DRS is in fact the same as vMotion, except that migrations are initiated by vCenter Server, if necessary.

    I have several servers ESX w / their own storage, a VirtualCenter VM virtualized and a virtual SQL server server that contains its performance data.

    I need to migrate from SQL server to a new host, and to make that (inside virtual center of) wo / SAN, HA and DRS, network I need to stop SQL server.  However, this brings me to the problem, when I stop the server SQL, VC, kicking me service accidents and impossible to migrate the virtual machine.

    Is there an easy way to do this in VC?  If not, where can I find best practical instruction on the migration of a VM between ESX servers in VirtualCenter even manually?

    Stop your vCenter Server Service, use VMware Converter to do a V2V. Turn off the VM SQL and 'copy' in its new destination. Power on the "new VM" and start your vCenter Service again, and then delete the "old" VM

    VMware HA strictly require a host "heartbeat" interface

    It is usually the Service Console (for ESX) or the (for ESXi) management interface.

    HA require seamless networking, so don't forget to use the same network address and the same mask.

    VMware DRS is based on vMotion, requiring several things.

    Network side, it requires a vmkernel interface (marked as vMotion) enabled.

    It is better if it is on another network (physical or VLAN).

    Finally, HA and DRS around the virtual computer on other host... So, the network point of view, you must have as homogeneous networks of VM (same VM portgroup label and vSwitch connected to the same physical networks).

  • Networking of Ghost 15 SRD can't find Ethernet card

    I don't know when this started to become a problem, but the support for networking in the Ghost 15 SRD (System Recovery disk) can locate is the ethernet card in my W520. The adapter works correctly under Win7_Pro64. DRS uses WinPE32 to the recovery environment if the driver for the card should be in the operating system. My backup images are stored on my NAS, so recovery now has copy me on a USB in order to apply an image. Any ideas on why it has stopped working?

    I downloaded a new Ghost 15 SRD (15.01) and integrated 32-bit driver for the Intel 82579LM Gigabit (e1c6032 in the NDIS61 folder) network connection. The tool provided in Ghost 15 builds the custom SRD. You can also integrate USB 3.0 drivers as well so that all ports can be used, USB 2.0 ports.

  • Automatic VMotion if the failure of the network Mgmt

    It's probably crazy, but the only stupid questions are the ones that we don't ask, right? We have guests esxi 5.5 with vswitches separated for iscsi, management and vmotion san connections. Each currently has 2 natachasery each. We also have vCenter, HA and DRS.

    We are before pulling a Teddy of the vswitch mgmt and move it to a new vswitch. We are trying to determine if network mgmt on the single host failure, we could live with a brief downtime until you get vmotioned to other hosts. What would be really useful, it's vmotion could be triggered automatically in case of failure of a network of mgmt. Is this possible?

    Sorry, seems that I misunderstood your question. If you plan to have two vSwitches with one uplink, each one for management and one for virtual machines!

    Unfortunately neither DRS nor HA will kick in where the VM network breaks down. You need to make the migration manually or scripted.

  • DRS issues

    Hello, I have a client who has 2 physical servers and a SAN.  they run vSphere 5.5.  I wasn't the one that setup it environment, but I am now responsible.  Ive been so more things and I noticed that a DRS cluster is configured.  DRS is configured as fully automated.  I then noticed that about 5-10 times per day a virtual machine is migrated from one host to another.

    Servers are speced on two well, Dell Poweredge r.620, E5-2609 Xeon 2 processors in each server, 146 GB memory to each server.  About 17 VM distributed between two servers.

    Im trying to figure out why DRS continues to move vms.  This is not always the same virtual machine every day or at the same time.

    There is more then enough memory, most of the servers are allocated around 4 gigs, some with 8, so, not even using half 146 concerts that are in each physical server.

    Then I looked at the CPU on the host at the time of migration and it not even using 30%, then watched the virtual machine CPU time, it has been moved and basically the same thing, about 20% cpu.  So it's not a CPU problem.

    Use of the network seems weak to non-existent at the time of the movements.

    I noticed one thing, it's that there's no assign virtual machines with 4 vCPU assigned to them.  I know in Vmware 3 cpu scheduling was a problem, but vmware 5 is allot better with it.  Could DRS to move the virtual machine around due to the CPU, scheduling issues?

