Drive letter of the mystery in Windows Explorer

I have a strange problem with Windows 7.   When I open 'My Computer', I have a drive named "Local Disk Q", which seems to be a ghost car.  I can't get any information on it, and while I can rename, that's all I can do.  It does not open and there is no clue as to where he is, or why it makes its appearance.  (It does not appear in the disk management area, only in windows Explorer and any box that refers to the drives on the computer.)  Someone at - he a clue as to how to get rid of this or whence it maybe?  Thank you!

  • How can I change the drive letter of the floppy drive?

In the system properties Device Manager I want to change the settings of the floppydiskdrive (FDD). This is currently the station A:.
I plugged in an external floppy drive and want this device as A: station.

How can I change the current drive letter assignment?
The reserved drive letters option is not available because the fields are gray.

    Steef

    Hello Steef

As far as I know, it cannot be changed. Each internal floppy drive has A drive letter. Each external device becomes first available letter after later used in Windows Explorer in my computer.

  • Change the drive letter for the recovery partition

The recovery partition is, by default, the value to D: which means that if I create a data partition, it is automatically in letters f: while this is not unacceptable, it is inconvenient.  I would like to change the drive letter of the partition data on D: and set the recovery as f partition: if I do this, it will automatically disable the ability to recover?  I am running Windows 7 Professional, which is an originally installed Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade.

Hello Richard9, if you change the Recovery D: HP restore partition to another letter, the recovery procedure would not work if you ever need.

If you have files HP Recovery discs, you could delete this partition and recover the capacity of hard drive D: and use the set of diskettes to restore HP recovery to reintall the original software and the partitions of the hard drive, all as they were when shipped from HP.

  • UNABLE to get the drive letter of the disk 0 Partition 1

    Hello world.

Well, yesterday I tried to install Ubuntu netbook edition 10.10. Well, in the middle of something was wrong and it corrupted the Windows partition. Linux is installed, but Windows is damaged.
I'm on a Gateway laptop, and I have a recovery disk. The thing is when I try to boot from the disc, it says Windows is loading files... and then it opens with an error message saying fail to get the drive letter of the Partition 1 of disk 0. When I turn on the computer, I present a selection of software Ubuntu and Windows Vista loader option. If I choose that, it would open a window of system repair and th other options. I passed by them and tried to recover my pc from the recovery disc. However, none of them worked. I chose the option to Scan drive for errors, and you are prompted to restart my pc. I did, but now, if I select the Windows Vista loader it comes with a long error message.
In the Linux file browser, C:\ is now called PQSERVICE, but he's not normal Windows OS files.
The thing I would ask is; How I completely erase my hard drive, reset the partitions and reinstall windows from my recovery disc? I have no special programs or documents that I need to backup, I all recorded them on a portable hard drive. Also, I can reinstall Linux (rightly) with no dramas.
PS. I have a drive to upgrade Vista to Windows 7. I have not yet tried, but if I inserted that and tried to boot my computer from that, would that work?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hello

    1. can you give us the long error message?

The recovery disc can be used to restore the computer to factory settings and I suggest you best computer manufacturer contact to get help for the same.

Also, we cannot use a Windows 7 upgrade disk to perform a clean installation.

Method 1: I suggest to check the following link and check if it helps:

Method 2: Try the following steps to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 from the link below:

  • Change the drive letter of the Partition Recovery

After previous bad experiences in trying to separate the data files program, I took the habit on my previous computer under Windows to create another partition on my hard drive to store the data files. Out of habit I still do on my desktop PC with Windows XP (great program) rather than use the My Documents folder.

I want to do the same thing on my new DV6-3142, I use to work and create a separate partition for my data files. I understand how to create a new partition on the HDD and reassign the drive letters for the existing partitions, but I want to use the letter D for her. However, it is the letter of the drive that is used for the recovery partition.

Can I change the drive letter of the recovery partition to, say R without affecting the operation of the recovery process, or should I leave as D for the recovery of the system to work properly that I should never need her?

    Hello:

You leave the name of the recovery partition and drive letter unchanged and your C drive: of the same name.

If you change these, when you press the F11 key to start the recovery process, the program know what to do.

I am a firm believer of it also have a set of factory recovery disks. For me, it is worth less than the investment of $20.  If your HARD drive fails after the warranty period, (or if you want to upgrade your HARD drive), your recovery partition doesn't help anyway.

  • Is it possible to change a drive letter of the system?

    Hello

    I have XP Pro SP3.

I am interested if it is possible to change a drive letter of the system. My windows was originally installed on c:, but then I found that it is on d:. Maybe it was because I inserted a disc with another Windows in my pc. So, if the computer sees it has letter c: with windows he used d:. I put t know. But 98.5 percent of register use c:. But when I run my computer, then "documents and settings" on d: to run all my accounts on d:. I would like to go back to c: and (change the drive letter c: to something different and then change the d: to c :). I would change a few c: registry values. But how can I do when Windows has probably read files on the wrong drive? If I would disconnect the disk if the Windows will crash. So I want to just change the letters and give it back to its original position.

