ESXi 5.5 Remote Shutdown - HA Complications

Hello

I am currently working on a remote desktop that has ESXi environment locally with centralized vCenter.  Here's the basic idea and my question.

Environment:

  • Remote Desktop
    • 5.1 & 5.5 ESXi servers
      • SAN storage
    • WAN connectivity
    • UPS
      • APC, Eaton, MGE
  • DC plant
    • vCenter

Location:

  • Power loss of remote offices
    • Usually your WAN connection will be lost at the same time

Process:

  1. UPS monitor
    1. Controlled via a RaspberryPI (need something outside the VM environment)
  2. Monitor detects the power issue
    1. Stop all virtual machines residing on ESXi hosts
    2. Put the ESXi in maintenance mode
    3. Be able to stop the ESXi hosts
    4. Judgment of the SAN

Question:

  • Since these ESXi hosts run HA, what is happening (with the process protection AP) what VMs are shutdown or ESXi is stopped?  (remember, there is no communication with vCenter at this point because you lost your WAN)
    • Scenario 1:
      • VMS in protected mode are stop on ESXi02
        • SE HA on the ESXi01 think this is a mistake and try to recover the virtual machine on ESXi01?
    • Scenario 2:
      • ESXi02 stopped all it of VM and now power off
        • ESXi01 think ESXi02 is isolated and now try to recover these VM on ESXi01?

Joint corresponds to the real script will reside on the ESXi server to perform the closing (slightly modified from the original, thanks to FBartels [esxidown/esxidown.sh to sixdimensionalarray/esxidown master ·]) ([GitHub]).

Thank you

B

I'll assume that your remote site is it's own cluster? If this is not the case, there are a number of additional complications that would take a lot of time to enter.

Also, remember that the HA process is independent of vCenter. It requires not vCenter to use, just for the installation/configuration changes.

  • Scenario 1:

    • VMS in protected mode are stop on ESXi02

      • SE HA on the ESXi01 think this is a mistake and try to recover the virtual machine on ESXi01? -No, if stop you a VM HA not going not pronounce
  • Scenario 2:
    • ESXi02 stopped all it of VM and now power off

      • ESXi01 think ESXi02 is isolated and now try to recover these VM on ESXi01? -No, no

Does that answer your questions?

  • Remote Shutdown ESXi servers

    Good day everyone!

I use ESXi 5.5.0 on Dell and HP servers. I can remote shut down all virtual machines inside servers, but I don't know how to stop remote servers.

    We will explain:

When the power source is lost. I have only one auto power off server that plugs directly into the inverter. Before its closure, a command script will be executed at the stop other servers on the network (including virtual machines). But the ESXi server that still store virtual machines running. I do not know how to stop remotely (by command, or 3rd software...). I'm worried about my data may be lost if the ESXi servers are not safe stop.

    Another question:

If I can stop the ESXi server remotely. Do I have to stop a virtual machines before you stop the real server? Or I can use 'virtual machine startup/shutdown' options to auto shut off all the virtual machine inside the ESXi Server?

I use the paid license 5.5.0 of ESXi and vCenter 5.5.0.

    Thanks in advance!

If the virtual machines are not safely stop and then start/stop option can be disabled in the host.

launch the vsphere client session to the ESXi server and verify that the settings are activated.

Regarding ssh, it is nothing more than a protocol like RDP connection for unix machines

We have a tool called Putty to establish an ssh session to the ESXi server. Follow the steps in the article, select ssh shell alone is not necessary. Use the method to do, vsphere client it will be easier

  • How can I trace the IP address of the machine source "remote shutdown"?

    Hello

I have Activate Shutdown event log in my XP machine, however again, I'm not able to trace the IP on 15 XP workgroup computer that stop away from my machine.

Or at least tell me what protocol or port shutdown.exe uses when it sends the command remotely.

I captured ProcMon, Journal NetMon and wire-shark, yet, I have no idea to start my investigation.

    Help, please.

Nothing of what you said is causing me to believe that a remote machine is responsible for - or - nothing to either exclude it.

  • ESXi free version - remote access

    Hello

I wonder if it is possible to remotely control the free version of ESXi. Everything what I need to be able to do is clone, start and stop virtual machines, and I'm happy to use telnet or other command line tools. Is it posible to use vmrun as with VMWare Server? Or a similar tool? Or is the free version has deliberately hampered in that regard.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Phil

    Or activate the ssh.

    (1) on the console of the ESXi host, press ALT - F1 to access the console window.

    (2) enter unsupported in the console and press ENTER. You won't see the text you type.

    (3) If you typed in not supported properly, you will see the Tech Support Mode warning and request a password. Enter the password for the root connection.

    (4) you should see the prompt of ~ #. Edit the inetd.conf file (enter the vi /etc/inetd.confcommand).

