Excluding the chapters of automatic chapter numbering

Screen Shot 2013-11-17 at 19.23.14.png

Hi guys, first time poster!

I need help.

I've set up each of my chapters with automatic chapter headings (Type > text Variables > insert Variable > chapter number)

So that part works fine.

The problem I have is (as you can see in my screenshot), for my books, Chapter 1 begins in the 7th entry on the book panel. So, instead, Chapter 1 to 7, the chapter number. I'm doing this right? I can't find a solution. Must file as a table of contents and pages copyright etc is not in the compilation of the book? I want to export an entire PDF (what I know how to do) rather than having to connect a PDF file. I checked the "Document numbering Options" and under chapter numbering I don't see really an option to exclude the first entries of 4 or 5 and do the 7th in the list "Chapter 1".

Any ideas?

Thank you very much!

The lower part of this Panel is for the chapters of the Document

You can see you have configured automatic chapter numbers

For Chapter 1, you should have

You must choose whether to start chapter numbering in chapter: 1

Then in your previous documents before

You must configure them so that they start numbering in Chapter 1 of too - but use a different numbering style as A, B, C, etc..

Or anything that works for you.

Bottom line is you need to select first chapter in the book and start the numbering of Chapter 1.

  • Chapter numbers automatic for chapters within a single document

I just got a question from a reader of my VQS. He wants to know how to "capture" the chapter number and chapter title to my chapters for footers in the document.

I know how to make a model that is used for every single document that each chapter. These documents are collected in a book. Chapter numbers are set to "Automatic chapter numbering."

But chapter numbers can only increase if documents are separate files assembled in a book. (At least, I think it's true.)

But what happens if circulate you a paper with all the chapters within this single file? How to set chapter numbers to change automatically for footers? I suspect that you would need a variable text style paragraph or character as a footer. But how you get chapter numbers advance automatically?

Would you use the bullets and numbering in the paragraph style?

I know how to do these. I wonder what people would do for their workflow.

You're right about the automatic chapter numbers - it's just one per doc.

I think that I use a separate running header (character style) variable and try to pick up the number in the title of the chapter, if it is there or add a number of non-printing 'tag' on the first page of each chapter, if it is not.

  • Help with the chapters of the automatic numbering

    Hello

I'm a newbie on FrameMaker, that I don't use it very often, so please forgive me if this is a stupid problem. I inherited a FrameMaker manual from the person who was my work in the past and for the first time in three years, I had to add new chapters to the project. I upgraded from 7.2 to 9 recently. However, I'm unable to get the new numbering of correct chapter. From what I could gather the help of FrameMaker, I seem to have these options properly configured:

    • Chapter dialing properties: for example, the first chapter, I've added is defined in chapter No. 21, and continue numbering from previous chapter in book option is selected.
    • In the paragraph Designer, format of chapter.number (which is used to display the chapter number on the title page of each chapter) has a formula for C: < n > +, exactly as the other chapters having correct numbering.
    • I checked the options in the text block box customize, and the stream seems OK (tag is A, and automatic connection is enabled). Again, these settings are exactly the same in the previous chapters.

Despite all this, each new chapter, I added appears in Chapter 1 on the page, in the running footer and title and I can't understand what I'm doing wrong. I am trying to get this book done before I go on vacation Friday and this is my last hurdle, so any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

Older versions of chassis, chapter numbering has been treated as an AutoNumber paragraph, which seems to be the case in your books. Therefore, your chapter number really is a paragraph number, about Frame is concerned. In more recent versions, chapter numbering is handled with a special building block <$chapnum>, which is what affects the numbering of chapter.

Then, because your documents have been initially implemented with the old system of automatic paragraph numbering, the easiest thing for you to do is the NUMBERING of the paragraphs for your new chapters continue the numbering of the previous paragraph in the book. This in the book, not the file chapter; in other words, in the book, right click on the chapter file and select numbering. This approach assumes that ANY OTHER numbering in the files, such as figures, is managed with other sets of numbering, i.e. NOT of C:

If you want to update the numbering system and managing the numbering of chapter numbers chapter, and then in the designer of paragraph for the chapter title format, to replace the C: with <$chapnum>you must do this for each chapter file; an easy way is to do a single file and then import the paragraph format in other files the fixed file open, select other files in the book file, select file > import > Formats, select only the paragraph formats.

    Hope this helps,

    Van

  • Pages: automatic section / chapter numbering?

Hi, how can I create an automatic section / chapter formatting & numbering like this?

