Disk upgrade on the iMac 27 inches, Mid2011

Hi team,

I need your help or advice

I have an IMac12, 2 27 inch MID2011 with 1 TB of SATA drive and 8 GB of RAM.

It s works fine, but I need to perform an upgrade to run faster and heavy support of virtualization software.

My first goal is to add the new SSD, which will have a shift from a SATA drive.

Now as novice very I m on the physical changes, mainly the Mac hardware, I need your advice.

Here's my dilemma

1. can I buy an external SSD with ThunderBolt and a /restore of the top SATA drive backup. Change the boot system to use the external drive as first drive system. Then erase all my SATA DRIVE (which will serve as a storage device)

2. or buy a SSD drive and take the risk to open the inner box and add the drive to the motherboard

Which option would you recommend, I need your advice?

THX in advance

  • Problem of the iMac 27 inches 5K after upgrading the RAM?

Hello, I changed my iMac RAM 5 k 27 inches, since that time, the mac crashed and restarted several times?

You probably used the wrong Ram specification, Mac are quite sensitive to the exact specifications.

Give the original of the ram. Send "new" ram back.

Always buy the new Ram with a trusted provider and meet the exact specifications. On the site of Crucial and OWC site, you will find the exact specifications required by having the model number of your mac at hand.

  • Disk upgrade - now the iTunes file names point to another partition

I just got a new drive (SSD) mounted on my machine and now because the partitions went on my 'old' hard drive all my iTune file names have changed.

Instead of being _name.mp3 DriveA/folder/file (song), I need to change it to _name.mp3 DriveB/folder/file (song). Is there a simple way to change the iTune system as I have about 550 albums (6 500 songs) in order to manually change them would be extremely difficult?

I run what I think, it's the latest version of iTunes on a Windows system 12.3.2.35 7 Pro 64-bit

If your entire iTunes library is located on the partition of 'DriveB' just hold the SHIFT key when you start iTunes and when you see this message:

Click choose a library... then navigate to and select the file iTunes Library.itl on the score of "DriveB".  This will work as long as your library is in the standard-setting with the iTunes Library.itl file and the iTunes Media contained in the same folder parent folder:

With this iTunes layout can accommodate changes in drive letter from the relative path of the library database in media folders and files is constant.  See tips to the user of turingtest2 on do a split cell library for more information.

BTW, I assumed that you are using 'DriveA' and 'DriveB' just in form of labels for your partitions and do not use drive letters 'A' and 'B' - WIndows still assigns the latter to floppy drives and should not be used for anything else.

  • Try to update the iMac G5 DMG 10.5

I have an old iMac G5 with 10.4.11 on it. He has a bad CD drive and can't seem to even a superdrive Apple CD/DVD, when connected by USB. So I a. My 10.5 installation disk DMG file. First I tried to copy it to a Firewire hard drive, but the iMac won't even see the drive (FW tab in everything it sees Mac nothing), although two other Mac (Intel), he can see very well.   I also put on a USB key, but when I run the update to 10.5, it is said to 'restart to start' and then just restarts in its 10.4 normal on the internal drive. What Miss me - how this DMG to upgrade my iMac 10.4? I also see that the iMac can start on the network; is there a way I can get one of my other Macs to serve the 10.5 update via network to begin out of that? Or, can I do the USB drive (32 GB) a real startup disk and start the iMac that?

Most of the PowerPC Macs can start up of external hard drives, FireWire (not USB).  Former ports USB2.0 (even if) may not provide enough power for a USB optical drive, if it is powered type current by USB (not its own power supply).  And it would not work for this purpose, because it is USB, no FireWire.  This is why the USB flash drive does not either, at the start of the iMac.

It may have to this external FireWire drive.  What type of disk external drive FireWIre is?  Is this a record 2.5 inches which is powered by the FireWire port, or a 3.5-inch disk addition which has its own power supply?  The type with its own power supply is better, don't count is not on the port for power.  Is it directly connected to the FireWire port on the iMac?  If you have more than one FireWire cable, have you tried more than one (to rule out a defective cable)?  FireWire 400 (older type) or FireWire 800 (new type)?  Either should work, as long as you have the right cable.  What type of port the iMac FireWire has?

