Dual Xeon 6-core editing Workstation (criticism/Suggestions)

Hello

I was responsible for assembling or buying a new video editing station capable of injesting HD uncompressed glad of our studio 3 photo, "sweetening" (correction of color, audio settings, etc.), grouping in pre-made and made on several broadcast formats [b] in less than 12 hours [b] animations and 2D graphics.  The system would normally only be dealing with only one live stream (dial-up).  Content length is 40 minutes to 1 hour.

I want to order the parts for this system on Friday. My budget ceiling (for hardware) is 5000 USD (I am currently $ 50 on).  I don't 'plan' to overclock (I don't own the test bench), but could review six months out or almost (once the system worked stable for awhile).

Software used (CS5 all in order of use): Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, still, Soundbooth, Illustrator, InDesign, bridge.

Operating system: Win7 Ultimate 64.

Here is the list of the components that I am looking at:

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
I'm a little worried about the compatibility of the heatsink of heat/mobo/processor/carton.   Also looking for ways to cut without compromising the above calendar.  I spent a bit of time to research on these pieces.  I'm looking at those more warned for pointer on all conflicts, as well as any "Hey, you forgot X." Other component suggestions are also welcome, but wave 'their best' reasoning carry no weight.

OTHER EQUIPMENT on site:
Blackmagic Multibridge Pro (for interfacing with studio) PCI-E x 4 break out box
16 TB (max, currently 2 TB mirrored) NAS for archiving of video media (connected via dual-port ethernet10/100/1000)
Multiple monitors to NTSC calibrated CRT and large format LCD control

Thank you in advance,

Jim G

A couple of notes:

  • I have not yet selected a heat sink.  Unlike the Xeons, I believe the i7s come with a storage unit but I probably want an active receiver.

Noctua NH - D14.

  • I'm debating between the above discs and these 1 TB Samsung Spinpoints which seem to be the default suggestion and are a little cheaper ($80 vs 100 $US).  Thoughts on 6 GB vs 3Gb sata connection or 32 MB vs 64 MB cache?

Samsung Spinpoints have fewer problems with raid, due the WDTLER utility configurations that Caviar Balcks come with.

  • I couldn't bite the bullet on ram 6x4Go. $ 1200 USD (for a stick of six corresponding defined as prejudice suggested) it costs 3 times more than 6x2Go.

24GO is really expensive, and I have the same feelings as you. I would stick with 12 for now.

  • Some reviews say that this motherboard spacing is tight, especially when you try to fill all memory and pci 16 x slot machines.  Is the kind of thing that I have a hard time to visualize well so if there's someone who likes / is good verification of clearances do not hesitate.  The additional component only would be an adapter pci x 4 for our BlackMagic Multibridge which is just an adapter external slot.

Here are some pictures of my systems as well as the intestines, so you can judge for yourself if is is a tight fit. Mind you, my system is filled with 17 discs HARD and two burners for BR.

14 discs at the front and 3 in the back.

Additional 25 cm in the side panel fan.

Sufficient margin to 6 sticks.

No problem with space.

NVIDIA GTX 480 and Areca ARC-1680-iX-12 installed, with an extra fan on the power supply for the additional cooling of the two cards PCIe.

Only a limited some of my discs (there are 14 of them closely mounted) and no problem with temperatures. But I have fans for each disk cage.

After searching the Dell support site I can't find any documentation on this machine.  Would appreciate any info relating to drivers, especially those that could relate to a Windows 2003 Server installation.

These (we saw others recently on the forums) seem to be a special make-up for some company and are not standard servers from Dell.  They seem to be similar to the 'cloud' of Dell servers, but they are also not entirely the same either.  Your best bet would be to go directly to Intel (5000-series chipset probably), Aspeed (integrated graphics), Broadcom (NIC, possibly), etc. for the drivers.  You can also try the drivers from the download pages for models of server 'cloud' so think to install an operating system that is more recent, as Server 2003 is not officially supported for their servers cloud (2008 R2 only).

