Can I use a SATA drive in the virtual host as a SCSI disk in virtual machine?

I'm under (64-bit) 2008 R2 RC as host and VMware Workstation 6.5.2. I installed a linux VM, the distribution doesn't really matter, but now I use Debian 5.01 AMT64. I am trying to use SATA drives to the host as drive virtual in the VM, but not successful. Here's what I did.

-In the virtual machine of VMware Workstation. Add - & gt; hard drive - & gt; use a physical disk - & gt; Choose the device (use entire disk) - & gt; Finishing

The drive is affected as IDE drive. Here's the first question, I can use it as a SCSI drive? There are only 4 available in CD-ROM and VM IDE drive takes one. I want to be able to use 10 disks.

-L' use above configuration, if I start the VM, I don't know where devices are. I can't find any device in the name of/dev/hda, / dev/hdb etc.

Here is my second question. Where are the devices on a virtual computer that were created as virtual disks?

Hello

with 2 k 3, you won't have these problems.

VMware affect physical as IDE disks if the host sees as IDE. He attributes as SCSI host sees the SATA or SCSI drives.

If you want to change that - you can use this old post of mine. If the descriptor of uncertain post before use you it so that I make the changes.

    ESX3.5U4/VC2.5 - move vmdk to adequate data store and extend the drive on the virtual machine

    Objective: move vmdk to store data with adequate storage and then increase storage D: 20G to 100G

    Converter is not available on this architecture. Can I migrate cold vm to the different data store, no prob.

    Question: Without use of the converter, method 3 can be used without a secondary vm? In other words, just by using target vm offline, online, offline? Or is it a problem of signing/OS disk on the Windows Virtual PC?

    I need to move vmdk in different LUN and extend drive vm windows on D: (non-OS drive). Is this possible via the single procedure? Options?

    To use method 3 to http://communities.vmware.com/thread/81121 requires available vm 'secondary', I did not.

    Method 3? Using of vmkfstools and another VM of Windows to extend a drive

    o stop the VM to resize

    o log in the console ESX Server via Putty

    o Type? vmkfstools? X & lt; new size of drive & gt; vmfs/volumes / & lt; storage volume name & gt;. / & lt; virtual server name & gt;. / & lt; the virtual disk name & gt;? That is to say. /vmfs/volumes/Storage1/my_vm.VMDK new disk size can be specified in kilo, mega, or gigabytes and will be the total size of the new disk. So if you want to increase a virtual disk of 20 GB of 24GO you would put 24000 m or 24g

    o the second virtual machine to help stop

    o change the second virtual machine settings and add the first virtual machine hard drive

    o power on the second VM and load the disk management snap-in and verify that the first virtual machine disk has unallocated on it space

    o select Start, run and enter diskpart.exe

    o the command? the list of volume? This will show you all the volumes.

    o select your volume based on the results of the list volume command, IE. ? Select volume 1?

    o type the command? extend? to extend the volume

    o check again the disk management snap-in and the volume is expected to be expanded with a greater ability

    o stop the second VM and remove (do not remove) the record of it

    o turn your first VM and the new space should be there and ready to use.

    http://support.Dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us & CS = 19 & l = in & s = DHS & ReleaseID = R64398 & formatcnt = 2 & starts = 83929

    for VI3, vmoiton of storage is made by RCLI plugin or a 3rd party

    I prefer the plugin

    http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/articles-tutorials/VMware-ESX-articles/VMotion-DRS-high-availability/storage-VMotion-SVMotion-VI-plugin.html

    In addition, if the option to increase the size of the disk in the VIC is grayed out, it sounds like a permissions issue.  Finally, you can not extend the disc using the VIC, if the customer in question has a snapshot.

  • How to share between the host drive and the virtual machine in the car?

    I wanted to use my virtual XP to print using my old printer that the printer driver can only support XP. But I can't find a way to link my host and the virtual drive, because my file is located in the host drive.

    1 change the settings of the virtual machine

    2. go to the Options tab

    3. Select shared folders

    4. Select always enabled

    5 Add the folder that you want to use

    6. Select map as a network drive in Windows prompt

  • CLI can be used to assign AD accounts to virtual machines

    Hi, I am interested in the possibility to use the CLI to assign accounts Active Directory for VMs. currently there are 10 virtual machines created from a template and there are 22:00. 1 AD account is assigned to each of the virtual machines. They are used for training purposes. Virtual machines are then removed and repeat the procedure. Is it possible that I can attribute the AD account name to a particular virtual machine using the command line?

    Thank you

    You can use the new-vipermission to assign permissions to a virtual machine.

    I tried to increase disk vmdk file to another 20Gb.When D: I went to change the setting, the option to increase the size of the disk is grayed out.

