Disk Defragmenter does not not on MY Windows 7 (64-bit)
Hi, I have not been able to defragment my new laptop of the I received (4 days ago)... The software works, and when I say analyze or defragment the completion % is displayed, but the report never comes... I never see how much there is fragmentation on the hard drive... I never get a report after analysis or defragmentation...
Any help is greatly appreciated...
Type Disk Defragmenter in the search box above the Start button and press ENTER. What do you see?
When Disk Defragmenter is then scheduled to run? When it was last run and what was the percent fragmentation?
Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
Since I started using Norton, Disk Defragmenter does not work and my computer is very slow. How can I me Defrag to work and to speed up my computer?
There are 2 issues here:
1 Defragmenter does not
2 PC is slow.
If the disk is very fragmented, it can cause the PC to run poorly, so let's handle defrag first and then we can look at the additional steps to speed it up.
There are several reasons why the built-in Defragmenter may not work correctly:
1. the disk is too full (you need at least 15% free space, sometimes 20%). Solution: Delete files unnecessary and programs until you have more than 20% free space.
2. the disc is damaged and must be repaired. Solution:
a. open "My computer" and right-click on the drive that you want to disable frag.
b. Select 'Properties' and click on 'tools '.
c. Select "Check now" to check the drive for errors.
d. Select the two options and click on 'start '.
(This can take time and can restart the PC so that it can do the check at boot time. Be patient and let it complete).
3. There may be malware on the PC
Solution - run the Antivrus, then Antispyware scans (can take a long time if ever made. Be patient):
a. analysis of the entire system with the anti-virus & manage everything that exists;
b. analysis of the entire system with Anti-Spyware & manage everything that exists;
4. Disk Defragmenter can be altered, needing a system restore to fix it. Solution:
a. start - all programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore (click here to open);
b. Select a good restore point before you start having problems with Disk Defragmenter.
c. start the restore process and let an end (descriptive name of something restore operation as "Repair Defrag").
5. There are other programs that run the Defragmenter interruption integrated. Solution:
a. close all running programs.
b. If you think there may be some programs that run in the background.
c. press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and
d. Select "start Task Manager".
e. under the 'Applications' tab, you will find a list of all running applications - you can close these by selecting "end task."
6. If still no luck, try disabling the screen saver when you run Disk Defrag (you should very well leave the system only when running the built-in defragmentation utility).
7. If still no go, try to run the defragmenter in Mode without failure. If she runs, something interferes with it in standard mode and stalking the interference may not be easy. Note: Some versions of Windows 7 disables the ability to run the Defragmenter built-in in safe mode. If disabled, it will say when you try to start it in safe mode.
8. Disk Defragmenter may no longer be on the system or is damaged while it needs a re - install. Solution: Reinstall the built-in function.
There are several ways to re - install the built-in Defragmenter:
a. open the menu 'start '.
b. type '% Windir%\Inf' in the 'Search' box and press 'Enter '.
c. in the window that opens, find the file named "dfrg.inf.
d. right-click on "dfrg.inf" and "install".
a. go into "start > run" on your computer.
b. Type "rundll32.exe setupapi, InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132% windir%\inf\dfrg.inf" and press "Enter."
3. click 'OK' to make the program automatically reinstall itself.
a. go to start > all programs > Accessories > right click on command prompt > select 'run as administrator '.
b. at the command prompt, type "regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll" and press "enter."
c. type 'regsvr32 dfrgui.dll' and press 'Enter '. This will reinstall the missing Defragmenter files.
Most of the problems will be resolved in #6 above, but if not and if your windows installation is otherwise works well, consider downloading a free trial of a commercial defragmentation tool rather than the drastic measures to restore the frame-s functionality.
Third-party programs are more robust and many work in the background, so you can use your PC during defragmentation.
Most third party programs offer a free, fully functional trial (better ones are for 30 days). Install one of them allows you to disable built-in and if you decide to uninstall, removal will replace the built-in function, repaired several times in the process: it's worth a try...
9 here is a recent Top 10 comments side-by-side comparison of the best available defragmentation programs:
a. Select a program and install it. The best defrag programs are automatic and the top placers in the foregoing analysis can defragment everything using the PC. Place it at the top of the page was the only defragmentation program preventing fragmentation (see comment).
b, readers to defragment your drive.
The PC should improve speed, as the above steps are performed. Here are additional steps to optimize PC for speed:
10. make sure that your PC has as much memory (RAM) as possible.
Solution - Know how much RAM your PC:
a. go to start > right click on 'Computer' > properties
b. this list the type of processor and speed and how much RAM is installed, and what version of windows is running and the Service Pack. Sign it, because it may be necessary later.
c. search your PC name and model # followed by 'memory' and see what is listed. This tells you what type of memory you need and how many "Sticks" your PC will accept.
d. get the maximum amount of memory your computer can contain and install it. Search for "how to install memory on one (your model name and #)" to find videos on how to do this if necessary.
11. make sure that the registry is clean.
Solution: Get and run a good registry cleaner.
a. check to see if there is a registry cleaner already in the system;
b. otherwise, download CCleaner here: http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/
c. run the registry cleaner until he finds and corrects any errors.
Note: Be careful with registry cleaners as there are many autour with new ones coming all the time with some would have been causing more damage than they help. Use a proven reliability.
CCleaner is one of the originals and very safe.
Once all this is done, your PC will be in the best possible shape.
Good luck and let us know if you have any questions (ask your questions and I will then answer best I can).

PS: If after all that, the PC is still not doing well, repair may involve repairing the windows installation and possibly re - install windows itself. These aren't simple solutions. If so, indicate if and guidelines can be provided.
After installing Windows 7 (Home Premium 64-bit), Disk Defragmenter does not work, Windows 7 menu, or by Accessories > system tools, or by a simple click on the .exe. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the detailed response.
The problem was in fact Norton 360 3.5, which is supposed to work with Windows 7, but who would not run its own Recovery Disk Defrag. I had a suervisor to Norton Commander remotely the computer to solve the problem, but all he managed to do was restart my computer so that I got the dreaded black screen saying "this is not a genuine copy of Windows 7". I solved that by starting in safe mode, using System Restore and then remove Norton (forever! No problem with Trend Micro). Disk Defrag eventually gave me a message that the parameters had been taken over by another program and allowed me to delete these settings. He then worked.
My Disk Defragmenter does not work... He asserts that he is defraging but the hour glass just stay there. I tried to solve by disabling the Scheduler, but I am unable to take the green check mark in the box that tells me that this scheduler is enabled... Help, please
in vista, the defragmentation process works silently in the background
you do not have to run it manually
Unfortunately in vista it does not provide a GUI to show progress as it did in xp
to do this, you'll need 3rd party defrag programs
read the comments on these FREE below defragmentation programs and choose the one that you prefer to use
Auslogics Disk Defrag is a disk defragmentation tool that supports FAT 16, FAT 32, and NTFS volumes. It defragments supply with demand automatic defrags when your system is idle and advanced options to customize the files that will be défragmentées.
UltraDefrag is an Open Source disk defragmentation tool that offers a quick Defrag, using a pilot based on the kernel. It offers a simple with a cluster map display graphical user interface, as well as command line interface and scheduling option
Puran Defrag is a Disk Defragmenter easy to use which offers start defragmentation, automatic defragmentation, intelligent directory optimization, background (low priority) operation and optimization of free space. Other features include integrated planning, automatic reboot or shutdown after defragmentation and integration with Windows Explorer to defragment individual files from the context menu. The free version is identical in functionality to the standard version (shareware), but it is limited to a private, non commercial use
Smart Defrag is a Disk Defragmenter automatically keeps your hard disk space does not become too defragemented, which may cause slower disk performance. It works continuously in the background while your computer is idle and requires no further user for basic maintenance intervention. The program also includes an option of manual defragmentation as well as support for the regular defrags and with optional file system optimization.
Disk defragmentation. will take place every week at 01:00. Computer is in "standby" at that time. Is this why disk frag does not happen every week? When I defragment manually I have to confirm the status of administrator... it would have something to do with it? I use Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.
You did it any significant hardware or change software on the computer before this problem?
I understand that disk defragmentation does not work as expected. When this works even if your computer is in "sleep". Therefore, I would suggest trying the following steps and check if the problem persists.
Step 1: Check if the Disk Defragmenter service is running.
a. click Start and type services.msc in the search box.
(b) in the Services window, double-click the Disk Defragmenter service.
c. check if the Disk Defragmenter service is set to Automatic Started .
Step 2: The question may arise also because of the intervention of third-party software. So, I suggest clean boot of the system and check if the scheduled defragmentation works.
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
Note: See "how to reset the computer to start normally after a boot minimum troubleshooting" to prepare the computer to start as usual after a repair. "
Try to set the Defragmenter to wake up the computer from the mode "sleep" and check if it works.
- Click Start, type taskschd.msc and press enter.
- In the left pane, click the arrow next to the Task Scheduler Library, Microsoftand Windows to expand the folders.
- Click the defrag folder.
- In the center pane, right-click on ScheduledDefrag and click Properties.
- Click the general tab.
- Check the box run with the highest privileges .
- Click the Conditions tab.
- Check the box to enable the computer to run this task and click OK.
- Close Task Scheduler.
Check if the Defragmenter works to wake up the computer from the mode "sleep" as expected.
If Disk Defragmenter does not at all, then we can see the post from Bill R TechSpec responded on 19 May 2011 in the following thread.
Hope this information is useful. If the problem still persists, please post back for further assistance, we will be happy to help you.
How can I recover dfrg.inf? It is absent and is probably the reason Disk Defragmenter does not work.
An alternative Defragmenter that I use is defraggler is a free download at www.piriform.com/defraggler/download/standard
I deleted my hard C drive files/programs to free up space, but disk defragmentation. does not show that I removed as much as I did. What now? THX.
you could try to run own Manager;
Click Start > run > cleanmgr.exe
you could try deleting your temporary internet files.
