disk cleanup does not start 'Microsoft has encountered an error.

I am running Win XP Pro SP3.  I tried to do a disk cleanup.  I tried to go through system tools and also start, run the cleanmgr.  Neither one would go.  I get the standard Microsoft window that says an error has occurred and I would like to send a report.  I tried running malware analysis and restart also. Any ideas?

I'm sorry, that I couldn't find useful on this topic.  For the most part, the suggestion is either give up and download/install Ccleaner or to extract a new copy of cleanmgr.exe.  The latter usually does not have contributed.

CCleaner is a good utility, but if you go this route, do not use record cleaning option.

The current version of cleanmgr.exe, which should be located in C:\Windows\system32, is 6.00.2900.5512 that there should be a copy of the same version of the file in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386.  On my XP Pro system, I have an earlier version 6.0.2900.2180, C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstal$ and I have 'the original' in compressed form in C:\i386 (this is the version 6.0.2600.0).

I saw a suggestion of semi-utile troubleshooting in the latest post (LasseA123) here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/789412-disccleanup-will-not-run-2.html note, however, that the problem discussed in this thread was in Vista, and that the two keys under this says LasseA123 caused his problem are not present in XP.  If you follow the suggestion here and actually isolate the problem to one or two subkeys, include this information in the post that I am proposing in the next paragraph.

My only suggestion is to start a new thread, either here, most likely in the Forum of Technet XP3: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/itproxpsp/threads with the subject 'Event 1000 Cleanmgr ID' and focus on the disciplines that you pasted here.  If you try to replace the current copy of the cleanmgr.exe with one or more of the files in the location I mentioned above but still have the problem, include this information in your message as well.

    "Lightroom has encountered an error during playback of he is seen hiding and must leave" appears when trying to open LR 5.7 after laptop crashed.

    Hi Adobemun,

    Seems that your preview cache is corrupt.

    You must go to the location where your catalog is stored and get rid of Previews.lrdata (not .lrcat file) then, launch Lightroom and it would recreate the previews itself.

  • Products of disk cleanup does not not to remove older restore points

    Hi, I use Vista Home Premium sp2, and although I had this problem for a long time, I barely had time to ask about it.

    I have a separate drive (physically) for my backup/restore points, whenever it fills the only way I can do anything or is to format the drive and try again. Both Vista and CCleaner fail to create a disk space when asked to remove older restore points. There is no error message; They seem to work, but no free space appears on the disc.

    In fact, the only software that I can remember that actually create any space by deleting old restore points was the Norton AV that was shipped with the system, but it was on a limited license that has expired for a long time.

    All the advice to avoid the trouble of formatting the hard drive and create a new backup from scratch would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello

    I think you're confused of Restore Points and backups of your files or a backup of the operating system image.

    Restore Points, who put your computer's settings back to an earlier point in time, are saved on your system, C: drive, not on another drive.

    Backups of files or System Image backups you save to other media; an another hard drive, etc.

    Disk Cleanup and CCleaner does not remove files or backups of the system; You must do it manually.

    See you soon.

    Hello

    When I run Disk Cleanup it guides me through the usual screens, but then when I get started doing 'clean up' I get no additional screens, notifications, popups, etc.  Yet, when I go in manually to check, figures show that he has released a lot of space, etc.  Why is there no notification saying "Cleanup Complete" or similar, as with most other scanning procedures, downloads, etc. etc. ???

    Disk cleanup has silent modes of execution. Each cleaner is a separate program. Dialog boxes would hinder operation.

    Hello

    This could happen if the startup for Windows Vista file is affected when you formatted the partition containing Linux. You can first try running the Startup Repair tool, if this does not help then you can try to rebuild the BCD (Boot Configuration data).

    Note: you can perform the steps only if you have the Windows Vista installation disc.

    Method 1:

    Run the Startup Repair tool by booting from the installation DVD. Follow the link to do the same.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/startup-repair-frequently-asked-questions

    Method 2:

    Rebuild the BCD using the Windows Vista installation disc and check if that helps to start the desktop. Follow the link to do the same.

  • disk cleanup does not add any free space on a local disk C

    Windows 7 has been reinstalled and nothing seems to just I have 750 GB hard disk, but it shows only 698. I use disk cleanup, but free space is never added to a local drive C before windows 7 has been reinstalled I would delete system restore points and free space is always added to C Local dell drive replaced the hard drive and the motherboard. is there a way to check why no free space has been added and why I only show 698 GB when I have 750 I jump someone has an answer

    There are things which never appear even though you have set to see hidden and system folders.  There is a free program called Treesize that you can download from http://www.download.com which will show you everything on your hard drive.  One thing about the 750 GB 698 vs.  People judge 1000 K, but windows account in binary, which means that a K is 1024.  So when count you in decimal, you will get the 750 000 000, but in binary, it's less.

    Good luck.

  • Additional HARD disk, PC does not start.