    In Edit framework I have seen

    Vitual machine version: 4

    type of thick disk configuration

    size of 25GB available

    Maximum S/o

    Please let me know if there is an option to increase the size of vmdk file.

    have you created a snapshot of the virtual machine? If there is a snapshot, you are not able to extend the disks of the virtual machine.

    Are you unable to extend all or only the road d disks? I have had this a few times and the only way to extend the drive was by turn off the virtual machine. Never understood why it was.

  • Can I use two hard drives in the Qosmio G40-10th

    Anyone know if it is possible to install two hard drives in this laptop. I read simewhere that it had to be two slots hard drive in it?
    If so where is it located?
    Ther would be all issues around extra heat that could be generated etc.?

    I have had mine for about 5/6 months and have had a screen replaced (defective backlight).
    Many other people have had problems?

    I wonder if its worth buy the extended warranty.

    See you soon.
    Sunil

    Hello

    As far as I know this laptop takes support only a single HARD disk.
    Check the underside of the laptop. Do you see a second slot (cover) the second HDD?
    I imagine that it has a single HARD drive Bay, and so only a single HARD disk can be used.

    I m not a G40 owner and, therefore, I cannot comment on any other issue.
    But each computer technology may start to malfunction it is why I always recommend buying an extended warranty.

    Best regards

  • Can I use 2 hard drives on the Satellite A200-1YX

    Hello, who knows if it can work 2 hard drives on the A200 1YX.
    In the manual is written there are 2 locations for hard drives, but it says that for some models of Satellite A200.

    Can I use 2 HDD on Satellite A200-1YX?

    As mentioned by user above, different Satellite A200 series are present on the market.
    Some supports 2 hard drives and some as a single HARD drive.

    But both series are equipped with a second Bay I recommend you simply remove the cover plastic that holds the second HARD drive Bay and check if the HARD drive connectors are available.

    Good bye

  • Windows 8 can't find my SATA drive (2). It does not appear in disk management, but it appear when I open the tab of properties on any drive and click displays all disks. What should do?

    I bought a new computer (custom build) and Frys Electronics put it together for me.  Disk 0 is a 128 GB SSD, 1 disk is a SATA 2 TB drive, and disc 2 is a 1 TB SATA drive. Readers of 0 and 1 have been configured correctly when I installed Windows 8 but Drive 1 was not found\initialized. Player 2 does not appear in the disk management window, but when I click on properties on any drive, and then on the "hardware" tab, the drive appears.  If I can get windows to find it, I can go configure manually.  DiskPart cannot find disc 2 in the 'LIST' command and when I get in car 2 on other commands that require a number of disc, nothing happens.

    What should I do?

    Thank you.

    I ran an old Western Digital (the two SATA drives are WD) diagnosis and there are 1 OK to drive.  I tested it and it doesn't have a writing that test a few zeros.  I thought that it was a bad drive and I must return to the seller.  The next morning I tried the WD diagnosis again and this time he passed.  The app then allowed me to format it and it assign a drive letter.

    It seems to be OK now, but I'm not load all the files on it again.

    Thank you all for your support.

  • Navigate to the bootcamp drive, while the virtual machine is open

    I have VMWare Fusion 3.1, use it on a Windows 7 64-bit bootcamp.

    I need to access my Mac OS player - sometimes even when I run (play?) the merger virtual machine.  The drive disappears from the Finder when it runs.  Can I change this?

    Hello

    No you can't change it.

    A single operating system can directly access a system of files at a time unless it is a clustered file system.

    Like any normal filesystems like NTFS/FAT/etc... are clustered, you cannot do so.

    The answer to that is to share your files via network shares.

  • Cultivate the hard drive for the virtual machine fails but customer VI indicates successful operation

    I tried to cultivate a 1 TB drive of 100 GB on a block size of 8 MB LUN with still 117 GB of free space. I thought that 17 GB of free space would be sufficient.

    I had a successful operation task in VI Client after resizing this vmdk to 100 GB, BUT no real changes.

    I tried adding 50 GB (117 GB of free) and the same result.

    Only when I tried to increase 20 GB, then it worked fine.

    QUESTION:

    What is the percentage of disk space must be available on the LUN to cultivate a vmdk to 1 TB? It is a percentage of the vmdk file?

    Why the VI Client would be a successful operation, but no change?

    Your help is most appreciated.

    Thank you

    Bottom line first: you won't be able to easily overcome.

    The reason is the large block size.  If you choose blocks of 8 MB, that's fine, but the trade-off is that even if a sub-block is used, the entire block is considered as unavailable for growth.  So, you have the space wasted in many of your blocks of 8MB.  It is considered as free, then you think you have enough space to grow, but in reality, there is very little, if any, blocks that are completely empty.   Unfortunately, there is no easy way to "squeeze" the blocks and/or move the white space in the 'clean' for growth blocks.

