drive external hard letters block

I bought a new computer.  Ranging from the tp XP 64 pro 7.  I have several external hard drives that I use frequently for backups, etc.  With XP, I was able to assign certain letters to some readers.  After that, whenever I plugged this drive in (all USB), he would get the same letter.  In other words if I had 'J' assigned to a drive, whenever I connected this drive, it would come as 'J' even if a lower letter like 'E' or 'F' could be available.  I remember even now how I did it.  Somewhere in player management control components.  I guess I can do the same in Win 7, but I can't.

Hello

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you want to lock the drive letters for your external drives. I'll be happy to help you.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps you to assign drive letters.

a. connect your external hard drive

b. open disk management by using the following procedure:

c. Click Start

d. type 'computer management' in the start search box

e. click on computer management, under storage, click disk management

f. right click on the drive that you want to name it, click on paths and change the drive letter, choose drive letter you want to use, and then click OK

g. unplug your hard drive external and reconnect the drive. It should always be assigned to this letter.

Note: It is best to use the first available drive letter, or the first series of consecutive drive letters in the case of multiple partitions.

If you still have problems or questions please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help you.

    Hello!

I have such a problem: I work with my external case alu Toshiba 3.5 HDD 500 GB and after awhile of copy of the files in the laptop it disappears and appears this luckily device recognized.
Can it be caused by not enough power in the USB port?

THX for any help or the workaround

    Hello

Yes, this may be caused by the fact, there is not enough power provided by the USB port. first of all, note that external USB hard drives 3.5 inches are generally designed to be used with systems of office due to their higher power needs (this is also the reason that many need an external power supply of their own). my suggestion would be to buy a 2.5 inch drive external hard USB is designed to be used with laptops. Another reason that the hard drive may disappear when copying files, is that there may be a problem with the connection of the USB cable between the laptop and the external HARD drive. I suggest to check that both ends are connected properly and not put any pressure on the cables and keep them stable.

I hope this helps you with your question

  • Drive external HARD encrypted in ExFat?

    Hello

I have a new drive external HARD I need to use on a Mac and a PC. I need to access the same files (data analytics), so I don't want to make 2 partitions and have duplicate files. What I've read, it seems that ExFat is the best option for this (they are large files, so that the FAT will not work). My work, however, requires external hard drives to encrypt. When I tried to put it on my MacBook Pro (El Capitan), however, I received an error.

My question is this: is there a way to meet all three of these criteria?

    (1) disk encrypted

    (2) read/write on a mac

    (3) read/write, the same files on a PC

I have a separate HARD disk for Time Machine, I use an airport. This disc will have to travel with me.

    Thanks in advance!

If you were able to encrypt it using the built-in OS x software, Windows would not be able to decipher. If you use a Windows build-in encryption software, OS X would not be able to decipher.

You have to find a 3rd party package that works on BOTH OS X and Windows, which can encrypt and decrypt on both platforms.

In the past, I would have done TruCrypt, however, he was abandoned by unknown original authors, but there have been a few replacements based on the original source of TruCrypt.  Try googling 'TruCrypt Alternatives' and you might find something where they support the OS X and Windows.

Otherwise, you will need to find another cross platform encryption package.

  • Connection drive external hard am.

    Hello world
I wonder if it is possible to connect the drive external hard am to z3?
In the light of others do it on the other android device. Got an otg cable, plugged my HDD but the phone is not supported it or I'm doing something wrong.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Yes, you can check what file system that is used if you connect to a PC, right-click on the drive in the Solution Explorer and select Properties.

It is possible to convert NTFS to FAT without deleting all data, but I do it without the first run a backup in case something goes wrong. And if you have files bigger than 4 GB it will be problems with these as FAT32 does not support that. exFAT supports, but I didn't know of any tool that can convert NTFS to exFAT without wiping the drive.

    Hi keo1,

We recommend that you connect the drive to a different USB port. Also run the disk check for errors.

  • Cannot access the files from the internal hard drive that has been converted to drive external hard after the motherboard is dead

I can't access the files from an internal hard drive that has been converted to drive external hard after the motherboard is dead. I think that my files are still there, as shown in the volume of the player volume ~ 500 gb which is almost completely full. But I can't access most files, including documents and settings. When I took 'ownership' of the folder, I could open the TI but then it showed everything that was in my documents and settings on the computer file I used to open it, not the documents of the car.

Uhm... I think the issue here is a misunderstanding of what you watch.

If you want to access your files from the old hard drive - you need to look in the right place.  If the old system was "Windows 7", "Documents and Settings" is the * wrong * place to look and "Users" would be the place to go.

You * will * take ownership and change permissions on ALL (you want to propagate to all subfolders/files when do - to save time) in order to get them properly.

New-->: Windows Vista/7 would have your files located in the directory 'Users' of the root of the drive - and then under your username.

    • \USERS\\Desktop\
    • \USERS\\Downloads\
    • \USERS\\Favorites\
    • \USERS\\Documents\
    • \USERS\\Music\
    • \USERS\\Pictures\
    • \USERS\\Videos\

    ... etc...

Documents and settings to WIndows Vista/Windows 7 is a symbolic link and would lead to what you see if you tried to use it.

  • Directory of drive external hard has been changed

My drive hard external has been labeled the E: drive and now when I plug his label the F: drive. My library, internet browser, network, etc. are synchronized to the files in my external drive to which they cannot access more because it renamed Windows for some reason any code of practice. If I change things to be synchronized with the new drive F: then it causes other problems that he will not save the info synchronized as it requires me to enter new info. Is there a way to get windows to make my external backup as the E: drive (PS my Sandisk Cruiser USB drive to carry the F: drive is now listing himself as the G: drive, causing similar problems)

  • Drive external hard drive does not appear under "devices."

