ESXI version 3.5

So I was told that we could add still 3 500 GB disks to our 5 existing RAID, which was already 3 500 GB drives installed. I discovered that I need to upgrade to 5 in order to correctly add storage (two windows 2003 servers are VM). I found out that we also have the free version, so my question is if we have updated with the free version of 5.5 it will allow me to see the readers?

One of the important questions is to find out if your hardware is supported by the new version!

With regard to the extension of RAID. What could be possible – if your RAID controller supports - is to add 3 additional drives in RAID5 set and create an additional logical volume on the additional disk space, rather than to increase the existing logical volume (which would not work because the data store size limit of ~ 2 TB). This way you would end up with two data warehouses, one with ~ 1 TB first/existing and new with ~1.5TB.

  • Build clustered ESXi Version check

    Hi all

    I wrote script below to get the Version single ESXi host build, but I don't get any output.

    $hvs = get-VMHost | Get-View

    $cv = get-Cluster | Get-View

    {foreach ($hv to $hvs)

    $hv |? {$_. Parent - game $cv. MoRef} | Select @{N = 'Node ESXi Version'; E={$_. Config.Product.FullName}} - single

    }

    I miss something in this script, please suggest.

    In this case, the variable $cv will be a table and $cv. MoRef do not exist.

    Try like this, ESXi nodes will belong to a cluster.

    Get-Cluster | Get-VMHost |

    Select @{N = "Version ESXi node"; E={$_. ExtensionData.Config.Product.FullName}} - single

  • Firesight Management Virtual Center in ESXi version 6

    Hi all

    Is it possible to install any version of virtual appliance Firesight Management Center of vmware ESXi 6?.

    Thanks and greetings

    I have not tried it personally - it may be possible to install.

    However ESXi 6.x is not a supported platform yet. Even with the power of fire (new name for FireSIGHT) recently published Management Center 6.0, the supported versions of ESXi are 5.1 and 5.5.

  • Cannot create the data store: the current licence or ESXi version prohibited the execution of the requested operation.

    using vicfg-nas I am unable to create/remove a datastore nfs on my lab running esxi 6 at home. Is this not supported? Listing them works well. I can create/delete data warehouses nfs using the client to vcenter very well, but it's a little embarrassing.

    I guess that the host is allowed with the free edition of hypervisor! One of the few restrictions of the free version of hypervisor is access to the API. In order to have "write access" (i.e. change things rather than the list of them) you must run the host in evaluation mode, or license (Essentials or better).

  • Cannot migrate VM between 5.5 ESXi versions: the version of the product to the destination host does not support one or several CPU features

    We receive an error message that I am trying to make sense. I understand very well the notion of compatibility, CPU, CPUID, masking and so on, after working on a competitor hypervisor. However, this error seems wrong (or needs better wording) based on my understanding:

    Here is the message:

    ----

    A general error occurred: the version of the product to the destination host does not support one or several features of the CPU currently use by the virtual machine.

    Characteristics of CPUID level 0 x 1 'ecx' register are indicated with a '1' bit: x00x:xxx0:xx0x:x 000: x 0 11xx:00: 00xx:11xx

    ----

    This happened during the migration between two hosts ESXi with the same physical processors - in this case, a Westmere X 5650.

    The source host is on ESXi build 2068190 (5.5). The destination host is on ESXi build 1474528.

    The bits it seems to complain are:

    DTES64

    Monitor/MWait

    Cx16

    PDCM

    The punch line seems to be: "the product version of the destination host. However, I have trouble believing that support for these features have been added to ESXi between the two versions. If it were, VMware has been certainly silent about.

    For what it's worth, explicitly set us the CPUID masks in our virtual machines (no, CVS is not an option for us at this time.) This is the mask:

    CPUID.1.EAX = "00000000000000100000011001010001".

    CPUID.1.ECX = "00000010100110001110001000111111".

    CPUID.1.EDX = "10001111111010111111101111111111".

    CPUID.80000001.ECX = "00000000000000000000000000000001.

    CPUID.80000001.EDX = "00101000000100000000100000000000".

    cpuid.d.EAX = "00000000000000000000000000000000".

    cpuid.d.ECX = "00000000000000000000000000000000".

    cpuid.d.EDX = "00000000000000000000000000000000".

    Note that the bits of the message complains (2, 3, 14, 15) * are * in fact forced to '1' in our mask of cpuid.1.ecx. That means (if I understand correctly), ESXi does not have the virtual machine unless the host processor supports the feature. And in our case, the virtual machine will start with happiness on nodes, with both versions. It will be not simply migrate between them.

    So, long story short, is this a bug of ESXi? The error message is misleading? I understand something?

    Thank you

    Matt

    To use the masks feature VM in this way, you must replace all the 1 to your masks with-'s:

    CPUID.1.EAX = "00000000000000-000000 - 00-0 - 000-

    CPUID.1.ECX = "000000-0-00--000---000-000---".