  • Workstation HP Z620 dual xeon: really only 1 6-pin power connector on the graphics card?

    Hello

I have a question about the HP Z620 workstation.

recently bought a dual xeon with 960 GTX installed on the 6-pin connector.

as I can't find any other power to use nor on the power connector

or nowhere on the set, I wonder how a graphics card must be powered only

    needs

    1 x 8-pin

    or

    1 x 8-pin + 6 pins

    or

    2 x 8 pin?

I know there are some discussions about this in this forum, but I did not understand

the solution. Some said there are adapters to go 6-pin to 8 pin (or 6pin to 2x8pin)?

    But how is that possible?

like many, I know, 75 watts are max of the pci-e connection, 75 other watts Max for 1x6pin.

so plug any adapter, 1x6pin for graphics cards that need much more power would be

According to the standard / danger, right?

and what about graphical installation double?

would be happy if someone around could help me with this.

    best regards

    Chris

The search box on this page by default search only this forum, and it is very convenient.  If you type "extra", you will find a lot of info.

The Z620 has two of these 6-pin cable, and HP got creative and molded into two empty containers down to the black plastic fan holder before.  So, one is being used by you and the second is sitting there plugged and similar, it is used, but it is stored just it did nothing... the fan is powered differently.

These extra HP 6 - pin PCIe power cables are not standard ATX... they are better.  The ATX standard is 75 watts can go up to the card out of the slot, and another 75 watts can come via the additional 6-pin cable.  HP 6-pin cable can do a bit more.

This is the message that you want to read, and there there details that were not in any of the HP manuals that I searched through, but the answer was on the label of Z620 power supply.  12V 18A each, plus adding info on some special HP adapters that allow you to take a HP 6-pin and divided to two 6-pin connectors or cable HP 6-pin connector 8 pins.  Watch here.

  • Sandy Bridge Dual - Xeon better?

    Hello

    I was wondering,

Is a workstation dual xeon that much of a gain of performance with 16/32 (if available) of RAM as an i7 2600 k with overclock?

Xeons may be 5 percent performance gain?

(All with the same configuration of hard disk, video card, etc.: 8 X samsung f3 1 TB raid 5 with raid controller intel, gtx590, vertex3 ssd)

    Thank you

    Sebastian

    Sebastian,

A 8 5 disks raid equipped with a controller Intel is an excellent choice, but the disadvantage is that it requires a PCIe 8 x slot and due to the architecture of P67 motherboards, this also means that the video card slot is then downgraded a PCIe 16 x slot on the PCIe 8 x slot, which reduces video performance. If it's something to worry about you must decide for yourself.

    It simply means:

1 accept the loss of video performance. Rumors say that the loss is not really important, although I've heard others say it's huge. (This Sander of the results which show with PCIe 16 x 5 seconds and 10 seconds with PCIe-8 x on the rendering test). In my book, it is indeed huge.

    or

    2. decide on another platform, such as X 58 and a 970/980/990 CPU. This will give you better performance.

  • AE frustrates me a lot on a Dual Xeon. Need help.

    Hello

I just got a new laptop to work intensively on After Effects CS5:

    -Dual Xeon X 5680
    -36 GB of ram

    -1 SSD win 7 pro 64

    -2 x data Raid0 / data.

The first thing I did was to start a project, I had made on my old computer and which took 5 hours of renders.

So, I put the MP, 3 GB on the left for the other application and define 24x1Go (for each wire). Render. OMG. Estimated time: 7 minutes left...

Taskbar so-called business 100% cpu, and almost 20-33 GB of ram occupation.

And then all of a sudden, after as... a quarter of the coating is done, the company estimated just 5% cpu, Ram business of maybe 5 GB and door to more than 3 hours of estimated time.

I abort rendering and, surprise, some sort of error saying popup:

"After effects warning: a framework did not then only with the help of render multiple images at the same time." Allocate more memory to the memory & multiprocessing preferences background process may fix this problem. (26:: 142)"

Yes, I did. A renewed. And Yes... He did more than 20 images.

I tried a lot of ADJUSTMENT. Nothing is resolved.

