32 bit OS.

    And Yes, I ran the built-in diagnostic test Dell PSA on this computer and when it tests the sound card and the speakers, he plays the song a bit in each channel and then on both channels, so I know that the material is good on this computer.
    I know it's a lot to go through... it took me a while to compile this info, and I sent a version of this letter with screenshots and other MS Tech in India who I worked with for a month on the phone and email to correct a problem of 'no sound' that simply cannot be beat.
    But I'm trying to make sure before I do a clean install of Windows 7, when the disc arrives here, I don't clean it hard drive alone to experience Windows 7 does not work on this machine.
    Actually, I'm a Mac user and I don't have much trouble in those... Just trying to fix the computer of my mother for it, and now it seems that trying to install Windows 7 is the only way to get the sound back so that my mom can enjoy some music again.
    I never thought that I would like to know as well on the PC troubleshooting I've learned in the last month, but I don't like, and there is still no sound on this computer and everything has been tried... I made a collage of a hundred different error messages from Windows that I think I'll put it up for bid on ebay... I just want to go home to my trusty Macs.

    Please give me your comments... I would of course welcome.
    Thank you
    NuMetro

    I am happy that you have it installed, but you have sound?

    I was too surprised when Windows 7 to install all my drivers in device for me!

    The video driver that it wanted to install was even later that of Nvidia. Also, it does not have the driver Physx I needed, so I had to install one myself. The other driver, that he has not installed was the pilot for the X - Fi card. He did install my motherboard if chipset drivers, but I turned around and installed ones that came with my motherboard.

    Windows 7 does a better job to settle on earlier versions of Windows, but do not watch install what he wants to make sure that it does not have something that you don't want. He came along and updated my video driver again, but when that happens, it installs just the driver itself and not the driver Physx and my video control panel. Now when he talks about video drivers, I just go to Nvidia and download the full set.

    You have the option in there for Windows Update to select which updates you want to allow. I would have put to allow you to decide which ones you want and do not let do it on his own.

    I'm glad you're a happy camper! I do not see where you come with Vista, I jumped on this operating system completely because of the horror stories I've heard.

  • Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 does not work with the charger. Charger is not recognized. No problem with charger.

    My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 does not recognize charger. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 months ago.
    It was plugged and work in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed he was running on battery only. It does not start without battery (charger just plugged).

    1 this is what I did to debug. Me and my brother, we bought the same computers Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. That's why a debugging purposes, it was good.
    I took my charger and plugged into his computer. And it works. Certainly not the charger problem I guess. And when I plug the charger my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger provided with the laptop.

    2. now, laptop is running on battery only, so that means that this motherboard works. I think so.

    3. the next thing I did was charger disconnected and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold the "Power" button for 45 seconds to pay a royalty to the flea market. Charger plugged in but laptop will not start.

    4. then I booted the laptop on battery, went to the BIOS and check if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it does not recognize charger. So, if this isn't a charger so what else can we?

    5 laptop has no strange smells so I don't know if something happened with the motherboard, but I guess that motherboard is ok because it works battery.

    6. I was thinking of updating the BIOS, but I can't do it, because it will be not be updated then the laptop runs on the battery, it needs to be plugged.

    Now I'm stuck. I don't know what I can do. I'm willing to spend a little more money on it to try to fix.

    If someone had such a problem in the past please let me know what you have done and if it fixed it.
    Or if anyone has any other ideas, I will be happy and appreciated the help.

    Hello and sorry for this late post. Just had this problem... If there is nothing wrong with the AC adapter, it's a software problem.

    Close the laptop... Unplug the AC adapter / CC... Remove the battery... Plug the power adapter... Start the laptop... Go to the control panel... Find and select the Device Manager... Batteries, left click... Uninstall Microsoft AC Adapter, uninstall Microsoft ACPI compatible with battery control method... In fact, uninstall all you can under the batteries, but that should be all there is. It will be re - install when starting... Stop cell phone... Remove the AC adapter / CC... Replace the battery... Plug the power adapter... Start the laptop... Now, everything should be good.

  • Dell inspiron 15 starts

    OK here is the problem, when I start my computer after that it loads it goes directly to the black screen where it asks u want to start windows normally safe mode and etc, but when I press on start normally it goes to another screen so I'm going along the spirit, he and eventually take me to start windows normally screen what can that do for just my computer start. He also says on the top of the screen tells me to insert the disk installation, and guidance on how to fix it, but im still confused.

    Follow these steps to try to solve your problems of boot.

    Restore point:

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
    Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
    When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
    Link above shows what the process looks like and a manual, it load the repair options.
    NeoSmart containing the content of the Windows Vista DVD 'Recovery Centre', as we refer to him. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
    Read all the info on the website on how to create and use:
    http://NeoSmart.net/blog/2008/Windows-Vista-recovery-disc-download/
    ISO Burner:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html
    It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.
    You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.
    It is NOT a disc of resettlement.
    And the 32-bit is what normally comes on a computer, unless 64-bit.
  • Dell Inspiron 530 starts 3 times
    For several months, my old Inspiron 530 of 5 years had the following problem:
    A cold, start it from power for a few seconds (noise noisy fan), then turn off, then turn on for a few seconds, then power off, then turn on and proceed as usual.  So from a cold start, it starts up 3 times in total.
    When the computer is restarted, it will be turned off, to power for a few seconds, turn off lights up again, and proceed normally.  So a reboot, it lights up a total of 2 times.
    I tried the following hotfixes and so far none of them have solved the problem (it may not in the right order):
    I contacted Dell support.  They said it was a "software problem" and they try several different things on a connection at a distance.  After about 5 hours of trying to solve the problem without a solution, I was told it was not a software problem, but a hardware problem and referred me to the support group equipment tech.  The technician of this group told me that it was a software problem and that I needed to reinstall the operating system.  Since I also read on the internet that it could be a power supply issue, I refer to Dell sales that could sell me a replacement power.
    I bought food and installed it, but that has no effect.
    I bought a new video card and installed it, but it had no effect on the problem of restarting and cause additional problems.  I removed the new video card and reinstalled the old video card.
    I contacted Norton do a virus removal within distance.  I have had two technicians various Norton works remotely to resolve the startup problem, but they failed.
    As a last resort, I decided to go ahead and re-install the operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.  I actually reinstalled software twice, because I didn't reformat the C: drive when I did the first resettlement.  I did the reformatting of the C: drive of the resettlement of 2nd.  My Inspiron 530 boots now much faster and also runs much faster, it will still take 3 starts to go.
    So if anyone out there has any idea on this issue, be it a fix, or if I should just let it be and not be concerned about it, please reply to let me know your suggestions.  If additional details are required, please let me know.
    3. start problem solved! Change video card. Got rid of my stock 8300GS and replaced with GeForce 8500GTfrom Amazon Echoshop for about $40.00 and cared of the 3 start problem! Good luck what a card impressive. I never thought it was the map of the origin of the problem? Good enough technicians could figure that one out. SURPRISE LOL
    Hi joseph97svl,
    Thank you for the update.
    Because the HARD drive is detected in the BIOS, and also the successful test, the equipment works as expected. I suspect it is a software problem and you can consider restoring the system using the recovery discs.  To restore the system using the recovery media, follow the instructions given in the following link:
    http://Dell.to/12Z2Lkq
    In case the recovery discs are not created, send me a private message with the service system number to help you further.  Please click on my name and click on start the Conversation to send me a private message.
    Hello
    1. have you made changes on the computer recently?
    It is possible that a third-party application is causing the conflict. We can find the contradictory application using the clean boot.