If you can get it recognized by the Mac, you can use disk utility to 'restore' the .dmg to the FireWire drive file.  The FireWire drive should be cleared to have the Map of Partition Apple partition scheme and format Mac OS extended (journaled), be bootable with a PowerPC Mac.

  • I have an iMac 2007 running osx 10.6, I would upgrade to the Mavericks.  I don't have an installation CD, how to accomplish this?

I have an iMac 2007 mid running osx 10.6 with 4 GB of Ram. I want to upgrade to the Mavericks, 10.9. I don't have the installation CD and the App store only allow me to upgrade El Capitan. I'm afraid that this will bring my iMac to a crawl. Any thoughts on how I can find an installation CD or recommend other methods to achieve this?

    Thank you

    Larry

Your model is eligible? You can install El Capitan now. There is no disk installer for use with OS X since the release of Snow Leopard. Why do you believe that El Capitan will bring your computer to a crawl, but the Mavericks will not?

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard, because it is more suitable for your old hardware. Note that Snow Leopard is needed in order to upgrade to Lion or later version.

    Upgrade to Snow Leopard

You can buy Snow Leopard at the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (US). The price is $ 19.99 plus tax. You will receive a physical media by mail after placing your order.

After the installation of Snow Leopard you will need to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Combo Update v1.1 update Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store lets you download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.

         General requirements for Snow Leopard

    1. equipped mac to an Intel processor

    2. the 1 GB memory

    3. 5 GB of available disk space

    4. DVD drive for installation

    5. some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

    charges may apply.

    6. some features require Apple iCloud services; fees and

    conditions apply.

    Upgrade to El Capitan

You can pass the Lion El Capitan or directly from Snow Leopard. El Capitan can be downloaded for FREE from the Mac App Store.

    Upgrade to El Capitan

To upgrade to El Capitan, you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or installed Lion. Download El Capitan from the App Store. Sign in with your Apple ID. El Capitan is free. The file is big enough, more than 5 GB, allow it some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Mac that can be upgraded to OS X El Capitan

1 iMac (mid-2007 or newer) - model identifier 7.1 or later

2 MacBook (late 2008 or early 2009 or newer aluminium) - model identifier 5.1 or later

    3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)- model identifier 3.1 or later version

4 MacBook Air (late 2008 or newer)- model identifier 2.1 or later

5 mac mini (early 2009 or newer)- model identifier 3.1 or later version

6 mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)- model identifier 3.1 or later version

7 Xserve (early 2009) - model identifier 3.1 or later version

To find the identifier of the model open system information in the Utilities folder. It is displayed in the Panel on the right.

I have a late 2009 iMac. When I tried to upgrade to El Capitan. He said that the CHIP shows the h/d is a failure and can not be updated. I have install an external withEl of h/d Cap but it is very slow. the h/d is USB 3 but the iMac's USB 2. the h/d is only 5400 RPM. a 7200 RPM 7 / would accelerate the iMac?

No, because the limiting factor is the computer is USB 2.0, which is how it connects any external drive apart the external drive. As USB 2.0 is much slower, there is no real advantage to a 7200 RPM drive. What you need is a Firewire enclosure that supports FW800 which is much faster than USB 2.0.

  • Satellite A300D-125 - did the upgrade of the disk HARD vacuum warranty?

Make the process which will not void the warranty?

I upgraded the RAM to 4 GB, and many people say that it is not.
What about the upgrade of the primary HARD disk?

And what happened to place an extra HARD drive to the second HDD slot. I think that he should not void the warranty? What is - it actually?

I have good news for you my friend:
If you upgrade the RAM or HARD drive you will not lose the warranty of your laptop.

The two components can evolve without losing the guarantee of the user. :)

Of more if you add a second HARD drive will be not too lost the warranty. But don t forget in the second drive Bay HARD must be a second HARD drive connector. Otherwise, you can install a second HDD of the t.
