Desktop appears as a folder

Windows XP SP3; the desktop appears suddenly as a complete file with the blue bar on the left side of the screen.  (I have available page) and I can't find anyway back to 'normal' of office.  It is a problem of user account; I can add a user & log in as this user and desktop is normal.  If I created a new user; flying over all the stuff and delete the old user account.

Then yesterday, I attached a second monitor, test and when I unchecked "extend the desktop" and applied, he did again on this user account.  This happened for months & I can't understand it.

Any help appreciated.  To view the screenshot, click on http://jasb.com/images/desktopimage.jpg

  • Files and folders in root appear in my folder of Documents and office

It probably happens on the Windows NT-based versions (has happened to me on a XP PC and a PC in 2000 that I intend to upgrade both of them soon). The files and folders of the program directory (C :) root Windows upward in the office and the folder My Documents. These files are not shortcuts and they show that they are located in the root of the drive, even if they appear on the desktop and My Documents. They can be handled then that mirrored to the root of the drive. I dropped a simple file to the root one test while it appears on the locations and then I deleted the file of the said test from the office and he left root. They don't seem to do anything when I click on them. It is not happened to me before. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is this a bug?

That is some progress.  Normally the desktop folder works the same way, where he will have a "location" at the top of the Properties tab.  This is a feature you'll see normally special "shell folders" as this (shell being the part of the operating system that see you, or the user interface).

If it has lost its distinctive feature, you can usually restore it quickly in the registry.

    1. First of all, make sure that you have a folder that is named "Desktop" in your personal folder 'username '. You will set the registry to use this folder as storage of office location.
    2. Keep Windows Logo type R to display the run box, type REGEDIT and click OK and give permission to the administrator if necessary.
    3. Navigate through the list of files (registry keys) on the left to find this place:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    4. Look for the "Desktop" entry on the right (registry value), and double-click it to change data to be:
      %UserProfile%\desktop

The %UserProfile% is a variable that is everywhere where your current profile is stored.  Administrators and power users can use it to move their entire profile without having to define all those places individually.

    5. Click OK to save it, and then close the registry editor.
    6. Lot of windows completely and reconnect of re - initialize your user profiles and folder locations. Or just restart your computer, either way :)

At this point, right click and properties of the desktop folder should now have the expected location tab (let me know if not).

If you ever want to move these places, a little advice: make sure that you have specified a folder name.  In other words, do not place your Documents to store in just the G: drive. Instead, create a folder on the target drive and don't forget in the location (such as G:\Docs).  One last thing: don't try to define both 'special' folders to be stored at the same single physical location (do not set two in the same place).

Here is a picture of this registry on Windows 10 location, but these steps are the same, all the way back to Windows 2000 (maybe sooner).

Let me know how it goes, I hope that he gets all cleared up.

  • icons on my desktop appear as "Microsoft Exporer' generic icons

All the new icons on my desktop appear as 'Microsoft Exporer' generic icons. Any help appreciated...

    Jim,

You can create shortcuts to your favorite in the Favorites web pages and the favicons will be there. Or you can create a favorite on a link bar in Internet explore and that display the "logo".

The problem you are having is a common one in terms of URL shortcuts are considered. When you create a shortcut to a Web site, or add to Favorites IE, Internet Explorer downloads a file icon named "favicon.ico" from the Web site. This is the icon file that contains the icon that see you on your shortcuts.

Windows Vista does not support customization of shortcut icons Internet Explorer on the desktop other than the steps in my previous post. These 'logo' to mark specific icons are called the favicons. Favicons do not appear on the default desktop shortcuts in Vista. If the favicon doesn't exist for your shortcut that will be located in the temporary Internet files. If you can find it there when you browse after step 2 of my previous post, you can use it. If it isn't there, using another icon, is your only choice.

Internet Explorer stores the favicon file in the folder Temporary Internet Files itself. This means that whenever you clear your temporary internet files, or after a defined number of days when IE erases the file icon file is lost. Accordingly, because Windows is no longer able to find customized icons for Web sites, it is the icon of Internet Explorer by default.

  • "Device Failed to Connect" sound notification with no popup at startup once the desktop appears

When the desktop appears, I sound "dududu" with no popup. I had to look it up in the audio file and the explanation next to it said noise "device failed to connect.

I currently have no device attached except speakers and keyboard and mouse. I bought a HP Phopsmart printer and installed but it does not work well, so I uninstalled it. I left the USB cable connected to the computer after disconnecting the printer after reboot several times, and then disconnected. At this time the sound notification has begun.

I don't know if the printer had nothing to do with it. What should I do to fix this? Help, please. Thank you.

Have you tried to remove your printer as described in the article?

If no, then try and see if the problem still occurs.

  • I can not longer right click my desktop or in a folder and get a new Forlder.

I am running Windows 7 and I can not longer right click my desktop or in a folder and get a new Forlder.  My only option is a "new compressed folder (zip file)" the only thing I added to my computer (that I know) is Norton Internet Security.

I do not think Norton is responsible for this, but it's quite the security program user-friendly Windows less you could choose and often causes other issues.

After that close and relaunch the Muse, then follow the correct marked steps in this post - Muse cannot 'see' my modules installed modules Adobe.

I have several alerts per day but don't need to see them in my Inbox until the end of the day. I know there is a way to make them appear in a folder that I created for them - just can't seem to make it work. Can you help me?

    1. You can use a Message Filter to move or copy them to another folder as soon as they arrive.
    2. You can configure a folder Saved Search to bring together unread messages ('new').
    3. You can use the view. Records | Unread to view all the folders containing unread messages. When you open such a file, the "Unread" filter in the QuickFilter bar will show unread messages for you, whatever the depth within the wires, they are buried.
  • downloads do not appear on the desktop or in a folder

If I download a program, save it on the desktop or a folder, the program does not show upward (I can't find it). If I download the program again, it says that the program is already here and I want to write. This only happens on this one computer, Dell.

Maybe downloads are being hidden by a reason any.  Go to start / Control Panel / folder Options / view / and check the box to show system files and hidden.  While you are there, uncheck the box for Hide extensions of known file types (which can be useful later).  Now let's see if you can see the downloads.

Do you know when this problem started?  Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started.  Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/.  Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points.  If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two.  NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates.

    I hope this helps.