    When I check the tasks and events, it just shows that the DRS migrated virtual machine, it does not say why.  Is there somewhere else that I should check for this info?

    Im not saying this is a problem that the virtual machine is moved because it seem not to be problems with it.  But it seems not exaggerated so that he can move things around so much.  I would just understand why go here

  • Add hosts with existing virtual machines for 'Greenfield' active DRS Cluster

    I'm currently involved in a project for the hypervisor 5.5 and vCenter. Existing are 2 physical servers with redundant everything and 8 SAS hot swap hard drive bays. Initially, 8 bays only 4 have been populated with hard drives. Hard disks have been removed, ESXi 5.0 has been loaded, 4 virtual machines created on each server and all lived happily ever after.

    Now, I would like to upgrade these servers to 5.5... as follows:

    I filled the remaining 4 bays on each server with some hard disks and created a second strip of sufficient capacity (twice the capacity of the 4 original disks). I'm stop servers, past the stripe for starting a new band of readers and installed ESXi 5.5 on the new band. The old Strip also remains in tact, so that I can start to ESXi 5.0, if I set to boot from the original soundtrack or boot to ESXi 5.5 if I boot to the new band (two operating systems starts very well, are properly networked, configured vCenter, etc.).

    When booting in 5.5, he sees his own, new band and is also the soundtrack which is listed as a second data store attached (I think actually I want to make possible migration of the simple VM from the old to the new data store), both are disk space of LSI, Non - SSD, Type VFMS5.

    Panic sets in when I start both computers in 5.5 and the time comes to add 5.5 hosts in a cluster (I also want to test the vStorage DRS and HA) and I've reached the setting of the, "choose Resource Pool." I'm scared to death that choose the first option, "all of the virtual machines in this updated host in the cluster resource pool root. Pools of resources currently present on the host computer will be deleted. "will mean not only a reformatting of the new band which I would like to add to the cluster, but also the still attached old band that includes the data that I want to keep. I don't want to lose data or virtual machines on the soundtrack, but to migrate them in a cluster of 2 servers ESXi 5.5. I was really hoping to migrate data to new tapes on new hosts and then re - purpose boards 2 original (on both computers) as a third table vStorage.

    Issues related to the:

    1. If I choose the option "put all the virtual machines from the host in the pool of resources of the root cluster. Pools of resources currently present on the host computer will be deleted. "with all the drives connected, all my data will be lost?

    2. If I pull the 4 original disks (5.0) and use the option 'put all virtual machines from the host in the pool of resources of the root cluster. Pools of resources currently present on the host computer will be deleted. "that with the new arrays connected (5.5) and then reconnect the old paintings after that the hosts are added to the cluster, will be only the re added still get sucked into the tables and data deleted?

    Last point: by reading all the documents I found it seems strongly suggested to set up guests who have not a deployed virtual machines, that's why I'm going to great efforts to try to keep the new hosts as empty as possible and with 1 port base networking while waiting to complete the configuration. Does it matter if I migrate virtual machines or add them as guests to the ESXi 5.5 before or after I have add hosts to the cluster?

    Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'd go with option C.

    VSAN I would agree has some stupid requirements, but that they were aiming for is almost class company SAN at a decent price by using the SSD as caching tables, but as you said if you don't need not good I would continue to go with a NAS NFS solution.

  • Presentation of the NETWORK card

    We have two servers (Dell R710s) esxi5 in a cluster.  We use all of the separate physical switches, no trunks / VLAN.  We have redundant switches for all networks.

    Today, we have a management interface (management and vmotion), two interfaces iscsi (for redundancy of our SAN access path) and a network of virtual machine interface.  We don't do a lot of vmotion, maybe once a week.  Not DRS, HA or FT today (although we are allowed for all of it).

    We have a total of 6 available physical interfaces.  What is the best way to improve our design?  I know that we could separate management and vmotion?  Or we could go with two interfaces of management/vmotion.  We should also work to our virtual machine network interfaces.

    I think 'ideal' would be the two management two vmotion, two iscsi, two VM networks.  But this would require the purchase of another NIC if that is strongly recommended I consider that.  But if not, what is the best improvement we could make?

