How to enable SNMP on a VMWare ESX servers
We have a couple of vmware esx 3.5 update 2 hosst and look at the upgrade to vSphere before the end of the year. However, we have an obligation to enable SNMP traps SNMP can be captured for performance monitoring.
Is this just a cse of
.1 login as root
(2 edit the snmpd.conf file and add "rocommunity xxxx" where xxxx is your read-only community string). The file is usually located in the/etc/snmpd.
3 restart the agent SNMP - /etc/init.d/snmpd restart
Hello
Implimentation SNMP in vSphere 4.0 differs from ESX 3.5.x.
You need to download a zip file containing all of the SMIv2 (RFC2578/STD58)
compliant MIB modules for use with ESX/ESXi and vCenter with
related application notes. These MIB modules support all ESX, ESXi
and vCenter product releases through version 4.0.
For SNMP configuration information, see Chapter 5 (configuration of hosts and vCenter Server: SNMP and vSphere)
in the vSphere Basic System Administration guide.

Enable SNMP to send blocked due to the loop network interface
Dear community,
We had a customer who has created a loop on his layer access and STP blocked some interfaces in order to protect the network.
Normal behaviour until now, but we would like to receive the device, when these events occur, usually when an interface is set to err - disable or close (I guess it's more err - disable).
We noticed that somehow the concerned interface was sometimes stay down without checking back and maybe change her status.
I tried a few commands such as:
Server enable SNMP traps stpx root-incompatibility incompatibility loop-inconsistent
Enable SNMP-Server intercepts the port security (this is probably more for quantity of excess on the interface MAC)
I also found a nice MIB called Cisco-Err-disable
But I have the feeling that I missed something on the side of the device,
Any help in setting this up would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you
STP will not put the port in err-disable mode. The mib, CISCO-ERR-DISABLE report when the port is placed in a State of err - disable one of these events published in the MIB:

Hello
We had 2 problems with our new servers ESXi 5.1 has:
1 vMotions to fail 13%
2. some of the virtual machines are not accessible through their consoles. (Impossible to contack MKS)
To resolve these issues, I came across the following KB:
I did the step necessary and even created a new host profile where the SNMP agent is disabled. However, on a successful remmediation of the new profile, .trp files continue to accumulate in/var/spool/snmp (above 3000 files in 2 days) and I have no idea what creates these files of trap and why.
Anyone can shed light on this issue?
This is solved in the latest version of vSphere 5.1 update 1.
Release notes: https://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vsphere-esxi-51u1-release-notes.html
ESXi host 5.x appears disconnected in vCenter Server and logs the ramdisk (root) is full message in the vpxa.log file
If Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is unable to handle the number of trap SNMP (.trp) files in the foldersnmp/var/spool/snmp of ESXi, the host may appear as disconnected in vCenter Server. You may not be able to perform all the tasks on the host computer.
The vpxa.log contains several entries that are similar to the following:
WARNING: VisorFSObj: 1954: unable to create the file
/var/run/VMware/f4a0dbedb2e0fd30b80f90123fbe40f8.lck for vpxa process because the table of the inode of the ramdisk (root) is full.
WARNING: VisorFSObj: 1954: unable to create the file

Impossible to activate SNMP on my machine 5.0 ESX
Hello
Can someone guide me how to enable SNMP on my ESX Server 5.0.
I tried to follow the steps provide in the VMware documentation but I can not find the SNMP option in the Configuration-> Security Profile-> properties.
attached to the screenshot for reference.
I tired to activate the online service via putty in giving /etc/init.d/snmpd start cmd, but I couldn't find snmpd under /etc/init.d as below.
/ etc/vmware # /etc/init.d/s
/etc/init.d/sensord /etc/init.d/slpd
/etc/init.d/sfcbd /etc/init.d/storageRM
/etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog
/ etc/vmware # /etc/init.d/
Let me know if everything works around available for me to enable SNMP.
Thanks in advance,
Ravi
U cannot activate SNMP on ESXi as the full package of SNMP has been deleted because of the removment of the "Red Hat" management cosnole
the old howerver of ESX installation have the complete package.
ESXi, however, can send snmp traps

