  I have a HP DV9724tx T7700 core 2 duo with 3 GB of ram with 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium.

  On December 2009/January 2010, there were five windows updates published by Windows. These are:

  -Updated fo filter junk e-mail in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB977840) - haven't managed to update this a single OK

  -Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB979202) - reinstall it froze my screen

  -Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Vista (KB978207)

  -Update for Vista (KB972270)

  -Windows malicious software removal tool - January 2010 (KB890830)

  When I installed these updates, restart the screen would be artifact (blocks, lines, random colors) and then finally hang / lock the entire computer. Using system restore several times at a much earlier date made this judgment.

  The license key and product type must match (XP Home vs XP Pro;)  (and OEM license vs the retail license).  If it's a Dell computer and you get the product key from a sticker on the case, then there is likely a version of Windows XP OEM this product key.  If you install Windows XP from a retail installation disk, then the types of licenses will not match.  You will need to use the license that accompanies the retail installation disc or you will need to contact Dell for an OEM installation disc to go with the license on your sticker case.

  After visiting about 5 different sites now "Ways to solve this problem", believe it or not, I still have the problem bloody! :(

  A site proposed shutdown PC and unplug it from the power supply, then plug it back start-up and back... this as did not work!