(Note: I speak NOT a list numbered with new numbers after each line break.) I want to have a certain numbering and style applied when I start a new section / sub-section / block of text.)

    Thank you!

    Hi Peter,.

I suspect you'll find that the answer is simple "feature not supported."

As far as I know, Pages does not support divisions of the document beyond the level 'Section' (or 'Chapter'). You need to investigate a different word-processing application.

    Kind regards

  • How can I get my LOF to see the chapter numbers and page?

I work in FM 11. My document has a TOC, BATCH, and LOF. My LOF would not be up-to-date, so I created a new one from scratch, but can't seem to get the LOF to display the chapter number in the Figure number and the page number. The format should be TitreFigure X - Y Figure... X Z. Where X is the chapter of the source, there is the number listed in this chapter, and Z is the number of page (Figure 1 - 1 Architecture... 1-5 showing the first figure in Chapter 1 is on page 5 of Chapter 1.)

The reference page for the PRIZE which is correct:

    LOT_Ref_pg.PNG

Compared to the reference page for the LOF that shows me only consecutive numbers and a page without the chapter prefix numbers:

    LOF_RefPg.PNG

I tried to copy the reference to the table of contents or the BATCH page. My LOF looks like this:

    LOF.PNG

You must add the <$chapnum>component in all relevant places you want FM to display the chapter number (see the table of contents for examples). You will also need to change some of your paratags to be included in the automatic numbering (if your content is using this combo of num chapter-figure in your chapter documents).

Also insert the tabs in page reference LOF definitions, but use the code '\t' instead of a tab character so that you know that a tab command was specified. Change the corresponding paratags to include the desired tab stops. (for example for Figure_TitleLOF you should have something like "<$paranum><$paratext>\t \t<$chapnum>-<$pagenum>").

This is my first time using this forum. I hope that my question made its appearance and that this space is to respond to the answers possible, but just in case, here's my question again:

On a PC using Windows and Adobe Reader, I sent 10 PDF files in a zip file and each label of the PDF file with a number from 1 to 10, so that they appear in the order I want. Numbered 1 to 9 records fell in the sequence automatically, but the number 10 appears under the number 1 instead of below the number 9. I googled the problem, do not see addressed. I called Microsoft, and they said it's a matter of Adobe. If anyone can help I would be grateful.

    Thank you.

Not an Adobe issue at all. If you want your files to a single digit (1-9) to appear before the 10, you must add a zero at the beginning.

  • Chapter numbers will appear in the table of contents with page numbers...

First of all, thank you all so much for the display of the answers.  This forum is wonderful.

I have a doc that needs to have chapter numbers appear with the page numbers in the table of contents.

    I insert the < $chapnum > and < $currentpagenum > in the footer and I get 1-1 appears.

To include 1-1 in the table of contents, do I have to edit the referring Page, or is there another way.

Thank you very much for your help!

Change the reference to the table of contents page to use the building block as well as the first page, which is <$chapnum>chapnum.<$pagenum>

  • The page numbers in the book: all the chapters starting at 1.

Since I upgraded to CS4, I can't my book do the automatic page numbering. Each document begins with 1 even though I chose "Continue the previous document" in the Panel book and "automatic numbering" in the panels of the document page. I put a few number of page in start page "numbering at..." or it won't let me on the Panel (saying "Invalid entry"), even if the automatic page numbering is selected. Also, it does not accept 'x '. I have 'absolute to paging"checked in the preferences. Help! Please, I beg you!

.. Also, it does not accept 'x '.

    Should she have?

I have 'absolute to paging"checked in the preferences. Help! Please, I beg you!

He he he. You gave him right at the end! "Absolute page numbering" vs "Section numbering" is just for use in InDesign itself - when you go to a certain page or print a range of pages. We call her 'View' for nothing. If you insert a page number, you will see that ID actually correct poster - whichever you choose, not the absolute number of page of the document.

It is harmless (given that your document will print, index and reference just perfect) but if you mind... 'Show page number' value by default, "Section numbering".

  • Is there away to chapter numbers GREP of the text to the alpha numerials?

We must change the numbers of chapter of the text to a number.  For example: 1 to 1. We tried a few Greps but not worked so far. We can find the words but we have hung up to change it to a number. If someone could give us some suggestions that would be great.

