Upgrading ESX 3.5U1 to 3.5U3 by using Update Manager

I'm almost finished upgrading all our servers ESX 3.02 to 3.5 update 1 more a few patches.

This was done by booting from the CD to update 1 3.5 to perform the upgrade.

I had a basleine created in the update manager that includes all fixes releaed in June 2008 or earlier. This base was also used on all of our ESX servers.

I now want to use the Update Manager to upgrade all servers to 3.5.0 update 3 and the latest patches.

If I have a base line that includes all the updates that are never out, can I just clean up the hosts on this base? The upgrade process will be "smart" enough to just install update 3 and latest patches or will be installed all the patches in sequence include the update 2 which I suppose is not necessary if the update 3 is also being installed?

Should I create a baseline containing the 3 updated and any update since then. Update 3 includes other updates also published November 6?

Note that I'm under 104215 virtual Center version but will be upgrading to update 3 before upgrading the hosts.

Our Update Manager database was created when the Update Manager is out and includes all updates, including ESX Server 3.5.0 Update 2 updated with the question of the "ticking time bomb".

Any advice will be appreciated.

Hello

I'm never live from 3.0.1 to U1 and U3. Always fresh, I installed 3.5 and then improved from there. However your approach should work perfectly as well. I wouldn't get to frustrated with VUM as him starts and stops and the issue of sanitation occur due to the circles of interesting dependence and bugs squarely in the process of upgrading some of the improvements. I often force ESX in Maintenance mode to install the updates. It depends usually if VMware HA is enabled, or VMS must be evacuated. I tend to evacuate all virtual machines running by hand, then perform upgrades.

  • Version upgrade ESX using Update Manager

    Hello

To upgrade my ESX 3.5.0 Update 2 for Update4 I did the following:

(1.) using Update Manager, I have predefined joint und Crtitcal NO Crtitcal updates and I have created a new ESX Server Updates (dynamic) base apart.

2.) I did clean up Crtitcal updated and overnight NO Crtitcal updates

I didn't fix the new line of manual base ESX Server Updates (dynamic)

Now, all updates are consistent and the build number is 153875

    Should I now update 4?

My question is, do I really need to attach a new ESX Server Updates (dynamic) not predefined reference to the ESX version upgrade?

BTW. ESX HOWTO find new updates?

    Yes, you now have U4.

You do not have to create the new base, critical and Non-critical are enough.

  • I have a question about the ESXi upgrade using Update Manager...

This is probably a stupid question, but I've never played and update ESXi using Update Manager.  We need to update ESXi ESXi 4.1 4.1 servers before vCenter 5.0 U1 from U2 (there is a known issue where the ESXi 4.1 servers receive the GROUP after upgrading vCenter to 5.0 U1).  We used HP ESXi image to install ESXi on our servers for new installations.  This image contains ESXi.1 U2 as well as the drivers of HP and CIM.

    4.1_U2_Oct_2011_ESXi_HD - USB-SDImgeInstlr_Z7550 - 00241.iso

Can this same image HP ESXi 4.1 U2 that we used to install to new ESXi servers, be used to upgrade our 4.1 4.1 U2 ESXi servers using the Update Manager?  Or, upgrade package should be used for the upgrade?  Also, if an upgrade package must be used, is it OK to use one provided by VMware, or will be losing our HP specific drivers and CIM to do this?

    Thank you

    Hello

You can import custom HP ESXi 4.1 U2 ISO in Update Manager (don't forget to use the latest version of June 2012, available here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM06) and update the hosts with her.

In a second step, you can then import the last custom HP ESXi ISO 5.0 (available here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM09) and update the hosts again with her.

To be on the current ESXi 5.0 patch level you finally apply the latest patches from VMware via the Update Manager.

  • Update Manager upgrade of the ESXi host that he is running in a virtual machine does

That is the question.  Here is some information.  We were a completely virtualized environment for several years.  2 guests ESXi collocated 5.5 to different data centers connected of course by a VPN site-to site.  The VPN itself is provided by VMs and vCenter runs in a VM to one of the sites as Update Manager is to proceed with installing it. If the vCenter and/or VPN VMs are down, we have a very cool backup method to gain access to and manage ESXi and its console.   Some of you who read the rest of the present will be tempted to suggest to architecting our environment differently, but we are very pleased with the way it is thank you very much :-)  Appreciate all the answers but really just responded to this specific question.

The reason why we want to Update Manager is really just to be able to upgrade easily ESXi in the future without enter in the console and the execution of orders, etc.  I realize the documentation and blogs on this topic that ESXi may need to go into maintenance mode and stop the virtual machines running on it (not a cluster if no migration) how ESXi is lose connection to the Update Manager (if the remote host) or a stop Update Manager (if the local host).  So the question is, is that the process of updating managed by Update Manager an atomic operation at that crucial moment or a sequence of operations depend on continuous connectivity and control of Update Manager.  Ddoes ESXi, then perform the upgrade and restart regardless - that would be great - or he'll just stand there in maintenance mode to learn more about disconnected now / stop Manager update pending.

    Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Please, tell me if I understand you:

Ask yourself if you can upgrade the host running Update Manager VM? And you cannot migrate the virtual to another host machine because there is no cluster in place and no shared storage?

If your answer is YES to both questions, I can tell you that you cannot use Update Manager, since you must put your host in Maintenance Mode and therefore you will need to stop all virtual machines running, including the VM Manager Update.

