DNG files, metadata and catalog

Hello I currently have LR2.7 64-bit running on W7 64 bit. My camera captures native DNG (Leica M9). I import via "Convert to DNG and add to the catalogue" worth compression without loss for files when importing (for copy and extra copy on external hard drive). I prefer not to rename files on import as my first sorting level is contiguous numbering of all original.

I'm little upgrade to LR3, however I'm waiting for the resolution of the problems reported with the catalog updates. My plan is to first import the images to the laptop when traveling and important copies to my desktop, a first action to return. I understand that there may be issues of import and export of catalog files on both machines currently duplicate with. I prefer a lot to keep multiple copies on computers apart until I swallowed the files in my normal diet at home.

I'm looking options to avoid rebuilding a catalog, if something is not bad. I prefer to keep initial develop information, Keywords, changes of ratings made on the laptop.

I understand that the development parameters are stored in the DNG itself rather than in a file. I'm not sure just where each type of information is stored, which is listed in the file and in the lrcat file. I understand that previews are inconsequential, because I need to be updated in any case those who, after the changes.

So specifically, if I just copy the DNG files after my initial changes on the laptop with the main machine, what information willl be kept and who will be lost if I throw the laptop catalog to reduce to nothing all the problems with import/export?

Development settings?

Keywords?

Ratings/labels?

I have the ability to import via CS5 on both machines but try to optimize my use of LR for as many functions as possible.

Develop settings are the final position of the sliders in the develop module. With this information, Lightroom can make the photo with your changes. You do not lose this information if you write to XMP and then reimport into Lightroom.

Develop the story is the sequence of steps that you followed to reach the final position. You lose that when you write to XMP and then reimport into Lightroom.

I guess I don't understand the point of the exercise (unless it's purely an educational exercise). If you export in the catalog, and then import from catalog, something that Lightroom is very easy to do, you don't lose any of the catalog information.

So, you have at your disposal, a method that retains all the information catalog; and a method that doesn't work. Which one will you use?

Apple has not updated their libraries to support raw yet to be able to understand the new 16 - bit floating point dng files created by Lightroom. If the Finder cannot generate a file icon to show you. Usually the DNG support built into OS X only knows how to treat direct dng files conversions of files from cameras raw is already in favor.

  • Catalogue again pass PC but moved with the tree files metadata and tag

I'll start at the beginning. Years ago I had PS elements 4 original and upgraded to PSE11 on the same computer and no problem. . at some point, we moved the files from a PC to a new PC. We knew on the displacement of PES in the catalogue and transfer of files. I guess I have relabelled and organized all the photos and was happy for years.

Last month my husband used the utility PC mover 'link turn' PES 11 to a new PC by moving all the files. I then found the problem, because all my photos had no information and no tag and no tree tag on the screen.  As a precaution, I saved the metadata to all media and created a tree of xml on the old PC before tags it back up again. We were going to do the process of back-up/restore to the new PC, but when my husband was struggling to install Adobe PES 11 on the new PC he transferred somehow all my photos (12,000) and there they were with labels and information and all organized under their respective keywords.

The problem is PSE11 created a new file (Bethpictures) with all the photos inside.

Now it seems that we SO 3 separate files with these same pictures 12 000 each. I see all these folders on the left side of the page of the Organizer.

    (1) the original file from Windows

    (2) the old file from PC-bethalbums

    (3) new file of PC-bethpictures

and XML file - tree of the tag

so is it possible to remove redundancies and the tag tree file without any screwing or should I delete it all and make the catalog upward and restoration of the process. Can we put the Bethpicture file under bethalbums and remove duplicates? Or get rid of bethalbums (from old PC) and only has Beth photos (new files created by PSE)? Can I delete this file tree of xml tag or ultimately the removal of the tree of the tag on my page of Organizer PSE?

Should I back up catalog now on the new PC? And then when I get a new PC in the future I can use the backup/restore process or one should always save metadata to file?

OR should I leave him alone?

If I take a chance - I have the following questions about the process in two steps:

Is there a video for me to watch on how to do this?

    some issues are still confused.

    1. on the new should PC-before you begin the process I install PES 11?

1 a - should there be pictures on the new Windows PC at all? Or get everything restored with AdobePSE11?

2 - when the backup catalog on CD it will prompt me when another CD is required to be inserted if several CD is necessary?

Catalogue food 3 when to new PC is there an order to put in the CD?

Sorry for the delay in responding to...

You have layoffs after several restorations.

Before you delete it, you should check which of these 'restorations' are the best.

Each restoration produced a copy of your image tree and a catalog folder.

When you open the organizer with one of the catalogues referring to these various restorations, you can consult:

-where the pictures are stored (in the information on the right panel)

-where the catalog folder is stored: Help menu > system information.

If you are satisfied with a given restore session, at the locations above should not be deleted, the others can be deleted completely from the Explorer or Finder.

Your catalog is probably not in the default location on C:, it may be in a different location. You can use Catalog Manager to move the catalog to the location by default if it is not already there.

It would be a good thing. Registration of metadata to the files is a good and redundant way to be sure, but a healthy backup is sufficient.

    Yes

1 a - should there be pictures on the new Windows PC at all? Or get everything restored with AdobePSE11?

    No, everything is restored, firstly the photo files, then the catalog. If so, you will need to convert a catalog from an older version;

  • All of a sudden all in LR 6.6 DNG files give the message "the file seems to be damaged or not supported.

I use LR 6.6 on Mac OS 10.10.5.

Suddenly and without warning, a problem with all DNG files in my catalog.  I can see the pictures in the library without problem module, but when I go to the develop module, I can't edit photos and I am presented with the message "the file appears to be damaged or not supported.  All these DNG files are on my hard drive for months or years and I have been able to change them without problem before.

    I can't tell what's happening, but I've tried a few things:

    * The problem has affected all 8000 + DNG files in my catalog, but no other type of file

    * The files are readable by other programs such as developer Iridient and overview of Mac.

    * I first noticed the problem after the upgrade to 6.6 LR, but the problem may have posed earlier

    * All DNG files were shot on a Fujifilm XE - 2 and RAF converted to DNG with Adobe Camera Raw.

I just finished hours to edit DNG files. I selected all the thumbnails and trained to a collection. I noticed that after by sliding down as all the thumbnails showed the icon there is a conflict in the metadata. I selected all the thumbnails and reset the metadata. I lost all my changes.

Unfortunately, I had not yet recorded a new catalog.

Is there a way to retrieve my changes?

    Jim :-(

    Jim,

You * must * see "Of Metadata" - you? - what usually shows when you read disk metadata in the catalog. You * don't * see the other two steps, because this is just what happened to be the last two steps, I made for the picture before reading the metadata. Have you tried clicking on the second to the last stage of the story and then the who..., to see if you can understand what stage returns your photos to the desired state, before the Oops?

On the other hand, if you have a previous Catalog/backup, you can resort to without losing too much, well, that's what backups are for.

  • Keep the name of original when file rename and convert to DNG

In LR 2.6 when I imported my (RAW) images, I would incorporate keeping the original file number, so I would like to batch rename and convert to DNG, once they were already in my catalog.  As I draw from stock, I keep a meticulous care the registry of what I shoot for purposes of metadata and keywords.  I noticed that when I upgraded LR 3, my in my existing catalogs/folders, the original file names are gone and just the new personalized name & sequencing appear. Unfortunately, I still have the Word key & metadata tag many images, but the original numbering in the camera is now missing.  With my new whatever I did to preserve the original numbering, is to import, make my keywords/metadata, and then rename a batch.  However, having to go back is pain, when in the former is LR was easier.  Maybe someone out there knows how to keep both.  It's just easier to check my notes when I have the original of the image number.  Any tips/ideas/suggestions?

What means Jeff are the display options in the metadata panel here:

I import, rename and then convert to DNG and as you can see wear the camera file name in the field of origin.

I don't know why I want as I back up after the name change.

Metadata (metadata 'real' like keyowords or develop adjustments) are never saved in Raw DNG files (like .nef, .cr2) directly. With these files, there is always a file called (with the .xmp extension) created to contain the XMP information.

And Yes, if the option is disabled, LR record key words on the XMP sidecar, when you 'Write to the metadata file' or have the autowrite option active.

  • Rendering ARC of DNG files of photos taken with the new Canon Powershot G16 'PSE V10 + CR 6.4.1' and 'PES V13 + CR 8.6 "

Because (for reasons that are not suitable to my questions): I can not reasonably migrate to new Versions of PSE and I'm more or less stuck for a few years for the use of PSE V10. I'm so looking for a relatively effective solution to the process/change (a small percentage) of the RAW files from my new future/camera (s) with the combination of PSE V10 and CR 6.4.1 (according to my understanding, PSE V10 does not support CR 8.6 - PSE V10 not even allows you to import new cameras RAW files in the PSE catalog).

I was hoping that the DNG Converter could be a good solution for me. I intended

    • to convert the RAW files from my new camera (and my new future cameras) with an updated version of the DNG Converter,
    • import the .dng files in PSE V10
    • and then access to (and then for a few of them: change) DNG files with the combination of PSE V10 and CR 6.4.1.

However, I felt recently, the profile only camera of the CR 6.4.1 that makes reasonably well my new compact camera Canon Powershot G16 DNG files is the 'Adobe Standard' of the camera profile.  In my tests with the combination of PSE V10 and ACR 6.4.1, rendering of these files with other CR 6.4.1 DNG profiles (for example the 'faithful camera' profile) (on colors and brightness/contrast) is really ugly and (to a layperson like me) more or less unusable (while rendering the same DNG file with the profile "Camera Faithfull" from the combination of CR 8.6 + PSE V13 is entirely reasonable).

