Directly using a physical disk without virtual file system?

I wonder if it is possible to directly use the physical disk with VMware vSphere Essentials Kit and will be that this increase in the performance of MS SQL database if located on this topic over on the virtual file system?

/ * the BONES still lie on the file system, virtual, or if possible - physics directly on disc again * /.

Yes, you can use RDM with vSphere Essentials. RDM may or may not be faster, and many consider it's a wash. It would be interesting to test it for you, but don't assume that you will get performance much better with a vs the other. RDM can also complicate things like backup strategies.

Thanks for all your great suggestions and help in the BK.

We are just past the entire system to the hard drive. This will eventually hurt us in the end, but at this point we don't have an option, our system has been down since the day wherever we improved to CF11. We did a lot of testing before the migration of load and our tests, it worked. But there were many problems with the IIS connectors and we also installed new memory. There has been a lot of things and it is difficult to find the exact cause.

However, the error should always be reported as a bug. It gives a wrong idea, which is actually the issue and this will lead to someone else in the future in a ghost rabbit hole that does not exist.

  • Prepare to use a physical disk or an unused Partition

    VMWare Workstation version 8.0.4 build-744019

    SE host: Windows 7 64-bit

Host HW: 8 GB, Intel Core I7-2670QM 2.2 GHz (4 cores, 8 wires)

I have a 512 GB SSD (OCZ Vertex 4) in my machine, bought specially to speed up the construction process of the cores for embedded systems.

I installed Windows 7 64 bit on this SSD and booting from it. I shrunk the drive in Windows 7 diskmanager and released a 100 GB partition to use for a virtual machine running Windows 7 32 bit.

Training VMWare this 100 GB on disk 0 partition format the easy installation. The Windows 7 installation screen displays this error in step "copying files...". ». The error is 0 x 80070057.

The States of using VMWare guide (on page 14, under the title 'Prepare to use a disc or unused physical Partition'):

On Windows Vista and Windows 7 hosts, you cannot use the system partition or physical disk that

    contains, in a virtual machine.
I just read that I can't do what I'm doing? I can't use a partition on the physical disk that is used to start the host for a virtual machine operating system?
What is the technical reason for this? Is this something that will be possible in the future (or even now with a workaround) or is it something that is technically simply not possible?
The reason for me trying to create a virtual machine that has direct access to my SSD is to speed up the virtual machine. I use it to build kernels. Build a kernel 'natively', so outside of a VM, takes 5 minutes. The same core within a virtual machine of construction takes 30 minutes, and it's on a virtual machine that has files of virtual disk it's on this same (very fast) SSD.
Is there another way to speed up my built inside the virtual machine? The bottleneck is disk access. It's just terribly slow in the VM and lightning fast outside.

I hope someone can give me some advice! Thanks in advance!

You can only assign physical drives in a virtual computer with a crowd of Win7 so player set 'offline '.
Otherwise, you will encounter problems just after starting the virtual machine - the host then banned access to training and the virtual machine stops

Of course, you can NOT set the drive system 'offline' on a host with a single disc.

The performance of a physical disk and a preallouee vmdk should be almost the same.

  • Use a physical disk?

I'll install some VMS soon to a SSD drive, the server on which the VMs will be there will be two of the most recent Intel 34nm SSDs, the size of 80 GB. I thought that I could choose the option to let the virtual machines have a direct access to the physical disk, but then I started to wonder if it would cause problems with multiple computers on a single disc. So my first question, does anyone know if there will be conflicts of two virtual computers that have "direct access to the local hard drive?

Also, when you select the option "use physical drive", is still a single virtual disk created on this disk file? Or he writes all the individual hard disk as if it were a BONE regularly installed on the drive?

My last question is probably a little more complicated for you all, as he considers how solid state drives works. SSD drives have a limited number of write cycles, normally, for companies, servers SLC based drives are used and life is not a problem. MLC readers become better and with lower usage, that this server will get, life expected to be good for 5-10 years on each disc. Now VMWare creates a single virtual disk file that is written to disk, when changes are made to the virtual machine to the operating system, these changes are then written to the virtual disk on the physical hard disk file. So what I was wondering is when changes are made and this virtual disk file has a change to it, how these changes get will write for the reader in solid state? Because if it rewrites the file of virtual disk to the same cells on the disk then these cells will wear very quickly while other space the disc is still brand new. If the file will be written to a new set of cells? Or will be written only the changes to the drive, and even if it's a single file changes will be written to a completely different sector on the drive?

Joakim - I don't trust gross in anyway records when you use 'partitionedDevice' and the logical partitions / extended.