  • With the help of Manager Update to upgrade ESX 5.1 to 5.5 - conflicting ERROR VIBS

    Hello

I hope someone can help. I have a number of 5.1 ESX host that I would spend 5.5 using the Update Manager which seems straight forward enough... right

    vCentre is 5.5

Import the ESXi ISO to update manager

    Create a baseline

Attach the base to the host to be upgraded

    Analyze and correct the

    .... Simple

The problem I have is that use us the HP Custom image because they are all servers in HP, sense, right. I downloaded the HP 5.5 Custom ISO Image from the VMWare site and imported from the ISO to the Update Manager, created a base line, attached to a host of test (DL585 G5) and scan. IM presented then an incompatible warning and details show below

    Conflicting VIBS error.JPG

I searched the net for a solution and found several contradictory entries on dealing with VIBs and creating custom ISOs, I also downloaded the ZIP of the Depot HP ESX file and created a custom ISO that does not work either.

Here are the current Broadcom VIBs installed on my ESX host, test

    Broadcom drivers Installed.JPG

I can not also remove the contradictory VIBs because they are network card drivers and if I delete and restart the host does not have network cards (well Yes, I tried).

Its been 2 days of pulling my hair and maybe I'm missing something simple.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thank you

    DCurrie,

I'm in the same boat as you. I all hosts in HP DL380s I have migrated my hosts to test on my server to vCenter 5.5 U1 and went to perform the upgrade on the hosts of 5.1. I had everything first to apply the latest patches on the 5.1, which then allowed me to level 5.5.0 of the host. I then had another set of patches that I applied (assuming that I had to do before moving to 5.5.1). After the implementation of those, I still 5.5.1 an incompatible upgrade.

The upgrade contains the following set of contradictory VIBs:

    Broadcom_bootbank_net - bnx2_2.2.5dv55.2 - 1OEM.550.0.0.1331820

Remove the conflicting VIBs, or use the Image Generator...

Then, I could at least make at 5.5.0, but not more than details. Both used 5.5.0 and 5.5.1 ISOs are ISOs of OEM HP.

    I have currently installed bnx2_2.2.4f.v55.3.

HP has like downloadable bnx2_2.2.3t.v55.7 under the heading vSphere 5.5.

VMware under the HCL has several versions, including my current version and the bnx2_2.2.5d.v55.2.

Since this is test, I'll play with it some more and see what I can understand.

Update: from U1b 5.5 Release Notes

Update Manager reports the status of compliance as Incompatible when scanning or clean up ESXi 5.x hosts in a HA cluster

When you perform an upgrade ESXi 5.x hosts belonging to a HA cluster analysis, Update Manager can report on the status of compliance of the incompatible host and might not allow the hosts to be remediated. Inconsistent compliance status is because of the way the agent of FDM (HA) is installed on ESXi 5.x hosts. From vSphere 5.0, the FDM agent is installed on the hosts ESXi as a VIB. When a VIB is installed or updated on an ESXi host, a flag is set to indicate that the bootbank on the host has been updated. Update Manager checks this flag while performing an analysis to level or sanitation and requires this flag to be cleared before the upgrade of a host. The flag can be cleared by restarting the host.

Solution: restart guests reporting the State of compliance as Incompatible. Run the analysis of upgrading or rehabilitation after the host comes back online.

Will try this and let you know how it goes.

  • Upgrading ESX when you are connected to the SAN

Hello. At the time, it was considered preferable to unplug the host SAN during installation or upgrading ESX fram. Is this still the case with ESXi 5.5?

    Hello

In fact, it is always best practice to disconnect from the SAN, but you could do it on the fly as well using the Manager to update if your upgrade to ESXi ESXI 5.1 to 5.5. I have seen many do

without any problem. Just make sure that the hardware is compatible in HCL.

I intend to upgrade to host ESX 3.5 update 4 ESX 4.0 update1.   I use ESX 4.0 update 1 DVD ISO Picture, when I try to create a baseline for the upgrade of the host, I get the following error.  It is said "impossible to import upgrade, upgrade version is not supported by this version fo Vmware VCenter update manager. I know that I can directly connect to ESX 3.5 and run the esxupdate or boot ESX 4.0 update DVD and perform the upgrade. I wonder why cann't Update Manager? We know the right answer?

    Just a guess.

As you try to download the update of ESX 1, I guess that your vCenter Server is already on the update 1.

If so you can update manager to update to version 4.0 Update 1 Patch 2.

  • vCenter is virtual server - how to upgrade ESX host?

Our vCenter server is a virtual server.  I've been thinking how to run update manager on the host ESX, vCenter is sitting on.   The only thing I can think of is to use the VMware Converter stand alone app and move the vCenter server to another ESX host and then start vCenter / Manager Update on the new ESX host to update the original ESX host.

    Is there an easier way?

you have a shared storage?  If so, go to the host computer running the vCenter VM on, turned off, make a note of the data store that it is, remove the inventory, go to another host, browse the data store, find the vmx file, right-click "add to the inventory.

.. .or you can use VMware Converter to move the VM vCenter.  Another way would be to turn off the VM vCenter and do the upgrade using the CLI interface.

Hi, I'm just installing vmware update manager because I want to update my ESX4U1 ESX 4.U2

We have ESX 3.5.0 Update 2 installed.

How upgrade to ESX 3.5 Update 3?

You use ESX, so I guess you have full VI with vCenter.

Update vCenter 2.5u4 initially, only in this version update plugin manager holds sessions. Then configure Update manager vCenter.

I have improved my VI to u3, ESX and ESXi. Everything is ok, no problem at all.
