ESX 4.0 shows less available space on a RAID Volume as full size

Server configuration:

VMWare ESX 4.0.0 Update 1

Mother SATA superMicro SuperServer 6025 B

Intel E5405 2.0 GHz CPU quad-core 64-bit

8 GB OF DDR2 ECC RAM

GCCA 9690 3Ware storage controller - SA with the latest firmware (which

supports VMWare 4.0.0 Update 1) and installed the ESX drivers.

Disks 0 and 1 are 1 TB disks.  2-5 drives are 2 TB disks.  2 TB disks

have already been used with Windows and has the GUID partition table, but now

I want to use with VMWare.  It causes me problems I think.

I created a volume of RAID1 1 TB of drives 0 and 1 and installed

VMWare on this, and my first data store is on the remaining space on this

volume.  I then created a RAID10 volume out of the 4 drives for 4 TB

total space.  It's initialization through initialization in the background is

immediately available via the controller.

I tried to create a store of data on this volume. I had various

complaints from the GUI, including "unable to get the partition information.

and "object is not set to an instance of an object" I tried to click

my way through.

I did a little research and saw an article on how to create partitions

manually.  But fdisk was complaining about the GUID partition tables, and

even after I created the partition and restarted I wasn't able to find a

device in VMFS to create the file system on.

So I thought I would blow the entire partition table, so I used "dd".

to kill the copies of the partition GUID in beginning and end table

of the disc.

Now ESX not be complaint, but it is said that the capacity of the disk is

3.64 TB and TB 1.64 is space.  However there is no

table partition at this point and "fdisk-u/dev/sdb" shows the full

capacity of the volume.

What I am doing wrong?

ESX (i) can't stand no bigger than "2 TB - 512 Bytes" lun.

What you need to do, is to divide your RAID and attend smaller LUNS ESX host.

  • Insufficient available space

Implementation of a new data store ESXi 4.0 Server from vSphere client shows my RAID device as having a capacity of 2.27 TB with a 280,28 GB available capacity and reports that the drive is empty.  Why?  How to use the full capacity of the drive?

    Configuration features:

    VMware ESXi, 4.0.0 181294 licensed

It is a dual xeon quad core with 8 GB of RAM with an Intel S5000 motherboard.

The primary boot device is a 4Gb USB DRIVE attached to the motherboard header.

The secondary storage device is an AMCC9650 with 6 500 GB SATA drives in a RAID5 configuration.

RAID storage is freshly formatted as a single drive.

    "The drive is empty."

«There is only one configuration of available layouy.»  Use the next button to continue with the other pages of the wizard.

"A partition will be created and used.

If I create a drive with a maximum capacity of 280 GB and back to add another partition, the device is no longer listed (no available space?).

Assuming you want all of the storage on a single data store, re-create your LUNS with the controller of the group as (for example) 2 x 1,2 TB lun.  Create a data store on the first, then add the second as a measure.  Either incidentally, the RAID controller will have a backup battery for under ESX acceptable write performance.

Please give points for any helpful answer.

  • When you try to create the simple volume, I get "There is not enough available space on the disks to complete this operation." Even when there is obviously a lot of space.

I just installed Windows 7 Professional in the last hour and was not able to create this partition during the installation.  Now that I'm in disk management.  It's showing I 73,24 GB of free space.  What I'm trying to do in the end, is to combine this with a partition already created.  One thing I find strange is anytime I go into "new simple volume" it tells me that the maximum space in MB is 74997 when the free space on the graph shows me only 73,24 GB.  I tried to create the size of the volume to 73000 MB and have also tried 10000MB and get to every time the same mistake!  "There is not enough available space on the disks to complete this operation."  What can I do to fix this?

Your best bet is a third party partition manager.

With the tools of Windows 7, you can only shrink and extend partitions, apart from the creation and deletion of them.

Disk manufacturers quote their sizes of disc in decimal format. Windows Go are 2 ^ 10 or 1024 decimal MB. Then 74997/1024 is 73,24 GB.

  • LUN showing sufficient free space but VMware showing low on space!

    Hello

I have a very strange problem on a loan SAN, I don't have on hand the model number for the moment, but it's a PS6000 with NL - SAS drives.

When I look in VMware to the DRLUN01 it seems that there is only 149 GB of free. When I look at the same SAN logical unit number, he says he has 985 GB free!

The SAN is running the latest firmware and is connected to a server ESXi 4.1.0 through iSCSI. The LUN contains replicas of Veeam my production systems. When I talked to Veeam they notify that they have seen this twice but only know that Dell has solved the problems.

As I'm not offered no support, even if I'm likely to spend August 20 k with Dell and have the Support Pro on my production SAN, I was wondering if someone can get ideas?

    Thank you

If you have allocated (from the point of view ESX) all your space so it is a different matter.  ESX needs free space to work properly.  Temp files, the swapfiles, newspapers and snapshots of VMware.   For example, I usually create volumes of 600GO (in general), I leave at least 100 GB free.  If that gets close, I create a new data store and move the virtual machines or simply create the new on the new data store.

Re: ESX knows.   Basics of basic/SCSI disk.  At the level of the storage disk, there is no "files" there are only blocks.   Each block has an address, called a LBA, logical block addressing.  Each volume (disk) reports so that its ability to the controller.

