  I'll set up a laboratory at home to build a laboratory to the NSX. I am running 3 on VMware Workstation 11 Esxi hosts. All three hosts of esxi run each 4 Ethernet adapters on them.

  To configure installation VXlan for my lab at home, I have modified the virtual machine's .vmx file and changed the vmxnet3 device and it works.

  I managed to solve this problem by separating the storage traffic to a different vswitch and the traffic to a different VDS NSX.

• Question about the subscription renewal for vSphere lab Essentials home

  First post on the forum here.  My apologies if this isn't the right place for a question like this.

  I have a lab at home that I have set up using the "VMware vSphere 5 Kit Essentials" that I had bought on the VMware online store.  It was a pretty fun because it let me familiarize themselves with the technology that I use at work without the same consequences for the mistakes of the project.

  To be honest though, I have never much thought about support and subscriptions for it... Setup should really just have to learn and be the main server for my house projects.  The cost for me to buy the Kit of Essentials has been a little more than $500 a year ago, and it seems that my still currently active subscription (my account displays "subscription only" for the Essentials Kit) allows me to download the latest patches and maybe even upgrade to a new major version in the future.  I would like to continue the subscription, as this seems to be more profitable that leave on the subscription and then renew... compared to the initial $ 500, a one or three year renewal looks pretty good - and I'd get to continue to be on the latest versions of the vSphere Essentials.

  I thought it would be as simple as clicking on renew somewhere on my account, but that begins to not look like an option.  I think that I am driven to get in touch with a business partner for the subscription renewals (is this sounding right?).  This seems a bit much for me for a small laboratory at home like mine.  Is the only way to renew a subscription via a partner company?  If I'm completely off track here, please let me know.  If I'm here, does anyone know (or recommend) a partner company that manages small renewals as mine would be?

  Maybe I'm hesitant for nothing, but I thought I would ask those who understand the subscription and support better than me.

  To answer my own question, I discovered that for users with contracts less than $3,000... is it possible to make a renewal online without the need to go through a partner.  It turns out that the link to the online renewal page is available through the 60, 30, 15 days notice in advance of the emails that are sent to the holder of the account (which is how I found it).  The page renewal me related to this FAQ PDF that I found useful.  I was able to successfully renew my subscription from the link.

  The important bits for me were the following (from the FAQ):

  I just purchased a Lenovo think TD 230 server with Xeon processor and 2 gd of ram. I confirmed that it meets all of the requirements in the HCL on the VMware Web site. The server contains up to 32 GB of ram, but until I buy the second processor I'm only will be upgraded to 16 GB which will give me a nice amount of memory to be distributed to the virtual machines. I'm looking for some documents with details on how to set up a laboratory SCNET using workstation as host. I know that I have I have an msdn account have access to tons of operating systems and of AMENDMENTS to build the vm with. I'm just trying to understand how to structure the environment using esxi, vsphere, vcenter server and build it in the workstation 8

• vSphere lab at home on systems of office for the installer of vmware FT and vma

  Hi everyone, I intend to build my VMware vsphere lab to try/learn the advanced features like VMDirectPath, fault tolerance, DPM, VMA and vCloud.

  initially I thought to buy a laptop computer with 16 GB of RAM to build my lab inside the laptop. But after some research, I got to know FT and other features will not work with nested virtualization.

  So now I am planning to buy 2 desktop computers because the server systems produce too much noise.

  Here, I'm afraid the CPU compatibility. I understand only a few processors support VT - d, FT and vma. I checked the compatibility in VMware site but VMware has not provided the compatibility of the desktop processors.

  If someone already tried successful building home lab with FT and other functions on desktop systems, please advise me.

  I would look through the forums of vm-support Web site HCL and a best guide on unsupported hardware. Processors should not be the big problem with those stated, but the components on the motherboard will likely need replacement.

• Networking lab at home ideas?

  Currently, my server from lab to the ESXi 5.5 House (which has 2 physical network cards) is connected to a switch at low cost. The switch has in turn a single connection upstream 1 Gbps to my router. The rest of my network is connected directly to the router.

  So far, I was using the ESXi default configuration - please see the attached screenshot for details. I am decently satisfied of this, but in the spirit of learning and continuous improvement, I wonder if there is something I could do better here - maybe a way to make use of my second NETWORK card, for example?

