Dynamic disks on Windows 7

I created a dynamic disk on Windows 7 64-bit Professional ((6.1.7601) with applicable updates checked 10 minutes ago) by connecting directly to a SATA connection on the motherboard.

I then tried to move the disc to my drive Startech dock (SATDOCK4U3E).  It is connected to my motherboard via USB3.0 connection.  The station has an e-sata connection by my motherboard does not work.  More further by looking at the latest motherboards, e-sata seems to be rare now that there is no Z170 cards mothers registered on TigerDirect or NewEgg.

If I buy an e-SATA card I would be able to use the dynamic disk on my dock player?

I am eager to dynamic disks because I'm moving all my DVD and BluRay discs on the hard drive.  I'll put up several shortcuts to the movies with the bookmarks stored in folders to actors, actresses and directors.  For example, the African Queen shortcuts will be stored under Catherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Morley and John Huston.  As my collection is fairly large (more than 8 500 big crack DVD folders even if some are not complete as the only DVD folder), I am eager to readers as dynamic spanning.  The first single DVD folder filled almost a 4 TB drive.

If Windows 7 is unable to bear this, will be Windows Server 2012?  I think until I have finished using at least 16 hard disks and I would like to clone the disks to a backup set.  If Windows Server 2012 and I have to go for it, Windows Server 2012 supports DirectX 11?

Please forgive me for not to mention Windows 10, but I really prefer to be able to control when I install updates and those who I have install.  I might consider 10 Windows if there are never features on what I want are not on Windows 7.  So far, I have not seen new features I want or need.

Hi Nathalie,.
I suggest you to send your request here.

Thank you.

Well, the dynamic disks are not preserved during the function clone (unlike LVM) volume and partition alignment is possible only in the volume based on cloning, so unfortunately, the answer is 'no '.

    Hi Ken Dunn,

Welcome to Windows 7 Community Forums

Basic disks and dynamic disks are of two types of hard disk configurations in Windows. Most personal computers are configured as basic disks, which are the simplest to manage. Advanced users and it professionals can make use of dynamic disks, which use multiple hard drives in a computer to manage data, usually to improve performance or reliability.

For more information, see the link below:

create and format a hard disk partition:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-SG/Windows-Vista/create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partition

I hopeYou have followed all the steps to shrink a partition correctly but, you encounter a problem, carry out the task. You can go ahead and try the following steps to reduce a volume.

    1. open the Control Panel (all items view)and click the Administrative Tools icon. then close the Control Panel window.

2 in administrative tools, click computer management , and then close the Administrative Tools window.

3 in the left pane under storage, click disk management.

4 in the center pane, right-click the partition that you want to shrink and click on Decrease of Volume.

5 type in how many MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) of space to show available reduction you want to reduce the partition or volume by to use for the new unallocated space, and then click the minimize button.

6 the partition selected (step 4) has now shrunk to create a new empty unallocated space. You can use this new space unallocated to create a new partition with.

7 close the computer management window.

    To create a new partition:

    1. you must first to reduce a partition or a volume create an unallocated partition to use to create the new partition or volume with.

    2. open the Control Panel (all items view)and click the Administrative Tools icon. then close the Control Panel window.

3 in administrative tools, click computer management , and then close the Administrative Tools window.

4 in the left pane under storage, click disk management.

5 in the center pane, right-click on the volume or unallocated partition empty and click on New Simple Volume. (See screenshot above)

6 click on the Next button

7 type in how many MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) you want to use from the unallocated partition to create the new partition, and then click the Next button. (See screenshot below)

NOTE: If you want to use all of the unallocated partition to create the new partition, and then enter all the maximum specified for the partition unallocated disk space. If you use any of the maximum disk space, you can use the left in the unallocted partition space to create another partition with.

Select an available drive letter you want to assign to the new partition in the computer, and then click the Next button.

9 enter a volume label name that you want for the new partition, check the perform a quick format , and click on the Next button

    Click on the Finish button

11 the new partition or volume has been created with the space in partition assigned unallocted (step 7).

12 close the computer management window

Check if you perform the same steps as above and us post if you have any other questions.

Hope the above information is helpful.

  • Convert disk dynamic disk Basic without data loss on Windows 8?

I have a laptop with a 500 GB hard drive. I have windows 8 is installed. How can I convert this disk to dynamic disk to basic disk? Is this some Partttion managers as EaseUs allow convert dynamic disk to basic disk to the disk on which the operating system is installed?

    Hi harsh,

The disk must not have any volumes nor contain no data until you can change to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, back it up or move it to another volume, before converting the disk a basic disk.

Note: If you convert Dynamic Drive reader Basic with Windows installed Windows does not start.

For more information, see change back to a basic disk dynamic disk. (Valid also for Windows 8)

  • How to convert a dynamic disk to a basic?

How to convert a dynamic disk to a basic? I can't really deleat the C and readers of the system, and if so, how?

    Hi Brad,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for the query display.

According to the description, it seems that you want to convert a dynamic disk to Basic.

However, we need more information about the issue to help you better.

Please help me to answer these questions.

1 how many partitions are on the hard drive?

2 is installed Windows on drive C?

    3. you have any operating system installed on the hard drive?

To convert the dynamic disk to basic, here are some steps that you can try.

You can try to convert the dynamic disk drive basis (except your drive C :) using the Diskpart.exe in the command line. By following these steps, you can avoid reinstalling Windows XP. But if you want all the hard disk as a single partition, then proceed as follows.

Note: Before formatting the hard drive or perform the steps, back up your data to an external storage device.

Steps to convert dynamic disk to basic

    a. press Windows key + r on the keyboard and in the immediate window, type cmd.exe

    b. in the command prompt and type D iskpart .

    c. at the Diskpart prompt, type list disk . Note the number of the disk you want to convert to dynamic.

    d. at the Diskpart prompt, type select disk . (select the dynamic disk you want to convert.)

    e. at the Diskpart prompt, type clean to remove all volumes on the disk.

    (f) then, at the Diskpart prompt, type: convert base to begin to restore the disk to basic training.

Respond us if you have any queries with hard drive problems and we will be happy to help you.

  • Y we can convert dynamic disk to basic again after having already converted to dynamic?

We all know that the default value of the hard drive is (Basic) and some timed Let's convert in cuz our uses (dynamic), my question is how can we convert in new Basic or it's impossible?

    Thank you

It could be the case that you cannot remove the active OS partition / volume.  If this is the case, try to create a "Hirens Boot CD" and the start of this CD.  In the first start screen, choose "Mini XP.  Once it starts, follow the instructions in the following article:

"To change a dynamic disk to basic disk back.

To create a Hirens Boot CD, download the ".zip" file extract in a folder and double-click the ".cmd" file within the archive extracted.

You will need to re - install windows after you complete these steps.

  • Re-installed XP Pro. Now can not access data dynamic disk on the HD 2

Hey all. Good here we will...

My system has TWO SATA drives. A year ago I converted both Dyamic discs thinking I could use them in a RAID, but decided to do it. So, since that time I am using OS + critical data Disk1 and Disk2 as a backup (compressed image of Disk1).

My question is now, I have re-installed XP Pro on disk 1 and my computer does not allow me to see the data in Disk2. XP Pro detects disc 2 as "base" and asks me to format it. However, my BART PE bootdisk shows 2 disk as dynamic and he can't read.

This is where I am. I'm trying to understand how to read data from disk 2. Whether some use of software 3rd party or a way to get XP Pro to see the data.

Check the knowledge base on best practices with dynamic disks.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/search/?adv=1
    For example.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/329707

"Dynamic disks use a private disk region to maintain a logical disk manager (LDM) database, which contains the types of volumes, offsets, memberships and the drive letters of each volume. The LDM database is also replicated, so that each dynamic disk knows about every other dynamic disk configuration. This feature makes dynamic disks more reliable and recoverable than basic disks. »

You suggest that your second drive can still have a copy of his information LDM. In other words, as long as you did not "commit a sin" as defined in this article.

See 'import records' here and see if 'Foreign' is displayed for the drive in disk management.
Disk management is where you want to look for info on the disc.

  • New partition resulted in dynamic disk

When I reduce my disk to create a new partition ehit Manager of tasks, I ended up a dynamic disk of Pentecost... because at the end he ask me... what may be the problem because the windows works just fine... tnx...

Here is an explanation of the difference between the basic disks and dynamic: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-basic-and-dynamic-disks and here is a much more detailed and the much better version if you really want to know the differences:http://www.dynamic-disk.com/dynamic-disk-resource.html.

If I were you, I would like to convert it to a basic training using the following procedures before you begin to add data to it and use it.

You cannot use the task for disk partition manager or convert dynamic to the base - do it with disk management (I assume that it was just a typo).

  • How to install the dynamic disk volume and base set

I have 500 GB of HARD drive.

How can I convert a 1 and 2 in basic and volume 3 in Dynamics.

Please tell me something that is free of cost, and I don't want to use a software to do this.

    Hi Lynda,

I'll be happy to help you with the problem you have with the computer.

To create a dynamic disk volume, you must convert basic dynamic first of all disks. How to convert the basic dynamic disk?

    1. connect you as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

    2. right click on my computer > manage > storage > disk management.

    3. in the lower pane, right-click the basic disk you want to convert, and then click on convert to dynamic disk. You must right-click the gray area that contains the title of the disk on the left side of the details pane.

Warning: After you convert a disk from a dynamic disk basic, local access to the dynamic disk is limited to editions of Windows Windows 2000 at the latest. In addition, after you convert a disk from basic to dynamic disk, the dynamic volumes cannot be changed to partitions. You must first delete all dynamic volumes on the disk and then convert the dynamic disk to Basic.

    Thank you.

  • Try to mirror a disk with Windows 7 Professional

I would like to mirror an external drive with a second external dive.  I can't find documentation on how to accomplish this task.  The main drive is configured as dynamic with a simple partition and it contains data.  I tried different configurations of the mirror planned but none seem "ungrey" option to add a mirror on the main disk drive.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.
What more frustrating, it is only while creating an interlaced together in place is documented, mirroring doesn't seem to be.

    Hi Kfrey,

    Connect to the remote computer

    1. connect you as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

    2. click on start and then click Control Panel. Click performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools and then double-click computer management.

    3. right click on the (Local) computer management and then click on connect to another computer.

    4. click on another computer, type the name of the computer to which you want to connect, and then click OK. Or, click Browse to locate the computer, and then click OK twice.

The computer from the remote computer management window is displayed. Expand storage (if it is not already expanded) and then click Disk Management.

Create a mirrored on the remote computer Volume

    1. in the disk management window, right-click on the space unallocated on one of the dynamic disks in which you want to create the volume mirrored and then click New Volume.

    2. in the new Volume Wizard, click Next.

    3. click on the mirrored volume, and then click Next.

    4. under all available dynamic disks, click the disk in which you want to host the mirror, and then click Add. Verify that the disks in which you want to create a mirrored volume are listed in the selected dynamic disks box.

    5. in the size box, specify the amount of unallocated disk space to use for the volume, and then click Next.

6 assign a drive letter or path, and then click Next.

    7. set the options for formatting that you want to use, and then click Next.

    8. check that the options that you selected are correct, and then click Finish. The mirrored volume is created and appears in the dynamic disks in the disk management window.

9 leave the management of the disks on the remote computer.