The volume (disk) starts at LBA 0 and goes to the LBA The ESX server keeps a table of total blocks and when you make an entry, it selects and for use LBA.   LBA (and data) are written in the volume (disk).

The table knows also how each volume is great, so he knows how many blocks there.   ESX server sends that data with the LBA ESX choose to use, at the same time, it will update the allocation table which is on this VMFS volume...  The table can then locate LBA (X) and write the data here.

So, since you gave us (X) MB, we can infer that from the free space of the total volume.   Works fine as long as you never delete anything.   A removal of ESX is a WRITING on the VMFS allocation table.  We record this writing as others.   There is nothing to say the array, AMLA (X) is no longer used, so return to the Member's area.   This is where the new command comes in cancel the MAPPING.  Now the server can send a command that tells unallocate (free) LBA (X).   Use space will go down and free space on this member will go up.

Re: Re-use of Array.   So since it's the ESX Server that determines the LBA to use, it will be re - write down as needed.

Re: Free to the declaration space.  # Important indicator is what the operating system said, not the table.  Finally when SCSI UNMAP is indeed those two will be much closer together.   If a VMFS volume goes to 100%, you're in trouble.   ESX will no longer be a LBA list to choose from.  Entries will fail and VMs will go down.

The table in use is assistance to make sure that you attach no more space than you did.

That is if you had a table of 2 TB, you can create a volume thin MUCH bigger than available.  But up to what you actually write more than 2 TB, of a data value, you're fine.  If you do, then the table runs out of space and volumes to disconnect and all virtual machines would stop.  This gauge to judge when to buy more storage.

If w/o UNMAP, finally the EQL GUI does NOT reflect the free space for a volume.

Bottom line, follow what ESX (or any server) said being used and free space on a volume.

    Best?

    Hello

    Go to crucial.com... http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx

and click on the scan of the system. This will tell you what memory is installed, how many, what size...

If it shows just 1 GB, remove the cover to get in memory to check that there is only one. If there is, Windows correctly reports memory.

If it has 2 1 GB modules, remove the memory, reinstall the two modules and run the test again. If Windows displays always 1 GB, modules went west.

Try each module in turn, and then place the module broken on the side.

If your machine is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer and do know a module of memory has failed. If the warranty is over, replace the module memory...

  • The D drive is almost full, 255 MB of available space on 20.3 GB (newly purchased)

    Hello

I just bought a computer laptop 4 GB on August 12, 2012. I didn't save much even in my "D drive" However, it shows, that it is almost full. Its total capacity is 20.3 GB and the total available space is now only 255 MB. I really wonder why. I wish to request responses from you guys.

    Thank you in advance.

PS Please see below the screenshot of the State of the D drive.

    Sincerely,

    Rain

    Hi rain,

You certainly shouldn't have to store all the files in this score - it's supposed to be just large enough to contain the files required to reinstall the operating system without generating a "Low disk space" error  Storing something else here can cause the recovery to fail process, they must be removed as described in the link in my previous post.

If you want to back up your personal files, a good option is to buy an external hard drive and store them here.

    Kind regards

  • vFRC shows no free space after restart of the vcenter

I have a new cluster I implement vFRC on. The cluster runs great and the vFRC which seems to work without problems. Unfortunately to restart my VCenter the hosts in the cluster always show all they have vFRC installed, but show 0 MB of available space. The only way to clear it is to place the host in maintenance mode.

It is of course difficult since it happens to all hosts on the cluster at the same time. Forces me to each stop all the VM on a host or disable vFRC on the virtual machine to a host to get into maintenance mode.

Anyone know if this is expected behavior?

or if there is problem kb/known, and I'm not finding?

or a good direction to go to diagnose why this is happening?

    I am running

vFRC on intel P3600 (NVMe interface)

How your vCenter is allowed? EntPlus?

What type of shared storage do you have? What is a San with an option of Flash?

I've been looking for KB and found this one. Have you seen this one yet? http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2136867

Otherwise, I found the list of best practices in the guide of vFRC 5.5, which remain valid for the v6, and I would check that these are achieved before continue.

Try resetting your device. This will not erase your data stored on that device.

    • Press and hold the sleep/wake button
    • Press and hold the Home button
    • Press and hold both buttons until the display turns off and on again with the Apple logo on the subject.

Hi, my c drive shows low disk space, so I searched for the program that holds more memory on the c drive. I came to know that pagefile.sys has 3 GB in the c drive, kindly guide me to move the pagefile.sys to another drive.

    Hi jafrin.michel,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft community.

Before you start the troubleshooting steps, I need the information required.

What version of the windows operating system do you use?

    Method 1:

If you are using windows 7, I suggest to perform a disk cleanup and verify.

    Delete files using disk cleanup

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    Method 2:

If you want to move the pagefile.sys to another drive, follow the steps and check out them.

Follow these steps to move the pagefile.sys to C: drive on D: drive (if you have the drive D :).

1, write click on my computer and select Properties.

2, click on the Advanced tab.

3, click settings under performance menu.

4, click on the Advanced tab and click on change.

5, select letter (C :) and "BOLD" No pagefile then click on Set. )

6, if you want to configure pagefile.sys in, select drive D: drive letter D: and "BOLD" in the custom size or the size of the system managed , then click on Set. It displays a pop-up message click OK.

7, again click apply and OK OK.

8, the system you will be asked to reboot, click on Yes.

9, after rebooting the system, you can see the pagefile.sys will be moved to D:
