Disk space allocation

I'm new to Ubuntu Server and new VMware server.  I want to use Ubuntu Server as my host and vmware server operating system to manage multiple virtual servers.  I have a fundamental question about the allocation of disk and how vmware server allocates disk to virtual servers.  I have a 500 GB drive, should I allow all of the 500 GB for ubuntu server host for vmware can subsequently he cut up or should I allocate a small part to the host so that the unallocated space and then to assign the created virtual methods later?  If I allocate space how vmware server know that it can consume?  If I leave unallocated space, how will be vmware server knows what is available?

With the question... should I use the guided - use entire disk and configure LVM or what I need to do a manual install?

Thank you

Welcome to the forums!

Generally depends on the use of the host how much disk space you allocate to VMware Server. The host is only used as a virtualization host? However, the disk space used by VMware is not entirely 'lost' for the host. Most of the time, you create virtual disks as a file stored on a system partition and the host file. You can create the virtual disk so that only the space used is allocated (thin configured) to save space on the host computer. As well as the size of the ramdisks is lost to the host, as it would with any other file.

Only, you should be aware that you keep "/" and "/ var" separate so "/" will not fill. You can also give the space remaining after taking Ubuntu and VMware installation to a partition dedicated to VMware. But if you need more space, you can still use this partition for your Ubuntu host later.

It's different ESX (i) that uses its own file system and partition (VMFS) to store virtual machines and which cannot be used by the host (but for what you would like to use on an ESX host...?).

    Hello

I have a server Exchange 2003 on windows 2003. We have a server VMWare Esx4.0.

    Separated from this thread.

I have a 1 TB hard drive and the folder of the system volume contains 291 G I know you said it should not be recommended, but I really need the space on my pc anyway around it?

Select Start, Control Panel, system, System Protection, place the cursor on your C partition (under Protection settings - disks available), click on the Configure button. Move the slider under disk space to the left so that the percentage is 2%. Click apply and then click OK and restart your computer.

  • Dynamic hard disk space allocation

    Hello

Is it possible to ESXi to dynamically allocate disk space as virtual machine he needs. I'm under ESXi 5.1.

    Thank you very much

    Welcome to the community,

You can configure the virtual disks to the virtual machine as thin provisioned, which allocates additional space if necessary. However, remember that thin configured disks descended not automatically if the data in the guest operating system are deleted. Make sure monitor also that you the use of the data store if you are going to fund it, i.e. to provide more disk space for virtual machines that physically available.

  • Performance of hard disk - space allocated in advance or growth?

    Hello

I'll using virtual machines mainly for the software development and test. Disks hard comments are stored in a single file on the host for reasons of portability. What do you propose to use in which case hard drive space: more (much smaller size, would somehow worse performance) or préallouée (significantly more large size, supposed to have somewhat better performance).

Sacrifice space hard disk of the host is worth the performance gain when using prealloue virtual disk?

    Thanks in advance.

in thin and thick hosted platforms are terms inappropriate - ESX different works.

Ask = growth and flat prealloue = sparse.

If you want to learn more about the details check out my http://sanbarrow.com/vmdk-handbook.html notes

    in general I recommend

Apartment type of content that changes a lot

type of sparse for mainly static content

You can't say that flat always surpasses sparse

If the size is not serious prealloue in most cases is a good idea

Flat discs have a major advantage: they are easier to repair and require no maintenance.

Rare records are difficult to repair and need maintenance. So don't forget do not reduce them regularly - there more often dynamic, the content of the vmdk is

  • Hard disk space allocation problem

I am running VMware Fusion on OSX and basically want to allocate 40 GB of hard drive of the virtual machine. I already did in the VMware settings on the side OSX and it is marked as such applied only confirming that I did. However, when I go back in Windows 7 and look in the folder C: / Local disk it always said that the size of the hard drive is 9,80 GB. I restarted Windows after the change until someone knows what could be the problem? Thank you.