    A lot of people think 8 MB is the way to go and use it all the time.  Not the case.  As with most things, there is a trade-off space-time.  Personally, I use 1 MB of size; It is a good choice of 'medium', memory load balancing and free space.

    For myself, I don't have if worry VMFS, increasingly because if my store of data starts to be complete, I just grow on the fly with my Xiotech.  Can't use VI at all.

  • Support ESXi 5.0 host FC connected tape drives in the virtual machine running symantec backup exec 2012

    Dear Experts,

    We recently purchased C0H19A: StoreEver HP 1/8 G2 6 - LTO Ultrium 6250 CF TapeAutoloader. The purpose is to backup of VMS data, I mean selected data in virtual machines, as for the exchange of data bases email for server accounts database SQL server etc.. We have a full VM backup plan, so using symantec backup exec software.

    We have this configuration:

    -TWO DL 380 Gen8 servers (running UPDATE2 Esxi 5.0), both servers have not all SCSI ports

    -One SINGLE HP P2000 G2 MSA FC Dual Cntrl storage

    -TWO HP SN6000 12 - pt Windows Pwr FC switch

    -HP ADF

    All them above are related to the CF. Symantec backup exec 2012 is also installed on Windows 2008 R2, which is a virtual machine.

    But now, we are unable to see the tape library autoloader through the virtualization layer in the device of machine Manager virtual backup exec. Reading on internet, I also found some details that connected FC tape drives are not supported by the Esxi hosts. We are really stuck in this situation, all the solutions to this. I also read the article from vmware saying configuration for Esxi 4.0 FC tape drives and later versions

    Installation of a physical server windows with Backup Exec 2012 and HBA and connected to above switches FC is the only way to see the ADF? Even after reading articles on the internet, I'm not clear, please guide what solution I have now to get this thing going, I really need to find solution to this.

    Waiting for answers.

    Kind regards

    Hello, I'm a Backup Exec support engineer and yes the method supported is only by connecting the tape drive to a server of physical media. See the introduction in the Backup Exec HCL on Configurations of http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH175582 and http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH146293 alternative

  • Problem using cdromdisconnect.pl to check for the use of CD-ROM on the virtual machines

    I have a problem with this script, cdromdisconnect.pl and I was hoping someone could help me with it...

    When I run ' cdromdisconnect.pl - my.esx.host - host list op - my.vc.host - server passthroughauth ", I get a"Host not found my.esx.host." But when I run "datacenterlisting.pl - datacenter MyDC" there 'my.esx.host' very well. Am I missing something here? Why is the cdrom script not able to find hosts when other scripts have no problem?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    -monkeedu

    As far as I KNOW, there isn't a way to do a review on a MoRef, right on the property values.  You cannot, for example, match against a property value of the table.  You have to adapt your script logic.  Once you have your view of system host ($host), then you must use the vm ($host-> vm) property to get a list of Virtual Machines.

    You will probably need to change:

    my $host_moRef = $host->{mo_ref}{value};
    #######################################################################################
    # Get all VMs that are currently running on that ESX Server
    #######################################################################################

    my $vm_views = Vim::find_entity_views(view_type => 'VirtualMachine', filter => {'runtime.host' => $host_moRef});
    my $numDevices = 0;
    foreach my $vm_view (@$vm_views) {

    TO:

    #######################################################################################
    # Get all VMs that are currently running on that ESX Server
    #######################################################################################

    my $numDevices = 0;
    my $vm_view;
    foreach (@{$host->vm}) {
         $vm_view = Vim::get_view( mo_ref => $_ );

    There are some optimizations I can suggest to speed it up, but its probably better to work first.

  • Monitoring VM - how to restart the virtual machine

    Hi all

    Hit a problem in our environment that can not be solved, but wanted to tender hand to people and see if they have found a way to replace.

    Currently have followed vm enabled in our cluster. Thing is watching us to restart the virtual machine VMware tools demonstrated to a status of "not running" - now, the key is to most of the definitions, the system is available in this case, can be crazy, RDP'ed etc, but we here again them restarted as he finally solves the issue we see (for example unable to connect via citrix for the machines in question)

    Duncan in the post below highlights in order to avoid false positives any i/o to storage/network activity will be verified after that heatbeats failed to "double check" there is a problem with the virtual machine

    Favorite VM monitoring (aka VM HA) - yellow bricks

    What I asked is it possible to replace verification of network storage/IO activity and then restart the virtual machine VMware tools on them stops as soon as?

    Many tx for all thoughts

    «.. . is there a way to replace check network activity of storage/IO and then restart the virtual machine of VMware tools on them stops as soon as...? »

    You can always use a supervision-process inside the virtual machine for this tool (perhaps more followed VM). It acts independently and allows much finer control, i.e. it can try first (re) start vm-tools before restarting. Same BSOD /-kernel panic can be dealt with by VM itself. It can actually be even more robust, not dependent on VMware infrastructure.