Then I started "Googling" and found this:

"Note: . Cache when the memory (the RAM available for the storage of executives of RAM Preview) is almost full, the background process cease rendering and enter a State of low memory consumptionand the foreground process will start made - as if made simultaneously of several executives had been arrested. "This means that the rendering of a RAM preview will fast at the beginning, then will leave speed like rendering passes to a single core processor. here

    The thing is:
-J' have on everything & set the folder cache, active disk cache is Max (500000 MB), and it is not serious.
-If I run my render, interrupted when he falls down and re-launch, where it ended, again and again, I do in my rendering as set of 10 minutes

    MY QUESTIONS ARE:

-Are there a way to set the amount of memory Cache?

-Is it possible to purge automatically?

-Am I forced to stay along my computer to watch-demolition/raise my renders to take advantage of my configuration?

If the answer is NO, NO, YES, well, are engineers/leader adobe dumbs projects? Because it will be a shame BASS to deliver such a no -professional solution.

    - And, agree, in the worst case, because my computer has 2 x 6 hearts and the fact that AE recognize 24 sons, the quantity of memory should I expect to avoid this *?

Thanks for the reading and advice.

So, it's all synthetic? In this case, you should have no problem. However, since you mention 2 individual, you see a normal state due to particles more wher being gnerated, he eats all your memory. This would especially be true - no pun intended - with particles due to their characteristics of shading and possibly temporal sampling of clips accumulate a large amount of custom data. I would look into that.

  • CPUID (1) do not return don't not every bit of functionality on the new Xeon Quad-core processors?

I use VMWare Player 3.0.1 build 227600 and have noticed the same problem on Windows xp and RedHat Linux images a quad-core Xeon. A colleague has seen the same problem using Fusion as well.

On the host operating system (Mac / Windows / Linux) I am getting the output of the CPUID (1) next:

    CPUID (1): eax = 0x000106a5 ebx = 00100800 ecx = 0x009ce3bd edx = 0xbfebfbff x 0

Present exactly the same code within an operating system invited to VMWare Player:

    CPUID (1): eax = 0x000106a5 ebx = 04100800 ecx = 0 x 00980201 edx = 0x0febfbff x 0

Futher code in the library specifically to care little 28 in the edx register, which is located on processors that support hyperthreading or multiple cores (and as we know, the new Xeons support both). My images VMWare configured to run at 2 or 4 processors, but identification CPUID code does NOT see EDX bit 28 as being fixed. Example code for the multi-CPU identification of Intel assumes this bit is defined for topology CPU counts as well. (I won't go into the other differences in ebx, ecx and edx).

The same test code running on a Core 2 Duo on the host operating system product:

    CPUID (1): eax = 0x000006f6 ebx = 01020800 ecx = 0x0000e3bd edx = 0xbfebfbff x 0

Operating exactly the same code in a guest OS in VMWare player on the Intel Core 2 Duo (same image VMWare):

    CPUID (1): eax = 0x000006f6 ebx = 00020800 ecx = 0x0000e3bd edx = 0xbfebfbff x 0

As far as I know, the only variable here is the CPU. The code that runs directly in a welcome what OS behaves properly on the Xeon Quad-core and Core 2 Duo, so the problem seems to be somewhere in VMWare Player.

From what I saw, there were several problems Xeon in VMWare for a while - maybe it's just another one of them.

Has anyone other saw this and have a reasonable and safe solution to correctly detect the core CPU / cache topology if VMWare is the mixture?

If you run your guests with binary translation, we are unable to intercept CPUID executed at CPL3, because that code runs in direct execution.  Under the binary translation, that we can only intercept CPL0 CPUID instructions that we translate.  The title of the material assistance to virtualization, intercept us all the instructions of CPUID, regardless the privilege level.  I suppose you issue CPUID from user code at CPL3.  You should be able to play with the privileged execution mode and see the effects of translation binary vs VT - x.

Under translation binary, if you "clear acceleration", that we can intercept all the instructions of CPUID, because then everything is translated.