    CPUID.1.EDX = '-000 - 0-0 - 0-

    CPUID.80000001.ECX = "0000000000000000000000000000000 -"

    CPUID.80000001.EDX = "00-0-000000-00000000-00000000000.

    cpuid.d.EAX = "00000000000000000000000000000000".

    cpuid.d.ECX = "00000000000000000000000000000000".

    cpuid.d.EDX = "00000000000000000000000000000000".

    Zeros erases the features that are not available on your hosts Westmere, and dashes will leave the other one features.  The problem with those masks was forced to you certain features on who would have normally been off.

  • Cluster with different versions of ESXi - version vCenter

    I have a 2 cluster nodes ESXi 5.0.0.

    I intend to spend one of the 2 nodes to ESXi 5.5 U2 by inserting the CD of U2 ESXi 5.5 in the CD from the host and performing an upgrade: is there a question I should?

    Since a few days/weeks, I can't upgrade the second node.

    Is there any problem if one of the 2 i ESXi 5.0.0 and the other nodes is 5.5 U2?

    I plan to upgrade my vCenter as well after the upgrade to 2 knots. Where can I see the version of the vCenter (a virtual Windows VM)?

  • VUM feature request let me move to a lower of ESXi version please

    If anyone knows where to submit a request for product feature please let me know!

    I need to upgrade my hosts ESXi 4.x to 5.5 accompanying beautifully AUVS. But some of my servers are not compatible with highest 5.5, they are 5.1 U1 then they file the list supported. Using vCenter 5.5 VUM I can manage one of my servers ESXi in order to update to 4.x, but I would need to go all the way to VUM 5.5 does not allow me to download an ISO for 5.1 versions longer. I can always patch 4.1 and 5.1 hosts.

    For the moment I can do manual updates for servers, but who wants to do that? I had much rather use the tools to manage it.

    Kind regards

    I have experienced the same problem in some clients where host hardware was not supported by the latest version of ESXi.

  • Free ESXi version question.

    Hello.

    I'm looking to adapt the free version of ESXi.

    I checked the limitation of the free version, but I do not see a feature available

    Please let me know what features can I use?

    Thank you.

    You can deploy and run virtual machines on it. That's basically all

    Most of these characteristics of fantasy of the paid license will require a vCenter and is not available for the free version.

    the features it will show in the license tab in client vSpere is:

    -Up to 32 GB of memory (hardware RAM in the host server)

    -Up to 8-way virtual SMP (which means that you can create virtual machines with 8 virtual processors)

  • ESXi version esxcfg-auth?

    Hey all,.

    I'm working through the vSphere 4.1 Hardening Guide and found the esxcfg-auth commands (designed to strengthen policies of password for the Service Console).

    I checked in / sbin on ESXi and didn't see a version of ESXi "esxcfg-auth."

    We used to harden ESX password policies by editing the etc/pam.d/common-password file.  When I try to change etc/pam.d/system-auth, the file resets to default after a reboot.

    Is there a method in ESXi to harden (similar to esxcfg-auth) password policies?

    It seems crazy to me to have a password policy file (/ etc/pam.d/system-auth) that resets to 8 characters passwords after a reboot.

    Thank you!!!

    Drew

    See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012033

    Note: To ensure that changes to the file persist on reboot, run this command before making changes to the /etc/pam.d/system-auth file: chmod + t etc/pam.d/system-auth.

  • ESX 3.0.2 Upgrde to ESXi version 4 host

    We have improved our virtual Center version 2.0 to 2.5. But decided to pass through to version 4 rather than 3.5.

    Vcentre version 4 upgrade went without a hitch. When we tried to upgrade our ESX 3.0 for ESX 4.0 host failed due to not having a vmfs on local storage partition. By using the forums and and a lot of fingers crossed with a bit of PuTTY, we created a VMFs dtastore on the local disk that can now be seen in vcentre/host/config/storage... etc.

    before you go ahead and press the take once again what it has been suggested that a nice clean install of ESXi 4.0 would be a better way to go...

    After reading lots of documentation and the forums of hunting... I am at a loss on how to copy or to easily reconfigure the configuration of the virtual switch on the ESX 3.0 environment.

    Is there a process that make a backup and restore processes. ?

  • Install ESXi version with Dell management components

    Hello

    How can I make a 'normal' version of ESXi edition of Dell management components? Can I burn a CD with iso ESXi Dell and update installation CD?

    Thank you

    Installation CD do a new installation or repair (repair would wipe your current config while retaining the VMFS partitions).  You would with your case

    (1) download the latest patch of ESXi from here - http://download3.vmware.com/software/vi/ESXe350-200904401-O-SG.zip

    (2) extract the ZIP file and you will find 3 ZIP file.  From one that ends by - I-BG-zip (it will be about 44 MB in size).

    (3) in this ZIP you will find VMware-OEM - image.tar.gz - extracted Dell.tgz.

    (4) copy that /bootbank/oem.tgz and restart your host.

    vCenter 5.5 and manage the hosts earlier but not the reverse.