In most cases, I have seen that this creates problems.

But having more than one primary partition is ok

  • Can I use my physical disks in VDI deservi PCOIP?

    Hello

in the past, it was possible to use the physical computer drives when I am connected to the VDI with additional RDP Protocol as a hard drive.

Now, with PCOIP, intercommunication printer function works but not access to readers.

It s very important for us to share data between computers in our field crew and the virtual machine that is hosted at Headquarters.

The setting of 'file sharing' in the VMware tools is enabled.

Does anyone have an experience about it?

PCOIP not drive remapping as RDP has done.   An alternative would be to use a computer connection USB storage device and use the USB view redirection functionality.

  • 12.04.01 Ubuntu x 86-putting in place a virtual Windows XP machine to access the physical disk

    Dear community,

I'm new to VMware Workstation, but progressed in computer science.

At first, I want to give you a brief introduction of my system and my goal.

HP ProBook 6550 b (System with Intel Core i5 processor Intel-based)

The HARD drive access mode: S - ATA AHCI

    Operating systems: Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04 x 86, Ubuntu 12.04 x 64

    Boot Manager: GRUB2

VMware Workstation (trial period) to 9.01 Linux x 86

Goal: install MS Windows XP Professional with physical disk access several partitions on the hard drive local

The installation of VMware Workstation 9.01 on my system Ubuntu 12.04 x 86 worked perfectly, without any error. Large.

I was able to set up and run a Windows XP VM standard by creating a new virtual disk , following the Nice Wizard.

It was just to test, but just after I tried to configure the same OS as a virtual machine using a physical disk (for advanced users) to directly access a local hard drive.

Also, I selected "BusLogic (recommended)" on the choice of type of I/O controller.

As a device, I chose the HARD internal laptop drive and used two individual partitions (the real partitions on my HARD drive I wanted access within the virtual machine).

These partitions have been preformatted with NTFS (and not have been mounted in my Ubuntu).

However, I was not sure if Windows XP has been will be installed on one of these partitions.

The turn on/off the virtual machine to install the OS, I got the message following (msg1):

"You are using a SCSI drive. Performance of dual-boot SCSI physical drives are poor. The installed operating system could not start correctly in the virtual machine. However, the physical SCSI disks work normally so exclusively in the virtual machine. »

Just after the message following (msg2):

"If you dual-boot a native Windows installation, problems can occur when attempting to start your system in VMware Workstation." For more information, see "http://vmware.com/info?id=128". "
Click OK to continue, Cancel to power off.

    And finally this (msg3):

«An error has occurred causing a virtual CPU go into the stop State.» If this anomaly had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine restart. The stop State are accessible by properly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system or a problem in VMware Workstation.
Click OK to restart the virtual machine or Cancel to turn off the virtual machine. »

I cannot explain the last error message and don't know what to do.

After specifying msg2, I found information about possible problems in dual-boot environments, caused by different drivers for the IDE controller.

So I tried to change the access mode to S - ATA AHCI HARD drive to S - ATA IDE in the BIOS to solve the problem.

Unfortunately, I have had no success on this operation, because the error message appeared again, once I restarted the VM.

Sorry, but I have no idea what goes wrong.

In fact, I don't know what VMware workstation wants to do, when you install the system on a disc/physical partition to have direct access to the local hard disk.

Because I don't see even the first screen of Windows Setup, there must be something wrong.

Underlying product system issues and if it's a primary or logical partition?

    Need a complete unformated HDD?

Only selected partitions are accessible within the virtual machine?

Is the system installed itself on the selected partitions?

Maybe some experienced users can help.

    Your help is welcome!

    Thank you.

First I use a raw disk to install Windows XP from a virtual machine, but if I had an existing installation, I would add the partition as a raw to be executed with a VM disk.

Here's what I'd do...  Install Windows XP to a normal file based virtual machine, and then add a second disk as a raw disk with the partitions you want to join.  That's assuming that you really need not where what to start Windows XP natively and the physical partitions that access are used for data.  Also if need be add the raw disk as IDE.

  • Can I use a SATA drive in the virtual host as a SCSI disk in virtual machine?

I'm under (64-bit) 2008 R2 RC as host and VMware Workstation 6.5.2. I installed a linux VM, the distribution doesn't really matter, but now I use Debian 5.01 AMT64. I am trying to use SATA drives to the host as drive virtual in the VM, but not successful. Here's what I did.

-In the virtual machine of VMware Workstation. Add - & gt; hard drive - & gt; use a physical disk - & gt; Choose the device (use entire disk) - & gt; Finishing

The drive is affected as IDE drive. Here's the first question, I can use it as a SCSI drive? There are only 4 available in CD-ROM and VM IDE drive takes one. I want to be able to use 10 disks.

