Enable vMotion, vSphere 5.0

Hello

I'm an intern and I must implement a cluster architecture I put in place of a cluster on two ESXi with vSphere 5.0.

I must implement vMotion for VM hot migration

Is what someone can me pour orianter on the procedure enable vMotion on hosts?

Thanks in advance

Robin

With the ESX on optative have addresses vMotion on the same subnet as the management. With the ESXi, is obliged to have a separate subnet for the vMotion...

I had the problem during my migration en ESXi... and it was the answer to VMWare...

  • How to enable vMotion, if you bought Essentials Plus 4.0?

    Hi all

How to enable vMotion, if you have bought the old Essentials 4.0 with the support of SnS, which was without vMotion?  I just need to upgrade to version 4.1 for more Essentials?

I use the same license key?

    Excuse me?

    vCenter 4.1 can handle: ESX (i) 3.0 - 4.1

vCenter 4.0 allows you to manage: ESX (i) 3.0 - 4.0 (with some versions not supported as 3.0.3 U1)

    vCenter 2.5 can manage: ESX (i) 2.5 to 3.5

I guess you mean vCenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5? There was just no version of vCenter called 3.x. She moved from 2.5 to 4. You will definitely need a vCenter 4.1 to manage guests 4.1. I bet all my biscuits on it

    Dear forum,

I would like to ask a simple question...

A customer to lay mines on vMotion in vSphere Standard edition.

How they get this vMotion functionality. They are currently serving vsphere 4.0 U1.

They need to upgrade the engine first (4.0 U1 to 4.1)?

    Thank you...

    PS:

vSphere 4.0 Standard, the vMotion feature edition is not available.

Yes, your customer must migrate to version 4.1 for the vmotion feature

  • Assign the host favorite for comments, but still enable VMotion

I will try to find a way to define a host for a specific customer, but do not want to tie it with a CPU affinity because I want what he VMotion failure complete host.  I would particularly like the ability for that person can be restored in the preferred host, once it's upward and available.

This comment works our filtering URL and utlilizes a mirror port on a switch for the Protocol part of filtering.  Our Dell PowerConnect switches do not reflect a single to several ports of destination source port, then when that guest is unable to a new host it loses the configuration mirrored and that they can watch is no longer for protocol violations.  If the customer moves to a new host, it will always be because it is integrated with the firewall for this function of filtering for HTTP/HTTPS/FTP traffic.  It is not an option to not have VMotion for this virtual machine because if the virtual machine goes down, URL filtering fails open, allowing anyone to do anything.

Y at - there no way to set that guest1 is now on Host1 and should not move except Host1 completely falls or goes into Maintenance Mode?  Then when Host1 comes back online, guest1 could exit the ship and return to Host1.

I think that you need to setup your HA/DRS parameters

Configure the "Partially automated" DRS - this will offer only what

you need to do with the virtual machine, but not automatically Vmotion them... If

HA is configured this way, in the event of a host failure, the virtual machine on the

host must be migrated and restarted within the cluster.

I know you can set up rules to keep vm etc together, but I do not know how to move autimatcially back to, say his host "home"? ....

  • VMotion, Vsphere 4.1 - Cross Cable.

    Hello

I essential vmware more I have upgraded to 4.1, have only two hosts:

is a good idea to use a crossover cable to connect two hosts directly?

Cheap and cheerful - why not good solution. Just remember that you have no resistance if the NETWORK card stops working - but this is probably not a big problem for you.

  • Network [vSphere 4.1] load balancing and failover vMotion

    GoodMorning everyone.

I have some doubts about the configuration of the network for vMotion in vSphere 4.1

I know that I can activate a single portgroup VMkernel for vMotion on the single host, but can I have this portgroup in a vSwitch with two or more physical NIC attached.

Currently, I managed to have a vSwtich with vMotion and management of trade wth two NICs (see attachment).

Both NICs works very well with the recovery for both exchanges.

I would switch to a vSwitch with multiple network cards and I have some doubts.

It seems that I could configure it... but the load balancer for vMotion supported on vSphere 4.1?

And also, have the protgroup of vMotion in a switch with several network cards, is there a way to check what physical nic is currently used by vMotion?

I am currently under a license from the company.

Thank you all for your help.

vMotion for vSphere pre 5 does not support Multi-NIC, in vSphere 5, you can configure several VMKernel enable vMotion and select different Nic Active and load balance between the two vmnic, but unfortunately not in vSphere 4.x

For the management of ESXi, if you set active on both network adapters, you not to cross any active advantage / standby because it will only use on vmNIC, unless there is still a failure... but 1 vmNIC just because bandwidth is usually not a problem for the ESXi management only.

So the answer: upgrade to vSphere 5 for multi-nic vMotion and don't worry ESXi management as an active NETWORK card is more than enough bandwidth,.

