ESXi hosts with VCSA 5.1 patch

Hello

I use the 5.1 VCSA in our environment with a mixture of standard and enterprise more 5.1 ESXi hosts.  My question is what are my options to patch (apply the updates of security and minor improvements) as VCUM offers in an environment strictly Windows?

Thank you

I know from a normal vSphere Manager installation of update you specify port 80 of the vCenter server. Have you tried this port number?

We have just updated since the free version of ESXi 5 by ordering the Kit of Essentials. In the process, of course, we were able to deploy vCenter Update Manager (which has been the main motivation, like patching manually the free version seemed to be quite a pain). We have a Windows host that has installed the Update Manager, and we have a VCSA running on the single instance of ESXi, we deployed to date. We were able to install the plugin on the viClient and scan the ESXi host for patches with success (a need a good number). But, we're stuck trying to install the patches... us when trying to restore the host, we get: "the operation is not supported on the selected inventory items. Looking at this logic, for the host switch to maintenance mode, the VCSA should have been suspended (apparently, actually moved), which would avoid in turn patches / updates to the deployment. Am I correct in thinking, that we have a second host and networked storage? Made a Kit Essentials / license provide for the possibility of vMotion from one host to another? It wasn't really clear... Yes, the web site says "vMotion" is included in most Essentials, but find it me hard to imagine any point to a facility in ESXi stream without the ability to vMotion between one system and another guest...

    Welcome to the community,

And since you have only an ESXi host and your vCSA is running on this host, you cannot patch this host with Update Manager for reason that already know you: the host should be the maintenance mode.

Add about another host, with Kit Essentials without vMotion functionality, you can try using a data store of shared storage between two hosts, stop the vCSA on first host and switch the vCSA on the second host... and finally the first host patch.

  • Best way to migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts with a different configuration of networking.

We currently have a cluster of 6 Dell machines that move VM 120 or so on ESXi 5.5. Networking consists of a dVswitch with 6 uplinks that map to 6 x 1gig physical NETWORK adapters on each host ESXi... These are grouped into 3 trunks / gal, so we have 2 GB by SHIFTING of the bandwidth and failover. The LAGS are configured as follows:

    LAG1

Traffic to our (NFS) shared data store and management of ESXi. (vmk0)

    LAG2

Access to the network of the VM - groups of different ports on different VLANS

    LAG3

    vMotion (vmk1)

We just bought 6 new Dell machines that have connections fiber 2 x 10gig each. The idea is to bring together in a 20Ggig LAG by machine that will handle all of the traffic, so traffic NFS data store, network traffic from the VM, vMotion and traffic management ESXi.

What is the best way to migrate the virtual machine in the cluster existing to the new machines? Many of the virtual machine are essential, so we cannot stop time.

Can I create the new DELAY on existing dVswitch and put it as an auxiliary card? I'll be able to do it for all 3 of the above both above LAGS?

Thanks for the info Alistar, it's almost here. The bit that was me stumping was that after establishing a new dVswitch I received messages that the new dvSwitch was not reachable on the old host, when I tried to migrate the virtual computer.

The solution (with the permission of VMware Support) was that I need to add the two dVswitches to one of the old hosts, then assign a physical alternative on this host uplink to a temporary 3 uplink on the new dVswitch. I then tag all the relevant VLAN that uplink.

This way I can first migrate the virtual machine to the new dVswitch networking so I can move the computer to the new cluster.

Obviously I can only migrate from old to new cluster with a single host. each virtual machine must be a double for the host with 2 switches, and then to the new cluster. I also had to have the two dVswitches to the same version.

Fortunately, I had a physical rising spare on the hosts of the old, otherwise I would have had to break one of the trunks and re-use of one of these uplinks.

Oh and be aware, impossible to use the same names for groups of ports 2 DV switches, they must be unique!

  • Unassign esxi host with replica VMs

We have an ESXi host (for display 4.6) that we want to put out of service.  I've migrated all virtual machines out of the host with the exception of 8 'replica' VMs (starting with a replica - name).  If I right click on any one of these virtual machines, the migration option is grayed out.

What should I do to move these replicas of virtual machines to another host?  Is there anything else that needs to be done to dismantle a host view 4.6 ESXi?

    Thank you

The upgrade of the agent vSphere is transparent.

You can lose the remote management of vCenter for a short period, but the virtual machines on that host will work without interruption.

  • How to connect two ESXi hosts with a connection to 1Gbps via ADJUSTABLE and the transfer of files between them?