-L' use above configuration, if I start the VM, I don't know where devices are. I can't find any device in the name of/dev/hda, / dev/hdb etc.

Here is my second question. Where are the devices on a virtual computer that were created as virtual disks?

    Hello

    with 2 k 3, you won't have these problems.

VMware affect physical as IDE disks if the host sees as IDE. He attributes as SCSI host sees the SATA or SCSI drives.

If you want to change that - you can use this old post of mine. If the descriptor of uncertain post before use you it so that I make the changes.

  • PERC 710 add physical disks for RAID 5 virtual disk and keep data

I think to set up a physical disk 4 RAID 5 array on my new PowerEdge T320.  That should give me enough space to last long.  I have two empty slots of HD.  If I need more space, later, I'll be able to add one or two additional physical disks without losing the data already on the virtual disk?  If so, how?  I don't see a way to do this in the manual of Perc 710.

    Thank you

    Andrew

Yes, it is "doable" later.  This can be done in the PERC BIOS, but it can be done in OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) within the OS.

One thing to keep in mind is the limit of 2 TB "floppy" Windows on BIOS systems compatible.  If you plan to 4x4TB disks in a RAID 10, that TB ~ 8 'disc' will be converted to the GPT and BIOS UEFI boot mode value.

  • Difference between file system capacity and the capacity of the disks in Capacity Planner reports

    Hello

I had to go on my Capacity Planner tool training soon, but I have a question on the front that frustrates me. In the evaluation report that comes out of the tool after the analysis, a use of disc section, which lists all the servers for analysis there. A column of this report is directed to file system capacity, another disk capacity. In all cases, the first is less than the latter. What is the exact meaning of these labels?

Some of the numbers differ substantially between the columns, for example 20 GB for a capacity of 36 GB of disk space for a server and file system. He said that only 20 GB to 36 GB disk is formatted/partitioned to use?

    As previously stated:

Disk capacity is 36 GB - physically, there are 36 GB of storage.

File system is logical capacity - the amount of space used by files on the disks.

File system and the capacity of the disks will never match because fees General table of file.

    I hope this helps.

    Am I missing something

When you add a hard drive of the virtual machine, you must select "Use a physical disk (for advanced users)" and note the last part "(pour les utilisateurs expérimentés) '!"

You must also at least remove the drive letter for drive in Windows 7, before she mounts to VMware Player.

or I have to upgrade to the full version?

VMware Player, either for Windows or Linux, is a full version of himself he and does not come in versions of function of different type in itself.

Wouldn't not on the same + (ABOVE)?  Alternatively, use a disk full-fledged, disk4 (ext3 file system)?

    Thank you

    Scott

First of all, the reason for multiplexing online redo logs and control files is not the same as that of multiplexing archivelogs. Do it online and the control file are actually a part of the database.  The database will not work without them.  This is why it is so important to have multiplex.  Archivelogs, on the other hand, are part of your backup strategy.  The database itself really doesn't care if you have any archivelogs at all.  The archivelogs multiplexing is much less common.  I have never multiplexed mine, but I do not have a task that runs every hour to copy any newly created on a server off-site.

If your database is on ASM, at least a control file and a member of each group of redo log must be in ASM.  Technically, is not having to be, but it's really foolish not to do so.  Where to put the second copy?  Probably several schools of thought on this.  If your FRA is on ext3, so it seems a simple decision... a FRA copy, a copy in its default location in ASM.

  • For the binary cache as a BLOB or file system?

I posted this question of AIR on the Flex forum, which did not get much attention, so now I try here which seems more ideal.

    My question in detail:

Would it be best to store binary files (Images and SWF files) as blobs in the database or to have a URI pointing to them on the user the system of files?

I am above all a Developer Flex, which did not have much time to development of databases, but realizes there is 2 options to be taken for the storage of binary files in an AIR application.  Given that I have not been exposed to the db development I'm not sure which is the best way.

You are right there are two options, and they are both commonly used.

Storage on the file system is a little easier to implement for many and can be a little more proformant with less coding and decoding in progress.  But he has an increased risk of problems of syncornazation since there are many ways for objects of file to be modified, moved, or deleted without changing anything and the database.  Thus, we should build logic that will check the existence of the file at the level of the URI before trying to serve.

Store the file in the database reduces the problems with syncornazation.  But it takes a little longer to implement and could involve much more data in the database itself, which may or may not be a problem depending on the configuration.

But either is a choice of acceptiable and a little work with the various advantages and disadvantages of a.