    Hi Shane,

    For the modest sum of an extra NIC, I highly recommend splitting all services for full redundancy. Although this is not a for your primary needs, an easy win for double your speed of vMotion is to add a second VMKernel port (requires an additional IP address) to the vSwitch and reverse your card order of failover for each port group. So, in this case, your vSwitch using two uplinks (example: vmnic2, vmnic3) in an active/active configuration, and each port group replaces the switch to use a strategy of active failover / standby. Your first VMKernel port uses as active vmnic2 and vmnic3 as before, and the second uses vmnic3 as active and vmnic2 as before (effectively using the two links actively and ensure redundancy).

    I currently do the following (each service on a separate vSwitch);

    • Management (2 x 1 GB links - active / standby - access ports)
    • vMotion (2 x 1 GB links - active/active with 2 x VMKernel port as described above - access ports)
    • IP_Storage (2 x 1 GB links - active / standby - access ports)
    • Comments of networking (2 x 1 GB ports with tagging VLAN links active/active - junction)

    Each uplink is patched in a separate physical switch for redundancy.

    If you are licensing to the HA, DRS, etc. I would also like to use these features to your advantage

  • "Uneven" with HA/VMotion network configuration

    We run a pretty boring diet and simple where all access layer switches (A, B, C, D) are layer 3 to the base, local access layer VLAN is not available everywhere.  So all the VMS devices we have each of our 4, the cable 5,0 esxi hosts with a trunk on each switch:

    1 1 NIC - trunk to the switch "A".

    2 1 NIC - safe for switch 'B '.

    3 1 NIC - trunk to the C"" key.

    4 1 NIC - trunk to the switch "D".

    all 4 servers are in a cluster on HA (DRS off).  Everything works well and has been for about 9 months in this configuraiton.  We have now added switch 'e '.  The problem is that we cannot add network ports more guests to esxi 4.  What we thought to do was adding more ESXI hosts and wiring those to the 'E' switch and leaving one of the other four turns.  That leaves us with something like this:

    1. ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    2. ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    3 ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    4 ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    5. ESXi to shared resources for pass the 'A' 'B' 'C' and 'E' (resources shared E instead of d)

    6. ESXi to shared resources for pass the 'A' 'B' 'C' and 'E' (resources shared E instead of d)

    I don't have a lot of computers on the switch 'E' which should be virtualized, so I don't want to lose a lot of money on vmware licenses and hardware resources.  However, these machines are begging to be virtualized and I can't move switch 'E' or change their IP address.

    Is it possible to have all 6 ESXI hosts in the same cluster?  even if switching between ESXi hosts may not be symmetrical because 2 of them do not have the same network as the other 4 (or in another way, the other 4 do not have the same 2).  Is it possible to have a control over failover based on available on an ESXI host network?  In other words if I have a VM on ESXI 1 which must pass "D" it cannot fail to ESXI 5.6 because they have no switch "D." yet, a virtual machine on ESXI 5.6 can run out of 1,2,3 or 4 is on the switch 'A' 'B' or 'C '?

    With the help of rules of DRS to force your "E" and "D" VM VM to host correct is the only option that comes to mind, then.

  • Maintenance mode enough to stop SAN and networking?

    We will present some maintenance on your LAN and SAN network that connects our system of blade HP C-7000 with about 14 5.0 ESXi hosts and 3 HP Lefthand P4000 Series clusters (6 knots), 3 groups of VM. Thus, the chassis of C-7000 whole as well as the SAN will lose network connectivity. We do not have a second VM or SAN environment to migrate customers to.

    Our plan is to:

    1. stop all the VM to its customers.

    2. place all hosts in maintenance mode.

    3 temporarily disable HA and DRS to prevent vMotion when the host is brought back to the top of the maintenance mode.

    4 judgment of the SAN.

    5 stop/Perform maintenance on the network LAN/SAN switches.

    6. turn on the network switches.

    7 turn on the SAN.

    8 disable the maintenance for the VM guest mode.

    9. turn computer virtual guests.

    10. turn on HA and DRS.