  In a switch, you are not able to take advantage of the functions such as the use of VLANs, but there is nothing wrong with the addition of the NETWORK map on a new usable by specific VMS switchport. However, I would not use it for grouping NETWORK adapters on the existing uplink port.

  Add some complexity in the design of laboratory is to dedicate a NIC for vmotion and one for traffic from the virtual machine. Nothing prevents you from using the separation of intellectual property, and using other IP varies across the same net past, but it would generate noise unnescessary.

  How to create a USB startup for ESXI 5.1/5.5 on a Windows computer and start on your new Lab Server?  I have most of the equipment to build the first part of my lab and have not really understood how to get the software downloaded on the site and on the USB I intend to help start my lab server.

  Most implementations of VMware Government on that I asked questions still use 4.x, so I'm in no hurry to enter 5.5 and will start in 5.1.  Once I have get some experience, I'll create a startup for each disc.

  Just to let you know, I have several years of experience in Admin system and network engineering.  It's now time to update my skills to the next level.

  Develop my above comment I am beginner with a single server and spread quickly to a second with once shared storage I have experience and am comfortable in the sense that I'm moving.

  Depending on what you plan to install in the lab, you can register and download a 60 day trial for example vSphere to http://www.vmware.com/go/evaluate-vsphere-en or the free hypervisor http://www.vmware.com/go/get-free-esxi. Just to install it on a USB stick, plug the USB on the lab server, start the interactive installation from the CD and select the USB drive as the installation target.

  I was trying to create a distributed switch in my lab at home, after having no idea what I was doing, I deleted the VDS.

  I tried to recreate the old vSwitch and encountered an error during the creation of the vSwitch.

  I tried to reboot the host, but it did not work.

  Before you create the VDS, I had two NICs connected to iSCSI port.

  I did not remove the portbinding before deleting the vSwitch, and I think that it may have broken the networking.

  Is there a way to fix this?

  I entered 255.255.255.255 as the mask of network instead of 255.255.255.0.

  Everything works fine now.

  Do not drink and the refectory with esxi.

  I have setup an ESX4.0 Server and how it works in VMware Workstation 6.5.2 build 156735. There is no other virtual machines that I built in either in ESX server or VMware Workstation.

  I would like to set up at least two or three ESX 4.0 server in VMware Workstation. and then I like to create a few VMs that have vCenter server, DB server and domain control, DNS, DHCP server and file server and print., exchange 2007 and SharePoint server.

  I don't have any other high-end SAN or NAS storage or another type of storage. Is there another way to set up shared storage that I use for all my virtual machines that I like the installer. I like to achieve and learn of VMotion, VM HA, DRS, Storage VMotion, etc...

  Is it possible for me to do all this with what I have?

  Also, you can find Openfiler and Freenas as VSA for VMware (virtual storage device), so you can import your VMware Workstation or VMware ESX/ESXi.

  indeed. The lines, you need to configure are the VTY lines, visible at the bottom of the configuration. A basic configuration that would allow all protocols including telnet and ssh would look like this:

  I just started on the road to VMWare and I could use some suggestions, I'm sure, have been repeated hundreds of times.

  I have 2 Compaq DL380 in my lab at home that I use to learn and get up to speed on VMWare. But I need to get a SAN/NAS so that I can realize all functions real, Vmotion, DRS, HA, etc.

  So I was hoping someone might know a cheap and popular that accomplishes this task.  It is for purposes of laboratory at home only, nothing Prod.

• Audit of Cisco equipment for my lab

  I prepare lab at home and I bought some Cisco equipment and have some thoughts (doubts).

  1. How can I check if these facilities are new or reconditioned refurbished? provider says its new, but!

  2 - assuming that I am in the Middle East and the supplier brought the material, which means that in the case where if the equipment not intended to be sold in the Middle East, do I have no support from cisco "locally"?

  3-if its new brand, how can you check if this equipment is intended to be sold in my area?

  I tried on the cisco Web site, but find that I must be partner to get these details.

  (1) it's not easy to tell by looking at the kit.  When the Cisco partner ordered the kit refurbished the number of partner usually a - RF at the end.

  (2) you get only supported if you have a Cisco, for example a SmartNet maintenance contract.  If you have that you have supported.

  (3) I don't think you could check this, unless it's something like kit WiFi which has a regulatory domain.  In this case the regulatory field is often embedded in the part number.

  If you have a machine with at least 8 GB of RAM (I prefer 12GB) and a quad core i7, then have you thought about using the official Cisco Simulator, VIRL?
