ESX 3.5 to 4.0 update

Hi there,

I intend to upgrade our ESX 4.0 host from3.5. We are running 4 x ESX 3.5 shared host with SANstorage Ent and the VC running on a virtual machine. These host takes care of 35 virtual machines. I plan toupgrade the client and VC to 4.0 and then use the mangr update to upgrade to the home.

Question: how long can I keep the current VM on the new host before you have to upgradethem. I want to improve those VMS in addition to 2 weeks of small groups. Y at - it anyproblems with it.

Thank you

I had a similar project.  There is no problem with this approach that I know.

It is to take a few restarts to get all the vm up to version 7 of the hardware reviews.  Once you have upgraded you server VC upgrade then VM tools, then stop. Hardware level, reboot.  Also, it is worth to note the IP address of the host to the case where.  I read that some people lost there static IP addresses, but I have not personally experienced this.  I hope all is well!

  • Options for patching ESX 3.5 other than the Update Manager?

I know that you have options like VMTS Patch Manager for the old version of ESX.  Are there any other options that are free to patch my ESX servers?  My clients are not running Virtual Center Update Manager is out of the qustion.  Thank you in advance.

If you are in the search for free, you can still use the command line. The problem is that it is a bit complicated. Here is an article that I based my installation on: http://malaysiavm.com/blog/how-to-update-vmware-esx-patch-using-cli/

  • How many ways to update host ESX/ESXi

To my understanding there are 3 ways of updating ESX/ESXi host.

    • VMware Update Manager
    • VMware host utility update
    • vihostupdate

VUM - update host, vm, vApps and models (this one I'm sure)

VMware host update utility - only update the host?

vihostupdate - can do the same thing as VUM and the only difference is that it is a command line interface?

Is there a VMware document that I can read on this.  I ask this because I am preparing for the VCP 4 exam.  At the place I work, we use vSphere 5 and we don't have never upgrade from 3.x to vSphere 4.

Thanks for the pointers and have a nice day.

    Anthony.

Even if the differences are rated you always want to go with the mist release current which the VCP exam covers - so the 4.1 update guide -.

    I tried:

-Reinstall UM with new db (sql server)(nothing new)

    -Reinstall ESX (nothing new)

but the update of ESXi 4.1u1, ESX 3.5 317866 works very well.

This is because you have not installed the patch ESX350-201012410-BG.

As stated in the previous post.

To install the update manually and allow more updates will take place, you must download patch ESX350-201012410-BG of the VMware Web site.

Unzip and SCP to your ESX host and run the command b ESX350-201012410-BG - nosig one esxupdate update

There may be a necessary prereq. I must first install ESX350-201012404.

Same steps as above and updated race esxupdate b ESX350-201012404-BG - nosig

The switch - nosig does not check if the hash of the file.

    You'll be fine after that.

  • How to upgrade ESX 1 update to update 2 with the Update Manager?

Hi, I'm just installing vmware update manager because I want to update my ESX4U1 ESX 4.U2

But vmware update manager told me that I must use base instead of upgrading basic patch.

However, patch who will I choose to update my ESX in update 2?

Is there a single package, or I need to select several fixes?

    Thank you.

Beginning of the 10.06.2010, you can install 2 update via Patch Update manager. Just done on all 30 of my ESX hosts. And you can select only the correction for the work.

Here's SS of my base line patch where you can see Update 2 available:

The best way is to connect ESX to VC and use the Update Manager.

  • ESX 3.5 u4 update anomalies?

I installed the host ESX 3.5 153857 as an update and the new facility. Updating older versions from 3,5 up to 1-3 seem to go well and watch as before. I recently installed a new copy of update 4 and noticed that the Service Console no longer appears as the old configurations and makes me fear that I missed a step somewhere.

On upgrades from older versions of update of the Service Console network looks like befor with the Tag Service Console Port Connection Type and designation of vswif0 for the IP address, but on a new install of update 4 that the Service Console looks exactly like a regular port group?  In the updates properties VSwitch0 - Service Console - IP settings show upwards, but not in the new facility.

I can always communicate with Virtual Console but all my efforts to recreate the Console port group does not resemble earlier versions.

Any suggestions? Update 4 change the way in which groups of special ports appear? Any help is deeply appreciated.