This problem that I solved with the backup of the machine. A problem occurs when I restore it back. But this facility has been unlucky.

  • How to make a portable USB drive use the same drive letter all the time

    Original title:

I have many removable hard drives from Toshiba.  Use them for photography.  I usually connect simply, transfer photos from the DSLR camera (images raw, very big, not a camera point/rod).  When I plug in, computer automatically selects a player... F, g, H: by M or N.

Then, I use Adobe Lightroom for adjustments.  Once they are imported into Lightroom it keeps track of this record, they were on.

    PROBLEM:

If I unplug the removable hard drive, plug in at a later date, computer can randomly choose a different example M instead of H letter.
LightRoom is so impossible to find photos/images.  I would then have to re - import and start any setting completely from the beginning.

    Question:
How to direct the computer to select the same drive when I plug in a removable hard drive.

Plug in a hard drive removable, computer selects H:, can I import into LightRoom, I disconnect the removable hard drive, a week later I want to make adjustments more photography, connect the removable hard drive and FORCE/DIRECT COMPUTER TO SELECT H: AGAIN (or whatever of the original letter was).

    Hope it makes sense.

  • Through white icon on the desktop and Windows Explorer.

    Hello

A lot of my icons on the desktop and Windows Explorer is more appear a normal icon, instead, they show a white square.

Here is a screenshot of my 3 hard disks with shortcuts on the desktop.

    http://i293.Photobucket.com/albums/m...blankicons.jpg

I tried to solve the problem by doing a rebuild of the cache icon but that did not work.

Anyone would be able to help me solve this problem?

    Thank you.

    Hello

Have you used the utility changes or registry to remove the shortcut arrow overlay?

First make sure the utility is uninstalled and the registry change is removed.

Try this and check if that helps:

    1. right click on a box empty desktop and select Customize.

    2. click on adjust the resolution of the screen.

    3. in the drop-down color menu, select medium (16 bit).

    4. click on apply.

    5. when Windows you asked if you want to keep these settings, click No to restore your 32-bit color depth.

    6. restart your computer.

  • The drive letter for the files on my external drive does not match the designated letter MyWindowsApp, after briefly changing pots

On my Windows 7 laptop, I briefly moved an external hard drive to a USB port to another and then back.

The reader is referred to as F, as it was originally, but since the temporary move the path for some files now show that E.

I went to disk management and confirmed that the drive is detected as F.

This disrupts programs such as Adobe Premiere Elements. It always hurts new information loaded in the disc I load that is in F, but the said path E. The file is clearly on record.

    Hello

I see that, after changing the port, the drive letter for the external drive has changed. I'll help you with this problem.

    1. What is the brand and model of the computer?

    2. what security software is installed on the computer?

You can follow these steps to assign a letter to the external drive and check if that helps.

1 - click on 'Start' button.

2-right-click on "Computer" in the list that appears.

Option 3 - Select the 'manage '. If a warning appears asking for your permission to continue, click on the OK"" button.

4 - Choose "Disk management" in the left column of the computer management window. Find the USB in the list that appears in the gray bottom of the center column.

5-click right on the part of the screen that represents the USB key, and then click the option "letter of change of road and railways.

6 button - click on the 'change' in the window that opens.

    7. ensure that the radio button to "assign the following drive letter:" is selected. To the right of the present is a drop-down list with the drive letters currently not assigned to all of the drives on your local system. If you are not on a network, choose the drive letter you want for your USB key and then click on the OK"" button.

8 - click on the 'yes' button in the confirmation box that appears.

  • How can I correct the wrong drive letter in the Collections only - no files?

I moved my Lightroom Catalog from another computer. All my files are correct, but my Collections records point to a drive letter does not exist, and I get the error that there are duplicates.

How can I fix the drive letter in the Collections only? Find all missing Photos does not work because it applies only to folders and files have the correct drive letter.

    Charles

I think the best thing to do is to copy the old catalog of the any file to the new computer and place it in its own nine empty folder. Then change in Windows, the drive letters E on the new computer becomes G (as it was on the old computer). Then double-click the Lightroom from the old computer catalog to open it, and everything should be good.

  • Can I change the drive letter of the recovery partition?

HP P7-1235, Win7 64 bit running. 1 TB HARD DRIVE

I usually partition my hard drive, so that my data is separate from the operating system and applications.  the operating system is the C: partition, and my data is generally D:.  The problem is: "D:" is used by the recovery partition.

I can change his letter to something else, and recovery still works?

    Hello

Well, everything has been said on this subject and its okay.

It's better to not touch the D: partition, set another letter to your other partiion, if you change the recovery partition, you won't be able to use it.

But you can also do a thing, you can go ahead and create your copy of the recovery disks, just enter some DVD, create your copy of the recovery Image, then you can change the drive letter of the partition Recovery to E: or even delete that.

A copy of records RRS, you can always use them to again state of the plant, and that will reformat all your partitions, create the recovery disks and do what you want and prefer with you D: partiion.

    Thank you