    This sounds like a good plan? Do you see anything wrong with it? I'm curious to know if maintenance on hosts mode will be sufficient to avoid problems and whether the SAN data store and the road reconnects. I'm afraid that if I completely stop the hosts, it will create problems of network such as vmNIC etc renumbering.

  • How many cards network vmotion

    Hi all

    We are moving from vSphere 4.1 to 5.1 vSphere.  As part of this effort, we have the ability to reconfigure a few things, including the number of network adapters, that we have for vmotion.  I know it can withstand up to 16 x 1 GB NIC.

    Our server environment is not 10 GB yet, but we have a total of 12 x 1 GB NIC ports on most of our ESX (edge 4 x and 2 x 4-port cards) host with ports to save.

    We create the new environment 5.1, is there a best practice around how many ports to configure for vmotion?  I expect the answer will be 'it depends', but I just wanted to get an idea of the factors that should be taken into account for this?

    The number of virtual machines on each ESXi host would be a review?  (For example, when place you it in maintenance mode.)

    We just need to experiment with it ourselves to see what is the right number (for us)?

    Is there a minimum number, we should consider (maybe 2 or 3)?  Should we configure everything as much as we can?

    You have reason... it depends on

    VMotion operations are very fast with vSphere, if you already have a 1 GB dedicated on each host. So if you have a downtime planned for one of your hosts, I think that it would not be a second that is necessary. 8 vmotion operations at the same time could be very well (if you have 10Gb)... but maybe is not worth if you can wait the 30 seconds more...

    If you have a DRS, which uses VMotion to load balance virtual machines between hosts, perhaps a second NETWORK card would be a good idea... but once... If this configuration does not work properly with 1 NETWORK card you should see warnings now in your vCenter.

    So, what best practices talk is how to provide the best possible solution to a scenario with some limitations that you should consider. Availability would be one of the things to consider and one side for availability "acquisition cost" (budget is another milestone to examine each project). As you already have multiple network interface cards, this is not a limitation and a good design could consider having a second NETWORK adapter dedicated to VMotion (two vswitches or the one with the two NIC related to it... depends on if your host has CPU contention or not... otherwise, I would recommend two vSwitches so you HA there too).

    VMotion (at least for me) is not essential... First of all, I would like to confirm that you will be NIC 'extra' for the most critical traffic such as VM presentation or storage.

    It of only my point of view (with some best practices of VMware on it), hope this has helped you!

    In the past, I have disabled HA and DRS implement manual mode and after blackout netwok is over, I'll activate HA and DRS fully automated chenage.

    Y at - it another way to disable HA and ensure that the virtual machine and the host continues to run. Also, I have some virtual machines that either have no vmware tools installed or they must be updated. If all goes well, which does not affect HA.

    just my opinion, but I depend on to untick the box "enable Host Monitoring." Even if that's exactly what this function is, for me, I would feel more at ease by disabling HA all together at an event of network maintenance planned.

  • ESXi 4.1 - DRS & vSwitch NIC w/Zero

    In order to work on some issues to address IP we came up with this solution...

    We have implemented a new vSwitch named VM with ZERO physical NIC network.

    We change the NIC of each VM VDI to the VM network.

    We have installed and configired a Win 2008 R2 server.  His first NETWORK card is connected to a vSwitch with 6 physical network connected to our internal network interface cards.  Its second NETWORK adapter is connected to the VM network as above.

    We run WHAT DHCP networking of VM-related.

    We have configured the traffic between two network routing maps.

    I added the static out the main router routes so for a different subnet, we can get on the network of the VM.

    This configuration is running on our three hosts.  The network of the VM on each host has a different IP subnet.  We also use the DRS through the three hosts.

    I have a test VM VDI.  When I try to manually migrate this virtual machine to one of the other guests, I get a warning that 1 network adapter is a "virtual intranet", which prevents a live migration.  If I can stop the virtual computer and do the migration, I still get the warning, but it allows me to move forward and the VDI VM test works.

    Island of main quest is, if we were to change our production VDI VMs to the diagram above (where 1 network adapter) is the network of the virtual machine (which is considered as a "virtual intranet"), will be able to move the VDI virtual machines to one of the hosts DRS or it will fail?