  • Set up a photo editing workstation?

Hello. I was wondering what's the recommendation for the establishment of a photo editing workstation.

With video editing and music production: it is recommended for a computer to have several disks. Making the types of readers matter? SSD, HDD? You can configure photoshop on or in conjunction with external (Usb2, usb3, firewire or eSATA) drives? What files flash sticks or memory cards?

That's what I could make of it so far:

Audio workstation (a DAW - DAW)

    C: program Files, D: Audio / files project, E: samples/loops

    Video editing station

Captured video Files, D: program C:, E: project and/or disk images files / final exit, F: (optional) of the Images of disc/final

    Photo editing station:

    C: program Files,

    Thank you.

A player scratch is for temporary files that are not in the RAM. We could also consider a capture by car if your video capture files are usually deleted once completed your video project.

Because the reader scratching did a lot of reads/writes, it is good to have large areas of contiguous space to this topic (ie: not shared with system files or documents... it is ideally a dedicated reader).

  • Comparison of dual Xeon systems - worth the price difference?

I am looking at two different processors and ask about them.

    I consider dual Intel® Xeon® Processor-E5-2699 v4 (22 hearts to 2.2 GHz) and double Intel® Xeon® Processor-E5-2687W v4 (12 cores at 3.0 GHz).

The total overall GHz is no longer with the 44 base against the system of 24 base system, but the core clock speed is significantly higher in the 24 base 44 core system vs System.

That would be better - faster speed single or more overall GHz? What's a better way to playback and editing of speed compared to the other for rendering/encoding/export?

Your E5-2699 v4 with option 22 carrots (total 44 hearts and 88 discussions) is a loser as first is limited by Microsoft to 64 threads software so the second processor must be turned off or hyperthreading diasbled

  • X 300 dual battery fully discharged battery error critical

I kept my Thinkpad X 300 for two weeks and fully discharged batteries. Now when I plug it in, the charging light lights up for about a minute, then turns off again for five minutes. If I press the power button, I see a "critical battery error' BIOS. The two batteries are installed, and both are Lenovo authentic, recently replaced and in good condition. I'm in Chile, where the power is 220 vold, cycle 50, which was not a problem in the past or for my other laptops. Ten minutes before that happened, it worked well.

I thought about it. The wire just before the power supply was frayed internally and worked intermittently. I got a new CAP welded to the and now all is well again.

  • Hardware virtualization enabled on the platform of workstation Hyper V works ok with 7 not with 8

Last week I got an equipped HP XW 6600 renovated workstation of two-processor Xeon E5450 Quad Cores. I played with Windows 2008 R2 Server Evaluation edition and was able to run the Hyper-V platform and run on a Windows 8 Pro evaluation version and a version of Fedora Linux.

Just this morning I put on day of Windows 7 Pro x 64 for Windows 8 Pro x 64, with hardware virtualization enabled in BIOS.

The Hyper-V platform worked well in Windows 2008 R2 Server, but on my new install of Windows 8 Pro (not the trial version but a good licensed one)

The Hyper-V platform feature is grey.

If you move you mouse a message appears:

Cannot install Hyper-V: the processor does not have BATTEN (second-level address translation capabilities. My HP got two Xeon E5450 Quad Core processors.

    What is happening here.

The solution... I found it myself:

    http://social.technet.Microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7704.client-hyper-v-survival-guide.aspx

Initially the message on the internet is that a Hyper V client on a Windows 8 machine requires a processor that has capabilities SLAT (Second level Address Translation). In my case, I have a HP XW6600 with two Xeon Quad Cores - E5450 workstation and how wonderful they are... no SLAT.

The best way I've found that works is the link above.

What you have to do is go to the command line by typing in the search (Windows key + W) charm and the search for CMD.exe and then run as administrator.

Then go to the command-line - C command prompt and type in there, Dism / online Feature /featurename:microsoft - Hyper-V-all, then press on [Enter]

Your system will reboot, reboot, and check all of the features of Windows and you will see the check mark and is more gray.