May I ask the following questions to someone who is familiar with the format, DNG and CR?

    1. My observations (i.e. made ugly of Canon Powershot G16 photos with the "profile trusty camera" ACR 6.4.1) correspond to what experts DNG should and expect?
    2. What is the likely reason for the ugly rendering of the 'faithful Camera' profile of the VC 6.4.1? The converter DNG not include a specific G16 'Faithful Camera' profile in the DNG file?
    3. Or do you think I did something wrong and I'm the one to blame for the ugly rendering with the 'Faithful Camera' profile used by CR 6.4.1? If this is the case: I have probably wrong and what can I do better?
    4. Do you think that the combination of the PSE V10 and CR 6.4.1, I'm having similar problems with the conversion to DNG Raw files in the future cameras as the successor to the Nikon D5300 or D7100 (which I'd probably buy once available)? Or do you think that the problems that I encountered with the Powershot G16 photos are not likely to occur with most other new camwras?

A big thank you in advance for your answers.

In case you want to maybe look at rendering typical of one of my files (created with Version 8.6.0.254 of the DNG Converter) DNG of Canon Powershot G16 .cr2 photo, I transferred to https://www.dropbox.com/l/T3LJyZWkBZpcKkNe8S8ufr

    1. made with PES V10 and CR 6.4.1 with the camera's ' Adobe Standard' profile' - seems OK
    2. rendering with PSE V10 and CR 6.4.1 with profile 'Faithful Camera' - ugly.
I've created screenshots of ugly rendering by CR 6.4.1 with other camera Formats...
    3. made with PSE V13 and 8.6 CR with the 'Adobe Standard' of the camera profile - seems OK
    4. made with PSE V13 and 8.6 CR with the profile 'Faithful Camera' - seems OK

  • How to retrieve metadata and photos in my catalog

I have LR3 and windows 7, all my photos are already published and cataloged in their selected records, today I opened LR3 to do more work, to find that 80% of the photos are missing from their files and records have been appointed is no longer.

All photos are always in my hard drive and when I tried to place them in LR3, they had lost all the metadata information and were published, they were in their original raw. Is it possible to retrieve and place all of the information that it was?

There are over 7000 photos and I could never do this work again one by one, is it also a means of protection against this happening again?

I suspect that you have opened an old copy of your catalog backup. Are you sure which catalog you are editing? You have a recent backup of your catalog on which you can base? Do not open the Catalog backup directly from its backup location!

  • Can I merge a JPG and RAW file into a catalog and keep your changes?

I used to shoot RAW and JPG and always used to all copy in the same folder. That worked well, but was a bit pointless as the JPG served as only a temporary preview until the RAW was loaded in behind her. For the speed of editing events, I started to divide files in two separate folders and import, but tag and basic edits, crops etc. on jpg files, so for the use of the 'News' site, then work on any higher quality customer since the FIRST requirement. Would be nice if I could later merge the two together to make these fundamental changes - and sides etc - then were applied to the RAW files. They have the same names - bar extensions, of course - be renamed by LR import. I tried on a test session, but it just seems to add separate JPG and RAW images to the catalog. Is it possible to him have associated the RAW not published with the edited JPG?

    Guy

    Guy,

I don't want to get into or the not-so-rights of your workflow.

You can try Syncomatic Plugin from John Beardythat will synchronize the metadata and possibly develop settings between different file formats with the same (or similar) base name. Subsequently you can stack the Raws with JPEG files, possibly using Auto carpet when capturing".

But remember that application development parameters of a file to a Raw JPEG may not create the desired corrections, as the base is something completely different.

  • How can I transfer a photo library (raw and jpeg files) fram without loss of metadata and keywords?

How can I transfer my favorite photos library on my MacBook to another library on an external hard drive without losing metadata and keywords?

If you want to keep the metadata, you must export the images as the current versions, edited. File > export > export... images.  Then you can turn on the indicator "Tile, keys, descriptions words":

Choose a high quality for JPEG, not to lose quality.  To the RAWs export them under like TIFF picture.

You can export the RAWs as "file > export > export original unmodified" and keep it RAW, but which will not include the metadata.  And the Photos will allow you to export an XMP file with metadata, but when I tested, it did not apply the metadata when you import the RAW files again. So the best compromise for the RAW format would be to export as TIFF, another lossless format.

Lightroom does not recognize any of my file types [DNG / JPEG etc] and is unable to import? any ideas for a fix?

It's impossible. LR is a non-destructive editor and photo management. For her to not see images of the files would make it one of the worst of these programs tyupes.

So there is a parameter that you have screwed up in the import dialog window that prevents your DNG, TIFF, JPG, PSD, PNG, CMYK and film formats appear in the import window.

So show us a screenshot of your import window.

More than likely you have chosen a destination that has all the permissions read/write to your username.