    The GREP will find the numbers without the (?)<=chapter), but="" it="" will="" also="" find="" any="" number,="" which="" probably="" isn't="" what="" you="" need.="" but="" your="" chapter="" numbers="" probably="" have="" a="" paragraph="" style="">

Create a text variable for the number of chapter and in your GREP

{Replace: \x{0018} (it can be different, so copy / paste your first)

Find format: regardless of your style of paragraph for the chapter number is

If your items are set up and in order, it should replace all by the correct number.

  • Broken chapter numbering - 1 book file only

    Windows 7 64-bit. FrameMaker 11, build 11.0.1.382

I have a book with 5 chapters. In my files, the Format of title 1 (chapter name) Para has the following automatic numbering style:

    C:Chapter < n + > < = 0 > < = 0 > < = 0 >:

    Autodial is checked.

In the book, numbering... has the value

Chapter:  ' Continue the numbering from the previous chapter book.

Paragraph: "Continue the numbering of the previous paragraph in the book."

All my files are correctly numbering except the file modified in the book (Chapter 5). Title 1 (chapter name) isn't picking up the correct number. It is always wrong to-1.

And, I have copied this file to one of the other files in the book that works properly. In fact, all the other files in the book don't work properly and they all have the same numbering (in the book) except for the first file (set to 1 or on restart)

They have all the same characters/para formats, templates, etc..

Updated numbering... nothing does. It is as if she is 'missing' from the topic in Chapter 4 and therefore not jump to Chapter 5. But, I can't find anything missing.

Of course, I could use some help with this one. Thank you!

There must be something wrong with the chapter 4... but I don't see it. All the files in the notebook of are defined in the same way, and they are all (except the 5 - the last chapter). So, there must be something wrong in the body/content/setup of Chapter 4, right?

Installation numbering of Chapter 5 of the book is: (should be list Chapter 5).

The numbering of the book set the chapter number Variable.

The title of your chapter and other formats do not use the building block <$chapnum>. Change so that the building blocks and you're all set.

  • How to fix my error of automatic page numbering

    Hi all:

I'm working on a book with many chapters and some even, I put every single chapter as an .indd file. Now, I need auto page all indd files and found that I made a mistake on my template file: I checked the start page, numbering at 1. When I add my files indd in a book file, cannot have continue a separate paging.

I reset each document individual indd to automatic page numbering, but did not work.

Appreciate if someone can help me to fix this, to avoid to set page numbers by hand for all indd documents.

YEST, the numbering in each chapter files options is everything that is wrong.

  • Problem importing the chapters 'empty' (with the titles only)

    Hi all

in this project to import all title formats lead to topic splits. However, whenever there is a chapter in Framemaker which has no text content, Robohelp does not create separate topics and packs two title lines in a topic. They are both bound to the table of contents via bookmarks. The result in the online help are two entries of table of contents with apparently identical content (alltough is in fact still subject being referenced twice).

I know that the empty chapters like this are bad style, but it would be no problem to receive simply correspondent subject empty because they will be never displayed by a call context.

Is it possible to force Robohelp to apply the theme split of such rules as defined in the import settings, even if a subject resulting will be empty?

    Robert

    rh_problem_import_fm.png

Refer to my first suggestion above...

    1. Create a paragraph whose content is:
      "This paragraph will never shown.
    2. Then apply a conditional text style in FrameMaker. Use the print of the existing online, comment styles, or create your own. It does not matter.
    3. Copy this paragraph and paste it after any place where you want to remove the problem that exists between 4.1 and 4.1.1
    4. Update your HR project
    5. Set your page layout to single Source to exclude the State applied to step 2
    6. Process your file
    7. Mark this as Correct comment to help others to find and fix this!

    Best,

  • How do I change chapter numbering?  Help, please!

    Hello.

Sorry to bother you with this (seemingly simple) question, but I have tried everything and still can't find the solution.

I recently inherited a document and will put up the files.

It's over for the most part, I just need to clean, PDF and pass along.

    ... except for ONE problem:

    All chapters say "Chapter 1".

I tried Format > Document > numbering, watched online and we have tried all other methods I can think of.

Whenever I update the book, all the files still say "Chapter 1".

    Help, please!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

    Ok

In each chapter file, the Designer section for the tag that defines the chapter number... What is the string in the AutoNumber field?

It must be something similar to

    H:Chapter<$chapnum>

If this is not the case, change it so that the <$chapnum>variable is used in the string.

Do one or two chapters first, save the files, and then update the book to see if it becomes.

Also... I guess that the numbers are incorrect in your table of contents and other files generated, too, not only in the list of files in the book.

    Is this correct?
