ESX 4 in Workstation 7.0 on Linux - networking issues

Hi all

I hope someone can help me to debug / identifying a problem that I'm etting ESX 4 working in VMWare Workstation 7.0 on Linux (on Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, both have the same problem for me).

ESX 4.0 installs well inside a virtual machine, with the guest operating system 'Server ESX 4.0' value, but after startup, IP & DHCP packets do not work for the ESX 4 comments system.  tcpdump inside the prompt shows arp traffic and broadcast traffic for the entire LAN segment.  ESXi 4 works successfully, with DHCP/ICMP/vSwitch communications all works well.  I tested on

The system configuration:

  • Host machine: Intel i7 920, 6 GB memory, Ubuntu 9.04.  IP: 192.168.1.54

  • Comments: ESX4.0 build 164009. IP: 192.168.1.243

I'm sitting on this during a while hoping for an update of the kernel or ESX more late build could

fix my problem, but I had no luck.  Last night, I tried ESX4.0 on

Workstation 7 on Windows 7 and has worked successfully for comments <>- lan

communications.  Frustrating, ESXi done work on this platform/configuration, but I want to evaluate some software that only works on ESX4.0.

I havn't been able find someone else with my symptoms, so

I hope one of you skilled experts can help me debug this or provide a

suggestion on what he could be wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I am on Windows 7 and I have a Ubuntu 10.10 I can't accept an IP address. I don't know if my question is Ubuntu configurations or VMware. I have a NETWORK adapter that is set to Custom (VMnet7) which I configured with DHCP. My goal was to implement a custom network (VMnet7) so that they can communicate without an external connection. I added Windows clients and receive DHCP addresses without problem. When I add my Ubuntu box, he does not get the IP address. I have the set eth0

    Auto eth0

    iface eth0 inet dhcp

When I restart the network interface, he seeks an IP address by sending a DHCP request to 255.255.255.255, but never received an answer from, and finally abandoned. This machine has been downloaded from another system and pulled upwards. Any suggestions on the place where to proceed to diagnose the problem?

Well, since no body here has given me no help, I had to fix myself, I followed this tutorial, I found via google and it worked fine, I don't know if I'm allowed to post links or not, but carried away, I'm really sorry!

  • Best Linux for host? ... and ESX vs. Workstation

I've been running VM Workstation since 1999.  I just built a physical machine for my lab at home I want to only run on VMS.  I have two questions.

What is the best linux for VM Workstation 8 host?

I went the compatitibility guide at:

    http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide2/search.php?deviceCategory=software & testConfig = 17

    and put:

    Workstation

    8.0

    all the

    all the

    Linux

    Desktop

    64

and it happens with Mandriva and SUSE.  It's weird.  No Red Hat?  No Ubuntu?  No Debian?  Mandriva is a French company funded by the Russians, which hurts me a little inside, and SUSE is not free.  It makes me wonder if this page is current.

Which leads to my next question. ... Are there not some hypervisor product that does not even need a host operating system?  What ESX?  I can get all the features of Workstation (snapshots, etc.) with this hypervisor product? ... and of course, I can't spend $2,000 for a lab at home.   It seems to me that to remember that one of these products is free,... was it ESXi?  Can someone explain the differences between the workstation and ESX in a few sentences.  But if I need the version ESX is $2000, then too bad.

I suppose that, ideally, I would like to install Workstation as a hypervisor (no host operating system).  Is there anyway to achieve this?  What do you suggest me?

ESXi uses a very minimal video driver - a computer display virtual itself is not possible
This is why you must use a second physical machine to view virtual machines

inside the virtual machines, you get only a virtual video card - playing the latest games inside a virtual machine is not possible

    > or that, it cannot run on an i7? ... once again, really?

This is not correct - do not know who told you that...
ESXi is very picky when it comes to disk controllers - fake Raids and cheap stuff is not supported - but it will work with normal SATA drives

-How you configure the network settings of the virtual machine?

-The VM does not map network?

-You use DHCP or IP settings set in the virtual machine?

I recommend the following to the test:

-Configure the virtual computer to use DHCP (in the virtual machine itself)

-Configure the virtual machine for the custom virtual network adapter settings: VMnet1 (host only)

After the virtual machine restarts, it should have a DHCP IP address and be able to communicate (ping) to 192.168.56.1

  • Click-Mini satellite L9W - B - Linux installation issues

    Hello

I try to install linux on a toshiba mini-click L9W - B. Since I was able to boot with the USB (UEFI only) I've got trouble finding drivers to be able to use the card Wifi and the keyboard Dock.

Ony 8.2 debian is able to start with a touchscreen to work but without network...

Is anyone have positive results in the deployment of linux on toshiba mini-click L9W - B? Any working linux distribution?

    Thank you
    Best regards, Freddy.

Given that I have no answer, I will publish my own test results here:

From my own tests with toshiba mini click, you'll be able start vfat usb key with a well formatted starting efi directory and file (/ efi in your USB). BIOS even in version 5.10 can't start legacy.

8.1 32-bit Windows usb Windows 8.1 build key is able to start on click mini (ntfs file system) and 64-bit Windows usb key build of Windows 8.1 8.1 64-bit does not start on click mini. I suspect, that chat on the forum of the EU of toshiba, toshiba mini click bios to start using 32-bit efi startup plans on efi/boot/bootia32.efi.

Here's a way to start any distro of linux of your mini click using a usb key with the vfat file system:
1 - try to boot with a USB stick to gparted (vfat file system)
    2. get the boot efi files / (including a grub.cfg file)
    3. use the directory/boot/efi on the new USB that you create, you have managed to boot linux change efi/boot/grub.cfg.

Try Manjaro (ArchLinux) distribution, this distribution has the best material of support right here. 15.04 - Ubuntu or Debian - 8.2 may work in some time, always missing drivers in the installation process.

They may lose access to the server SQL, network and share printers. Disconnection and connection to eliminate all problems for a while. Their network cards are configured to not be turned off to save energy. I moved their connections to different network switches, used different cables and taken different same patch and wall panel. I don't know if it is a client/server firewall problem, a network problem or a problem of user account or workstation. • eth0.bak Linux Network Interface

Sometimes when you create a virtual machine from a linux model, a second network interface is created called eth0.bak, in addition to eth0.  Other times, when you create a virtual machine of the same model, eth0.bak is not created (as displayed in the GUI network configuration in RHEL).

Does anyone know what are the eth0.bak causes to create?  This essential to its functioning - NIC eth0.bak or should I remove it?  It is often filled with network settings to a different subnet than eth0 is on (eth0 is the correct subnet and is completed by a model of personalization)

Any input on the meaning of best practices and experience with this appreciated.

    Thank you

Some Linux distributions create eth0.bak or eth1 when initially assigned to eth0 mac address has changed.

This can be avoided if you clean the related configuration address in the template before deployment.

of course, it would be easier simply not to change the MAC, but then you can run either so we this VM in a certain segment of network