    I'm under a Dimension 9200 on Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.

    I just bought a 1 TB Western Digital Caviar Green Power drive.  I plugged on one of the locations additional sata on the motherboard and pc market.  I have an IDE installed RAID card normally shows directly after the dell logo, and detects my old three disks IDE and their config raid which is fine.

    Reference Dell also provided me with two drives of 320 GB in a raid configuration, using my C drive, which he would then normally detect.  However, when the new drive is connected it just displays an error message, something can not find bios.  I have not disconnected or changed their cables somehow.

    When I disconnect the new drive again, the pc boots fine.

    I tried to enter in the configuration with the drive connected to change the boot sequence, but it won't let me enter the configuration.  I can enter the installer without a connection, and I assured my normal C drive is the first boot drive, but it still does not work.

    I'm not trying to add it to one of the raid configs current sport im, I want just that he's a player, I thought that it would be virtually plug-in, turn on, format and leave, but no luck!

    Someone made me what I am doing wrong?

  • OS does not start and screen with the error (root) system32\hal.dll windows is damaged or missing black

    I was trying to stop some HP programs to start when I start my desktop computer. I did the following: start > run > msconfig.  Click on startup and unchecked HP four applications. Restarted my desktop computer and immediately had a black screen with the following message:

    The window could not start because the following file is missing or damaged:

    system32\hal.dll

    Please reinstall a copy of the above file

    I can't do anything in Safe Mode or one of the other options. Cannot re - install Windows XP Home Edition because Windows or Internet Explorer 8 will not run. Only the black screen and the message mentioned above.

    I use a desktop Dell Dimension 8400 computer.

    [2] I still need to download site driver Dell trying to correct this "floppy seek failure pilot 1,2 and 3 not found: ATX, SATA 1, 2 and 3' problem"

    [3] I just got e-mail from Microscoft response that the thread that I created has been deleted, so I answer to you of a past replica.

    Wanted [4] Thank you for your time and patience to help me. Is there something else to do for me, you can recommend?

    A1. Wise move IMHO. The computer seems "snappier" now?

    A2. I can't imagine that another owner of a Dimension 8400 (or 4800?) has not encountered this problem before. Discover (i.e., search) the Dell office equipment forum: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514.aspx. If necessary, start your own new thread (registration required).

    A3. If you start another thread on the computer, I have posted a reply to this & you asked to publish a follow-up replies to your original thread. [?]

    A4. Welcome & thank you for your comments.

    In fact, there is something else you may need to do: it turns out that KB2607712 is replaced by the KB2616676 in Vista & Win7; Windows XP needs to have both installed [despite the mention you referred in your post on September 14, above] !!!

    => So if Update for Windows XP (KB2607712) is NOT listed in Add/Remove Programs, you will need to manually download/install a revised version [long story, involved - you don't want to know]:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ACTIONS:
    1. open Internet Explorer to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27244 & click on the button CONTINUE.
    2. after VALIDATION, download the installer for KB2607712 & save it to your desktop - NOT run again!
    3. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).
    4. double-click on the file that you saved in #2 above to install the update. Follow all the instructions (reboot required).
    5. check that the Update for Windows XP (KB2607712) is now listed in Add/Remove programs.
  • access to the "My Documents" folder on the HARD disk that does not start
    Recently, I got 2 hard drives put in place into a monster of table (SATA) on me. I had an IDE hdd hooked that I had just never deleted. My "mirrored array' failed me so I ended up replacing my MB & CPU and started from scratch. The IDE hard disk has some very relevant info, I need to recover. I can get to basic files in there, but my most important stuff is in my folder 'My Documents' but as far as I can get is to open "Documents & settings". Another thing I try to open fails. I made a password but have no way to enter (at least AFAIK), I would appreciate greatly any help on this problem. Thank you
  • Hard Drive C full disk cleanup does not
    My hard drive C has been fine for a long time.  Then all of a sudden in a period of about a year he started fill by itself.  I would deal with the problem with the disk cleaning and remove programs and files is no longer needed, but every time I did that it would end up a bit more than before (it would mean 40%, then fill up to 65%, then disk clean he would stay to 45% full).
    Now, I have 110 MB of space on a 30 GB C drive, and I've done everything I can.  I ran thousands of times drive cleanup, I have eliminated all the programs that I don't use, and I transferred all my music and movies on my D drive (which is fine).
    I ran several scans, but there seems to be no worm.  I can't do system restore because I did a restore a year ago.
    Is there something I can do, or is editing and re - install Vista my only option?
    Hello
    To add to the view of Mick.
    Look with in the settings of your programs to change to the D drive. You can also copy existing data to D:, just copy it and make sure everything is OK before you delete it on C: and make a backup.
    You can also delete the D: partition and enlarge your C: driver. (Save anything from D: first)
    Then you can continue to use the machine you are now. (Are backups and restore points on D:)
    If so they will have to be changed if you delete D: entirely.)