    Dear community,

Like many of you, I am facing the problem of executing an effective backup of VMs. unfortunately I can't use standard methods: my servers are rented from the root servers and therefore haver some limits. Their main NIC is connected to the Internet on the speed of 100 MB. It's very slow, if I try to VM backup via this connection images. In addition, backup sessions running through the shared management interface are affecting the production of virtual machine performance.

To resolve this problem, I ordered an additional network card to each server and asked the data center to connect my themwith a physical link (crossover cable). OK, between my servers 1Gbit link is established, but how do you use now?

-I can not move the management interface of these cards, because they have no connection to the internet.

-I can't use among the guest computers because the guest computer is unable to access the files on disk on the host computer.

So, I've exhausted all my ideas. Maybe someone knows the trick that will let me use 1 GB link between two machines of ESXi to mutually backup disks of virtual machines from one host to another.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Create a vSwitch on each host and set the NETWORK adapter that you will use with the x-over cable.

Create a portgroup Console of service on each vSwitch and assign it an IP address on the same subnet for each server (router/gateway address does not necessary) for example 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 on each host.

Connect the cables between the server network cards.

You should have a link between two service consoles. I now download and deploy the device of the vMA, on the two hosts for the fault tolerance. Write a script on the VMAs on each host to a-i vmkfstools from one host to another and vice versa.

If you have virtual machines registered pointing these VMDK on both hosts, then have your scripts remove the VMDK and re - the clone using vmfkstools whenever you back up, you should have a backup solution of rudimentary virtual machine (full copy) in place.

Now you do not miss the service console?

    Good luck

  • Difference of ESXi hosts between analysis of updates and patches of scene

    Hello

I have two ESXi hosts with round about 700 applicable patches.

What is the difference between "stage Patches"und"search for updates"?

Do I need maintenance mode for the scene fixes?

    Kind regards

    Roland

    screenshot.jpg

    Hello

Scan for updates will scan the hosts against the basic lines of patch you have attached to them and to report on the status of this host against the base line, so, essentially, Scan for updates will tell you what patches and updates to your departure are absent from the host if the return "non-compliant" or "compliant" if all patches are already installed.  It can also return 'Unknown' or 'Inconsistent' according to the status of the host and other factors.

Step will basically copy all files to update and patch that must be installed to the willing host for the conversion, which will be more actually to install patches.  Staging of updates to date does not make service, you don't need to put the host in maintenance mode, while the staging, the host must be in service during the reclamation mode.  You can trigger a reorganization without staging, but the benefit of the staging is, first of all, you will reduce the amount of time that your host is out of action because all patches and updates are already in place in anticipation of final approval, which means that the rehabilitation phase is much faster.

    I hope this helps.

  • ESXi host running 6 VCSA disconnected from the vCenter

    Hi guys,.

I have a weird problem with my vCenter build 6. Single cluster of ESXi hosts. Running VCSA 6.0 and 6.0 ESXI. Making a storage of the vCenter vMotion initially got stuck at 77% and the ESXi host running the disconnected from vCenter vCenter. But I can connect directly to the ESXi host with vsphere client and see the vCenter VM works perfectly well. If I try to manually connect host ESXi and vCenter, I get the error "Failed to contact the host specified") both are in the same subnet and VLAN. I can migrate to other virtual machines without problem. I even restarted the host and yet I am not able to connect to vCenter. The host connects to vCenter if I reboot vCenter, but after a few minutes, disconnects again (even if no task does run on this topic.) I have no HA or DRS enabled at this point that I build this new environment and only presented a single LUN as a store of test data to the cluster.

    Any ideas?

OK, I think I fixed that or have at least a work around. So the underlying question was hiding ID mode/CPU EVC. I'm under the cluster to a level of EVC to reduce until I have migrate workloads from old environment and I think that this created a problem for the unit vCenter. To resolve this problem, I turned off the unit, directly connected to the ESXi host that had the camera running, edited the virtual machine and reset the masking of CPUID. Also, I've hidden the flag NX/XD of the guest. It's temporary (I hope) as once I increase the EVC to the Haswell, I will expose the NX/XD comments and test. For the moment, it is of the workaround I did. It may be of some use to someone.

  • Purple screen on HOST with Esxi 5.5

    Good afternoon

I'm upgrading from 5.1 to 5.5 esxi servers.

I've updated 5 servers without problems but the sixth, I had a problem.

This morning when I've updated a host everything worked fine. Suddenly, an hour later, host was unreachable and when I checked in the server room

I got a purple screen. I manually restarted the host, and everything seems to work.

