  • How to enable vMotion, if you bought Essentials Plus 4.0?

    Hi all

How to enable vMotion, if you have bought the old Essentials 4.0 with the support of SnS, which was without vMotion?  I just need to upgrade to version 4.1 for more Essentials?

I use the same license key?

    Excuse me?

    vCenter 4.1 can handle: ESX (i) 3.0 - 4.1

vCenter 4.0 allows you to manage: ESX (i) 3.0 - 4.0 (with some versions not supported as 3.0.3 U1)

    vCenter 2.5 can manage: ESX (i) 2.5 to 3.5

I guess you mean vCenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5? There was just no version of vCenter called 3.x. She moved from 2.5 to 4. You will definitely need a vCenter 4.1 to manage guests 4.1. I bet all my biscuits on it

  • Assign the host favorite for comments, but still enable VMotion

I will try to find a way to define a host for a specific customer, but do not want to tie it with a CPU affinity because I want what he VMotion failure complete host.  I would particularly like the ability for that person can be restored in the preferred host, once it's upward and available.

This comment works our filtering URL and utlilizes a mirror port on a switch for the Protocol part of filtering.  Our Dell PowerConnect switches do not reflect a single to several ports of destination source port, then when that guest is unable to a new host it loses the configuration mirrored and that they can watch is no longer for protocol violations.  If the customer moves to a new host, it will always be because it is integrated with the firewall for this function of filtering for HTTP/HTTPS/FTP traffic.  It is not an option to not have VMotion for this virtual machine because if the virtual machine goes down, URL filtering fails open, allowing anyone to do anything.

Y at - there no way to set that guest1 is now on Host1 and should not move except Host1 completely falls or goes into Maintenance Mode?  Then when Host1 comes back online, guest1 could exit the ship and return to Host1.

I think that you need to setup your HA/DRS parameters

Configure the "Partially automated" DRS - this will offer only what

you need to do with the virtual machine, but not automatically Vmotion them... If

HA is configured this way, in the event of a host failure, the virtual machine on the

host must be migrated and restarted within the cluster.

  • question of vMotion and storage vMotion

I have everything set, UCS 5108, ESXi host, VMs, I don't have a SAN connection yet... My question is if I can enable vMotion? Let's say I have a cluster in vCenter, within this group, I have attached two ESXi host, win2008 VM in an ESXi and running, I can migrate (using vMotion) as win2008 VM to an another ESXi without connection SAN?

How storage vMotion to an ESXi host hardrive to an another ESXi host hardrive? Is this possible?

Note: I have not connection SAN in this configuration

One of the requirements for vMotion is shared storage that would allow visibility between source and destination ESXi hosts. (SAN, iSCSI or NFS).

  • Add Vkernal port vmotion.

    Hello

I don't want to add VMkernel so can enable Vmotion, but want to confirm everything first, before changing the production server.

It's my Vswitch for ISCSI network:

    ISCSI.PNG

So I have to split first vswitch 2 with 1 NIC for the 1 subnet and add vmkernal on each switch.

or can I simply the add-on, give 1 IP address and it would work?

    Thanks in advance.

  • procedural VMotion

    Hello

Want to know procedure below is correct or not when to activate the vMotion in vCenter

I have two Server esxi, they are esxi A & B esxi, they have their own storage, its not to share the same storage, and I want to move a vm machine esxi a data store to the esxi B data store

    1. create an internet VMkenrel on the two server esxi with vMotion enabled.

    2. create a new standard switch

(3 Add a network card to the active card switch (does average he needs to use the second physical server card?) if I have only one physics connected with the cable network card, it works)

4 enable vMotion for this port services

    5. Please provide an IP address of prople to the new port (connect a live on a cable directly between the two hosts) and choose a subnet 192.168.1.0/24

    6. now you should have a new vSwitch with a dedicated for vMotion VMKernel port

7, go to vCenter, esxi n choose a machine vm I want to move, do a right-click "migrate."

    8. click on "change host".

    9. Select destination resource "esxi B.

As others have said make sure you vSphere 5.1 and Webclient to get this working

(it means he must use the second physical map server?) If I have only one physics connected with the cable network card, it works)

Yes, even with single physical NETWORK card, you can make this work... Create a second on the vSwitch Vmkernel port and enable vMotion for this portgroup vmkernel

  • Network [vSphere 4.1] load balancing and failover vMotion

    GoodMorning everyone.

I have some doubts about the configuration of the network for vMotion in vSphere 4.1

I know that I can activate a single portgroup VMkernel for vMotion on the single host, but can I have this portgroup in a vSwitch with two or more physical NIC attached.

Currently, I managed to have a vSwtich with vMotion and management of trade wth two NICs (see attachment).

Both NICs works very well with the recovery for both exchanges.

I would switch to a vSwitch with multiple network cards and I have some doubts.

It seems that I could configure it... but the load balancer for vMotion supported on vSphere 4.1?

And also, have the protgroup of vMotion in a switch with several network cards, is there a way to check what physical nic is currently used by vMotion?

I am currently under a license from the company.

Thank you all for your help.

vMotion for vSphere pre 5 does not support Multi-NIC, in vSphere 5, you can configure several VMKernel enable vMotion and select different Nic Active and load balance between the two vmnic, but unfortunately not in vSphere 4.x

For the management of ESXi, if you set active on both network adapters, you not to cross any active advantage / standby because it will only use on vmNIC, unless there is still a failure... but 1 vmNIC just because bandwidth is usually not a problem for the ESXi management only.

So the answer: upgrade to vSphere 5 for multi-nic vMotion and don't worry ESXi management as an active NETWORK card is more than enough bandwidth,.

  • VMotion and VCA

Is CVS required for VMotion on vSphere ESXi 4.1 Update 1? You have to have in place for clusters enable VMotion on vSphere ESXi 4.1 Update 1? I have a couple of hosts who I am reformatting for vSphere and I get a message that the hardware of the host CPU does not support CVS. It is a host that does not use provisioning, so I really don't need CVS.

    Thank you.

VCA is not necessary for vMotion, if processors are compatible - EVC is used when you have a cluster of ESX/ESXi hosts with different generation of processors.

You have not need for clusters configured for vMotioin but if the processors are different families and require the EVC you will need a cluster

VCA has also nothing to do with Thin Provisioning.

    Someone at - it ideas?

I guess you took the function of the DistributedSwitch module included with the book?

The VMHost parameter must be an object of VMHost.

    Try it as

    $esx = get-VMHost xxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    Get-DistributedSwitchNetworkAdapter - VMHost $esx - PortGroup "vMotion" - DistributedSwitch "dv1.

  • activation of vmotion

For some reason when I try to migrate (vmotion only) a machine from one host to another there "Change Host" gray and under it says:

"vMotion is not enabled on the virtual machine host.  To migrate the virtual machine, enable vMotion on the host or power off the virtual machine.

I think that everything is permitted for vmotion.  My group has 'Spin on VMware HA' checked so as to "Turn on VMware DRS" checked.  I have my two hosts added to the cluster.  What should I check first?

OK... Uncheck Activate the vMotion, say ok, then go back and turn it back on.
