Disk Cleanup utility

What boxes more people check off the power when you use the disk cleanup utility (cleaning disc for (c :)))? When I use it, three boxes are checked by default. They are Downloaded program Files, temporary Internet files and thumbnails. All the rest are unchecked. Any of you use the other boxes in good standing?

Thank you

TomS

A new feature has been added to cleaning disc in October 2013, which is not available in cCleaner. You must change the existing settings to take advantage of the new feature. Type Disk Cleanup in the search above the Start button box and press ENTER. Click OK and after the calculation of space, you will see a window with a list of files to delete. Use the right-hand scroll bar to see the entries hidden further down the list. Check the boxes in front of the backup of the Service Pack files and cleaning of Windows Update and click OK you will see savings every time after Windows has been updated, but they are not as important when it is run after the first time. You must restart the computer to complete the process.

cCleaner is an alternative tool / extra:

This should clear the air: _ http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Windows_Errors/WebClient_Publisher_Temporary_Files: _How_to_delete_them.html

And 32 KB is a VERY tiny part of the hard disk.

  • Disk Cleanup utility fails

Just installed Windows 7 over the weekend.  I can't wait to get rid of the files installation taking up a lot of hard drive space, and I read that you use the disk cleanup utility.  Unfortunately, no matter how I try to start it, it crashes almost immediately, I think it begins to analyze the previous installation files.

Am I the only one?  Any ideas on what she chokes on?  Thank you.

    Hello ckniess,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft answers community.

You must share your results for your solution of disk cleanup.

You should be able to accomplish the Windows.old armel deletion CMD:

    ·          Click on Start Orb > type cmd in the search box > right-click on cmd in the results above > click on run as administrator

Since you just want to delete Windows.old with everything from your installation of vista, try the following commands:

    ·          At the command prompt, you type simply C:\Windows.old RMDIR /s /q

This should permanently delete the Windows.old folder and everything below.

    Hope this helps

the utility disk cleanup on my laptop has authorized the necessary files, a lot of films and documents on mine and my disks hard partners, how to restore these? Help, please!

Hi Jess, this article will be may be of interest:

That explains how to unzip the files (if all goes well, they're still on your system). It is not a feature I used with XP.

Otherwise if this does not help, then back for backups.

  • I need to recover files I deleted everything by making a disk cleanup.

I did a disk clean up using the 'Other Options' tab.  After completed cleaning, I discovered the calculator function, the system restore and other files have been deleted.  Is it possible to restore these files?  I have Windows XP.

    Hi dollimae,

There is no option to recover files deleted by the disk cleanup utility. However we recommend to check the trash to see if all the files listed there. If so, then restore them.

  • Disk Cleanup is not showing me the ability to clean the system error memory dump files

Hello. When I run the disk cleanup utility in Vista, it does not show the option of cleaning the system error memory dump files. It is a very serious problem. I had to delete files that I really wanted to keep, because I thought they were taking too much space. He did not make a particle of difference. I have only two GB on my C drive now. How to fix this problem?

    Kim

You must use the scroll bar on the right disk cleanup in the window that appears after checking for space to scroll to check the boxes before these items.

Deleting the less important system restore points allows you to earn useful free disk space.

A better program of disk cleanup is cCleaner. Delete System Restore points may be important if you have little free disk space. The ability to delete them is one of the tools options. You can selectively remove those created in less important moments.

cCleaner also comes with a registry tool. Do not use this tool as any registry cleaner could lead to the creation of very difficult to resolve system errors.

  • No previous "Facilities Windows" option in disk cleanup

I want to remove the folder Windows.old of my C drive because it takes up to 5 gigabytes of space, but when I go in the disk cleanup utility, there is no "Previous Installations of Windows" option to check. Is there a problem with just delete Windows.old directly?

I suggest you to follow the steps in the link given below and check if it helps.

  • Folder of Windows/Install Clean or update install Cleanup Utility

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and my folder C:/Windows/Installer is 21 GB.  I googled how to clean safely this folder but all answers point to Installer Cleanup Utility.  I found this note on the site which provided the program download "Windows Installer Cleanup (MSICUU2.exe) utility that was previously referred to as in this article resolved a few installation problems but sometimes cause problems with other programs or components installed on the computer. For this reason, the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center. "Is there a solution to update?

Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows Installer Cleanup utility and removed from its server to download because, according to Microsoft "while the utility Windows Installer Cleanup fixed some installation issues, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer."

I didn't know all the information about the "other components" were damaged or under what circumstances, but I guess someone, something had some time, fool you.

However, you can still get the Installer Cleanup utility, including the utility msizap.exe (which is packed with the Installer Cleanup utility but is not the same thing), http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html

If you want to be ultra careful, get you the imagery of disk or disk cloning software to backup (which is A good thing to have in any case) and create a complete backup of the drive before using the program installation Cleanup Utility or msizap.  In this way, if anything goes wrong in fact, you can restore your system from backup.

  • disk cleanup does not start 'Microsoft has encountered an error.

I am running Win XP Pro SP3.  I tried to do a disk cleanup.  I tried to go through system tools and also start, run the cleanmgr.  Neither one would go.  I get the standard Microsoft window that says an error has occurred and I would like to send a report.  I tried running malware analysis and restart also. Any ideas?

I'm sorry, that I couldn't find useful on this topic.  For the most part, the suggestion is either give up and download/install Ccleaner or to extract a new copy of cleanmgr.exe.  The latter usually does not have contributed.

CCleaner is a good utility, but if you go this route, do not use record cleaning option.

The current version of cleanmgr.exe, which should be located in C:\Windows\system32, is 6.00.2900.5512 that there should be a copy of the same version of the file in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386.  On my XP Pro system, I have an earlier version 6.0.2900.2180, C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstal$ and I have 'the original' in compressed form in C:\i386 (this is the version 6.0.2600.0).

I saw a suggestion of semi-utile troubleshooting in the latest post (LasseA123) here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/789412-disccleanup-will-not-run-2.html note, however, that the problem discussed in this thread was in Vista, and that the two keys under this says LasseA123 caused his problem are not present in XP.  If you follow the suggestion here and actually isolate the problem to one or two subkeys, include this information in the post that I am proposing in the next paragraph.

My only suggestion is to start a new thread, either here, most likely in the Forum of Technet XP3: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/itproxpsp/threads with the subject 'Event 1000 Cleanmgr ID' and focus on the disciplines that you pasted here.  If you try to replace the current copy of the cleanmgr.exe with one or more of the files in the location I mentioned above but still have the problem, include this information in your message as well.