ESXi server of the poll with Solarwinds Orion NPM
I'm under ESX1 4.1 U2 and we just bought Orion NPM 10.2.2. I connected with the success of the host of Orion by the creation of a local on the ESXi host user and give permissions ReadOnly. It works all fine Orion is the CPU, MEM, survey disks, the virtual machine to its customers, ect... However the condition of the material shows ' material vote failed: chassis Polling (class CIM_Chassis) has failed.» Unable to establish a session with all the identification information provided" I am able to fix this by assigning the Administrator role to my local user.
That is the problem. I don't want to give this account full administrator permissions to monitor my hosts. I tried cloning of the Administrators role, but he doesn't let Orion survey CIM hardware stats. What am I missing why the default role works but not the clone? What is different?
SNMP is the right answer, because I got exactly the same problem.

Don't know if there are other settings of snmp that must be put in place or I missed something
Thank you for your help
Hello
Can you try to set up OMNM like this http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-switches/f/866/t/19535001.aspx
Set up two profiles of authentication in OMNM. ((1) SNMP v1/v2c and used the SNMP community string, I put on the Force 10 switch 2) Telnet/SSH using the switches telnet user ID, password and the password 'Enable' leaving him activate ID empty.

I installed Cacti on ubuntu 14.04 and I'm trying to add a Cisco sg300.
If the switch is configured like this:
Server SNMP My Office location
SNMP Server contact [email protected] / * /
SNMP community - server MyC0mmun1ty ro 192.168.10.25 view by defaultI then in the settings of the device
SwitchName Description
The switch ip host nameCisco to host model router
number of threads 1
disable the unchecked hostshot detection snmp device operating time
ping timeout 400
try again to pin 1SNMP version 2
Community SNMP MyC0mmun1ty
SNMP port 161
SNMP timeout 500
OIDs maximum 10from the cactus Server (192.168.10.25) if I have
Nmap - sU Pei 161 switch ip of see:
161/udp snmp openalso on the sg300 I had to enable snmp in the security settings where ssh/telnet etc. is and have saved the config.
But watch the cactus
SNMP information
SNMP errorOK, I suggest you enable the SNMP agent on unrestricted IP switch, IE replace command:
snmp-server community MyC0mmun1ty ro 192.168.10.25 view Default
with the command:
snmp-server community MyC0mmun1ty ro view Default
and again snmpwalk. If it will work now, your SNMP to Cacti server applications are sourcing from another IP than 192.168.10.25 (your Cacti server configured several IP?).

Behavior of the expected multiple SNMP server host?
Hi all
I'm working on a network by which our client has a SNMP existing system on the control switches.
I add our own SNMP device to the environment, but I want to make sure it does not replace or remove their existing configuration.
My thoughts are, that if I enable snmp-server host x.x.x.x communitystring
Will it overwrite their existing snmp server host configuration
Can anyone confirm this? Especially for 3750's and 2960 x. #.
Thank you
Nick
Hi, no it will not overwrite the existing configuration of snmp.

SNMP traps may explain PPPoE users on a router?
For purposes of verification, I want to use SNMP traps to account for PPPoE users on a router? I don't see a way to do this. Is is possible? If not, what is the best way to go about this?
"Server enable snmp traps pppoe" is not providing this type of info, any more than I think it should anyway. OTOH, if you configure "accounting aaa" global or "ppp accounting" by interface, the NAS (your rtr) can report these modules to the server (RADIUS or GANYMEDE) AAA:
rtr# show accounting
Active Accounted actions on tty0, User (not logged in) Priv 1
Task ID 1, EXEC Accounting record, 00:35:16 Elapsed
task_id=1 service=shell
Active Accounted actions on tty33, User ellie Priv 1
Task ID 16, EXEC Accounting record, 00:00:17 Elapsed
task_id=16 service=shell
Active Accounted actions on Interface Async33, User tom Priv 1
Task ID 17, Network Accounting record, 00:00:13 Elapsed
task_id=17 service=ppp protocol=ip addr=10.0.0.1
Then it's a matter of instrumentation of a solution on the AAA alert/report server however you want for the listeners. I think that SNMP trap would not be the first choice as a mechanism of benefit in this case, as there are a lot more simple options on a server.
Alternatively, if you believe this info can be obtained with some show commands on the router itself and the router supports EEM, I'd want a solution based EEM on the other Network Management forum (https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/network-infrastructure/network-management), which can certainly generate an SNMP trap as a result.