Close the browser, open internet options control panel and look for the option to detele the temporary files.
either by the way, how big is the hard drive?
CHKDSK would not normally start as it says that the hard disk was used? Asked if I wanted chkdsk to run when you restart the computer. Selected Yes. Restarted. CHKDSK has begun. A frozen one hour in the audit process and would not move for hours. Disk Defragmenter does not start also.
Looks like you need run the diagnostics by the hard drive manufacturer, or
the diagnostics that came with your computer and see what's happening with
This hard drive.

Hello, the microphone does not work on windows 7 64-bit, the driver that I use is 64-bit Windows Vsta. The volume is implemented maximum and so is the amplification but no way to make it work with the software assistant camera Skype or toshiba.
Can someone help me?
Usually, you need to install the webcam driver and sound to get the microphone working. The microphone is a part of webcam
As you wrote, Satellite A210 is not Windows 7 64 bit supported, so the only option you have the Vista 64 bit drivers
In my opinion, you should check if the Microphone is turned on in Windows audio settings. There you can also activate the Microphone Amplifier, which can increase the volume of the microphone.
My HP LaserJet 3055 All In One does not scan with Windows 7-64 bit. I can copy and print only. Thank you.
Is the printer connected to your PC by USB or network?
Using the USB connection, you can scan using Windows Fax and Scan software built into your operating system.
Scanning over a network connection unfortunately supported on Windows7 32 bit only, as you can find listed in the section about network scanning below:
I just dug my copy of train simulator, and it does not work on Windows 7 64-bit. Ideas please

This can help with some (but not all the) programs/drivers:
(1) uninstall the program, if it is already installed. Then when install you / reinstall instead of double click on the Setup file, right click and select 'resolve compatibility issues.
(2) then click on 'Try recommended settings' and in the next window, click on "Start the Program" to install it.
(3) after he set up see if it works properly. Note: some programs may not be able to run in Windows 7.
and it worked.
did anyone tried the version updated? I read some rather disappointing reveiws.
Once again my kind thanks for all your suggestions
My on-screen keyboard does not work on Windows 7-32 bit...
It displays error "could not start on-screen keyboard.
Please help me and tell what to do...
- It worked before?
I suggest you follow the methods that can help you reslove the problem below.
How to use the System File Checker tool to fix the system files missing or corrupted on Windows Vista or Windows 7
Method 2: You can also try to disable and enable the on-screen keyboard and check if it works well or not. So follow the steps:
- Press the Win + U keys together to launch the accessibility.
- Then click on "Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard" (probably the 3rd option in the list).
- Then on the next page, uncheck the box that says "use on-screen keyboard.
If this does not work, create a new user account and check. If it works in a new user account, then probably your user account have been damaged and would need a fix.
Create a user profile
Now search for the question.
Follow the link provided below to fix the damaged user profile.
It will be useful. Let us know for help.
I found that the cisco anyconnect (version 3, any series) does not work in windows 7 (64-bit).
The vpn is connected, but there is not any internet access.
I tried to solve the problems of:
-Disabling the firewall.
-disable the anti-virus etc.
But while I tried using with 32 bit, it works very well.
Also, I found that there is not a specific version of anyconnect vpn for only 64-bit.
Do any body have the idea how to solve this problem, either it's a bug of cisco vpn itself?
Certainly, you just need to install a later version of AnyConnect. You need a Cisco, for example a SmartNet maintenance contract, to download the new versions.
I'm looking for some medical records using Windows 7 Home Premium 64. Records are on a CD that comes with the CD VIEWER integrated display the documents. However, it does not work on Windows 7. I have a HP Photosmart C7280, I've had two or three years. When it is connected to an XP machine it worked fine. I have since bought a new PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit, and although I tried over and over, install, uninstall and reinstall the software from the HP Solution Center, I can't work. I really need to have the feature analysis of the Cluster Solution that I need to scan documents up to 100 pages.
Is it possible that this software is not compatible with Windows 7 64 bit? I downloaded the software later on the site of HP and my PC works always the latest updates of Windows 7.
If I can't get this resolved, I'll have to buy a new printer all-in-one and believe me it will not be a HP this time. Help, please.
Please see below for more details.

Well I'm done chasing my tail. It is clear that this is never going to work. I tried to do the installation on another machine in 64-bit Windows 7 (gateway GT5228) which was a clean install and never had a HP product installed on it before and she's not exactly the same way. I also tried a XP operating system installation and it works beautifully. So my conclusion is that developers at HP simply no interest to this provision on Windows 7 64 bit, or they are simply too incompetent to make it work properly. I am a software consultant in real life, and I do installations on servers is not as if I'm inexperienced. I decided to buy another printer, but after this experience, it will not be a HP. It is not just that a printer that works very well mechanically must be thrown on the junk-pile because the software cannot be upgraded successfully. HP is not very favourable to the environment, creation of garbage where it could be avoided. Sad and disappointed.