  • vSphere 6.0 license Standard downgrade then upgrade

    Hi guys,.

Just a quick I'm not quite clear on if possible.

Basically, I have two hosts of ESXi, an old box of 5.5 running on vSphere essentials license and a new box of 6.0 running with the standard license for vSphere.  The new server is not yet in production, and is associated with a San (current storage on the 5.5 server is local)

We have a 4 CPU license for vSphere 6.0 standard, so what I was hoping to do was downgrade 2 CPU of this license to 5.5 and apply it on the 5.5 server, this will enable vMotion and let me live migrate servers of local storage for the new San and across to the new host.  I then tried to shut down the old Server 5.5, rebuild fresh with ESXi 6.0 and then upgrade the number of processors 2 license 6.0 who have been downgraded, back to 6.0.

Is it possible to do so without incurring a cost?  I see that a downgrade is possible for free, but I'm not 100% clear on the component to upgrade.  Basically, I wanted to do it this way to avoid blackouts, but if it comes to it, then I can plan a failure, just try to scope out right now.

    Thank you.

I was wrong. I just checked and you can select 'Upgrade quantity'. I learned something new today.

From the point of view upgrade/downgrade you can make it back as long as you have a valid support contract.

  • with local storage vMotion

What are my options to enable vMotion with local storage with vSphere 6.0? I have only 2 servers, so virtual SAN is not an option.

    Hello

Unfortunately, Fault Tolerance requires shared storage. At this point, it is not possible to perform ft on local storage.

    Here is a practical guide.

  • Essentials for vSphere Standard - correct license?

We are running 3 x machines hosts vsphere 4.1 essentials connected to a server vCenter (not the essentials vcenter server) running standard. We know that if we improve these host machines we cannot be handled by our server vCenter (v5.5) due to a change of license and it is like not possible.

After the execution of these 3 guests with Essentials, we now seek to introduce environmental vmotion and storage vmotion. Can you confirm for me that we just need to buy the right amount of vSphere Standard licenses?

It doesn't seem to be an upgrade from Essentials to vSphere standard. Team VMware licenses have already recommended to talk to our partners and after that they recommend to purchase:

VMware vSphere with operations management [Corporate - upgrading: VMware vSphere 5 Essentials to vSphere Operations Manag Std Acceleration Kit of 6 processors]

It is also much more expensive and much more than necessary.  I believe that it is unnecessary to go this route because it is much more expensive than buying the vSphere licensing standards.

Can anyone confirm that we just need to buy the right amount of vSphere Standard licenses in order to manage them with vCenter Server Standard to enable vmotion between these hosts?

I understand that acceleration kits are grouped to be more profitable, but because you already have a license of vcenter standard you are right, you will need the correct number of vSphere ESXi licenses which is sold per CPU - so if your three hosts are dual cpu you will need 6 licenses

  • How to activate the vmotion via the api?

  • procedural VMotion

    Hello

Want to know procedure below is correct or not when to activate the vMotion in vCenter

I have two Server esxi, they are esxi A & B esxi, they have their own storage, its not to share the same storage, and I want to move a vm machine esxi a data store to the esxi B data store

    1. create an internet VMkenrel on the two server esxi with vMotion enabled.

    2. create a new standard switch

(3 Add a network card to the active card switch (does average he needs to use the second physical server card?) if I have only one physics connected with the cable network card, it works)

4 enable vMotion for this port services

    5. Please provide an IP address of prople to the new port (connect a live on a cable directly between the two hosts) and choose a subnet 192.168.1.0/24

    6. now you should have a new vSwitch with a dedicated for vMotion VMKernel port

7, go to vCenter, esxi n choose a machine vm I want to move, do a right-click "migrate."

    8. click on "change host".

    9. Select destination resource "esxi B.

    10 fact

    Keith

As others have said make sure you vSphere 5.1 and Webclient to get this working

(it means he must use the second physical map server?) If I have only one physics connected with the cable network card, it works)

Yes, even with single physical NETWORK card, you can make this work... Create a second on the vSwitch Vmkernel port and enable vMotion for this portgroup vmkernel

  • VMotion and VCA

Is CVS required for VMotion on vSphere ESXi 4.1 Update 1? You have to have in place for clusters enable VMotion on vSphere ESXi 4.1 Update 1? I have a couple of hosts who I am reformatting for vSphere and I get a message that the hardware of the host CPU does not support CVS. It is a host that does not use provisioning, so I really don't need CVS.

    Thank you.

VCA is not necessary for vMotion, if processors are compatible - EVC is used when you have a cluster of ESX/ESXi hosts with different generation of processors.

You have not need for clusters configured for vMotioin but if the processors are different families and require the EVC you will need a cluster

VCA has also nothing to do with Thin Provisioning.