    (5) find the line that starts with #ssh and remove the #. Then save the file. If you start using vi, then move the cursor to the line of #ssh and then press the Insert key. Move the cursor on a space, and then press BACKSPACE to remove the #. Press ESC , and then type in : wq to save the file and exit vi. If you make a mistake, you can press the ESC key and then type that information: q! exit vi without saving the file.

    (6) once you have closed the vi editor, run the command /sbin/services.sh restart to restart management services. You will now be able to connect to the ESXi host with a SSH client.

  • esxi, vcli windows Shutdown host

Hi all, I'll put up my esxi stopped when the APC is running out of battery. The way I work on is to map the USB port to a computer virtual windows (on the same host esxi) and run the shutdown command host of the built-in windows xp option power management once batter reaches 10%.

I know there is another solution for d othis, but believe me I have a limited choice for various reasons.

Now... I tried to run the command vicfg - hostops.pl with different summer, but no luck.

At best, I managed to have the cmd with acceptance of the order: no error in not out but no confirmation either

I guess I'm something simple just missing here...

    A tip? Thank you

    The following error:

    Error string: error. RestrictedVersion.summary
    Lack of details: RestrictedVersionFault

you are using the version free ESXi, which is fine, but you cannot use the LCIs to automate tasks unless you have a paid license. It is a restriction of the CLI/API, you must have a paid license to access these two write operations. When you use the free version, you can only 'query' or reading the API, but you cannot perform write operations.

  • While making a stop to a vista computer remotely, an error "the path not found network" takes place.

I'm stopping distance this computer running Windows Vista Homp Premium from a Windows XP Professional computer. I ran shutdown.exe, but it says "the network path is not found." The network is working properly and I can't do a ping to this computer. I made sure that I ran the closure of an administrator account that has the same cridentials as an administrator on vista computer account (when I changed it, I got "access denied"). Quite simply, I know I have the privileges necessary to perform a remote shutdown.

I know not how to remote shutdown of a pc on our network using the command-line using this...

    Shutdown - r f t 0 - m ComputerName

But how to do it with my mac to pc?

Again, you can not. The commands only work with the same OS.

Yes Mac to Mac, Windows, Windows, etc.

You will need to find some kind of package of administration remote cross-platform.

  • Can I use a NAS as a remote data store

I currently have 5 cisco ucs esxi hosts to my main place. I'm looking to get rid of the old servers to each smaller branch location. I was wondering if I could put a NAS at each branch and use the NAS to connect its main location esxi hosts remotely and use it as a data store.

-Main branch therefore has all esxi hosts

-Remote sites (10 of them, a few miles) place a NAS that will be the data to the site store.

-L' idea is to keep the user data at each remote site and didn't browse the EXTENDED network

If so, of the recommendations on a NAS?

Welcome to the community - is that you're looking to virtualize servers of your remote sites - if you were to store virtual machines in remote offices you will be magnifying the amount of data flowing through the WAN connections - I store the VMs remote offices in the same location as the ESXi server that will host virtual machines

  • Please help me to wake up April ESXi

    Hello

I'm a newbie here and just started to learn things. Could someone help me understand how install us Esxi on a remote server. For example, I have a new server located in another country and I'm an admin asked to install ESXi on this server. Are there any tools to do this job.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the Forums!

Most hardware vendors offer the possibility to connect to the remote console.  HP ILO, IBM has IMM and Dell DRAC.  Everything also allow you to attach media.  This would probably be the best way to do the installation.

  • ESXi VCLI versus troubleshooting Mode.

    Hello!

Silly question - is there a difference between the commands and features between these two tools? If so, what are they?

I am aware that is used for the scripts and development and another for troubleshooting, but the orders themselves any different or are they universal?

    Thank you!

    Hello.

The commands are different.  You can view the technical support orders in Appendix of the Guide de Configuration ESXi.  The remote commands can be found here.

    Good luck!

  • Eject physical CD remotely

Is it possible to eject a physical CD to a server ESXi 4.0 remotely?  It's a HP Server and I don't see a way to do that through the ILO, so I was hoping there was a way to do this in ESXi 4, like maybe the console not taken in charge or something.  Of course, him "eject" very practical which is binary does not exist on the VMkernel console not supported as it does on classic for a reason and ESX service console that Setup ESXi 4 is not eject media when the installation is complete as ESX classic always makes.  In addition, the start menu on the default CD to ESXi Installer instead of boot disk for some reason-has not really made for the company, I guess that...

Anyway, I know about workarounds as change my BIOS boot order, etc, but I'd like something better than this.  Supports virtual HP is just way too slow, so I prefer to use physical media when I can, but I have no plan on the title of our datacenter for a good week or two and this will continue to go up again and again as we work on our deployment ESXi 4.

Have you tried to add the physical CD to a virtual machine (or vMA) and then eject it this virtual machine?