  • How to allocate disk space for vCenter server logs

    Hello

I plan to level 4.1 to 5.5 U2d vCenter on the customer site. One of the conditions set out in the vSphere upgrade guide is:

"In vCenter Server 5.x, the default size for vCenter Server connects is larger than in vCenter Server 4.x. make sure that the disk space allocated for the log folder is sufficient for this increase 450MB."

My question is how to allocate disk space for the log file and where can I find the disk space allotted to file papers to vCenter 4.1 existing?

Just see the free space on the partition where the vCenter server logs are stored. If it is insufficient, increase the size of the virtual disk and then increase the file system to the guest OS.

  • VM pre-allocated low disk space

    Hello

I run 3 VM (VMware Workstation), each has its own hard drive. When I installed these machines I have previously assigned space on the assumption (false!) that the virtual machine would not grow. I'm now so low space than a machine cannot start, and as much as I know I can't shrink a pre-allocated VM?

First of all, could someone tell me what increses in fact the size of the file and as a percentage of the available disk space how much I have to leave in the future of the room?

Secondly, how can I get out of this situation? As a temporary measure, I could copy the virtual machine to a drive with more space, but I need to get it back on the original disc later, is it possible to resize a pre-allocated machine?

I think that, in the light of the foregoing, you can guess that I am a user not a computer scientist.

    Thanks for your help... Marcus

the command, we suggest you will create a clone of the current state.
The size of the resulting vmdk would be slightly larger than the netto-data on the original disc.

So if the Explorer inside the guest who would claim the 270 130 GB Gb serve the vmdk resulting could be as small as 140 GB.
The exact size of the vmdk resulting isn't exactly predictable, but it is maybe much smaller than the original vmdk.

The performance problem with the instant results from the mere fact that VMware should then read several files.
    It goes like this...

GuestOS wants to read sector 100.00 on the disk = the first VMware audits if 100,000 area is inside the snapshot 2.
If there is good - VMware check if this sector is inside snapshot1. If so very well - if not - VMware must also read the basedisk to find 100,000 sector

This means that playback has several steps more than if you would use a vmdk préallouée without clichés.

I generally recommend to use type growth basedisks if you know you want to make heavy use of snapshots

  • Missing after pre-allocating to extra 40 GB hard disk space

    Hello

I use Windows 7 with VMWare fusion and everything works fine except after a few days, I'm already low disk space.

What virtual machine installation automatically allocated 40 GB by default Windows C: / / hard drive. On the settings tab, under the hard drive, I moved the slider up to 80 GB and checked the "pre-allocate disk space" option before applying the settings. It took a few minutes to complete and then the extra space was absent from the partition on my mac, but when I run windows folder C: / / is still only 40 GB, and I can't find where the missing space disappeared.

Anyone know how I can develop either drive C to the 80 GB that was to be distributed on it, or otherwise restore disk space lost from my mac?

    Kind regards

    Jack

    Hi Jack,

    Welcome to the forums.

After resizing the virtual disk, you must tell Windows 7 to extend its partition. Go to the management of records within your guest and extend your C: drive with available disk space.

  • Allocation of disk space to virtual machines

I played around with assigning physical disk space to a virtual machine, in the "Add Hardware Wizard", I selected hard drive & gt; Create a new virtual disk & gt; He gave a size of 100 GB stored with the virtual machine and not independent.

When I started the VM space, which is all that I wanted to check if I stop the virtual machine. Rather than remove the new hard drive 2 settings of the virtual machine, I have restored a previous snapshot without the new HD. Now when I check the free space on datastore1, it seems that the 100 GB does not have to be added to the free space.

    I did something wrong?

    UPDATE:

I just tried the process again but this time assigned 8 GB.  Then I checked free space on datastore1, and now I have the 100 GB back, less the 8 GB I just posted.  Any ideas?

If you take out it just of the virtual machine, it does not actually remove the virtual disk that you created. As you say, there are 2 options when you remove the drive, we need to remove the virtual machine, and we need to remove the disc. If you remove the disk from the virtual machine, it will always keep the file even if it is not associated with a virtual machine. There is no question to delete this file. Just make sure that you delete the correct VMDK. It's easy, if it's the only drive of 100 GB or 8 GB, you have created.

  • Disk space MacAir swallowed in 10 minutes after the start.

MacAir fast - disappearing of disk space!

    My problem:

When I turn on my OS 10.6.8 MacAir is about 8Gb available, but in a few minutes, that reduces to zero. Whenever I restart the same thing happen again..... after that 10 minutes maximum available space is zero!

    The cause?

I strongly suspect a simple PDF bit that someone sent me two days; I did not notice that he weighed 6.2 Mb, instead of a few KB.  He came to me a business, I worked with years, so logically nothing intentional here. I opened it and worked as usual.

    The solution?

I been using Macs since 1984 and have a vague idea, I solved this kind of problem once before. With Onyx? But today I really don't know.

    Help! I need help :-))

    Brian.

Download the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all your files and respective sizes. Transfer to an external HARD disk or remove files, that you no longer want on your MBP.

Don't forget to empty the trash. Then only the space is allocated for the new data.

If you can't always solve this problem, run OmniDiskSweeper as root.  See the instructions at the bottom of this link:

  • Hard disk space problems

I have a MacBook Pro three years, with a hard drive of 250 GB. I have about 28 GB of free space. Try to free up more space that I deleted a few thousand pictures from iPhoto are also in the picture. My photos on the hard drive space has decreased about 5 GB, but the space allocated to the 'other' has increased by a comparable amount. Why?

I don't know but I would download and run Omni DiskSweeper. It can help you to sort out the problems of disk space and free space.

  • my computer repeat myself that I am running out of disk space...

my computer repeat myself that I am running out of disk space on local disk (c :)) I tried defragmenting it and even tried to delete some of my programs.) I don't know what else to do! can someone please help? Thanks it will be greatly appreciated!

Get a larger drive - car price reached remarkably.

Defrag won't give you any more space - and in fact, you can not defrag if there is less than 15% free space.

You can run Disk Cleanup (start > run > cleanmgr > OK)
You can reduce the size allocated for the restoration of the system to about 1 GB (right click on desktop > properties > system restore > settings)
You can disable hibernation (if you don't use it) (right click on an empty spot on the desktop > properties > screen saver > power > Hibernate)
You can disable the indexing of the drive, which will also speed up your computer a bit (http://lifehacker.com/031440/turn-off-indexing-and-speed-up-windows-xp)
You can reduce the size of your Internet browser cache (depending on the browser that you use)

But none of these answers you will earn really large amounts of space for very long.  The term solution time is a bigger hard drive.

In the meantime, download and run JDiskReport, that will show you graphically what files take up more space.

This forum does not the letter nor did pay extra for punctuation.  Please try to write in complete sentences.

Simply connect your external drive to your computer will redirect the import of files from the CD.  You don't always have enough space on your internal drive - at least that's what seems to be the case of the incomplete information provided.

Full error messages are needed to accurately diagnose problems.

There are a number of things you can do to- temporarily - free up disk space.  The only real solution, however, is to get a bigger internal hard drive.   You can move the data to your external drive, but if it's the data that you use frequently, slower access times may annoy you.  Therefore, I do not recommend that you move your My Documents folder in its entirety on the external drive, but you can certainly do this by following the related instructions. You can also move your iTunes folder there (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364)

    • You can run Disk Cleanup (start > run > cleanmgr > OK)
    • You can reduce the size allocated for the restoration of the system to about 1 GB (right click on desktop > properties > system restore > settings)

    • You can remove most of the $NTUninstallKBxxxxxx files $ following the directions here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Hotfix_backup.htm (read the warnings in the gray box first)

    1 GB OF RAM
    30 GB HDD

If you mean by "USB", a USB flash drive, you shouldn't do that for all the data that you access often unless the unit is very recent and accurate that it is likely to long term use.  Until recently, flash drives had a limited lifetime (generally non-advertised).  If you mean an external drive connected via USB, you can move data from an external hard drive, but if it's the data that you use frequently, slower access times may annoy you.  Therefore, I do not recommend that you move your My Documents folder in its entirety on the external drive, but you can certainly do this by following the related instructions.