When installing make sure that its the right NETWORK card port to use for the SC shows (where your network cable is connected).

  • Update Firmware ESX

I'm updating the PERC6 / I have firmware on our 2950 running ESX 3.5, after installing the update 4, we see is more our status of card and the RAID in Virtual Center.  The first thing I look for is the firmware on the RAID card.  I have the. BIN file Dell (Red Hat), use WinSCP to transfer the file to the TMP directory and run the command. / RAID_FRMW_LX_R216024. BIN and get the permission denied.  I can move in Linux, so and so, but I'm not sure what to do here.  Can someone provide some guidance? Thank you.

    Jason

Have you checked to see if the execute bit is set on the file, after he transferred?  Try this:

    ls - lh . / RAID_FRMW_LX_R216024. BIN

If you see something like this at the beginning:-rw - rr , then the execute bit is not set and can be defined as follows:

    chmod ux. / RAID_FRMW_LX_R216024. BAC +.

Try to run the file again.  If this gives even refused permission, make sure you are root and try again.  If it STILL does not work, see if Dell has a CD image or bootable USB drive that will allow you to apply the firmware.

  • Build number esx wrong after upgrading to esx 2.5 update 4

I have 2 area of ESX host in update 2 (#110268 build number). I upgraded one of my box with the Update Manager by creating a basaline which included upgrading esx 4 only.

After that I took out of the modality of mintenance of the host ESx updeated I have always the same number as before construction. I tried to restart the server services VC but who has not updated the build number.

So I login in the form of the console and the command of v - vmware has given me the right version number (153875).

so, what gives? Anyone know why there is an inconsistency in the VIC and the console? What I have to restart my ESX host in the order the update version number indicated by VIC?

  • Installation of Dell OpenManage on ESX 3.5 update 3

    According to this article:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003459

There's a patch to install before installing Dell OpenManage.  The document refers to ESX 3.5, and 3.5 update 3.  So I wonder if I still need to apply this patch before installing Dell OpenManage.  We will install OpenManage 5.5 on a PowerEdge 2950 III Server v.

    Thank you

    -John

You don't need this patch if you use update 3. (You should not this patch if you use the update 1 or later). VMware in general roles until all of the fixes in the next update.

You can also view this document, calling the patch only for 3.5. http://support.Dell.com/support/eDOCS/software/eslvmwre/Systems_Mngmnt/ESX_OM/HTML/OM.htm (table 2-1)

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5U1 to 3.5U3 by using Update Manager

I'm almost finished upgrading all our servers ESX 3.02 to 3.5 update 1 more a few patches.

This was done by booting from the CD to update 1 3.5 to perform the upgrade.

I had a basleine created in the update manager that includes all fixes releaed in June 2008 or earlier. This base was also used on all of our ESX servers.

I now want to use the Update Manager to upgrade all servers to 3.5.0 update 3 and the latest patches.

If I have a base line that includes all the updates that are never out, can I just clean up the hosts on this base? The upgrade process will be "smart" enough to just install update 3 and latest patches or will be installed all the patches in sequence include the update 2 which I suppose is not necessary if the update 3 is also being installed?

Should I create a baseline containing the 3 updated and any update since then. Update 3 includes other updates also published November 6?

Note that I'm under 104215 virtual Center version but will be upgrading to update 3 before upgrading the hosts.

Our Update Manager database was created when the Update Manager is out and includes all updates, including ESX Server 3.5.0 Update 2 updated with the question of the "ticking time bomb".

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Craig

    Hello

I'm never live from 3.0.1 to U1 and U3. Always fresh, I installed 3.5 and then improved from there. However your approach should work perfectly as well. I wouldn't get to frustrated with VUM as him starts and stops and the issue of sanitation occur due to the circles of interesting dependence and bugs squarely in the process of upgrading some of the improvements. I often force ESX in Maintenance mode to install the updates. It depends usually if VMware HA is enabled, or VMS must be evacuated. I tend to evacuate all virtual machines running by hand, then perform upgrades.

Oh right sorry, forgot that, as he used to work with free ESXi earlier

During the upgrade, there is not a single were you can really do something wrong:

It will ask you to upgrade or new install.

The pre-selected and correct answer is "upgrade and preserve the VMFS datastore ', so that your virtual machines them will not be deleted.