    Hello

I just updated my OS to Sierra of MacOS. I have connected my external hard drive (HDD) and it does not appear under "Devices" in my Finder window. It worked fine before the update.

I use a MacBook Pro (end of 2013), currently running MacOS Sierra (Version 10.12). My external HARD drive is a SeaGate Slim SL Media (500 GB).

The external HARD disk appears in disk utility application. He also appears on the about this Mac > system report > USB. I don't know what the problem is, the external HARD disk is identified but does not appear for use in the Finder window.

I read that it could possibly be in mode 'sleep' and putting the MacBook to sleep (while it is plugged into the external HARD drive) and it to wake up again should solve the problem. However, it did not work. No more restarting my MacBook. It was mentioned in another post that it may require extra power, so I attached power adapter and again, without success.

I do not want to clear the contents of the external HARD drive.

Is there a way to get my external HARD drive works as expected with my MacBook?

    Thank you much in advance.

    I also have this problem.

    Hi guys,.

I just upgraded my iMac to Mac OS Sierra this morning. I have my external hard drive to NTFS using Tuxera NTFS. I updated Tuxera and restarted the machine. However, I don't see the external hard drive mounted on Finder or desktop as usual, but I can see it in disk utility.

Someone at - it the same experience or know how to fix this problem? Help, please.

  • Drive external hard Mac has shown in the past but does not now show in disk utility. How can I get it back?

I'm going crazy trying to find an answer to this question! My external hard drive has shown in the past but not now shows in disk utility. My OS is X El Capitan.

I tried to turn off my computer then unplug my external hard drive waiting for 30 seconds back on my computer and plug my hard drive with no joy.

    I hope someone can help.

    Hi willy of San Jacinto.

I understand that your external hard drive is no longer seen by your computer. I know it's important to have a good backup location, and for that to work, I am so happy to provide assistance with this.

Read this article on troubleshooting USB devices:

OS X El Capitan: If a USB device does not work

If your computer is yet to see the hard drive after following these steps, it would be interesting to test this drive on another computer if available. If you continue to have problems, I suggest contacting the manufacturer of the hard disk on a hardware failure possible.

Thank you for using communities of Apple Support, cheers!

  • Why my drive external hard need my authentication to copy, delete, etc.

Two of my 2 external hard drives suddenly started demanding that I have to authenticate whenever I need to transfer data between them (no problem in my iMac HD). I got lost. I would like to make the screenshots

    A permissions problem, most likely.

If you are not worried about the permissions, you can turn them off completely.

Select the drives, press command-I, click on the padlock, authenticate, check the box indicating

    "Ignore permissions on this volume.

  • Drive external hard connected via USB hub: icons not showing on desktop

Hi... on an iMac 2015, using a USB hub 3.0 occasionally to connect an external hard drive (which stores these things as art assets)... but the external hard drive icon does not appear on the desktop... it IS in the sidebar of Finder, though...

But on the icon the Finder sidebar, the small icon "eject" gray is missing, and the only way to eject is to right click and select "eject" or use the eject button in the Finder toolbar... it's okay...

But is there a way to display the icon on the desktop, so I can always remember to eject the disks attached?

(the desktop icon shows normally when connected directly via the USB ports at the rear)

    Thank you.

Finder-> Preferences-> general, check the appropriate boxes under "show these items on the desktop".

[My personal choice is them having all checked]

  • Drive external hard (connected to the Mac mini USB) disconnect during use

I have a 3 TB (WD green) hard drive in an external hard drive enclosure "miniStack MAX Media", connected to my Late 2012 Mac mini via USB.

I don't know when he started to do this, but I recently noticed that it was dismantling even when she was in use; the error was:

    Disc eject does not correctly
EJECT 3 ' TB' before you unplug or turn off.

I replaced the USB cable and saw the same mistakes.

I moved the HARD drive to a different box. same mistakes.

I swapped the HARD drive to a whole new WD 4TB blue; same mistakes.

So now I have a new drive in a new case with a new cable, and I see the same messages "Disk not ejected correctly".

(By the way the disk utility has shown that the two discs were fine when I ran first aid.)

This brings me to assume that the problem is with my Mac mini, which runs at El Capitan and is fully aware of the updates of the operating system.

Recommendations on next steps to investigate and resolve this problem?

It seems that your external draws too much power. That shows the report of your system? You have an external power supply for external drive? Have you tried to use all the USB ports on your Mac?

  • drive external hard crash panic kernel freeze and reboot

Hi, I write because I just had a problem with my external hard drive.

I have connected to my macbook pro to my external drive (raid 2 disc 0, 3 to, usb 3.0, western Digital, it appears as if it were 1 disk 3.5 "). I used this drive yesterday and several other times without any problem. I don't know why all of a sudden I saw the message on the upper right of the screen with the alert ' you incorrectly disconnected the disk XX "(is a kind of translation bc my os is in Italian) and after that the screen and the pointer of the mouse (with the ball of the Rainbow) stopped as if it were freezing. After a few seconds, black screen and the system rebooted! That's happened?

I tried again, this time with another external drive, samsung 1 TB usb 3.0. After only a few minutes it was connected... the same thing. Message on the upper right corner, gel, black screen, restart... Below you can see the log of 2 crash.

That's happened? HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.