In my research, one user has this kind of problem, and it's cyclical. I'm doing research in this type of case a way to fix this bug.

I took a quick glance at 2 positions:

VMware KB: ESXi hosts with larger workloads can generate partial core dumps

    VMware communities: All content-all communities

Is that someone already had this kind of screen? Understand what the purple screen?

  • Fixed host with Virtual SAN - host of recovery objective chess

    Hello community,

I have a question about the failures of the host with Virtual SAN.

We have 6 x ESXi hosts with (a 1 SSD and 7 hard drives) virtual SAN enabled. It is therefore possible to lost 2 ESXi hosts without a failure. Correct?

Is it possible to define a rule based on the host that defines who is ESXi host target failure?

    For example:

When host 1/6 breaks down, host 4/6 should start the VMs.

When the 2/6 host goes down, host 5/6 should start the VMs.

When the 4/6 host goes down, host 1/6 should start the VMs.

When the 5/6 host goes down, host 2/6 should start the VMs.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Best regards from the Germany!

    Yes & No :-)

To lose 2 ESXi hosts and continue to run all your virtual machines, you must define the number of failures to tolerate = 2 VM storage strategy and set this policy to the virtual machines.

There is no way to create areas of the fault to VSAN currently however. Then VSAN will determine where them reconstructed objects when the failure of a host - this isn't something you can order now.

  • Cannot add ESXi host to vCenter Server

    Hello

I created a home set up a VMware datacenter for study purposes. I currently have 2 virtual machines: an ESXi host with vCenter Server Appliance deployed on this subject.

I configured the server vCenter through web interface device and I have connected using vSphere Client.

I created a data center, but when I try to add a host, I get "ERROR: the request exceeded."
Connection with vSphere client directly to the ESXi host works.

I can connect using SSH to the ESXi host.

I have disabled the firewall on the ESXi host.

I have read many articles on the kbase but nothing helped me to solve this problem.

    You have any ideas?

    I finally got to understand.

It seems like my vmware workstation is not connected to the esxi as a physical host in my local network host, and so I was able to ping it unit of vCenter Server (but it worked the other way around, and that's why I thought it was ok).

After the connection to the physical LAN of VMware workstation settings, everything worked fine.

  • best practices for the deployment of resiliency using a single ESXi host

I was wondering if anyone had some advice or a deployment guide for ESXi in an environment without using a cluster. If the cost was not a factor I'd put it in a pool, but this can be done. So, assuming that it is an ESXi host with multiple network cards, which would be a good way to cover areas such as backup and restore when you use the free version? The machines that would go on is not mission-critical if there is a pretty good time that machines could be down without causing problems, however, I want to be sure that if the machine were to explode then there will be a way to recover the virtual machines running on this subject.

    Ideas?

I think, there is no better practical form VMware vSphere Hypervisor (free version) use, but maybe you'll find some ideas here: How to get VMware cost barriers - build an empire around the free VMware hypervisor

  • Change the password for root to an ESXi host

    Hello

I need help to get a script VCO that change password for root to an ESXi host.

In PowerCLI is the Set-VMHostAccount cmdlet. I searched in VCO API... I have not found or something similar.

I found the object of VcHostAccountSpec but seems it only works with "Host Profiles" and my licenses are Standard and Enterprise.

    Any idea?

    Thanks, Roberto

Another option would be to connect to the ESXi host with vCO plugin SSH and run the command "passwd" remotely. Haven't tried, but in theory, it should work.

@Tim - we try to keep the compatibility of the existing whenever possible plug-ins vCO so PowerShell module should work with the latest vCO relies.

  • 5.1 ESXi host loses default gateway

I have an ESXi host with a teddy bear and two vSwitches. The 'outside' vSwitch is connected to the Teddy and downloading DHCP is VMkernel port, and one for an internal network for virtual machines and has a static IP address for its VMkernel port. There is a firewall VM that connects the two vSwitches and manages the NAT. Everything works fine until the host restarts and pulls the DHCP on the 'outside' vSwitch, but the 'inside' vSwitch then takes the same default gateway as the external vSwitch. The firewall VM still manages a VPN tunnel very well, so my backups off-site continue to operate, but when the 'inside' gateway VMkernel gets changed I cannot connect to the VPN tunnel. Can I change the rear gateway manually and it works as expected, but it does not stick. See the attached screenshots to get an idea of the config. It is ESXi 5.1.0 799733.

The issue is that an ESXi host vmkernel can only a single gatewat address affected-
